Kevin Durant on Russell Westbrook: ‘I Don’t Want Any Other Point Guard’

Star teammates Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant have spent the summer answering questions about their relationship, and according to both guys, everything is just fine. KD says that Russ is his point guard of choice. Per Yahoo! Sports: “For all the talk about Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook not getting along, at times, during the playoffs last season, Durant denies there’s a rift between the Oklahoma City Thunder’s two stars. And he wants to make sure Westbrook stays in OKC. ‘We butt heads just like any other players because we are both competitive, we both want to go at it, we both have ideas,’ Durant said. ‘That’s going to happen. But I support him 100 percent. Of course, I hated when people were saying the stuff they were saying, and he hated it as well. I didn’t want it to get to his head. I hate when people try to creep into the group and try to break things up. I enjoy playing with Russell so much. I hope he understands that, and I’m sure he does. I’m looking forward to next season already. The last thing I’ve been worrying about is what people say about Russ, and I’m sure that’s the last thing he’s worrying about as well.’ … Durant said he is ‘confident’ that Westbrook will stay with the Thunder. ‘I don’t want any other point guard,’ Durant said. ‘He’s perfect for us, the type of guy he is, the type of player he is, the type of teammate he is. We’re all competitive, especially me and him. We get the best of each other in practice every day, and we want to go at each other and make each other better. We are going to have disagreements. That’s what all good players on good teams do.’”

good now they need to trade kendrick no game perkins and get jeff greene back

  • rich

i think they should keep kendrick “recovering from knee surgery perkins” another season before they cast him away, look how well that worked out when the hornets traded chandler away because of his ankle injury

    tell the truth now…

    Bet he wants cp3

  • cramzy

    slide russ to the 2

^ Not with the way James Harden is Looking.

Ship Russell out, get a pass first point and start Harden at the 2. And what the heck is Durant supposed to say “I hate Westbrook.” I’m sure if they could get CP3 or DWill he wouldn’t mind one bit.

Russ is one of the best young point guards in the league(just look at the numbers) he’s also a legit scoring threat which keeps defences honest. Great fit for the OKC system and he’s going to get better.

  • Rfedekid

To tell you guys the truth I think the Okc should look in trading Serge Ibaka, Maynor, and a couple draft picks to Denver for Nene whenever the lockout ends. Denver is in need of a pf since kenyon is going to china and Nene is looking at free agency. Next they get to pick up a third point guard to provide support behind lawson and andre miller. Okc solves all their problems by adding the interior scoring they need to truly make their team a legit contender. Nene fits perfect with their team because he can run the floor and can post. He would be perfect to place along Kendrick, and you would have collison on the bench for defensive and rebound purposes.

Malcolm Gladwell’s piece on Grantland today about the NBA and its owners is awesome.

BE.Water, actually the opposite. With the way James Harden is looking(great playmaker) why not have Russell run the 2.

  • MLK4Life

People who say that they should trade Russell or make him a two guard just don’t get it. They made it to the Western Conference Finals. He’s an All-Star Point Guard. They weren’t going to get past the Mavs regardless. Keep Russell. Let him continue to develop. People really need to get off of his back.

OKC IS A FEW SMART MOVES AWAY FROM WINNING MULTIPLE RINGS SOON, MAYBE LOSING MULTIPLE RINGS TO MIAMI?? I STILL WISH THEY WOULDVE TAKEN TYREKE OVER HARDEN.

  • http://bedotwater.bandcamp.com BE.water

LakeShow that makes sense, but I also think Harden is the more effiecient scorer. Maybe having the ball in his hands would do the team a favor??

  • Brahsef

    @water

You can’t compare Harden’s scoring to Westbrooks, Harden’s an off the ball scorer…he better be more efficient.

I can’t believe a lot of you think they should trade Russel when he’s what 23 and was 2nd team NBA. Dude has an uncanny ability to score and will get better at distributin the ball. The fact he can score on his own allows Durant to avoid being double and triple teamed. Once he matures in his thought process a little, Durant and Westbrook are gonna be somethin serious. Havin Harden as a third scorin option is all good as well.

I think Harden would handle PG duties better than Westbrook. Reason: Westbrook pretty much has one speed. As fast as possible. Harden can slow the game down when needed and he is a deadly 3 point shooter which makes him playing the point with Westbrook constantly slashing into an ideal situation. (pop it out to the Beard on the drive and he nails the dagger) Basically OKC would have 2 half PG half SG’s running the back court. Makes sense to me.

That’s what I’ve been saying about Harden as well Lakeshow. If your finally gonna let Harden start and play heavy minutes (like he should) then Westbrook won’t be much of an issue as a PG. But if your gonna use him as “Manu Ginobili/Jason Terry” then I thought they should explore a Westbrook for CP3 deal. But I don’t think the latter is the best option

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

i mean harden run the point in late/close game situations… let westbrook grow and run it the majority of the game tho. seriously guys give the homie westbrook some time. he’s only 23!! and yeah cp3 or d.will would probably be better, but both are kind of injury prone.

  • seun ijose

durant cant create his own shot so thats why he needs westbrook plus chris paul doesnt like to shoot he proved that by averaging 15 points a gane last season. Rajon rondo cant shoot and d-will just doesnt have the potential that westbrook has. The only point guard worth trading westbrook for is rose and he’s not going anywhere. Oh and james harden is inconsitent and a pure scorer who isn’t that athletic plus he has a somewhat weak ballhandling skills, limited upside, and average size.

  • asgf

I agree with datkid. Sure Westbrook turns over but he’s way more athletic, creates his own penetration which spreads out the D. Give him some time to realize his niche, improve his J and he’s good to go.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

smh, When you say “Durant can’t create his own shot” (which isn’t true) and then say “Thats why he needs westbrook” (which is f*ckin ridiculous) you are immediately contradicting yourself. Kevin Durant the leading scorer in the league needs Westbrook (a pg who shoots too many shots, by everyones standards) over Paul (a pg who can take the least talented team outside of Toronto and Cleveland to the playoffs in the West, without being selfish)? And Harden if you know anything about him, has been criticized throughout his career (going back to ASU) for being too passive. And his ball handling seems ok, his turnover rate is lower then Russel Westbrooks after all.

  • money makin O

    good point lakeshow

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

you won’t EVER get me to say that westbrook is better than any of the pg’s you guys listed… but what I am saying is that with the way he’s been improving you should expect that pretty soon he won’t have a lot of these same flaws. besides westbrook’s great to watch and the thunder can win with him. they’re one low-post scorer and a better coach from being unstoppable

  • Slammer

    GO MAGIC!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

@Rfedekid, they would be insane if they traded ibaka

  • EtheKnickfan

Westbrook will be ok. He’s young. Needs experience and that only comes from gettin ur ass handed to u a couple of times. Once he’s humbled watch out. You young guys should hear what they use to say about Jason Kidd when he was this young. On another note, if they trade Ibaka it will be Seattle all over again. That would be a bad move. They needed a center that is a little more athletic than Perk its just…..not many C’s like that available. They need a burly PF that will risk suspension everytime someone looks at Westie n Durant funny.

  • JEr dawg

    Break up the OKC Thunder!

  • Sleepyfloyd

The Thunder have 4 keepers, Durant, Westbrook, Ibaka, and Harden, none of whom should be traded at this time. Young athletic guys who are only getting better. Nene would be great for this team, Kendrick Perkins doesn’t suit their style, way too slow, can’t run, can’t jump, can’t shoot.

  • Streetballin

I bet Durant wants a Point guard that “Actually Pass the ball”
