Kevin Garnett: ‘I Was Pretty Close’ to Being a Laker

Kevin Garnett just spent a few minutes on The Dan Patrick Show. And though audio isn’t available online yet (Audio is now available.) Here’s some of what Kev had to say:

On the Lockout: “At the end of the day common ground will be found. This game is too beautiful… I can’t see just throwing away the season… But if we do do that, both sides are prepared for that.”

On if he’s talked with Boston about contract extension: “Truthfully, no, I haven’t. Danny [Ainge], I think, in passing, in joking moments that we have, will throw something up in the air and be funny and we’ll laugh at it. But it’s nothing concrete, no.”

On how close he was to ending up a Laker and not a Celtic in the Summer of 2007: “I was pretty close, to be honest….Kob[e Bryant] and Phil [Jackson] at the time were at each other pretty bad. The situation was full of uncertainty. It wasn’t something I wanted to get into… It was my choice not to go to the Lakers.”

On playing with Shaquille O’Neal, and the 2010-11 season in general: “It was truly an honor to play alongside dude (Shaq). It was totally an experience. This year was the probably most fun I’ve had in a long time in the NBA, straight up.”

dont hate pau but kg and kobe we would be on 4 chips by now..damn!!!

  • Yann Blavec

    that would have been cool

  • Andrew

Kobe and kg would be at the same spot as Kobe and pau. Kg is too banged up these days to contribute like pau. But for those first couple years the lakers would have beasted.

  • Brian

Wait… what? Kobe and Phil were at odds in 2007? That’s a new revelation.

  • MaxIsNative

I was this close to getting an A, but all the uncertainty surrounding the quality of the teacher, I got an B… Sad day for me, and the Lakers.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Sounds like a swell idea but who would have the lakers given up apart from Kobe to get KG? I don’t see Sota agreeing to Andrew Freaking Bynum but you never know with Kahn running things.

  • logues

MaxIsNative: i wish i could get “an B”

@JTaylor21, McHale was calling the shots back then.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Once upon a time he was real close to being a Bull too (as was Kobe…as was Pau Gasol) but Paxson didn’t want to part with his “next Scottie Pippen” AKA Loul Deng.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    You sound bitter.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Enigmatic, KG on Bulls= No DRose. You probably would have off yourself had that happened.
Huey, my fault. I still don’t see Sota giving up KG for Bynum.

CELTICS GAVE UP ALOT FOR KG. LAKERS DIDNT HAVE ANYTHING CLOSE TO AL JEFF TO GIVE UP. BESIDES, KG WENT AFTER RAY DID.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@Allen – Who, me? Yeah, I was for a while till we got Rose.
I mean, come on. Your squad has a crack at KG or Kobe in their prime, and the GM doesn’t pursue it because of some cat’s “potential”?
That’s wack to me. Take them GM skills back to the factory…
    @JTaylor – that’s not true at all.
I didn’t expect the Bulls to even have a chanve to draft Rose until they somehow won the lottery, and even then I was rooting for them to draft Beasely because I thought (incorrectly, it turns out) he would be a beast and a low-post presence.
But had the Bulls not been in the lottery and not had a chance to draft Rose, I wouldn’t have been tripping in the least.
You forget, I’m a fan of the Bulls first and foremost, regardless of who’s on the squad.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

Why wouldn’t they give up KG for Bynum and some other pieces? They gave him up for Al Jefferson, 4 other marginal cats and 2 draft picks. Not exactly an even deal.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I thought the Bulls should draft Beasley too. I thought he fit a need, and I really, REALLY wanted to see DRose and Wade playing together. That would have been awesome.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I REALLY, really wanted to see Rose and Wade playing together too…on the Bulls last year. :D
Nah, in all seriousness, I was in the minority in wanting Beasley, but I felt like, we had a decent point guard, and we needed a PF. I had no way of knowing how great Rose was gonna turn out, and I thought Beasely offered the team more of what it was lacking at the time.
Rose and Wade together would be dope, though, no doubt.

  • MaxIsNative

    Thanks Logues, you’re the best.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Kobe with KG would have won 3 straight titles. If KG was healthy and Bynum was on the team. Both may or may not have happend. Whatever, i’ll take 3 in 5 tries.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Your all right, the Lakers could not possibly have found a way to get Kevin Garnett, I mean they’re the Lakers it’s not like they are some team that always finds a way to get a star player for penny’s on the dollar……wait they got Pau Gasol later that season? nevermind

  • http://nba.com GP23

Yeah, and Kobe was nearly a Clipper, LOL…….imagine that

  • Soulquarian

The only guy I want to see playing with DRose is Dwight.

P.S. I love KG. His passion is unparalleled.

  • http://www.slamonline.com UNFROZEN CAVEMAN LAWYER

ROSE AND WADE COULDNT PLAY TOGETHER.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    KG>>>>>Gasol. Get the picture.

  • shaolin23

@Unfrozen caveman lawyer – I was thinking the same thing. Aren’t their styles of play almost identical?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Seriously with your caps lock comments your in the same category as Spanny, Greek Dude, the Seed, and Bull22

  • shaolin23

I was thinking the same thing Unfrozen. Both need the ball in their hands to produce. Sounds like other arguments I’ve heard before involving Wade/another player…

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

JTaylor, Today though? I’d take Pau if he lets his balls loose. KG’s knees aren’t looking good. The last 12 years though I want KG obviously.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Kevin Garnett is 4 years older. Get the picture

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

In 2007, he was twice as good. Get the picture?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Twice as good. Your a moron. And how many championships have the Lakers won compared to the Celtics since 2007? And how often do General Managers make trades without taking into account a players age? The Lakers would have had Kevin Garnett if Garnett wanted to go there, just like they got Pau Gasol after he asked out of Memphis. I don’t even understand what your arguing, I’m obviously right, here let me quote Kevin Garnett for you, “I was pretty close, to be honest….Kob[e Bryant] and Phil [Jackson] at the time were at each other pretty bad. The situation was full of uncertainty. It wasn’t something I wanted to get into… It was my choice not to go to the Lakers.”

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    Oh, they could play together.
    Yes, the definitely could.

  • dma

i thought KG went to Boston because he was promised a contract extension that I’m sure cheap a$$ Buss wouldn’t have made.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

No, you’re the moron if you think that the Lakers wouldn’t have opted for KG over Gasol if they got the chance. Even though KG was 30 at the time, he was coming off a 22/13/4 season with Sota and in his first season with Bos, guess what? He thoroughly outplayed Gasol in the Finals. Negro, please!
How many MVPs does Gasol have?
How many DPOYs does Gasol have?
How many all-defensive selections does Gasol have?
How many rebounding title does Gasol have?
The world wide web, where stupidity reigns supreme.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Lakers have the highest payroll in the league $91.3M (by 17 Million Dollars). Jerry Buss is anything but cheap.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Did I say that, captain assumption?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

“sure cheap a$$ Buss” lol… okay. Anyway, JTaylor. Twice as good on Defense. Yes. On Offense they were equal. Now Pau is more effective on Offense and sometimes defense. Enig, They definitely ‘could’ have played together, but in many peoples eyes it’s gross basketball to have 2 ball dominant guard/wing players. Same deal goes for the Heat right now. They look ugly when D-Wade and James aren’t on the same page.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I think Unfrozen Caveman is Tarzan Cooper. And I always liked Tarzan.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Once again JTaylor your arguing things no one has said…

    - where the f*ck did I say the Lakers would take Pau over Garnett? bueller?

-the internet, where JTaylor might someday learn to read….

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

There is no way in HELL KG and Gasol were equally effective on offense in 2008. And Gasol is never, NEVER as good as Garnett on defense. That is ridiculous.
And Wade and Rose would have been awesome, y’all are sleeping.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Tarzan was cool with me, and I don’t really have an issue with Cavemand except his insistence on using capslock like it makes what he says relevant or important. Capslock doesn’t change the meaning of yours words, it’s just straight up annoying

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Allen, it took you THAT long to figure out “UNFROZEN” is Tarzan?
He was cool at times as Tarzan, but now it seems like he’s out to prove he can be the biggest troll around.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

haha I never realized Caveman was Tarzan until this conversation.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Nah, I’ve been saying that. But if everybody knows it’s him why do they keep calling him an idiot and why are the so bothered by the caps lock?
maybe he uses caps lock because it’s easier or something.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    It’s so obvious.
Both Spurs lovers. Both Bulls haters. Both love K-Rino.
And when UNFROZEN takes shots at me for things me and Tarzan used to beef about, you know it’s a wrap.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Aren’t you the one that said “And how many championships have the Lakers won compared to the Celtics since 2007? And how often do General Managers make trades without taking into account a players age?” Which is implying that the Lakers wouldn’t have won 2 chips with KG based on him being older than Gasol. If that is not what you meant, why make such a foolish statement?
Let’s say Bos got Gasol and LA got KG, they wouldn’t have lost to BOS in 08 and probably with a healthy KG, would have won 3 straight chips. You can’t say the same for Gasol, who’s been healthy as can be yet has thrown up duds in 2 playoff runs with LA.
The world wide web, where ignorance is bliss.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I’m bothered by the capslock cuz its a little harder to read, and makes it look like a cry for attention.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Caps lock is just annoying. It’s a personal thing.
And as Tarzan he used to have much smarter comments. I don’t know why he wants to dumb himself down like this, cause I know dude is a sharp guy.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

NO it isn’t, it’s implying that if they can find a way to get Gasol who is 4 years younger then they could have found a way to get Garnett. And the how many championships have the Lakers won compared to the Celtics comment was a response to you saying Garnett “In 2007, he was twice as good. Get the picture?” — see another dumb comment, twice as good would imply twice as good, not better. Proving he isn’t twice as good I pointed out Laker Championships, because twice as good is f*cking preposterous.

  • LA Huey

As much as I’d love to have seen KG and Kobe in the same colors, the Lakers, Celtics, and the league are better that it didn’t happen.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Gasol and KG were equal on offense in 2008. Maybe ones tougher than the other, but you don’t know basketball if you think KG was>>Pau on offense. Your right about defense, but what i’m saying is now KG is not looking good these days. Unless he’s rejuvenated this next year, I don’t think he is going to be much better than Pau on D. Thats Pau when he is trying on D. Pau doesn’t always try. KG always is giving full effort. In 2011, Full Effort KG pretty much equal to full effort Pau on defense.

  • EJ

Everybody who saw the finals knows it’s not even a contest. And getting Gasol wasn’t exactly an investment for the future, even tho he’s a little younger, so I’d deffinitely take KG over Gasol in 2007.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

And the world wide web thing you keep saying, coupled with your redundant reading, makes it look like your talking about yourself.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

KG will be better then Pau Gasol on defense until his knees give out completely. He still, by a lot of measures had the most impact of any 4 in the league last season on defense.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I agree, but i’m saying not by much. He’s going to be slightly better on D next year. Unless he is back to his old ways. I just don’t see him looking as good next year than this last. But yes he was still the best defensive 4 last year.

  • http://philosopher.view@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    nbk and JT21 going in…

  • http://philosopher.view@blogspot.com The Philosopher

And, Tarzan Cooper/Caveman/totalscrotumimplosion is still G.O.A.T.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Garnet looked GREAT on defense this year. GREAT.
See, that’s how I know cats who know ball from those who don’t. Garnett was still the best all-around post defender in the League this year, the problem was that without another solid post defender, the Celtics didn’t have the ability to cover up for their three perimeter defenders who are actually sieves off the bounce. yeah, I said sieves.
Garnett rotates like a demon, blocks shots at the rim, is always in position, and can switch the pick and roll and stay in front of his man. He only looked like he slipped because against better teams, he was asked to neutralize their best post player AND be the leader on help defense and shot blocking. He can’t do that anymore, that’s too much. But, he is still amazing on defense.
In 2008, Garnett was clearly better than Gasol on offense by any measure. Whether you’re talking effectiveness or stats. Hell, look at their numbers prior to the trade. Garnett came to Boston, sacrificed shots and put up the same numbers Gasol put up as THE MAN in Memphis. He averaged 19 on 14 shots. The year before he was at 22.4, which is more than Pau has ever averaged in his career!
No, they were not equal, KG was better, and he was a lot better. He just is crazy unselfish, and could dominate a game even when he doesn’t score buckets.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Garnett had to go from being the man to second or third fiddle at time in a much slower paced offense.
Gasol went from being the man to being second fiddle in an offense geared towards him scoring and with the best player in the game. This must be considered.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Yall trippin, saying Wade and Rose cant play togetgher, If they were above average players that may just be true but they arent, and I believe Kg could of got traded to lakers, hell, they got pau gasol for damn near nothing at the time.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Jermaine O’neal did a solid job protecting the rim last season as well. He just was horrific and I mean absolutely horrific on offense, and didn’t do very well in terms of stayin healthy……per usual. But he was pretty solid on defense, and Boston was a terror when him and Garnett were together.

  • Heals

Nobody likes needless drama (LA in general). I’ll put it this way; Lakers fans (certainly not all) have reasonable doubt as to whether Ticket would’ve better than Pau(It’s not crazy to think Bos could’ve offered a similar package to Memph that they did Minn). C’s fans laugh at the question (not saying it’s rational). Ticket has just been such an energy force for the team, fans and community that there is no comparison…

  • http://philosopher.view@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Unbelievable.
Why in the hell can’t Wade and Rose play together?
ESPECIALLY at this point in Wade’s career.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Garnett is clearly a better player. This can’t be argued IMO. Offensively they are about even at this point in their careers. Gasol is a little better scorer, Garnett a slightly better high-post player. Each can pass with the best of the bigs. Garnett is very good facing up, Gasol is one of the best if not the best in the league with his back to the basket (since Yao retired). Atleast that’s how I see them.

  • http://hoopism.com airs

you crazy if you think wade and rose couldn’t play together, that’d be the scariest backcourt in the league.
rose wouldn’t be gunning for his like he is now cuz he’s actually have a legitimate superstar.
it’d be oops and fastbreaks all day.
but not like miami doesn’t already get that..

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

You do know that KG got hurt in the 09 Playoffs and was basically playing on one leg during the ’10 Finals, right? Nevermind, I’m obviously arguing with a tonto.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I didn’t know what it meant. And I asked if he was being racist, I didn’t say your racist. I literally don’t speak spanish, the guy I work with in my office is bilingual and translated Tonto into the different meanings I gave you. and he didn’t really use the word correctly saying “I’m obviously arguing with a tonto” which would in english translate to talking to a western apache. Here is the definition from dictionary .com “Former term for the Western Apaches, from Sp., lit. “foolish;” probably a translation of a name given to the people by other branches of the Apache, e.g. Chiricahua Apache /bini:’édiné/, Mescalero Apache /bini:’édinendé/, both lit. “people without minds,” and used to designate
the Western Apaches. Sp. tonto is originally a nursery word, used for its sound.”

Dear god… Who wants to debate the merits of apples and oranges? Naw I got one though. Who is going to be better next year, The Kings, or The Timberwolves? Both teams have allot of young talent. I think I may give the edge to The Kings. Cause Reke is dangerous, Demarcus could dominate, and they have some interesting new pieces to toss in the mix. I feel like the T-Wolves should trade K-Love to the Lakers for Pau. Then Bynum could get his offense on a little more and they can get even younger. Then the T-Wolves can slap one of their wings(beasley, williams) at the 4. Otherwise they have a logjam.

I’ve seen like 2 episodes of The Office.
    Never seen The Wire.

I just started watching The Office again after not seeing an episode for a couple years. Enjoying the characters again. Rainn Wilson is hilarious as Dwight, I wish he could get a good role in some movies, dude cracks me up. If Darryl the warehouse guy could get on Pineapple Express I don’t see why he can’t get a gig. I suggest Archer if CYE is up your alley. But theres allot of good shows out there. Of course once Basketball season is going I say screw you to every other TV program.

@LakeShow, I’ll take on this debate. I’ll go with the Purple Paupers for next year but the Timberpups long-term. We know what to expect from a healthy Reke (even if Jimmer cramps his style) but ‘Sota will be a force once they get through their growing pains.

  • http://dfklf.com Jukai

Jimmer Fredette, Tyreke Evans, Francisco Garcia, JJ HIckson, DeMarcus Cousins
    vs
Ricky Rubio, Wesley Johnson, Derrick Williams, Kevin Love, Brad Miller
Kind of a wash, is it not? Timberwolves have Beasley and Webster and some other guys off the bench, I’ll give the edge to them. They just look better, chemistry wise. I feel like Evans and Cousins are gonna keep bickering and I have no idea how Jimmer is gonna fit.

Taylor, in all honesty, you really suck at this. I’m “acting like a man online” wth does that even mean? nbk is swinging his digital d*ck around to make up for his real life vagina. Thats the insult that you come up with? Be better

NBK, “where he thinks he is a man happens”
Why are you posting my name as a trolL.
ANYBODY WHO IS STATING GASOL HAS EVER BEEN ON KG LEVEL, NEEDS TO GO REWATCH MEMPHIS PLAYOFF SERIES AND REALIZE GASOL IS SO OVERRATED, THAT HE CAN BE TRADED FOR KEVIN LOVE.

  • seriousblack

    Lame…

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

LAHuey, Appears that way. But the Kings Longterm have Reke and Demarcus also. So both could (if they play theur cards right) be tops of the west in a few years. Unfortunately I see both teams making stupid trades. Jukai, It is kind of a wash thats why I brought it up. I don’t think Jimmer should start for The Kings. If he does I think Reke should do the majority of PG duties unless Jimmer learns them quick. Do you really think they will bring Beasly off the bench for Sota?

So I was digging in the vaults, and I still couldn’t find where me and Philo went at it, but I did manage to dig up this gem:
    _______________________________________________________________________
“If I wanted to make fun of you for losing your franchise I’d tell you to run along and go watch SonicsGate with your Sonics Payton jersey and Slick Watts headband while clutching a stuffed Squatch with one hand and throwing darts at a picture of Clay Bennett with the other…again.
All while wearing a Lakers Payton jersey under that Sonics Payton jersey, of course”

Sorry, LakeShow. We cool now, right? :D

Thought Troll – i feel like you say certain things to cause people to flame at you if not then i apologize

  • Movalaker

Why hasn’t anyone mentioned the deal involved Bynum and Odom? In hindsight, can we admit that the trade would have been a huge mistake? You can argue how much Garnett > Gasol, but giving up Odom and Bynum would have left the Lakers very thin at C. Also, I’d say that before Bynum injured his knee in December of 2007 the team looked better than the team that lost in the Finals W/O Bynum. I remember a game around Christmas where the Lakers made a dominant Jazz team look like they were from the D league.

My overall point is that Odom helped the Lakers in ’09 and Bynum was a key part to the Lakers winning in ’10. Everything worked out and if we played the “if game” Garnett may not have even won a ring with LA (chemistry is key) and he may not have won a ring at all had Bynum been healthy in ’08.

But let’s not play the if game. The Lakers won 2 rings and Boston won 1. Granted, Boston’s ’08 thrashing made them look like one of the best teams in NBA history but it still doesn’t changed the fact that they haven’t made the Finals since.

    Seen this on Twitter –
an Isreali news site’s headline regarding a EuroBasket game: “Germany Blitzes Isreal in Opener”.
Is it just me, or does that headline sound either insensitive or ignorant to y’all?

Dood… why you gotta bring up the hurtful past Enig. lol get outta here with that ish Speedy. I love looking up old SLAM gems though lol.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

The writers here are better then the writers everywhere else. Your sarcasm if thats what it was prolly isnt goin to register as such to people taylor.

  • http://cnbc.com New_Guy

I like Pau better cuz even though he doesn’t seem like he is doing much during the games you always are shocked at the stats in the box score. But KG is such an intangible guy who also gets his that I can see why people prefer him

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Cry me a puddle. Nah, just clowning. How could I hate Slam when it’s the only website I visit on the regular, well that and google translate.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I don’t understand how someone can come here on the daily and yet still talk ish about the writers here.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

And now I look like an idiot cause I wrote that, walked away, came back, hit “submit”, then seen JTaylor’s 7:15 comment…
    My bust!

  • chingy

The SLAM love! It’s amazing how a convo can go from KG vs Pau to Google translate. Only on SLAM forums! Thanks for making my work day pass.

  • seriousblack

Some of the writers here are really good. Some are trash that really do a disservice to the site with their ill thought out commentaries and overly emotional responses to comments. Overall though, some of the commentors are way worse.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

There is only one full-time writer that co sistently commwnts. And he doesnt get too defensive anymore. The other writers stopped commenting like 3 years ago when commenters (myself included) became too confrontational or even just nasty to the writers.

  • brandon

well kg you might have been able to win two maybe three rings but you still got one.

NBK: In fairness, the writers were always confrontational and nasty. ALWAYS. It’s why I like them so much and think they’re all super intelligent, but they weren’t exactly saints.

Jukai what’s your opinion of Israel? I remember you saying you’ve lived there before right?

  • http://dfklf.com Jukai

Teddy: Well, I lived there for several months. I used to be an unmoving supporter of Israel, but the country has had a string of horrendous leaders, now cherry topped with the dangerous Netanyahu. I haven’t been a fan of their politics in a while. Why do you ask?

  • BostonBaller

DRose = PG + DWade = SG, works for me. It’s different than LBJ & Wade, Rose is a true point who can score and can be very unselfish & can recognize each situation down court and make smart decisions for everyone.

  • BostonBaller

I agree w/ AllenP way up there w/ the KG was better offensively by way of producing in his situation as compared to Gasol’s. Sieves….lol, good word but a bit harsh, not real harsh just a bit. PDouble AND Ray can play D as evident by the work they put in during playoff runs and their coverage of the likes of LBJ & Kobe. IMO. KG still does have better D than most guys and again allenP hit it on the head by stating it “looked” like he slipped b/c of his having to be everywhere all the time. sieves. hahhahaha best line yet.
