Kevin Garnett: ‘I Was Pretty Close’ to Being a Laker

Kevin Garnett just spent a few minutes on The Dan Patrick Show. And though audio isn’t available online yet (Audio is now available.) Here’s some of what Kev had to say:

On the Lockout: “At the end of the day common ground will be found. This game is too beautiful… I can’t see just throwing away the season… But if we do do that, both sides are prepared for that.”

On if he’s talked with Boston about contract extension: “Truthfully, no, I haven’t. Danny [Ainge], I think, in passing, in joking moments that we have, will throw something up in the air and be funny and we’ll laugh at it. But it’s nothing concrete, no.”

On how close he was to ending up a Laker and not a Celtic in the Summer of 2007: “I was pretty close, to be honest….Kob[e Bryant] and Phil [Jackson] at the time were at each other pretty bad. The situation was full of uncertainty. It wasn’t something I wanted to get into… It was my choice not to go to the Lakers.”

On playing with Shaquille O’Neal, and the 2010-11 season in general: “It was truly an honor to play alongside dude (Shaq). It was totally an experience. This year was the probably most fun I’ve had in a long time in the NBA, straight up.”

    Dear god… Who wants to debate the merits of apples and oranges? Naw I got one though. Who is going to be better next year, The Kings, or The Timberwolves? Both teams have allot of young talent. I think I may give the edge to The Kings. Cause Reke is dangerous, Demarcus could dominate, and they have some interesting new pieces to toss in the mix. I feel like the T-Wolves should trade K-Love to the Lakers for Pau. Then Bynum could get his offense on a little more and they can get even younger. Then the T-Wolves can slap one of their wings(beasley,williams) at the 4. Otherwise they have a logjam.

    My girl falls asleep with the office on every night just about, I think I’ve seen more episodes of the office then I have every other sitcom in the world combined. We been catching up on our Curb Your Enthusiasm lately though, about to start season 5.

    I just started watching The Office again after not seeing an episode for a couple years. Enjoying the characters again. Rainn Wilson is hilarious as Dwight, I wish he could get a good role in some movies, dude cracks me up. If Darryl the warehouse guy could get on Pineapple Express I don’t see why he can’t get a gig. I suggest Archer if CYE is up your alley. But theres allot of good shows out there. Of course once Basketball season is going I say screw you to every other TV program.

    @LakeShow, I’ll take on this debate. I’ll go with the Purple Paupers for next year but the Timberpups long-term. We know what to expect from a healthy Reke (even if Jimmer cramps his style) but ‘Sota will be a force once they get through their growing pains.

    Kind of a wash, is it not? Timberwolves have Beasley and Webster and some other guys off the bench, I’ll give the edge to them. They just look better, chemistry wise. I feel like Evans and Cousins are gonna keep bickering and I have no idea how Jimmer is gonna fit.

    LAHuey, Appears that way. But the Kings Longterm have Reke and Demarcus also. So both could (if they play theur cards right) be tops of the west in a few years. Unfortunately I see both teams making stupid trades. Jukai, It is kind of a wash thats why I brought it up. I don’t think Jimmer should start for The Kings. If he does I think Reke should do the majority of PG duties unless Jimmer learns them quick. Do you really think they will bring Beasly off the bench for Sota?

    Why hasn’t anyone mentioned the deal involved Bynum and Odom? In hindsight, can we admit that the trade would have been a huge mistake? You can argue how much Garnett > Gasol, but giving up Odom and Bynum would have left the Lakers very thin at C. Also, I’d say that before Bynum injured his knee in December of 2007 the team looked better than the team that lost in the Finals W/O Bynum. I remember a game around Christmas where the Lakers made a dominant Jazz team look like they were from the D league.

    My overall point is that Odom helped the Lakers in ’09 and Bynum was a key part to the Lakers winning in ’10. Everything worked out and if we played the “if game” Garnett may not have even won a ring with LA (chemistry is key) and he may not have won a ring at all had Bynum been healthy in ’08.

    But let’s not play the if game. The Lakers won 2 rings and Boston won 1. Granted, Boston’s ’08 thrashing made them look like one of the best teams in NBA history but it still doesn’t changed the fact that they haven’t made the Finals since.

    Some of the writers here are really good. Some are trash that really do a disservice to the site with their ill thought out commentaries and overly emotional responses to comments. Overall though, some of the commentors are way worse.

    There is only one full-time writer that co sistently commwnts. And he doesnt get too defensive anymore. The other writers stopped commenting like 3 years ago when commenters (myself included) became too confrontational or even just nasty to the writers.

    NBK: In fairness, the writers were always confrontational and nasty. ALWAYS. It’s why I like them so much and think they’re all super intelligent, but they weren’t exactly saints.
