Zydrunas Ilgauskas is Retiring from the NBA

Happy trails, Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Big Z is calling it quits after 13 seasons in the NBA. Reports the Plain Dealer: “Former Cavs center Zydrunas Ilgauskas tells the Plain Dealer he is retiring from the NBA after 13 seasons. Ilgauskas: ‘enough is enough. My body is beat up and I’m tired physically. There is no age limit, but everyone knows when it’s time.’ More Z: ‘I want to spend more time with my family. I have spent the last 15 years living out of a suitcase.’ Ilgauskas says he’s most proud of his longevity after suffering all ther early injuries in his career.”

Honestly he annoyed me for following Bron wherever he went, but he had skill no doubt.

Good luck Big Z! He had a great career. He really defied the odds by coming back after those early injuries.

Can’t lie, as a Wizards fan, always hated the guy. Props to John Wall for mixing it up with him last season. Bye Z!

Following bron wherever he went…….?????? Really???

  • add

    how old is he?

I’ll miss Big Z, hopefully the Cavs offer him some sort of front office gig.

  • MikeC.

The Heat should retire his number. They retired Jordan’s #23, and Z actually played a few minutes for them.

Seriously, the Cavs should retire his number. He stuck with that team when they were garbage (although him sitting out chunks of seasons is part of why those teams were garbage), so it would be nice to see Big Z get some recognition for dedicating himself to the Cavs franchise. He could have easily hung up his sneaks when his feet were falling apart and he stuck through all that painful rehab and surgery after surgery so he could just keep playing.

I heard there was dancing in the streets of Miami. Any truth to that?

What has he done that proved him worthy of a front office gig?
co-sign MikeC though. 12 seasons with a team, an All-Star bid, big part of the team’s glory years, fan favorite. All sounds like a worthy resume to get your number up in the rafters.

D’awww, I like Z. I wish he had rode Miami’s pine until he got a ring.

  • DieselMechanic

He should stay busy by playing for the Goodman league team.

  • #6marjons

wish the big fella had got a ring. SA might need a big man for some fill in minutes during the next post season though keep your calender clear

Z says ‘Aš tiesiog pavargau, ir aš noriu eiti namo. Yow negali mušti lietuvių pūlingas’.

I lived in the same suburb as the guy when he was in Cleveland and he would be out walking his dogs and always say hi to all the kids. guy really was a model professional athlete. Cleveland has to honor his career somehow

He spent 12 years playing in one city, how is that living out of a suitcase? Ask Joe Smith about living out of a suitcase. lol. Happy trails Z!

Dammit Big Z U Can’t Do This Just A Few Days Before 2k12 comes out!!!!

  • andy

@dfrance21 I think his suitcase comment was referring to the 41 road games a season (plus more if they make the playoffs)?

  • Marcus Bastos

Great player. We’ll gonna miss him.

  • MUBWAR

  • knicker

cleveland has already retired his number?

  • fizzbucket

Sucks to go out as a member of the Heat because it kind of taints his legacy in a way, but otherwise a great career to be proud of.

He looks like the world’s largest Precog from Minority Report. Good for him though.

  • neaorin

Big Z can be a part of the Cavs’ basketball operations staff, help with the draft process, be the link between FO and players… He’d probably make a good scout for Europe as well, but he sounds like he’s done enough traveling to last a lifetime.

  • hambone

    cosign andy

  • Irfan

    Bye big bald fellow.

  • nbaNw8

I swear he said this for 3 years straight then came back and played.
