Magic Johnson Not Impressed With Ron Artest’s Name Change

During an appearance on “The Tonight Show”, Magic Johnson asked that Metta World Peace “come back down to Earth.” Right, good luck with that. From the LA Times: “Figuratively zipping his lips, Magic Johnson laid out a pretty decent reason why he couldn’t talk about the NBA lockout or the current Lakers. ‘Heavy fines if I talk about it,’ Johnson told NBC’s Jay Leno on the ‘Tonight Show,’ since he remains an executive vice president with the Lakers. ‘Like a million dollars.’ Apparently that zipper wasn’t too tight, because it only took a little bit of prodding before Johnson criticized Ron Artest’s decision to legally change his name to Metta World Peace. While Artest’s publicly stated he hopes the name change would bring more awareness to world peace, Johnson sees it as nothing more than a publicity stunt. ‘What is the announcer going to say, Jay?’ Johnson said. ‘How is he going to announce him? Ron, come back down to Earth please.’”

Magic is also disgusted at the world for calling him Magic all these years.

IM NOT IMPRESSED WITH MAGIC’S HOARDING OF THE CURE FOR HIV.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Magic’s teammate Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, BUT I guess Magic doesn’t believe that to be a publicity stunt, because it was for his religious beliefs. With that said, I do believe Ron Ron is seeking publicity, as always (lol), however his name change was for something positive peace. The name change whether or not it was for publicity, is for a good cause which is world peace, and that’s down to earth enough for me.

The Kareem name change it totally different. Even if it wasn’t for religious beliefs, Kareem, Abdul and Jabbar are still regular names. Metta World Peace is not. But I still think Magic needs to lay off of it. Whether his name is Ron, or Metta, he’s still going to be a space cadet. Just accept it.

Off topic, but why is “D-Wade: ‘I hear from LeBron that I’m the Worst Finisher in the League” ALWAYS listed under every post as a story I might be interested in? How is that related to Ron Artest’s name change?

  • http://slamonline.com Sean

Even with his name change… announcers, the media, and fans will still call him Ron Artest.

  • Don

Had no idea Artest changed his name…

I wonder if Lakers randomly drug test their players?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@dfrance21: Kareem Abdul Jabar in it’s arabic translation roughly means “Generous Servant of God”… I just can’t comprehend how using all Arabic words makes Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor name change anymore “regular” or “down to earth” than Ron Artest’s name change. On one hand you have Lewis wanting to be a generous servant of his god, and on the other hand you have Ron Artest wanting world peace. Don’t tell me you’re giving Kareem a pass just because his name change is behind religion, when almost all the wars we have in the world are started over religious beliefs. Give peace a chance. Advantage Ron Artest.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Metta World Peace is 4 syllables, where as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is 6 syllables. 4 syllables is easier to roll of the tongue, than 6. Advantage Metta World Peace.

EVERYONE’s name has some sort of meaning in some language if you look it up. For me, it has nothing to do with the origin or meaning of the names. I was saying Kareems’s name change was less controversial because, even if he DIDN’T change it for religious reasons, those are names that are not out of the ordinary to hear. Stop acting like Metta World Peace is some regular old name change just because he claims he did it to bring awareness to world peace. It’s not.

  • treetrunks

he’s still listed as Ron Artest on the Lakers official website…what’s up wit that?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Enough about Ron Artest. Lets talk about future MVP and Hall of Famer Chris Bosh the Macintosh. There is no doubt that Chris Bosh is the pinnacle of basktball Godliness.

  • treetrunks

why does it bother u so much, dfrance21?!

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

It doesn’t bother me at all! I’m just trying to explain why some people might be put off by it. It’s not normal. With that being said, I’m fine with it, he’s a grown man. I said Magic needs to lay of it. I swear people don’t read what I post.

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

@treetrunks They probably won’t update anything like that on the site until the season starts.

  • bike

Kareem Abdul Jabar is an intelligent, educated, scholar. Ron Artest is a latent psychopath who is pretending to reform. Sooner or later, he will go ape sh^t on the court, smash someone’s face in and the whole world will be laughing at his idiotic name change.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@Bike: Agreed, Kareem is very intelligent and a great guy, who also smokes weed while listening to Jazz, but don’t forget when he played ball, he once broke his hand punching Kent Benson in the face. I wonder how many games he’d be suspended if he did that in today’s NBA, and how the media would have treated him in this digital age. How many players has Ron Artest/Metta World Peace punched in the face while playing basketball? Zero.

  • Rugulose

^^^^ Hmm, are you by any chance familiar with November 19, 2004?!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Did Ron Artest/Metta World Peace break his hand punching Big Ben in the face? Nope. All he did was deliver a hard foul. Did Ron Artest/Metta World Peace punch the Piston fan in the face who essentially started the Malice in the Palace by throwing a beer at Ron Artest laying on the scorers table? Nope. I do remember Jermaine O’Neal and Captain Jack getting busy throwing some fist, but not Ron Artest. I’m not saying Artest didn’t play a roll in the brawl starting, but all he did was give Big Ben a hard foul. Big Ben didnt’ like it. The Piston fans were classless that night. Can’t compare that situation to Kareem punching Kent Benson in the face; that’s more similar to what happened to Rudy Tomjonovich when punched by Kermit Washington, not similar to Ron Artest jumping in the stands to find out who threw a beer at him.

  • EJ

Ron hit a fan, not a player. HA! And besides Ron hit him for a good cause. The man used alcohol for something else than drinking. You can’t just throw a beer at somebody, that’s alcohol abuse.
    Advantage, MWP.

  • Rugulose

Ah, good point, attacking fan in the stands not as serious as breaking hand on a player’s face! Good to know!

  • Rugulose

If only Kareem had a psychiatrist to thank after winning his championships!

  • gubbins

The lockout could end tomorrow if the NBA only had the foresight to see how much revenue they’ll get off selling ‘World Peace’ jerseys!

Pretty ironic coming from a guy who goes by his nickname. Professional athletes are entertainers. In my opinion, they should have the option to go by a stage name and not have their salaries available for public viewing unless by their own choosing.

  • Flud

Grown man. Who cares. So what. Get. Over. It. MVVP.

    Caveman:
    Magic never had HIV. (opinion)
He was rolling with the Bilderburgers when he came out with all of that jazz. (fact)
THEN he made a billion dollars.
    He was approached.

  • Red Star

@JTaylor21 I’m from Toronto so I hope your joking about Bosh! If not can you tell me where you get your Super Kush from!

  • Red Star

@The Philosopher Bilderberg Group! Damn most people don’t know about that stuff. AJ opened my eyes a couple years ago!!!

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

    @Red Star:
If you are talking about a particular “A.J.”, I think he is apart of “it”, too.
    Who knows, right?
I mean, were those people at Bohemian Grove really oblivious to “A.J”.’s presence?
    Really?
    Arguable.

  • http://www.slamonline.com UNFROZEN CAVEMAN LAWYER

PHIL, I AGREE. HE IS PART OF THE WHOLE COINTELPRO. I REMEMBER THAT GROVE STUFF FROM YEARS AGO. ITS A CONSTRUCTED ALTERNATIVE TO MAKE PEOPLE THINK THEY KNOW THE TRUTH. THEY WANT YOU TO THINK SOMEONE IS WATCHING YOU…. BUT I DONT SEE HOW MAGIC FITS IN WITH ALL THAT.

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

    Caveman:
At first, I did could not see how Magic fit in, either.
But, with everything that has happened with him…
    He’s not bright.
    At all.
    Starbucks, the movie theaters, Lowe’s…
In his prime, he was the premier athlete. Out of all of the major professional sports leagues. HE was “the man”. Those are the type of people that “they” approach. People with that “mass appeal”.
    From my understanding.
“They’ll” say, “Do this, and we’ll take care of you for the rest of your life”.
    He did “it.”
    He’s a billionare, now.
I would give up many things for a billion dollars.
    He, seemingly, “sacrificed” the Game.
And, with Bush Sr. by his side throughout the whole “thing” makes me suspicious.
In my mind, he HAD to have been approached.
I’ve always have, and always will love Earvin. But, how many billionaires in the history of the world are seemingly as dumb as Earvin Johnson Jr.?
Also, one can argue that Earvin got pissed because, Michael beat him on the biggest stage, didn’t want to come to terms with not being “the man” anymore, and gave it up.
I still sometimes wrestle with that notion.
But, I do not believe that Earvin ever had HIV.
And, if he did/does have it, his Illuminati connections are what’s keeping him looking better than he did whilst in the prime of his playing career.
