Mark Jackson: Coaching the Warriors ‘an Assignment from God’

Grantland caught up with the Golden State Warriors’ new head coach, who claims that God sent him to run the team: “Have you been able to devote more time to the ministry because of the lockout? ‘My wife and I are co-pastors at a church in L.A., so it’s really been a blessing for me, being able to be with my wife and kids and being able to be with my church family. Right now I’m sitting in a hospital. My church was hit with tragedy. A mom is fighting for her life upstairs with burns all over her body, and a 9-year-old kid was killed in the crash. The dad called me and, thankfully, I was 30 seconds away and able to be there. It’s extremely tough, but if there’s a season, I’m not there.’ Do you have to put your pastor duties aside once the NBA season starts? ‘I never put it aside. It’s a full-time call. My wife is the co-pastor, and I’m a man of tremendous faith. I believe that me being the head coach of the Golden State Warriors is an assignment from God. I look at it from both positions. The Bible says to whom much is given, much is required. So I don’t believe the pressures on me to perform both positions. Were you able to devote time to being a pastor when you were an analyst for ABC and ESPN? ‘I’ve done it every Sunday for the last two and a half years, with the exception of Sunday games on ABC and when there would be Sunday playoff games.’”

We live in a secular world. The USA is definitely a secular country. So Mark is going to be ridiculed for his comments. The good thing is he doesn’t care. Good for Mark Jackson.

ODD HOW MANY PEOPLE THINK THAT THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN AN INVISIBLE OMNIPOTENT BEING IN THE SKY WHO CONSTANTLY JUDGES EVERYONE, BUT ALSO MADE EVERYTHING THAT WAS AND WILL BE, AND CREATED ALL ACTIONS, INCLUDING KILLING BABIES, ETC, AND WHO HAS DEMANDS THAT ALL PEOPLE SHOULD FOLLOW, AND DONT FORGET MONEY, DOG IS ALL POWERFUL, ALL KNOWING, BUT HE CONSTANTLY NEEDS MONEY, HAVE THE MARKET CORNERED ON MORALITY. BUT WAIT, THERE IS HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF DIFFERENT BELIEF SYSTEMS, ALL OF WHICH BELIEVE THEY ARE RIGHT. HOW CAN THAT BE? AND DONT FORGET ALL THE WARS, AND GENOCIDES, ETC THAT HAVE BEEN DONE IN THE NAME OF RELIGION. HAS THERE BEEN A WORSE INFLUENCE ON HONEST HUMAN TOGETHERNESS THAN RELIGION?

A Pastor throwing around God’s name in vain like that? Really? Sometimes, a job is just a job and it’s got nothing to do with God. God didn’t put you on earth to coach the Warriors, just like God didn’t put Charles Barkley on earth to eat all the donuts

people common!! the man has his beliefs, as half of you believe in nothing, he believes in something!! we live in america, where being gay is somehow accepteble, cause love should be just that, LOVE…(i guess) but hey, everyone stop passing judgement, if he wants to believe that he was sended to earth to coach the warriors, then let it be!!! was i send to earth to deploy to iraq? to afghanistan? i dont f***** know, but it’s still a blessing to me! cause i’ve seen things over here, that half of you will never see…so, stop complaining about the lockout, stop judging and do something or say something productive next time, people!

  • lasae

Wow it’s so amazing to me the lack of respect that people have for Christ. It will really be interesting when most of us are on our death bed and realize that we will be spending way more time dead than we did alive what are opinions are of God then. even when I was not a Christian I understood that we didn’t just come to this earth on our own or by chance I always respected people who had a relationship with God. Most of these comments are so ignorant on hear that people should be ashamed of themselves. I wish Mark Jackson the best of luck in all he does and I hope people begin to really look at life and not just sports basketball is just a game where you will spend eternity is not. I love basketball however I love Christ more and will always defend him.

If you believe humans tend towards honest togetherness your are only fooling yourself.
Really, your examination of the motivations of humanity has led you to believe that if we didn’t have religion, all these problems would be limited?
    Um…. Ok.

  • rob stewart

When Jesus Christ came to this earth He too was viewed as different, peculiar, and unconforming to the wrong thinking and actions in society. I’m sure Mark Jackson knows this and I am proud of him for his work, perseverance, and leadership. I don’t think a person can make someone believe anything, especially with a debate. But if you just earnestly try Jesus for yourself I am sure you will come to your own awesome conclusion. Success is not always in W’s and L’s.

  • EJ

When I’m on my death bed I really REALLY hope there’s no afterlife, or actually I’m not worried at all by that.
But anyway, imagine how boring it would be if you existed forever. I don’t care if it’s paradise, hell or whatever, eventually you’ll run out of things to do. And then you’re just gonna exist. Forever. Doing nothing.
And LakeShow, I think you’re very ignorant if you think when something has no explanation, = Dog.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

EJ, educate me. Tell me how it all started. Tell me how we came to be on this perfect planet. Help me to no longer be ignorant. Since I am not intelligent for my beliefs tell me what what the intelligent answer is. I’ll wait…

  • O

I got mad love and respect for Mark Jackson. That’s my nucca. And while I don’t subscribe to any traditional form of religion, I do believe in God, Allah, Jehova, Yahweh – whatever you choose to call him. But to say that coaching the Golden State Warriors is an assignment from the almighty, I don’t know, man. I respect that he feels God put this challenge on his path, that’s all good, but I feel that when anyone says anything is an “assignment from God” then that opens the door for allllll kinds of criticism and unnecessary religious jokes should things not go well. I don’t think ANYONE’S religious beliefs should be made fun of if it’s demeaning.

always interesting when God and/or religion is in a conversation. How do Christians view the Buddhism?

Ok, y’all want a theory? Caveman and LakeShow are both right. Albert Einstein theorized that perception and therefore is all relative. Based on experiments, scientists have found that actual REALITY differs based simply on observation. Thus, in Caveman’s perception of reality, he sees no god and therefore, the reality becomes no god. With LakeShow, he perceives the existence of God and therefore, in his reality, God exists. This theory also accounts for the mass diversity of other belief systems.

Always interesting when a person of faith talks down to an atheist about their beliefs and vice versa. Judge people by what they do, not what they say or believe.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I really don’t like when people blame religion for man’s problems any religion. Look humans as a group tend to be selfish and cruel which is all you need for all the problems we have seen in history.

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

I have no problem with other religious beliefs, I just feel that its a little fricolous when people thank God for any and everything that they do. They thank him for winning a BET award, winning the scoring title, catching the winning TD pass. I just feel like its thrown around too easily, and hey, why not give yourself some credit for the hard work?

  • vinnamese

Shut up caveman. Ill believe whatever the f*ck i want. Some idiot on an internet site who ive never seen who thinks writing in caps makes his points more valid is not going to change my or anyone elses beliefs. To each their own i say.

  • MikeC.

^ @ unf*ckwitable: you say “To each their own” and also say “Shut up” to someone who is expressing their own opinion? That is very contradictory and undermines your statement.

  • MikeC.

I enjoy debates about religion. It can be a lot of fun when people can go back and forth without injecting passion. The problem is that neither side can prove that they’re right which is where passion and hurt feelings step in. I was raised in a Christian home with weekly treks to church where we were told that everything good in the world was because of God and everything bad in the world was because of me. At some point, I started to wonder why good things couldn’t be because I worked for them and bad things happened because the world is ishty and bad things just happen. I was sick a lot as a kid, and read a lot. I was into comics as a kid, and that led me to get into mythology (Thor, Hercules, etc.). I liked reading about stuff like the Baccanalia and Dionysiac festivals. Sounded an awful lot like Communion to me. So much of Christian rituals are straight up jacked from the religions they absorbed. As regions were conquered, their local religions were just absorbed into Christian rituals so that those regions would be more easily pacified. It’s all mythology, whether it’s Greek, Roman, Norse, Persian or Christian. Story time is fun. Eventually it’s replaced by something else. If we don’t ruin our planet for future generations, eventually they’ll move on to something new and they’ll be reading about Christian mythology the same way we read about Hercules, Thor, Ares, Hades, Zeus, etc.

@Mikec maybe your. Ive got no problem with watever anyone wants to believe but dont try and force your beliefs on others. Caveman doesnt believe in god? good for him but he shouldnt be going around bagging any religon. His stupid rant reminds a lot of a religous extremist trying to force their religon on others which leads to some sort of argument/fight/violence/genocide. Speaking about someones religon like that is a great way to p*ss people off. You dont have to hide your beliefs but like i said, dont force them.

Maybe your *right* was my first sentence.

  • MikeC.

I don’t want to put words in Caveman’s keyboard, but I think he was talking more about the leaders of the major religions than the deities that rule them. Beliefs, for the most part, have good at the center. Religion is where things get twisted. If someone feels a certain thing, then feel that feeling for all it’s worth. Enjoy yaself. Trying to make it into group-think is where things get all effed up. When people start saying stuff like “our feeling is right and your feeling is wrong” is when guns and bombs and other monumentally ridiculous things come into play. Just feel your feeling, enjoy how it makes you feel. Trying to pass it on is how epidemics occur.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I think the Bible is truly the word of god but the religious leaders of the world don’t actually teach the truth regarding it: Thats why we have blatant hypocrisy around us.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

co-sign allenp @8:32, very imortant distinction.
@caveman, and u seem to think that cavemen are your ancestors. Everybody that is religios does not beleive that God is in the a body in the sky, those are called anthropomorphists. And to blame religions for wars is ridiculous, the 20th century, with the 2 world wars, and the slaughter that america has been carrying out for the last decades are are secular wars that have nothing to with religion, the same goes for the killings at the hands of the communists. These wars have killed of way more people than any religious wars that were ever fought.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

@dacre which version of the bible do u think is the word of God, or did he reveal several books?

  • Morgan

@spit hot fiyah – Does the second world war not count as a war based on religion? Did the Nazis not kill people because they were Jewish or do I need to pay a bit more attention to the history channel?..Religion impacts a lot of wars simply because people are very passionate about their beliefs. Your last statement isn’t entirely correct though, the Crusades wiped out a lot of people and a lot of Genocides have been carried out on religious groups.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

@morgan the motives of the nazis were to eliminate the ones that were not of a superior race according to them, the jews belonged to that group. The nazis were not religions, that’s what i meant, i don’t blame the jews for being persecuted.yes the crusades were terrible and a distaster no doubt, as were many other religious wars, but numbers wise the sucular wars of the 20th century and what is ongoing are responsible for more peoples deaths, and this is only in the span of about 100 years.

  • EJ

LakeShow, I’m not saying you’re ignorant cause your belief would be “wrong”, but I’m saying it because you jump into conclusions out of nowhere, just cause is no certain explanation os how everything started.
I think it was Einstein or somebody who said something like the only thing he’s sure of is human stupidity. So for now atleast, the only reasonable thing to say is IDK. Cause jumping to conclusions out of nowhere and basing your life on that is not smart. Just saying.

  • Morgan

@spit hot fiyah – good point, I would agree with your points about numbers but that may also be due to the fact that in the last 100 years we as a species have found more destructive means to kill each other. Its shocking to think what we’ll be capable of in the next 100 years…

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

vinnamese, that was a joke right?

  • T. Brown

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen,” (Hebrews 11:1)… Without faith you can’t understand Mark Jackson’s point of view but I applaud him for staying true to what he believes… It’s amazing how cynical and disrespectful atheists are at the very mention of God.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

@morgan yes it’s scary, my point was also that these destructive means have been invented and implemented by secularist and not religous groups

If there was no religion, humans would still be dealing with oppression, greed, violence, etc.
Without religion, however, there would be one less INSTITUTION through which oppression manifests itself. But oppression can occur given any institution, really.

It’s Sunday, and I think some of y’all need to click my name and listen to the teacher, KRS-One’s, “The Truth.” I say listen listen, open up your third eye vision. God is not down with religion. Religion, they be selling it. Listen up, god is intelligent. Reading of the bible is irrelevant. YOU GOTTA LOOK WITHIN YOURSELF NOT A SCRIPTURE. KRS-One comes to rearrange the God picture. IF YOU SIT AND BELIEVE, YOU CAN ACHIEVE! IF YOU SIT AND ACCEPT, YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT’S CORRECT OR INCORRECT. Take for instance Adam and Eve. The first two people on the planet, or so you believe. Their first time in heaven kids they had, Cain and Abel. Huh, now let me show you why the story’s unstable. According to the story, according to what you believe there was only Cain, Abel, Adam, and Eve on the whole planet, now use your intellect and tell me, what did Cain and Abel do for sex? Upon the whole planet there was not another. Could it be for sex, heh, they were looking at each other? Hold up! I thought the church wasn’t into that, but wait, still yet, there is another fact. How did the world get populated? Now tell me if I’m wrong, but obviously Eve had it goin on. Think for a minute…I know it gets notorious!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

KRS ONE might want to actually read the Bible before making stupid comments.
Assuming that there were only four people on the plant is a big fail, as is reading the Bible as an exhaustive account of early mankind.
