NBA Labor Deal ‘Within Striking Distance’

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

A somewhat surreal scene played out last night following the latest round of NBA labor talks: David Stern and Billy Hunter stood in the same room, trading smiles and joking with one another in front of a stunned media contingent.

Both sides of the debate once again expressed optimism about the negotiations; there’s a feeling among some that the framework of a deal could be reached as soon as today.

Yahoo! Sports takes a look:

“It’s moved to a very good place,” one source briefed on Thursday’s 7½-hour bargaining session told Yahoo! Sports. “There’s a strong expectation [within the negotiations] that hands will shake [Friday].”

Negotiations will resume at 10:30 a.m. ET Friday with talks expected to quickly progress to the proposed revenue split between the league’s owners and players. Both sides sounded optimistic they could soon settle the major issues separating them from a new collective bargaining agreement. “I think we’re within reach – and within striking distance of getting a deal,” Players Association executive director Billy Hunter said. “It’s just how receptive the NBA is, and whether they want to do a deal.”

NBA commissioner David Stern declared it will be a “failure” for the league’s owners and players if a new labor agreement isn’t finished within the next few days.

Despite the encouraging signs, danger still lurks.

The highly divisive issue of Basketball-Related-Income (BRI) is expected to once again be tackled during today’s critical meeting, as are the major details of player contracts, punitive luxury tax and team payrolls.

119 days into the NBA lockout, it looks like we may at last be nearing the end of this nightmare.

Well, maybe …

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4C1DVoMJoEI Shecky Shabazz

According to ESPN more games will be cancelled. So Much for being within striking distance…

    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/7153136/david-stern-announce-more-game-cancellations-sources-say

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Hey shecky – They will need to reduce the season length going forward, players need to get into training camp, there will need to be an opportunity for teams to speak with unrestricted free agents and get new contracts signed too. It’s understandable and not too big an issue that games are cancelled… games being cancelled is ALOT better looking than the season being cancelled. Will Steve Nash ‘strong arm it’ to get out of Arizona though??

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Yeah, they started talking about the money, and the owners won’t budget off that 50/50 BRI split. They know they have public opinion on their side with that number particularly since most fans don’t know or care that a 50/50 BRI split is not a 50/50 split of revenues in any way.
    Oh well.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The owners actually want 53, but have offered a 50/50 take it or leave it offer because they during the next set of negotiations (not a Strike) will be able to start at 50% – basically the players are the only people giving anything up.

  • LA Huey

What’s the over/under on the owners trying to get a bigger slice of the BRI after this next CBA expires?
Also, I wonder how much the players have even tried to include all the excluded revenue into the BRI and agreeing to a 50/50 split.

  • http://slamonline.com cold as ice

here’s my question. isnt the referee’s in a lockout as well??? so when it is all said an done with the union and nba. whats next??? how long is that lockout with theref’s gonna take???because 1st u gotta take of the main issue before u tackle the lil ones. hopefully that lockout is ended quickly

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

The referring issue is not such a big one either – Salary packages will include all the usuals; flights accommodation and a travel allowance…lack of transparency to bet on/control outcomes of huge playoff games involving the Phoenix Suns…the usual stuff.

    ^ LOL.

Watching these “negotiations” unfold reminds me a lot of watching the movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray. Click my name.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

The ref lockout was wrapped up like a month ago I believe

  • ab40

when they started talking about bri billy hunter said he wouldn’t go a penny below 52% BRI after communicating with a lot of agents. He closed his books and walked away. So the final two percent have to go and we’ll have a 50-50 split.. it’s gonna happen just not now. FIRE BILLY HUNTER he’s still getting paid over a mil a year

  • Rainman

    lmao Dacre FTW

  • http://h2hoops.wordpress.com/ Habeeba

    Yeah, Friday didn’t happen.

  • dan

they should lock all these greedy guys – players and owners – up in a room and not let em out b4 they dont get it done

  • http://slamonline.com cold as ice

@nbk hopefully that ref situation is cleared up. because whenever this lockout ends and if there’s a season. i dont want any other surprises poppin up to delay the season. i see players doing charity gms for the fans and to make a buck. owners what are they doing for the fans???

  • sophmore

strike as in basketball not having to look up and1 vids or strike as in having to look up and1 vids

  • Jorge

It’s the owners who paid for their team, pay the players, employ arena employees, so why do they have to give up more of their basketball related income? Players are employees!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Jorge, the players are NOT “employees”, they’re contractors.

  • Justin

cold as ice, what do you want the owners to do? Suit up and play a game? I believe it’s Philadelphia that’s already dropping ticket prices and I can see a lot of other teams doing the same once this is done. And don’t kid yourself about the players having these games just for the fans or just for charity. They’re getting money to play as well. They know the fans are with the owners right now (the smart ones anyway) and are trying to get some of that back

  • Jorge

Contractor or not still an employee of the ones who employ them. Unions are major problems in professional sports.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

^ So are team owners who don’t realise that in every competition, in every league in every sport… someone has to finish at the bottom of the ladder….
