Shaquille O’Neal Joins Fight Against Bullying of Gays, Lesbians

Shaquille O’Neal, alongside Golden State Warriors executive Rick Welts, has been enlisted by the folks at GLAAD in an effort to reduce bullying of gays and lesbians. From the San Fran Chronicle: “As part of National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, Shaquille O’Neal is teaming up with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) to launch its ‘Amplify Your Voice!’ campaign, and Warriors President Rick Welts will be honored Oct. 21 by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) during their seventh annual Respect Awards gala in Los Angeles. The Warriors named Welts president and chief operating officer in September to oversee business-related operations and report directly to owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber. He had a nine-year stint with the Phoenix Suns as president and was chief executive officer the past two seasons. In an effort to breach what he sees as a stigma against homosexuality in men’s team sports, Welts revealed in May that he is gay. Four months later, he resigned from the Suns.”

there is a lot of foolishness in here.
Bullying may be a part of life, but that doesn’t make it acceptable. I remember reading about an 8-year old little boy who committed suicide because of bullying. That ain’t cool.
Yes, it’s true that people will not like you in life and will treat you poorly and you need to adapt. But bullying crosses the line. It allows the strong to prey on the weak. And we have enough of that in life, it’s time to try to counteract those impulses.
I’ve bullied and I’ve been bullied. I’ve fought and I’ve cried. I think that kids have enough stuff to deal with in their little brains without adding in bullying and ridiculous peer pressure.

  • andre anglais

Good for Rudy, Amazing to see Shaq stand up for this. Caveman, get your head out your a**. Kids who are gay in high school go through a hell of bullying that you know nothing about. Yes, most kids get bullied, but gay youths frequently have nowhere, even home, where they are not subjected to it. Suicide attempts are 3X more common in youths who are gay.

Unfortunately, bullying, peer pressure, and harassment are a reality of life. Not only in high school; it can affect people at all stages of life. It will never go away. People need to learn how to deal with it. There will always be people that will not accept the gay lifestyle and gay people need to come to grips with that fact. No amount of education or enforcement is going to ensure protection from harassment.

What do you mean “get used to it”?
Should Jewish people get “used” to anti-semetic behavior?
Or should people get used to racism?
Nah, you try to counteract stuff that’s wrong.
We all struggle with complacency. Many of us feel that the world has gone “soft.” But the reality is that some of the bullying these kids face is ridiculous. Whether you support homosexuality or not, it’s not cool to treat people with cruelty. It’s just not.
It could be your kids or loved ones next time. And Lord forbid they take a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Kids are stronger than we realize, but also very fragile in some ways too.

  • Heals

Caveman I totally agree with your initial premise, but nowadays there seems to be a extra/added element to the bullying these particular kids experience. I can’t properly explain it having never dealt with it personally, but I dunno it just seems different than the traditional bullying we grew up with. Whether it’s those being bullied needing more outlets/support/backbone or the bullies having more outlets to bully people through or deeper issues of their own, but somethings up cause kids are killing themselves…

Cosign caveman. This country is getting so soft. If you can’t handle school “bullies”, how will you handle the real world where your parents and teachers can’t fight your battles for you?

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance21 Dfrance

I think the perception is that the bullying is worse today because we are in the “youtube” era when a lot of these acts are recorded and put on the web for our immediate viewing. That element also adds to the embarrassment of the bullied party. I’ve seen some pretty effed up things bully-wise growing up, we just didn’t have cell phones to record them. And while I do feel that today’s youth is babied to a certain extent, I would never put down someones attempt to intervene.

  • treetrunks

bullyin has nothin to do with “the real world”, u wankers..can u discriminate you’re colleague cuz he’s gay? i dont think so..look what happened to Kobe..and if this was about racism nobody would ever say what u said CAVEMAN..imagine a kid in a white school being bullied cuz he’s black and u tellin him to deal with it cuz that’s “real life”..nobody would ever dream of sayin that…but that’s exactly what gays go thru, they’re always a minority..good that Shaq joins the fight, there’s obviously still a lot to do..

  • http://slamonline.com BossTerry

Haha @ Yknot @ 9:44.. And Cosign everything the Caveman said.. Things are much, much softer than they were when I was a kid.. My daughter was suspended from school (in the 3rd grade) for saying “Im gonna kill you” to a classsmate who was making fun of her.. In my day, even an attempt probably wouldn’t land a suspension (again, for a 3rd grader).

  • treetrunks

why do people say it’s soft to tell kids not to discriminate? again we’re talking about discrimination..i’m black & went to white schools all my life..and yes, i’ve been bullied because of my skin color..and it really isn’t fun..nuthin to do wit being soft..

Evidently, the average age of a gay kid coming out has been coming down in the last 25 years. The younger a kid comes out; such as in middle school, the tormenting by peers is much more severe than if someone comes out later such as in the senior year of high school. The level of bullying goes down as peers become more mature.

  • EJ

“If you can’t handle school “bullies”, how will you handle the real world where your parents and teachers can’t fight your battles for you?”
Word, we all know how supporting the parents of a gay kid can be.

  • EJ

And wether you get support or not, bullies are just pussies who are angry about their tiny dicks or something like that. Big ups Shaq.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Kids should not be bullied period, but if a student comes out the closet and is a guy and states I like other guys that have the same parts of him. Then what do you expect to happen. Everyone be happy about it. This is America where gays are trying to compare there struggle with blacks. Which is very very stupid. I am black, didn’t choose it, but love it. Someone who is gay chooses it, for themself. I don’t believe anyone should be gay, based off the bible, but if they won’t to do it, its there thing-they can do what they want to do. Lets keep it real, The bible states Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. I will leave it like that. I just feel bad for people who think liking their own gender is cool, they are mentally lost. BOOK IT!!

^It’s that Seed! Doodily doddly diddly deedly doo!

  • Waggle

And right on cue, it’s the Seed ladies and gentlemen!

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

@The Seed – That’s right, guys in America right now are thinking, “You know what? being gay is what what I want to do. It’ll increase my chances of being taken seriously in sports and manual occupations, it will mean I get paid more, it will mean I’m given respect in the street, it will mean people will take me as I am. I won’t get bullied, I won’t get beaten, I won’t get killed. I won’t be vilified or hated for it. There’s so many advantages to being gay over being straight I’m ditching the chicks and going queer. Yeah!”
Uh huh. That’s what they do. They choose it.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

A lot of stupid comments in this thread. Not even gonna bother with the Seed.
And LOL @ the “soft” argument. That’s like saying: “Everyone gets a fever once in a while, so I’m not gonna take this tylenol to relieve my headache… Gotta learn to deal with these 102 degree fevers.”

  • T-Money

Morgan: what doesnt kill you makes you stronger… Except when it actually kills you. This is some real sh– , bullying is a very serious issue.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

A little off-topic but honestly, this insane fear of sexuality (leading to a fear of gay people as well) permeating society really holds the human race back. You can show somebody’s head being severed in a movie (Kill Bill) but you can’t show a naked body? That makes sense…

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Lot of fake tough guys on this thread. It’s all rah rah talk until it’s you or your kid that’s on the receiving end.

  • Blakos

The seed needs to be casturated for the good of mankind. He should not be allowed to spread his seed…..

  • Jer Boi

Being gay is a mental disorder. That’s why the majority of them talk the same way. It shouldn’t be accepted they should try to fix it! If the whole world was gay humans would cease to exist.. but that’s just my opinion..

  • EJ

Yea Seed I’m sure all those fishes and birds and everything just choose to be gay, cause of the gay friendly culture we have these days.
And oh yea, talk about “sexual purity” in the Bible. If it’s Adam and Eve, and they got Cain and Able, they must’ve smushed Eve to reproduce. Or if not that then they must’ve reproduced with animals. Oh them dirty gays giving us aids!
And Jer Boi, there’s almost 7 billion humans and only about 5% are gay. Yes, we’re on the brink of extinction.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

@Jer Boi – If the majority of a group speaking the same way proves ‘mental disorder’ then the English language is the lingua franca of the nuthouse.
On top of that, the fact idiots like you are so outwardly homophobic can keep people who are gay and atypical of what you consider gay from coming out and proving to you how wrong your stereotypes are.

  • DieselMechanic

This is a great cause. There is so much inherent bullying of gays within our society. The message sent to youth at a very young age is that it is not ok to be gay whether it’s in our comedy or when somebody says something is gay to mean wack. The bullying they go through is different than what straight ppl go thru.

  • http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/31975/the-art-of-irony Allenp

Why would you assume that Adam and Eve only had three children?
Because those are the only three children named in the Bible? Did you notice that the Bible rarely discusses women children? Or that it’s not a comprehensive account of human history?
Most likely, they slept with their sisters, to reproduce.

  • http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/31975/the-art-of-irony Allenp

Or their nieces. There was no prohibition, biblical or otherwise, on this act because those prohibition would not be instituted for hundreds of years.
On the issue of incest creating deformities, that wouldn’t be the case using the logic that Adam and Eve were both “perfect” humans created without the deformities that would arise in later generations due to mutations over time. Thus, they and their children, which according to Jewish tradition were nearly 60, would have been able to intermarry with close cousins or siblings without the issues of today.

  • EJ

Why would I assume they had 3 children? I don’t assume Adam and Eve had 3 kids, the Bible says thay had only Cain and Able.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

@EJ – “the Bible says thay had only Cain and Able”. Try reading the bible before quoting it, eh?
“When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. 4 After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

Weird how misinformation and ignorance always show up in pro-homophobic comments. Wait, no, that’s not weird.

  • Lance Pieratt

Shaq: I used to like you, but now I don’t. Anyone who supports sin is obviously not doing what the Bible says. 1 Timothy 5:20 tells us to “rebuke” sin so the sinner might repent (turn from) the sin and turn to Christ. I love all homosexuals, but sin is sin and will not be allowed in Heaven. Luke 13:3, Revelation 20:15, Romans 1, Leviticus 20:13.
