Report: Lamar Odom Agrees to Join Besiktas in Turkey

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

Deron Williams may soon have a new, familiar teammate in Turkey. According to ESPN, Lamar Odom (who shares an agent with DWill) has agreed in principle to join the ballclub Besiktas.

Should an NBA labor deal fail to materialize over the weekend, Odom will shuffle over to Turkey and start hooping again:

Final details will not be sorted out before Friday, sources said, but Odom has indicated that he plans to join the Istanbul-based team as early as next week if the NBA lockout continues. Sources told ESPN.com that the deal would pay Odom in excess of $2 million if he spends the rest of the season with Besiktas. The deal — first reported in Turkey by NTV Spor and local journalist Mete Aktas — will include an opt-out clause to return to the NBA as soon as the lockout ends, same as in [Deron] Williams’ contract.

Besiktas has been trying for days to acquire a top-flight big man to pair with Williams, who erupted for 50 points Tuesday in a EuroChallenge game against Gottingen of Germany. Besiktas wanted a big man from the NBA even before Cleveland Cavaliers forward Semih Erden suffered a thumb injury in the win over Gottingen.

Should Lamar Odom go over to Turkey next week, Besiktas will have reached the maximum limit of foreign players signed (2).

This deal isn’t just basketball-related, of course. It turns out that the reality TV show starring Lamar Odom’s wife, Khloe Kardashian, is popular in Turkey, despite her Armenian roots.

They might as well take the deal from the owners.
    Nope.
They want to take lesser deals from lesser entities.

By the time he signs with Besiktas, E! is gonna have new spinoff called Khloe and Lamar in Turkey. Ugh.

    And the rich get richer.
    Eurocup champs.

Not so fast, Jukster. Sadly Besiktas isn’t playing Eurocup this season. Eurochallenge, 1 level lower and two lower than Euroleague.
Eurocup might go to Valencia who just added Tiago (saw his fantastic debut game 2 nights ago).
But the turkish league’s list of Nva players keeps growing. I count 8 current Nba players in the top 6 ranked teams of the TBL.
Not sure but probably the most of any European country right now. Guess Erdogan’s economic growth programs are making the turkish tycoons pay up for stars atm.

The american way. Get a job that pays well(NBA) the company folds, you get a job thats payin less to pay the bills.

  • umm

why are players so willing to join a turkish league when they be going to top ranked euro league teams…

Dark, damn. How does a third level team have so much money to throw around?
    I feel ignant.

I’ll just copy/paste my comment from another thread in here for you, Jukai. They are third level in the continental Club comp this year, (were in the Eurocup last year, bowed out in the last 16) but right now 2nd in a strong turkish league. They messed up the Eurocup qualifiers in September so they got bounced down to the Eurochallenge. Here’s the comment:
    >But in each of the big european leagues (Spain, Russia, Italy, Turkey,Greece, France and Serbia/Croatia) there are Tycoons and/or Companies who bankroll the top teams.
Besiktas, if memory serves me well, is backed by a businessman who has his hands in the liquid gas industry etc.
Salary caps etc vary (if at all existent) from country to country, so it’s no surprise to see well funded teams like Barcelona, Pana, CSKA, Maccabi T.A. make it far domesticaly and in the Euroleague. The difference in Budgets between top teams and bottom feeders is ridiculous.
That’s how Besiktas, Galatasary, Efes and a few others in the turkish league are affording expensive NBA (and other national team) players. Right now the following are balling in Turkey alone:
Vujacic, Ilyasova, Williams, Erden, Sefolosha, Pachulia, Okur. With Odom soon to join Besiktas, this makes 8 NBA guys playing for the some of the top 6 teams in the TBL. (16 teams total)
    Money talks<

  • YoLu

Looks like they might be opting out of these contracts soon. Wooooooo!!

I’m with BlackPhantom. 1st he married the only ugly Kardashian (hell, even the guy woulda been a better pick up) then he agrees to a deal that literally lasts less than 24 hours

  • Exile

    That sound you hear?
About two dozen international club owners cursing the day they hitched their wagon to semi-available NBA players. Nuggets better have some dough ready for the KMart/Chandler/JR buyouts
Can’t wait for the drama, E! Should cover that ish instead of the fat booty ignorants.

  • Brahsef

Players called the owners bluff and actually won. Thank God, basketball here we come.

No more ugly ass college ball
