Warren Sapp: LeBron James Would Get Destroyed in the NFL

Due to the sheer boredom caused by the ongoing NBA lockout, there’s been chatter about how LeBron James would fare in the NFL. According to former defensive star Warren Sapp, it wouldn’t be a very pretty sight for LBJ. Per USA Today: “He’s a tremendous athlete, probably the best physical specimen you’ll see in sports,’ former NBA star Jalen Rose said of King James while serving as a guest panelist on NFL Network’s No Huddle on Wednesday night. ‘The one thing about football — you can go up for the football — I don’t think his feet’ll hit the ground on the way down because they will take him out. I think that game is too physical, I think it’s too demanding, I think that it’s hard to block defensive ends — it’s more to that job of being a tight end than just running routes.’ Fellow analyst Warren Sapp said James would also be a marked man in the NFL. ‘How about LeBron do one-sixth of what (Michael) Jordan did, let’s see him go win a championship,’ Sapp said. ‘Go do that. Go see if you can conquer your sport before you come over here because them boys on defense, we like pretty boys like that. We want to split them.’”

    So Lebron is a…Pretty boy?

  • Sean B

He’s dumb… of course LeBron would get destroyed if he just tried to switch sports now.

When people bring this question up, I like to think of it as if LeBron had committed to football over basketball… then how would he be? There’s no doubt he’d probably be the best tight end in the game, just look at what guys like Gronkowski and Jeremy Graham are doing, the #’s they are putting up.

LeBron is the best athlete on the planet, he could conquer any sport had he devoted his time to it, instead we are lucky to have him on the basketball court.

  • BlackStar

Lol … I’m not a huge Bron fan, but everybody is putting in their two cents on dude. It’s ridiculous. I’m sure he’d hand some punishment out to a few people, but NFL players really would be aiming to destroy him.

  • Justin

Not sure about that one. What they should ask is “If someone with Lebron’s size, strength, speed, and athleticism played in the NFL how would he fare?” Then you take out the whole “marked man” thing out of the equation. I think you could potentially see a heck of a player from a physical standpoint. It’s the mental standpoint where there would be question marks

Er…so, he didn’t actually say anything about LBJ getting destroyed. He said LBJ would be a target.

Think the headline is on too much of a hype.

    Nothing to see here.

So lebron hasn’t conquered on the basketball court? Besides a championship (team accomplishment) what else can lebron james do? Hes a top defensive player, top offensive player, made the cavaliers relevant, 2 back to back mvps, triple double threat every night, UNSTOPPABLE in the open court, one of the highest basketball iq’s in the game, he is basically the reason why the nba changed the age restrictions, and no matter what haters have to say about him, he is still the best basketball player on earth. It’s just very annoying to hear people bash him for every single aspect of his life. It blinds people of how great his career has been thus far.

im really not a fan of warren sapp

  • DieselMechanic

    lol @ LA

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

So this headline is 100% false? Really Slam? What are you, People Magazine? And Warren Sapp saying they go after “pretty boys” – Weird how Chad Ochocinco has never been “Split” by defensive players….dude had a TV show where he wanted to fall in love, and is now dating a basketball wife. I’m not saying I think LeBron would succeed, or even try to play in the NFL, but I am saying Warren Sapp is an idiot

  • brad

Lebron not the reason they changed the age restrictions. Kwame Brown, Eddy Curry and Telfair are reasons why they changed it.

  • bike

There seems to be this mentality among some NFL players that no one outside their clique could stand a chance of surviving their brand of toughness. No doubt some NBA players would make decent NFL players in some of the skill positions including LeBron. Many NBA players are very similar in build to NFL receivers and they have the same level of athletic ability.

  • truthteller

@23: Kobe got bashed for everythhing he did. Fans got over it. So, you get over it!

  • fruizm

i dont know about this LBJ in the NFL…what i do know is that football players think theyre the toughest, but in reality, theyre just childs play for rugby players!!

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

F*ck the National Flag-football League. I guess Sapp hasn’t seen NFL games for the past 2-3 seasons because defenders are not allowed to “split” receivers.

  • T-Money

then why is jimmy graham not getting “destroyed” in football? he was a mediocre basketball player at the u! this is getting silly, do we need to ask everybody and their moms what they think of lebron doing X or saying Y?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    Antonio Gates.

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com yada

so u mean to tell me danny whitehead can kill!! even tall guys like tony gonzalez who played ball can become the 2nd all time leading reciever. but lebron would get destroyed somehow? cough!! football players really are envious that bball players can come play their sport but they cant switch over to hoops TRUTH!!

haha @ yada: I think so too.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Warren Sapp aka Beanie Sigel sounds like a huge hater here. And I rarely use the word hater… “Go see if you can conquer your sport.” Really? The best player in the NBA hasn’t conquered his sport enough for you? lol… I’d also like to see him–or anyone else at his position–catch LeBron in an open field.

  • http://nba.com GP23

    jealousy is a b*tch..

  • @Deknowz

I just lost all respect for Warren Sapp, straight hater! Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t the most DOMINANT wide out in the modern era RANDY MOSS an ex-basketball player that made a career of running fly routes? Terrel Owens an ex-basketball player Dominated, Gonzo put up numbers for year and funny enough has tried out for the heat on a few occasions. So what they’re telling me is LeBron can’t line up in the spread wide right and put in WORK?! Do we forget Bron Bron was offered an open college football scholarship to wherever he wanted to put a helmet on? Who’s winning a jump ball in the back of the endzone with him? Miss me with that bullsh*t!

  • EtheKnickFan

In his prime, do you think Sapp could’ve played in the NBA?

  • bigmike100

    @ teddy Beanie Sigel lmao

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

It sounds like Warren Sapp really enjoys Lebron James’ company.

  • shutupallenp

Wasnt warren sapp on dancing with the stars?
    pretty boys? lol smh

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

Lebron is just happy someone called him a pretty boy.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    OTB is Warren Sapp.

  • Mel

I don’t like LBJ but the argument is pretty stupid. Of course he will be torn up if he switched sports because he has not accustomed himself to the normal game day fitness regime. Warren Sapp shouldn’t talk too much — he’ll get torn up if he plays Rugby or Australian Rules football. lol

  • JLT

There’s plenty of basketball players that could play football if they wanted to. Basketball players don’t lift as many weights because it throws off their shot. Nor do the intentionally try to add on pounds. But if they switched to football, the diet and exercise routine would change accordingly. Just imagine if Lebron worked out for football instead of basketball … he’d be frightening! He could play offense or defense. I even think some point guards with their mobility, height and skill would make great Quarterbacks … Rondo, Nash, Kid, etc.

Lol, I’m not sure why y’all are valuing Warren Sapp’s opinion but oh well.

  • http://slamonline ottoman

They would love for somebody who makes more in 1 game than the average NFL player does in a year. LBJ don’t blink. Ouch. John Lynch would come out of retirement for this. Come on just one hit.
Dwight Howard takes more of a beating. I would love for the referees to look the other way when he gets hit in head like Howard. Of coarse Howard doesn’t grab his head and fall to the floor either.

  • shutupallenp

@jlt dont forget about charlie ward former knicks point guard who won the heisman

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

It is a money thing. NFL players are sort of envious of the contracts basketball players get.

  • http://slamonline.com #kiwiinlondon

“Warren Sapp shouldn’t talk too much — he’ll get torn up if he plays Rugby or Australian Rules football. lol” Mel – that’s so true. RUGBY would eat Warren Sapp and Lebron James

  • robb

Depends on the position. As a WR I don’t think Lebron would get destroyed. As a TE, he probably would.

  • noballer

Sapp is just insulted because Lebron thinks he can come into the NFL and take over.

  • montanabrand

Lebron gets so much love from the refs, it’s sickening. He charges more than any other player and just bowls defenders over on the way to the bucket. He has no moves and has an “above average” mid range jumper and 3. He has to attack the basket and lowers his shoulder repeatedly and bullrushes the hoop. SSooo overrated.

Reporter: Lebron, why did you try to pass the ball after making a catch 2 yards from the endzone in the 4th quarter?

Bron: Well, I’m a distributor. I was trying to get my teammates involved…

He wouldn’t last. As for NFLers not being able to play basketball, that’s a ridiculous statement. I’d bet almost every WR, TE, QB and RB would do just fine. Not to mention, Brian Urlacher at the 4….fuhgetabaatit.
