Amar’e Stoudemire Not Interested in Knicks Signing Baron Davis

When the Cleveland Cavs cut Baron Davis loose, the New York Knicks seemed like a likely destination for the veteran (and injury-prone) point guard, but would-be-teammate Amar’e Stoudemire isn’t too interested in the potential signing. Per Newsday: “Amar’e Stoudemire was in no mood to make any recruiting pitches. If anything, the power forward has only one prerequisite of any player the Knicks add via free agency: Be in shape and ready to play. So despite mutual interest between guard Baron Davis and the front office, Stoudemire suggested that his preference would be to pass on the 32-year-old, who has a lower- back injury. ‘This guy’s out for eight to 10 weeks, he’s not our concern at all,’ Stoudemire said of Davis, who was waived by the Cavaliers on Wednesday. ‘We can’t do anything about his injury. Right now we can’t afford to have any setbacks. We have a positive thing going. We feel great about our guys. Everybody’s healthy, so we’ve just got to keep it going.’ Davis has until Friday night to clear waivers, and if a team does not put in a bid for him, the Knicks could attempt to sign him now. Or they could wait until he has recovered from the back injury, which his agent projected could take more than two months. With the $2.5-million ‘room exception’ now burning a hole in Glen Grunwald’s pocket after the Knicks lost out on yet another free agent — forward Shawne Williams opted to take more money from the Nets — the next notable free-agent target for the Knicks is veteran sharpshooter Michael Redd.”

    ALLEN – IVERSON !!

  • http://SportsCipher.com Jaamal Braithwaite

I think this statement proves all Stoudemire is worried about is winning.

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

I totally forgot Michael Redd existed.

  • Lew alcindor

michael redd would not be bad at all if he’s healthy. but who finds it ironic that STAT is talking down about somebody else being injured?

  • http://all-heat-erthing.tumblr.com/ cramzy

    Can A.I. get a look?!

  • Jono

Can Baron Davis just fu(k off already?

  • MikeC.

@Lew – I think STAT gets a pass on his injuries (not how they derail championship aspirations, but how they colour his character). Amare always works hard to come back and be ready to play. His knee injury was unfortunate, but he worked hard to rehab completely. His eye injury was just a freak accident that can happen to not only every NBA player, but every person who participates in team sports anywhere in the world. His back injury sure sucked, but that had more to do with him trying to do just about everything for NY last year. More help = less work = less injuries. Baron Davis isn’t exactly cut out of stone and isn’t known for his work ethic. He sounds like someone the Knicks don’t need.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Knicks can stick Baron on the end of their bench for vet min and wait until he heals. Low risk, high reward. I hope Travis Outlaw clears the amnesty waiver wire as well, and the Knicks can add him to their bench. Basically swap Shawne for Travis.

  • Stroshow

If the Clips amnesty Mo Williams that’d be a good fit.

  • Sonny

Sign a guy named Allen iverson!!!

  • anthony y

Lol..right@ lew alcindor. I get where he’s coming from, but really stat? They need a point before a two guard. Tony d is more of a two than a point. So is Allen iverson. Mike redd would be an interesting look though..if he’s FINALLY healthy.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

This Friday is the deadline for teams utilizing the amnesty provision for 2011-12 payroll. It will be interesting to see who gets the amnesty slapped on them at the last second.

  • Waggle

They should get Mo Williams!! Clippers have 4 pg’s now for christ sake!

  • http://nba.com GP23

    Allen Iverson.. Please !!!!

  • http://www.gil1906.com Pve_2

I think taking a shot on michael redd is worthwhile. We have no back court as it is so it couldn’t hurt. I don’t the clippers will amnesty waive Mo Williams because he has some trade value.

  • Team Jordan

Like I Said BEFORE and I’ll Say AGAIN… IF and WHEN B.D. Is HEALTHY… He’s A BEAST… Any TEAM Would Be STUPID Not To SIGN Him, Including The The KNICKS Cause If They DON’T, SOMEBODY Will… HOPEFULLY The HEAT Cause He’ll Fit That PUZZLE PERFECTLY!!!

  • MAS

How come Fields and Billy Walker are getting no LOVE? Douglas, Bibby, Rookie, Walker & Fields: Is that not good enough with a SOLID front court?

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Has everyone forgotten about Gilbert Arenas? I know he has more in the tank than AI. But if the Knicks were to pick him up, would we have to thug out the rest of his contract??

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Why are Knicks fans clamoring for AI? He would be just another cat that shoots first and doesn’t play D on the team.

  • Jay

Iverson would be a decent signing. His last stint in Philly he proved that he could play the “pass first” game. I heard he’s in great shape so at least give him a camp invite.

  • DieselMechanic

I hope the Iverson guys signs with Boston Celtics.

  • Ray Ray 9 Deuce

Listen, Michael Redd is just as injury prone as Baron, but maybe more so! Plus Redd SUCKS on Defense! Baron can play DEFENSE!!! BUT Baron being hurt is prolly related to him being fat and outta shape as always! He would need to lose a ton of weight, get into basketball shape, and completely heal within 2 months…..NOT GONA HAPPEN!!! I’ll pass…..However, if he can pull a rabbit outta his beard and somehow acomplish all that I listed, then he’d be a good acquisition…

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Just a quick question, is any team seriously considering Kris Kardashian?? Looks like Kim Kardashian straight Afflecked his carrer, J. Lo style…

  • Ray Ray 9 Deuce

Iverson could always play D! Check his stats! He led the league in steals 3 times, all while averaging over 30 ppg. That’s a beast!! He’s definitely Defensive minded. So the question is, how much does he have left in his 36 year old body???

  • Harlem_World

No disrespect to the man or his career, but we need NO parts of AI on this team. No defence and wrong type of offense for this team. If he were healthy, BD is worth the exception. Gil has fallen off quicker than last nights chick at 6am. Hope he still has something left in his legs, real talk

  • dsleepy

love STAT for this. and yes, it absoulutely proves he is only interested in winning.

and i’m sorry, but all you commenters asking for AI…i love AI’s game as much as next dude, but y’all must be thinking of AI from a decade ago, not the current form. iverson right now is an inconsistent, off-the-bench sparkplug, at best; he can score from time to time (8-10 a game, once in a while exploding for 20+), but wouldn’t be the guy you want as floor general/directing traffic for melo and amare. this is not a video game. point guard is a mindset, not just a skill set. and ai, while he has the skill set, does not (and most likely never will) have the mindset. sorry folks.

as for arenas: no. mistake. i am a huge arenas fan, but is not the right fit either. they already have 2 prolific scorers. what they need out of their pointguard is an unselfish leader, someone who sets the tone defensively on the perimeter.

  • Ray Ray 9 Deuce

Check this scenario: Knicks could’ve signed for offer sheet for DeAndre Jordan offering $50 mil instead of Chandler who has little to NO OFFENSE!! Really, is Melo and Amare gona score 100 per game?? (DeAndre is 23 years old. 7ft tall. Shot blocker. Rebounder. Best of all, young and offensive minded!) The clips would’ve passed at that price. Knicks save $8 Mil and use that to sign Crawford. Now we got a better team offensively and Defensively WITH A BENCH!!! The hell we sign Chandler for $58 Mil for??? smdh…..

  • CARTEL

A.I. is my favorite player EVER!!!…And I would like to see him play again in the league. It would even be cool to see him play for the Knicks. But after really thinking about it, the Knicks dnt need him…New Orleans could actually use his help…

  • http://nbasobrietystrike.blogspot.com/ CoolWhip

AI actually would have trouble putting up 8-10 a game these days. He hasn’t played in the NBA in two years, and he’s only gotten two years older in that time (not two years better).
A healthy/focused Baron is good on any team, but he’s obviously not healthy.
If you’re gonna take a shot, then Michael Redd is a solid one. Still light at the pointguard spot though.

  • bmorezbest

michael redd is a better option even if baron is healthy he is prone to get hurt again and not be there for the long haul they need a true point guard though not an always injured one

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

@ Ray Ray, I thought the same exact thing. Knicks could’ve signed DeAndre and had money left over to sign someone else now or next year. But I guess they wanted a brand name of sorts. Chandler ain’t no Howard, but he’s known for last years championship defense. But I definitely would’ve chosen DeAndre over Chandler. Guess the Knicks slept like they did last year on D-Will’s availability…

  • mavsfan

I wish the Dallas Mavericks would make a bid, that would be sick.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

    Somebody needs to sign A.I. !!! Boston,New York,Atlanta,L.A., Miami?

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

This may be it for Baron Davis.
Anyone whose watched him the entire time may share similar sentiment.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I agree with Orange, this is a low-risk high-reward opportunity. Baron Davis is perfect for a run-and-gun offense, and if he isn’t jacking sh!t up all the time, knows how to run a team. Here’s to a speedy recovery, Baron.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Co-sign Ray Ray Deuce completely… $58 Million for Tyson Chandler?! He had a good year in Dallas, but he isn’t going to do THAT much for the Knicks. Knicks don’t even have a point guard right now. They pretty much spent $58 Million for a good rebounder.

  • ClydeSays

I was just about to say Knicks should give him a look, before I thought about it. BD is rarely healthy & not exactly a chemistry guy. He only seems to be happy if he’s got a large role on the offense on a winning team. That seems like a bad fit for the Knicks who already have 2 guys who want/need the ball all the time.

  • In the Knick of Time

What about Rodney Stuckey? I wouldnt mind him he is young explosive…….Or how about Arron Afflalo defense beast and 3 pointers…some other possibilities..Mario Chalmers, Marco Belinelli, Nick Young, Carlos Arroyo

  • Sister

Knicks would be crazy not to sign Baron Davis if they can get him this cheap. Even if he misses half the season, he’d still make an awesome backup point guard. Come post-season, the Knicks will really appreciate the extra option there.

What’s more is, if Baron Davis actually gets healthy and plays well, he can take over starting point guard and let TD go back to his natural combo-guard role.

Sounds like a win-win for the Knicks.

  • bluezman9

Yo Stat is out of his mind and so is anyone else saying they don’t want Baron Davis runnin point in the garden…He can still ball and was a big part of Blake killn it last season….I got every game last year and watched mad clippers games and lemme tell you the guy can still ball and knows how to play point with the best of em as long as his back injury doesn’t kill him…And ALLEN IVERSON?!?!? Stop talking whoever said him…you clearly don’t know basketball

  • Bucketcity

Stat never said he isn’t interested in the Knicks signing Davis – He said his interest is not in Davis, who is on waivers and will be out for weeks, when the Knicks already have something going on. If Davis is ready and signs with the Knicks, Stat will welcome him with open arms, but his focus isn’t on a guy who isn’t even a Knick let alone healthy.

  • bluezman9

And Teddy I def agree we overpaid for Chandler but at the same time…big impact Centers like chandler who are unselfish and do the dirty work consistently are hard to come by and god knows we need defense with dantonis bumass runnin the show, so you cant really hate the move

  • rere

BD is a really good player who has NEVER been able to stay healthy. in fact, he`s hurt now and the season hasn`t even started. and although throwing alleyhoops (to griffin) may get you into the top 10 plays, it doesn`t equal regular season or playoff wins. more focus needs to be placed on the game than the highlights within the game because in all truth you`re not going to be throwing too many alley hoops deep in a playoff run.

with all that being said, BD is a good player and I hope he gets healthy soon.

however, the knicks need a healthy starting point guard who is capable of running the team – this should be the number #1 priority. and right now, BD is not healthy and quite frankly the knicks don`t have the money to spend on someone who can`t stay on the court and who has also had problems with fitness. In a couple months, if BD is healthy and in shape then he would be a nice fit as a reserve. but back injuries such as his and mcgrady`s are nothing to play around with, and there is no telling when davis will atually return. the knicks don`t need that type of uncertainty in a shortened season. it`s just not a sensible move.

thus far, the knicks have made an ok and an eyebrow-raising acquisition: paying too much for chandler who is a good defensive player (but also injury-prone) and then bibby??????????

with the present roster, I don`t think the knicks are not championship contenders but they still have time to add and subtract the right pieces.

options: stuckey is staying with detroit (i heard he already resigned – don`t think stuckey is a good option anyway), young wants $9 mil a year (obviously too much for the knicks and he`s not a point guard), I`m almost positive that chalmers is staying with miami (I think he has resigned with them – and I don`t think would want to leave miami for NY anyway), belinelli is staying with NO (and his name should NEVER be mentioned again), and arroyo should NOT be a serious option for the starting point guard.

get Agent Zero AND BD, call it a day, and win or gor home Knicks.

Chances are Baron Davis will only play about 15-20 games and then he will be out again for the season. B Diddy is a great talent, but when was the last time he had a season that didn’t end in injury. He played 44 games in 10-11, 73 in 09-10, 60 in 08-09, 62 in 06-07, 48 in 05-06….

You see the trend. They can’t be serious they are banking on waiting on an injury prone guy to save there season. Who makes these decisions. It’s like they just say anybody but Allen Iverson. Even in if he is healthy the best he has done is 14 pts 7 ass since 2007. That is decent, but not if you are the go to guy, that is not game changing!!!! I see what Stat is saying. They would be better off going with what they have vs. gambling on some one that has about a 25% chance of finishing the season.

There are only 3 or 4 teams that have the talent to win a Chip and are actually putting a true effort into pursuing the title. MIA, Dallas, OKC and San An, and San An is so old it is just a matter of time b4 injury kills there chance.
