Baron Davis: ‘I Think I Have a Lot Left. I Feel Young’

Baron Davis has a bad back and there’s no telling when he’ll finally be able to suit up for his new team, but fear not New York Knicks fans, your bearded point guard claims to have plenty of tread left on his basketball tires. From the Bergen Record: “The Cavaliers waived Davis last week through the amnesty provision. The 12-year veteran said he decided if he cleared waivers he wanted to play in New York. His arrival likely means Toney Douglas’ job as the starting point guard will be a temporary one. Davis has averaged 16.5 points and 7.3 assists in 806 NBA games with the Hornets, Warriors, Clippers and Cavaliers. D’Antoni hinted Davis would start once he’s healthy. ‘I think that will play out over the next month or so,’ D’Antoni said. ‘I see him being a vital part, that’s for sure. We are talking about one of the better point guards in the league. … You can guess as well as I can.’ D’Antoni said Douglas and current backup point guard Mike Bibby could play with Davis. D’Antoni likes having that flexibility and versatility. His system also is suited for Davis, a good pick-and-roll player Davis has been known to look for his shot first, but said he’s fine playing ‘the facilitator role’ and setting up Anthony and Stoudemire. The hardest part for Davis is not being able to play. ‘I think I have a lot left,’ Davis said. ‘I feel young. When I do hit that floor, I know it’ll be a special thing, and I’m going to play with my heart.’”

B-Diddy is in New York City! FEAR THE BEARD!

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

I used my 2nd last fantasy pick on Baron Davis. Get well soon! lol

  • BlackStar

I rock with the Lakers, but this is a great pick up for the Knicks. If he balls like he did with Golden State, the Knicks will be rather scary.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I don’t understand how anyone thinks he will be a solid contributor for the Knicks? He’s going to sit out 3 more weeks, and then jump into the swing of things, in Mike D’Antoni’s offense, with THIS schedule? Get out of here with that crazy sh*t

  • Darren

I think the Knicks are on the right track overall, but this will be seen as a bad move by the end of the season, and maybe before.

  • B

If he gets healthy the Knicks will be hell to deal with!!!!

  • 12ising Phoenix

3 weeks isn’t that much. It’s crazy not to think baron will be a contributer. Playing with 2 all stars will def elevate his game , since he wouldn’t be the focal point of the offense. & when he does come back, i don’t think they’ll thrust him into the starting lineup. Douglas will start, most likely underperform at point gaurd and the bearded hero will save the day in gotham. Sounds like bdiddy will make a cameo in the next Batman movie lol.

  • T-Money

i’d be surprised if he plays more than 40 games this year. he’ll get back and tweak something.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Baron Davis is far from finished. He’s only 32.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    So is Tracy McGrady

@nbk i’m still laughing at your jamba juice in cali comment with homie leaping the door with 3 dudes in the car. That has to be one of the funniest comments in slam history

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@nbk did you get your horn and put your big red nose on this morning? Seriously, what a clown you are for alluding Baron Davis is washed up. LMFAO! Keep the jokes coming! *honk honk*

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

only a Knicks fan thinks Baron Davis is going to come to town and be something he hasn’t been in 4 years. Did you see him last night? Homie is fat, and has a bulging disc in his back that will take a MINIMUM of 6 weeks to heal. Mike D’Antoni plays 7 players, which means everyone is playing an average of 34 minutes a game. For 66 games in 120 days. That’s 3.85 games a week. Have fun putting your hopes into Baron Davis adjusting too that. And I hope you finished your letter too santa, he’s comin too town. haven’t you heard?

  • robb

It’s not about how old Baron is, it’s about his physical form. He’s not finished but he’s close. Advice: Don’t expect much from this guy, you’ll be disappointed.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@robb I just expect Baron Davis to be the point guard I saw last season at MSG in his Cavs debut, but a little bit better playing with a much more talented team in a system that capitalizes on his strengths as a floor general. Bottom line, I’m extremely happy over Baron Davis’ decision to join the Knicks instead of the Lakers or Heat. Another thing I really like about this quality Knicks pickup, is Baron Davis signed for the veteran minimum, thus allowing the Knicks to retain their 2.5 million dollar room exception, which is going to help them land another piece for their team. The Knicks are clearly making all the right moves, but the bitter haters will be naysayers. A bunch of sour gr/apes! LOL!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    sorry for the double post.

  • Drunyce

^ I concur; the critics sound like morons.

  • http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hamilri01.html Allenp

Baron Davis would be good if he wasn’t Baron Davis. That’s really the only problem here.

  • anynomous

davis will be out 8-10 weeks not 3 weeks – 2 to 2 1/2 months in case anyone was wondering.

  • http://tinyurl.com/TheKnicksAreBack Blaze

Baron’s gonna be fine. Great actually. Its a great pick up for the Knicks, especially at the veteran minimum. It also allows TD to slide over to be the first guard off the bench and a scoring punch, which is what he’s best suited for. Lets go Knicks!!! http://tinyurl.com/ChandlerStatMelo

  • shutup

one of the lessons from the art of war states “never fight a man when he has no means of escape” Baron has no other options, i expect big things from him, in this liberated offense, he has good players around him and he will not have to carry the load himself (bibby/ Douglas). I just dont see him making up for the loss of Billups though.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@Drunyce, and I concur with your comment regarding these critics. The critique of the Baron Davis pickup by the Knicks is point and laugh funny.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@Blaze yup, B-Diddy is a low risk, and extremely high reward signing by the Knicks. And TD should be that sparkplug off the bench. The Knicks are going to have a lot of options with their backcourt rotations this season. A nice mix of vets and neophytes in their backcourt. ;)

    lol

nbk, you’re such a clown. *honk honk* LMAO!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

IAMORANGE4EVER you’re such an intelligent basketball mind (an comedian). What would we do without you?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

nbk, you have had an excellent “career” as a SLAM commenter thus far. I mean it when I say, all of us at SLAM (your slamily) are blessed to have you online here all day and every day sharing your words of wisdom. You blend your basketball knowledge with just the right amount of humor. I can’t even count on my two hands how many times you’ve given me a solid chuckle while perusing SLAMonline. Keep up the good “work” nbk, and remember, you are special! I don’t know where I’d be without your objectivity. SMH

thanks buttercup. Tha’s what I’m here for. To make myself feel better for arguing with people. I’m not wasting time or anything, i literally feel like I’m being productive! Thanks for noticing! Go Knicks!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

*honk honk* Here comes nbk feeling productive! lol

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

*honk honk* here comes Baron Davis. Seriously, get out of the way, and hide your food.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

It’s going to be FUN reading these asinine comments by nbk regarding Baron Davis later on this season. Will the clown admit he was wrong, or will the clown just continue honking his horn? We shall see!

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

The question is will you ever realize you’re wrong more often than Tyreke Evans goes right?

  • anynomous

history lesson: davis already played for an up-tempo offensive, non-defensive squad in the golden state warriors when don nelson was the coach. davis had very talented players around him then – dantoni-like players who could hit the long ball from anywhere on the court. this was almost 4 years ago. how is this knicks team different than that warriors team? the makeup of each team may be slightly different but style is the same therefore the result will be same as it was for golden state (under nelson), sacramento (under adelman), dallas (under nelson), and phoenix (under dantoni). good regular season. average postseason.

  • George

Knicks need to run the triangle offense the way there constructed because the point guard wouldnt matter ala Jordan and Kobe, their point guards only need to defend. The ball moves around and your superstars get into iso situation ala Jordan and Kobe on the wing. Melo would fit that role perfect along with Amare

  • BBaller

Sorry nbk, you are always reliable for a good post, but seriously that comment you made the other day about RJ in a car with 3 dudes puts you back to a stereotypical, homophobic clown. You need to redeem your self, that was a classic, like C.Webb calling timeout when there was no time outs left.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Like I said after I read Jukai’s response. I didn’t mean to offend anyone, just said that story cause it was hilarious. If you got offended as well I apologize.

  • Michael

I’m not a knicks fan do like their team though this season. seems odd as to why knicks would waste money on signing an injured player in a compressed season. tony douglas is inconsistant and will be a reserve bibby is 54 years old lol and is only a shooter. If anyone cared to do some research instead of just jumping on what the media say about him they would see that he was pretty special at the cavs with no one to pass to. the man is a pass first point guard always setting team mates up so tell me if his injury is a lie please tell me why he wouldnt be getting at least 12 assists per game passing to melo amare and chandler. seems odd that you would sign a 32 year old injured player and waste a roster spot unless the injury was made up so he got dumped by the cavs. makes sense

  • Triple Double

What story was the RJ and three dudes comment in? I wanna read that.

George… The triangle offence call is interesting… What do y’all think of that idea?
