Bulls, Derrick Rose Finalizing 5-Year, $94 Million Extension

Derrick Rose is going to be a Chicago Bull for a very long time — the team will make sure of that — but just don’t expect him to start recruiting stars to join him in the Windy City. From the Chicago Tribune: “He didn’t woo LeBron James, court Dwyane Wade or disparage Keith Bogans. You also won’t hear Derrick Rose clamor for Dwight Howard, who knocked Rose out of two games two seasons ago. The reigning most valuable player’s attitude always has been: Join the Bulls if you want. If not, we’ll try to beat you. ‘It’s just me, man,’ Rose said. ‘If it’s not coming from the front office, you’re not going to hear me saying anything about recruiting anyone. The city speaks for itself, especially for basketball. If you want to come here, opportunity is here. The front office is great. Our fans are the best ‘I wouldn’t trade my teammates for anything in the world. Our front office does a great job picking guys with the right attitude. They just want to win.’ Rose will win on the bottom line soon. General manager Gar Forman said the formality of Rose’s five-year, $94 million extension is being finalized with Rose’s agents, Arn Tellem and B.J. Armstrong. ‘Derrick is the centerpiece of what we’re putting together here,’ Forman said. ‘We want Derrick to be a Bull for a long, long time. It’s very important that we put the right pieces around Derrick.’”

    Rose is a LEGIT superstar.
I’m not an expert in player contracts. But, isn’t a little too much too soon money for him? (I’m lazy, care to explain details?) That could affect their flexibility to acquire key players in the near future especially since they aren’t far to a title anymore. Aren’t they gonna re-up Joakim? Is Boozer gonna be waived next year? 2 years?

Well deserved, DRose is the man, both on and of the court.

  • dabigfundamental

If I am not mistaken that is as much money approx as was receiving Jordan for his last 2 seasons (20/year) with the bulls. I thought there was a long lockout recently because of those crazy salaries… not taking anything from the amazing skills of Rose, is that reasonable ?

  • Playa

to the dabigfundamental: Jordan’s last 2 seasons with bulls he got about 30 and 33 mil/per season(and was ready for the raise to 36mil in case he didnt retire in ’99),so its not exactly the same money Derrick just got.Besides Rose is Da men, they(bulls)should stick to him for the rest of his bball career.

this dude makin 18.8 mill per season, WOW.
i dono, if he wants the right pieces around him, he would try and save some cap space? but we will see, not too sure how tht works. i can tell the bulls cnt be with out drose. and drose knows his value.
he played his cards right and now hes everywher, jus look to your right, drose 2 adidas banner, this dude has it goin. i hope JR swish signs with them. thts gna be FIREEEE.

we shouldn’t make too much of people re-upping on their rookie deals. EVERYBODY re-ups on their rookie deals. bron, melo, dwight, cp3, wade, stat, kd, etc. the real test is the 3rd contract… that’s when people explore the market.

  • LA Huey

Unless their making over $20/yr, a superstar in a market like Chicago shouldn’t have to take a pay cut to assist the GM. The owner should be willing to pay the luxury tax. And any GM worth his ish would take a superstar being on his roster and deal with “the burden” of less cap flexibility.

Everybody knew this was coming, Drose loves Chicago, Chicago loves Drose, business or not, he’s going to be here for a long long time. :D

  • deezndhaus aka giogolo

19M/year with rose game and attitude is just about right..but no furthermore. this is he’s rate till he retires..as a bull. they need to spend on a scoring big man and a shooting, def wing.

I kind of see Rose’s point about recruiting players. I don’t think many people think this way, but when you’re clamoring for guys to come to your team, you’re making a backhanded comment about the adequacy of your current. Fine, they may not be the most skilled, but you gotta go out and play with them and keep their confidence up for some time before any significant roster change might happen. Don’t make (be seen making) any gesture that’ll offend your teammates, and let management do what’s necessary for the team.

years and years from now they want to see #1 hanging on the top of the arena… i know i would want to too!

    Co-sign LA HUEY

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Co-sign T-Money.
Everybody takes the guaranteed big money on the rookie extension.
Is there first “big” deal, and they can’t get the same amount of money or job security from anywhere else.
The next deal will be the test because he should be set financially, and if they haven’t won a ring yet fans will be calling him a bust. That’s the way it works.

Some of y’all apparently haven’t heard of the new “Derrick Rose rule” in the CBA, otherwise you woulda known Rose was about to be hella paid.
On another note, I know Rose gets a lot of props for not recruiting free agents and for being loyal to his teammates, but I personally wish he’d reach out more to guys like Dwight Howard or Dwyane Wade.
I mean, this isn’t Simeon or Memphis anymore, this is the NBA, and the teammates you have now will NOT be the same guys you play with your entire career, may as well tell Joakim “you’re my dude and all, but I wanna play with Dwight!”
I mean, Michael Jordan wasn’t happy his guy Charles Oakley got traded from the Bulls, but that seemed to work out ok.

My boy deserves this. Humble and honest. Just an amazing and unselfish player.

  • yea

I’m starting to like this guy more and more. Rose and Durant are truly the future of the League.

I agree. It seems like the Rose/Durant generation of players are more old school and have more of a competitive edge and more loyalty than the LeBron/Carmelo/Paul generation. They have more pride about competing against the best in the league…………and beating them. The NBA will be back to what it was in the 90s……….just have to wait until the LeBron generation is weeded out.

  • blackthought

worth every penny, but is this realy the same jerry reinesdorf, who once said that he maid regret the 30 mill. extension he signed with money back in 1997? I love this move – go bulls!
