Chris Bosh: ‘I Want to Be the Best Player in the NBA’

Chris Bosh is this month’s subject in the always-amusing “What I’ve Learned” feature in Esquire, and the Miami Heat forward drops some pretty fantastic (mostly hilarous) quotes: “Spending is the easiest thing in life. You give me $100 million and I can spend it in twenty-four hours. You think I’m playing? I’m not playing. People can’t fathom it. But going broke is the easiest thing ever. Money requires a lot of attention … You might want to cut off some shorts and wear them with some boots and a cool shirt. That’s fashion, because it’s what you want to do. People can laugh at it, but you have to be like, ‘This is cool. I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ Next thing you know, people will be saying, That is kind of cool, man … It’s not hard to imitate a used-car salesman if you grow up watching television in Dallas … I still have the element of surprise. They don’t expect me to do what I’m going to do next year … I want to be the best player in the NBA. Maybe not this year or the year after next, but one day…’”

better than Love and Griffin? unless someone who makes informed comments on here says it I’m not giving it another thought.

    @BRAVO
Do you really think people will take you serious when writing like that?
Bosh IS pretty damn good, and debating who he’s better or worse than is tough as hell if even possible. But one thing is for sure, when teaming up with two of the 5 best players in the league of course your numbers gonna drop and your spotlight fade. I don’t believe that some of you guys are as dumb as you sound, but I do believe that you should learn to think before you write. For everyone’s sake.

  • the truth

he was kidding…no one else got that?

man, y’all are sleeping on bosh.
Dude was averaging like 24 and 12 in toronto his last year. He put up 18 and 8 for miami with an extreme decrease in shots.
He plays very good defense on his man, excellent help defender, can put the ball on the deck, shoot the jumper and finishes well.
Love is nice, but his offensive game is limited to shooting jumpers at this point and he is a very bad defender.
Blake’s raw talent is off the charts, but his defense is still suspect and his game could use some refinement.
I say Dirk is clearly better. Gasol might be better. Amare and Blake are probably on the same level depending on what you like in a player. That is top five right there.

I want a 69 Roadrunner for CHRISTmas too.

I’d like to propose that we use “crazier than cutting off some shorts and wearing them with some Boots” as the go-to comeback for anything stupid on this site. Example:
    -Raptors will make the playoffs!
-That’s crazier than cutting off some shorts and wearing them with some boots.
    Or
-Kobe is still the best in the league.
-That’s crazier than cutting off some shorts and wearing them with some boots.

    Caboose is dumb

@ Samco: Where does Santa Claus factor into the whole “Christ”-mas thing again? Please remind me. I seem to have misread the bible.

Id still take Duncan over bosh, even at “this stage” of his career, i think hes matching Bosh’s 18-8 last year with his diminished role. I think Aldridge is better than Bosh and has way more potential at the pf position.

  • MUBWAR

LA can’t rebound mr shutup. bosh meanwhile pulls downs almost 9 rebounds a game while fighting for the ball against guys like james(7.5rpg) wade(6.4rpg)and haslem(8.2rpg)

Chris Bosh is mentally ill, there is no other word to describe him. He’s the reason Heat lose games, there’s retard thinks he’s a star and takes shots that he shouldn’t and turns the ball over in critical situations, just imagine how could the Heat would be if they had Amare, they would be unstoppable. Chris Bosh is an outcast and there is no big 3 its the big 2 as far as I’m concerned.

  • B.C.

@ MUBWAR, are you serious Bosh better then Amare? Are you stupid? I think so.

  • Allenp

Amare doesn’t rebound defend or pass. Has nobody noticed this? He.is a.beast on the.pick and.roll but come on.
And if people don’t.want to say christmas that is their business but don’t expect.me to.say Happy Holidays.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I would take Bosh over every 4 in the league but Dirk, Pau, and LA for right now. Blake Griffin and Kevin Love long term though. Amar’e is really good at putting the ball in the hoop, has all the potential in the world, and he has great hands, but his effort and awareness in the non scoring related aspects of his game are pathetic. So pathetic that he is not really an “A” player as much as a “B+” – Bosh gives you a similar level of offensive production, with a greater ability EVERYWHERE else. Bosh plays within an offensive system better. Assuming not every play will be ran for the power forward. he defends both one on one in the post, and out too as far as the perimeter better. Bosh also protects the rim better than Amar’e, he doesn’t do it by blocking as many shots, but he rotates WAY more efficiently, he is willing to take charges more than once a month or seven. Needless to say at this point Bosh is better than Amare. Stats with the Heat and all.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

I think chris is the 3rd best PF in the league behind dirk and gasol

  • http://entelleckt.com Mike Wyatt | @entelleckt

@Teddy-the-Bear On that note, where do you see Christmas in December in the Bible?

Nothing wrong with Bosh wanting to be the best player in the NBA

  • http://entelleckt.com Mike Wyatt | @entelleckt

    nbk and megatron are right

  • shutup

@mubwar LA averaged 7.5 rebounds a game in his career. Bosh only avg 9, thats not that big of a difference. LA is a better shooter and i think overall player and better suited for the pf position than bosh. How come everybody sleeps on Duncan? The best pf ever, sure he’s on his way out of the league i give it 3 years max, but he is still very effective and productive despite scaling back his game.

  • BBaller

Word @Shutup, if you were to ask Lebron if they could hypothectically swap Bosh for TD or KG for just this season i’m sure he’d say hell yes.Bosh is just not the right fit for Miami, why they chose an offensive PF is beyond me.A k.Love or L.A would give Lebron the ring he so desires.Bosh is great just like Z-Bo but not in the Miami’s structure.

  • http://www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=pawtucketymca Gametimeweezy

NBK – On paper Bosh is a great player numbers wise but in reality he’s soft and has no individual or team accolades to speak of. He’s no better than 4th best in an albeit strong draft class and Shaq calls him Rupaul which is hilarious because it’s true.. I’m sorry but Bosh does not protect the rim at all opposed to any dominant shot blocker in the history of the league. Compared to Amare, yes he blocks more shots, but so does Dwyane Wade. His numbers are going down this year he won’t be able to guard Amare or score on Chandler. Bosh gets a solid B+ but to say he’s the 3rd best PF in the league is a major insult to Amare, Kevin Love, Zach Randolph, Al Jefferson, Blake Griffin and LaMarcus Aldridge. Now I’m not saying they are better than Bosh but all are ranked higher in most fantasy player rankings. And I understand fantasy rankings are trivial but you had mentioned offensive production. Bosh cannot be a better player than Amare under no stretch of the imagination because his defense does not out way Amare’s offensive production as Amare has actually averaged MORE blocks per game since he came into the league (as well as points). The only reason I’m saying this is there is no way Bosh is better then Amare.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

You didn’t read what I said. You didn’t understand what I said. And frankly, it’s not worth repeating.

  • BBaller

nbk you are being too big for your boots, calm it down a little. You sound like Eboy lately, too much arrogance and not enough humility.

  • BBaller

And there is still the worst post ever” RJ jumped out of a car with 3 guys so he is obviously gay.Usually you have good points but after that….sorry you are a douche bag, just a 21 year old i guess.

  • BBaller

@nbk Bosh has no defense, when players see him defending the rim they just drive harder because they know he will avoid being a poster.

  • ab40

If thing go bad this season again, Bosh is going to be the odd man out. And I hope LeBron plays more minutes at the four. And get’s abused in the post by bigger players. Now that’s going to make him cringe and lose his confidence. Because of the injureies. Hell even if they had everybody healthy even this supporting cast is medicore at best.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Saying someone didn’t read our understand what I said is not being arrogant. It’s true. If you read both comments it’s obvious. And I already explained that RJ situation where it was, and you clearly don’t know what I said either. move on. Stop thinking your opinion of me makes a difference, it’s just as ignorant as the sh*t you say.

  • Justin G.

Wow, not even sure where to begin. I guess first of all it’s ridiculous saying Bosh couldn’t carry a team to the playoffs. Well yes, he actually did. And in the times before and after that no power forward in the history of the league could have gotten those Raptors teams too much further, let alone be a contender. So many people forget just what a beast Bosh was at both ends of the floor every night in his final year with the Raptors before taking that elbow and breaking a bone in his face. Amare just might be one of the most overrated players in the league now. He has no heart and is not the player Bosh is. Their career stats are very similar too btw. Stoudemire has averaged 21.9 ppgand 8.8 rbg. Bosh is 20 and 9.2. Not exactly huge gaps there, especially in rebounding where Bosh is appaerntly so soft.
Why is Kevin Love getting so much mention anyway? Because he leaves his man at all times to get himself in position for a rebound? He’s not even in the conversation right now. Dirk and Pau are the only two players that are better at this stage and the fact that they are 7 footers really helps their cause as well although obviously it isn’t the only reason they are better.
@Gametimeweezy…Nobody protects the paint like the most dominant shot blockers of all time because…well…they were the most dominant shot blockers of all time. It’s kind of a stupid statement to make.

  • shutup

KG and TD I feel are both better players right now, if were gonna include intangibles in this conversation. Both anchor their teams with leadership something i dont see in bosh or amare. I just feel Aldridge is a better player than Bosh, better post game better jumpshot and more physical. The reason Amare has the hype because he attacks the rim, people are going to notice when you play more aggressive. Honestly before Bosh ended up on the heat I wasnt much of a fan, and watching him in the playoffs made sure my opinion didnt change, bad decision making and fumbled passes at crunch time sealed it for me. as for playoff averages might tell a different story between amare and bosh, amares avg’s go up and boshs goes down. Amare 23.5/9.1 per playoff game and bosh 19.2/8.7 so thats why people as well as i see amare as the better player.

  • BBaller

Clap , Clap with the strong argument back nbk.He said she said, be more incisive next time.My opinion of you doesn’t make a difference, although once upon a time you made decent comments.@ Shutup nice acknowledgement of TD and KG.

    Meh.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

This is the worst discussion ever…did a Jr. High debate team all sign up as commentors for this one? 1st of all, KLove doesn’t belong in the conversation, he literally plays no defense at all. I poke fun at him sometimes, but seriously, Bosh is a top 3 – 4 PF in the league, period. Anyone who says differently didn’t watch him in Toronto. I’m pretty sure that any player in the league would take a statistical hit if they were playing along side the best SF and the best SG in the world. Dirk, Pau, and maybe LA are the only PFs better than him right now.

  • Justin G.

You don’t think Bosh anchored the Raptors with leadership? Really? I’m not sure berating your players in front of the world like KG does is exactly what I’d call leadership either. It doesn’t matter. We’re talking about who’s the better player here. Mark Messier might have been the leader of the Edmonton Oilers but Wayne Gretzky was the better player. Same thing here. KG and TD, as players, are not as good as Chris Bosh. As for how Bosh played in his first competitive playoffs, I don’t think it fully tells the tale. He had a tough final but he also had a great ECF as well, probably their best player.
Some may remember that Magic Johnson cost his team a game or two when he turned the ball over with bad passes and letting the shot clock go down in a key situation late in the game too (the year escapes me but it was one of the Finals against Boston). It happens. It doesn’t define you as a player though

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

First…. Bosh would own everybody on this comment section. Second whats wrong with someone wanting to be the best? Its a good dream, i remember he said he wanted to be MVP and he had one of his best years. Stop hating ppl, but you are entitled to your own opinion. :)

  • shutup

No I dont think Bosh anchored them with leadership when i watched toronto it was a team in disarray. KG is a leader a vocal one who calls people out and makes them responsible for their actions. Tim Duncan right now is a better player than Chris Bosh, night in and night out I’d give up the 3-4 ppg difference for TD’s intangibles, smart passing the ability to outhink opponents and the ability to control the flow of offense from the post. as for gretzky and messier, messier ended up being the best player on the rangers when they won a championship, so i dont understand your analogy. and the reason magic isnt defined by his mistakes is because success defines a person. put yourself in the seat of any gm with the ability to sign kg,td or chris bosh for this upcoming year and i cant imagine anyone saying give me bosh, i just cant.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

KG didn’t start winning until he played with Pierce and Allen, and to a lesser extent Cassel and Spreewell in Minny. You can’t blame Bosh for not winning a title on those horrible Toronto squads, he played out of his mind up there, he just didn’t have alot of help.

  • marc

This is a real question yal truly thing BG is better then Bosh? I think Bosh’s post game is better then BG. Blake is going to be better then him though without a doubt. The only reason I can see Blake having a great season is because he’s playing with CP3 and a main option. As bosh is a third option.

  • shutup

kg in minn was better than bosh in toronto. and KG won the first year with allen and pierce, bosh should aspire to be like KG. I just think guys overlook them because their used to seeing them at the top of the list year in and year out. The spurs were second in the nba in wins last year, and the early exit could be attributed to TD rolling his ankle a week before the playoffs. I just dont understand the arguement that leadership and experience and proven winning doesnt count when people say one person is better than the next. who would you want to go to war with? I rather have someone like KG with his fire or TD with his steady hand that has proven that he can make the big shot and carry a team to the ultimate success.

  • shutup

I think that any team in the L would rather have BG than bosh. BG’s upside is so much greater, he rebounds better than bosh and scores more. as a rookie blakes numbers are 22.5 ppg 12.1 rpg and 3.6 apg. Boshs best season to date is 24, 10.8 , and 2.4. I think Blake is only going to get better, and now playing with Paul his numbers are gonna be crazy.

  • Bravo

    Ppl b crazy just watch

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

BG will most likely be better than Bosh, but he’s not yet…stats aren’t everything. Also, I seriously think KG’s leadership (screaming/berating) is vastly overrated. Great player, great defender, but prior to coming to Boston was known to disappear under pressure. His “fire” is something that most players including some of his teammates hate. I’d argue that Paul Pierce and Rondo were the real leaders of that Celts team.

  • meloman2.0

When he was on the Raptors he was definetely a top 3 pf… now, not so much

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ meloman – is he really a worse player now? I’d say playing with the 2 best players in the world might have something to do with his statistical dip…

  • shutup

@meloman you go back 2 years then he barely makes the top 5 kg,td,Gasol, Aldridge, Dirk not in that order. Aldridge /bosh spot for 5 or six

  • shutup

oh Amare would be in the top 5 so 6/7 for LA +CB

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

C’mon now, Amare isn’t better than Bosh, be for real here. At least CB tries to play defense. Also, LA was only putting up 18 and 7 with 1.5 ast and 1 block 2 years ago, Bosh was putting up 23 and 10 with 2.5 ast and a block 2 years ago, nice try though.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Also, niether of those cats have ever averaged a double double. Bosh has 3 double double seasons.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Nobody is arguing that Bosh is better than prime KG either shutup, I was saying his “leadership” is very overrated. It took 2 superstars and an up and coming PG to get him a ring.
