Doc Rivers Wants Rajon Rondo to Take More Shots

In many ways, the Boston Celtics will only go as far as Rajon Rondo can taken them in 2012, and according to head coach Doc Rivers, that means the point guard has to shoot the ball more. From WEEI: “While Jermaine O’Neal was off getting his in-game massage, Doc Rivers was making the following observation about Rajon Rondo: the Celtics need him to shoot and score if they are going anywhere this season. Rondo certainly didn’t disappoint in his preseason finale, making the first two jumpers he attempted on his way to 6-of-10 shooting and a team-high 17 points as the Celtics beat the Raptors, 81-73, Wednesday night. Rondo started off strong from the floor, something Rivers is looking for this season. ‘Yeah, yeah, we want him to just shoot it; I don’t care how many times he shoots,’ Rivers said. ‘What I did like more than his jump shot was that he got to the foul line, I think six times in the first half. That’s – we need that.’ Speaking of scoring, something the Celtics are going to need lots of if Paul Pierce is sidelined with a heel problem, Kevin Garnett posted up several times in the first quarter as well as spotting up high in the Celtics offense and passing to an open teammate down in the paint.”

he is a pass first pure point guard, i think its against his nature to think about looking for his shot and not setting his teammates up. I dont understand why that is looked down upon.

    Has Doc seen him shoot?

So do all of the Boston opponents.

The question “Why?” comes to mind

Doc wants him to shoot more so that opponents will be forced to guard him. you can be pass-first, but if all you do every time you drive to the basket is pass, then nobody will guard you, and you might as well be playing four on five on offense.

I want him to take more shots too… maybe cuz i hate the Green! Rondo will never be a consistent shooter! Not with that Form.. his elbow is sticking out to the right. SMH

Dude isn’t gonna get better or gain any confidence if he doesn’t take more shots. I’m okay with this.

I bet Russ Westbrook is green with envy right now

Rajon needs to work on his shooting in practice more, or wherever. That, and free throws. A pro baller should be able to knock down free throws.

@Seth; tell that to Shaq and Dwight. It’s a mental thing more than anything for these guys who “can’t shoot”. Rajon matched KD on 3 pointers in HORSE a couple years ago when there was no pressure, it’s just a matter of developing confidence in his shot. This is the right decision by Rivers, and I think he’s protecting Rondo from criticism by saying this publicly.

funny celtics have pierce, allen,kg even doc who can shoot the ball.why dont rondo take a lesson from them?p.s stop hatin obama

Rondo can shoot, he just doesn’t seem to like to.

  • ClydeSays

He’ll never be a confident shooter unless he actually shoots the ball 10-15 times a game.

nbk you know I’ll be keeping the shot chart for all those 10-22 footers! Given the situation with the roster and schedule it’s really the C’s only choice. Hope last year was off one for whatever reasons and let the kid expand his game. Also when 2/3 of the new3 are sitting out the 4th game in 5 nights or the 3rd of 3 in a row somebody’s gonna have to hoist em’ up…

its about getting confidence in his shots… thats what he (Doc) is trying to say, so if your sombody who says “are you kidding me? have you seen him shoot?” yes it is iffy at this point but why not have a point gaurd that CAN pass the ball that CAN play solid D that CAN shoot for a cherry on top?

If you know basketball and the Truth still effective but not who they use to be Rondo’s ability to get to the rim combined with consistent shooting will lead to more uncontested shots for KG & Paul….just sayn
