Hornets to Make Decision on Chris Paul By Friday?

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

The bad news is that Chris Paul is involved in so many trade scenarios, it’s enough to cause a migraine for anyone trying to sort through the rumors.

The good news is that maybe, just maybe, this won’t be dragging on for too much longer.

According to Yahoo! Sports‘ sources, the New Orleans Hornets are expected to make a decision on their franchise superstar by the end of this week. What that means, of course, is anyone’s guess.

Here are some of the team’s options so far, as the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, Orlando Magic Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks and LA Lakers are all in the hunt for CP3′s services :

  • The Clippers’ opening salvo was an offer that included restricted free agent DeAndre Jordan and Minnesota’s unprotected first-round pick, with L.A. hoping that the prospect of playing with electrifying forward Blake Griffin and the big stage of Los Angeles would be enticing enough to Paul that he would eventually commit to the team long term. Eric Gordon is not in the deal “at this time,” a source said, though it is understood that any deal that would include a commitment from Paul would have to include the sharpshooting guard.”
  • There are several legitimate suitors angling to make a play for all-star guard Chris Paul, according to reports by ESPN and Yahoo! Sports , but the Knicks, with very little in assets to offer, are not among the group. So here we are again in a situation where it seems a third of the league has the interest and ability to trade for a star, but only one team — as the Yahoo! report confirmed, the Knicks — is his preferred destination.”
  • “It appears that New Orleans point guard Chris Paul is going to be traded in the near future, and the Celtics have continued their conversations with the Hornets regarding Rajon Rondo, according to two NBA sources. Although Celtics president Danny Ainge said he had no plans to move Rondo for Paul, the club has continued looking for a way to pry the perennial All-Star out of New Orleans. The Celtics appear open to discussing a trade for Rondo, although a Hornets source said Boston was not ‘shopping’ him.”
  • “Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry and Los Angeles Clippers guard Eric Gordon are the two players New Orleans has pursued the hardest in the Hornets’ fast-moving search for a workable Chris Paul trade, according to sources close to the talks. But the Hornets continue to meet with resistance from the Warriors and the Clippers on Curry and Gordon, because both teams are reluctant to part with their young backcourt cornerstones with no assurance from Paul that he will stay beyond this season. Sources said that the Hornets have actually been trying to convince the Warriors to part with Curry since before last season’s trade deadline in February. But the Warriors could only stomach the inclusion of Curry if they knew Paul would extend his contract as part of the trade or at least commit to invoking his option for the 2012-13 season. Golden State has still received no such promises.”

  • To add to the fun, the Hornets are currently owned by the NBA and desperately searching for a buyer, while the team’s meal ticket on the court looks to bolt prior to becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Yeah, good luck with all of that.

If they trade Chris to any other team apart from New York Knicks or the LA Lakers, then I will know for certain that the league is rigged. The small teams are trying to stop the big players from going to big teams and that is a bad scam, a rip-off, a rig session. I am one of the big financial traders here in New York and I choose what hedge fund I trade for in any given year, we sign a contract and I go on to execute trades for big returns. If I, as a 9-5 top guy get this, why shouldn’t a NBA player (an entertainer) be allowed to go where he want s to work????

      Paul to Orlando!!!!!

    • http://slamonline.com Allenp

      Orange.
The Lakers have problems. That’s why they are trying to sign Dwight and hope that he’s enough with Kobe to keep them atop the conference. They are WAY over the salary cap and luxury cap right now and have to find a way to get under before they become “tax repeaters” and pay the really crazy luxury tax penalties.
But, they have enough assets to convince the Hornet or Magic to make a trade right now, which the Knicks don’t have. And once you make a trade, you can resign your own players even if you go over the salary cap as long as you’re willing to pay the luxury tax. And you can offer those players max deals.
The Knicks can’t offer a max deal, and won’t be able to sign free agents. That might be a problem. But I can see this conversation is making you angry, so I’ll leave it alone.

If I’m the Lakers I stay away from Paul and focus on Howard. I don’t trust his health. I would also take the risk of accepting Arenasbin a deal too. I think he could rejuvenate his career playing next to Kobe.

    • http://Slamonline.com Kap

No way I trade Curry for Paul. Curry has chance to be a top 3 pg in next few years

    • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I don’t know how in the hell we could have D-How, Kobe and Arenas on contract while still having any other talent at all on the team. That would certainly mean having no Odom, Metta, Pau or Bynum…. Yikes, I don’t know about that. Although I do like Arenas allot and if he ever can get back to half form then he will be a force again.

      Why isn’t Gilbert amnestied already???

    • http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine nbk

      Because they still have Turkoglu

    • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

Cost of living is higher in NY of course they are gonna take the money. Signing Amare and Melo was a fail, NBK and Allenp? Are youkidding me??? It’s a revival and haters need to accept this is just the start. Chris Paul WILL don a Knicks uniform, if not this year, then next year for sure.

    • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

I heard the Warriors and another(I’m forgetting the team) are pursuing Paul, and that Steph Curry might be part of a potential deal.

    • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

That stupid reasoning imo Gametime. You gotta take less if your serious about winning. NY might be more expensive overall, but only if you choose for it to be. I don’t know how NY will make it happen, but I also think he will be in NY with in 365 days.

    • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Warriors, Clippers and Celtics along with LA BlackPhantom.

    • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

      LA meaning Lakers*

    • http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine nbk

oh yeah because you say so Gametime, not because Logic does, but because you do. The Knicks were in fine shape if they didn’t make the Melo trade and extension in the fashion they did. Amar’e wasn’t a “mistake” as much as it was jumping the gun, and probably overpaying, which was a clear sign of things to come (look at the Melo issue) . They have no prospects other than Iman Shumpert who isn’t a very good prospect to be honest (seriously, he can jump high and is a freak athlete, but is he going to be able to defend at the NBA level and will he be able to actually fit in with the offensive scheme in New York to the point of being an effective playoff starter? Serious concerns from a guy who didn’t even make Georgia Tech better). Landry Fields is expiring and has to be paid. IF you want Chris, you lose Landry. No way around that. So you will have, at the very most, and Chris would have to take a contract STARTING around $11M a SEASON, Melo, Stoudemire, Chris Paul, Toney Douglas & Renaldo Balkman on your roster. ANd you will not be able to afford anything but minimum salary guys after that. Good luck win anything at all.

    • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I didn’t say signing Amare and Melo was a fail.
I said giving up all those assets and signing both of them to max deals that made it much more difficult to sign other pieces is a problem.
They gutted their team for Melo so that he could get a max deal on par with Amare’s when they could have stayed firm and said “We can’t afford to do that and build the team you deserve.”
If they had said that, they would have still likely gotten him in free agency.
Amare’s deal was cool, but they still are paying him significantly more than the Heat had to pay Chris Bosh, and for my money Bosh is the superior player.
This year the Heat will spend $47.5 million on LeBron, Wade and Bosh. The Knicks will spend $36.7 million on Melo and Amare, plus $14 million on Chauncey. When Chauncey comes off the books, they will be spending $40 million on Melo and Amare, while the Heat are spending $52 million on their Big Three.
That wasn’t the best use of funds. If New York fans are trying to cell CP3 on taking less money because of the endorsements, why didn’t Melo and Amare do the same thing?

i am orange is the most ignorant comentor on this site… thank god I’m a Melo/ Knicks fan and i don’t have to argue with him

    • http://www.t-mac.com/tmac/index unf*ckwitable

I hope he goes to the lakerrs

    • ClydeSays

Doesn’t the NBA own the Hornets right now? Seems like a conflict of interest that they’d trade away their franchise player….

That said, if the Clips can make a trade and keep Griffin & Gordon, that would be a good core. A small core, but a good one…

I can’t see how Ainge gets Paul. He’s have to trade Rondo, plus players & picks. He’s over the cap and needs to fill out half his roster. Seems like a pipe dream….

    • http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine nbk

The NBA isn’t involved in personnel decisions. They told Dell Demps to run the team as he would for the previous owner and make the same decisions. Except the league is pushing for the Chris Paul trade sooner rather than later so they can get to selling the team.

    • IAMORANGE4EVER

The commenter at 4:49 calling me ignorant shows he’s likely retarded. That fool said “thank god I’m a Melo/ Knicks fan and i don’t have to argue with him” LMAO! As if I’m not a fan of both the Knicks and Carmelo Anthony. SMH. I will forever love Carmelo Anthony for what he has done (and continues to do) for the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball program. Bottom line, SHUT YOUR MOUTH DOUCHEBAG and use your head for something besides a hat rack.

    • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I like the Clippers deal the best, although it would be a lot better with Eric Gordon involved. But I can see why the Clips are refusing to include him.
That would be an undersized by very, VERY potent backcourt. With Blake eating at the trough.
Hell, if the Cavs amnesty Baron Davis, they might be able to convince him to come back to L.A. to back up CP3. Yeah, that might not work.
Bill Simmons thinks the Warriors will get Paul.
People are a LOT higher on Steph Curry than me. If I was going to basically trade Paul straight up for a young guard not named Derrick Rose, it would be Russell Westbrook.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

NBK – It is by what I say because I am a Knicks fan and I do like the team as it is constructed now, with Melo and Stat, than I did previously (for years). I understand your LOGIC doesn’t agree much past the finances of fielding such a team, but thats okay, thats YOUR opinion on whats logical or not. My LOGIC, as a fan, is excited no matter what because I DO like the roster from top to bottom and I feel we will be VERY competitive. We’re talking about the Knicks here we’ve sucked and have had salary cap restraints for years. This is becoming an old story. Melo, Stat, and possibly CP3 is a welcome change.

Allenp – I hear you I wish we didn’t give up so much for Melo.

    • IAMORANGE4EVER

The 2.0 must be his IQ. He makes the commenter using the pseudonym, RunNGun look like a genius. “Make it happen” lol

    • http://slamonline.com nbk

He’s saying his view of the Knicks is more realistic then yours, and arguing with you about how good/great they are in reality, compared to your opinion won’t change anything for him. It’s like a guys friend arguing with his daughter about how strong he really is, it’s pointless, the kid is never going to understand what people that weren’t at one point attached to his d*ck already know.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

Money money money, can we talk about basketball? Let the front office worry about salary cap and such, I just want a competitive team. Make it happen!

    • Scott

Bill Simmons has Paul going to Golden State for Curry, Udoh and Thompson. For whatever that is worth.

    • http://slamonline.com nbk

My logic is based in reality. And has nothing to do with an allegiance to anything. Your OPINION is not based in reality, but in your allegiance to the knicks, and finally seeing them win a playoff game. Cuz that hasn’t happened in a decade. I understand you Knicks fans are happy, but if your expecting Chris Paul, or a championship, you’re only going to be left disappointed.

    • IAMORANGE4EVER

Either way, the Knicks are in great hands with Smooth as their floor general this season, and if CP3 wants the Knicks, he’ll have to wait until free agency 2012. I’m looking forward to seeing what rookie Iman Shumpert can do as well.

    • http://slamonline.com datkid

      wow…

    • http://slamonline.com nbk

The best thing the Knicks can do this season is sign grant hill and hope everyone can stay healthy. (Billups, Hill, Melo, Stoudemire, Jefferson) (w/ Fields, Shumpert, Balkman, Turiaf off the bench) that team can probably win a first round series.

    • http://slamonline.com nbk

Jeffries* not Jefferson. my bad slamily

    • IAMORANGE4EVER

nbk, is the same cat that said the Lakers could come back and beat the Mavs after the Mavs took the first 3 games. rofl

    • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Do they start Grant Hill at the two guard? Do they have enough shooters in that lineup to spread the floor?

    • http://Slamonline.com nbk

      No I’m not.

    • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

lmao nbk never said that. Even I didn’t say that.

    • http://Slamonline.com nbk

According to the reportfrom the New York post they told Hill he’d start at the 2

    • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

      I said that….. lol

    • IAMORANGE4EVER

As long as the Knicks have a healthy big three of Billups, Melo, and Stat all season, come playoff they’ll have a good seed, and go on a deep run. You can’t expect to advance in the playoffs when you lose two of your big three to injury and you’re depth is already thin to begin with. I know this, if Miami’s lost two of their big three after just putting their team together late in the season after a trade for let’s say LeBron, then played the Celtics in round 1, they too would have been fishing after round one.

    • LA Huey

Historically, Melo, just doesn’t plan to play past the 1st round. That’s why the Knicks got swept.

    • DuckTape The Mob

Best Trade Proposal I’ve heard – Pau to GS | Curry/Lee to New Orleans | Chris Paul to Lakers

    • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

It has always been Chris Paul saying he wasn’t to come here since day one, thats reality. I’m not looking for a championship just yet, that’s what the Yankees are for! That can be disappointing enough.. LOL!

    • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

      *wants

    • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

Allenp even with Grant Hill no I don’t think we have enough shooters per say, but D’Antoni’s system isn’t designed to space the floor with shooters for post up. It’s designed to simply shoot more than the other team. A run’n'gun system that effectively opens up lanes for Stat to go to work, not necessarily on the block. It is a flawed system, raw output vs. efficiency, but it is very effective. I am very interested to see how Melo is truly incorporated into this system. Drafting Shumpert, re-signing Jeffries, and looking at Grant Hill are actually acknowledgments of a need for defense.

    • IAMORANGE4EVER

The Lakers got swept last season with a full healthy roster, and they even struggled against the Hornets in round one. Their window is obviously closed for winning chips with that roster, hence the Lakers are trying to deal for Howard and Paul, but nobody is really wanting Pau Gasofts’s contract or Bynum’s wounded knees. As for Melo “historically” not getting past round one, that was funny, almost a funny as saying that about KG before he joined the Celtics. Let’s see how Melo and the Knicks do this year, Huey. I know he’ll be in the playoffs…he never misses the real season.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

      good point homie

    • Jennifer

I would LOVE to see CP3 and Blake Griffin play on the same team

    • Spades

Why are people so obsessed with this cripple? His knees are shot up. It’s not worth taking a gamble on an injury-riddled player even if he is an All-Star.

    • http://slamonline.com Allenp

KG went to the western conference finals as the league MVP in the only year in his prime where he had serious talent around him. Dont ever, EVER compare KG to Melo. KG did so much for that team he was even playing point guard at one point. Melo still doesn’t play consistent defense. Melo has been surrounded by talent his entire career KG has not.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

I hear that, KG is the God but he did that in like his 9th year in the league after year after year of being bounced in the first. So people were saying the very same thing about him at one point that people are saying about Melo.
