Jamal Crawford to Sign One-Year Deal With Portland Trail Blazers

Jamal Crawford was a wanted man this past week—Sacramento, New York and Portland were all reportedly courting him—and it appears he’ll be suiting up in Rip City this coming season. SI has the scoop: “Jamal Crawford has decided to sign a one-year, $5 million deal with Portland, according to sources close to the free-agent guard. But the deal is not yet finalized. The 11-year veteran topped the list of available perimeter scorers, and his list of possible destinations was shortened to Portland, Sacramento and New York on Tuesday. He also considered Indiana and Minnesota in the process, but instead chose to head for his home region in the Northwest and fill the void created by the recent retirement of Blazers guard Brandon Roy due to chronic knee injuries. But in order to give Crawford the $5 million deal, the Trail Blazers — who are a luxury tax-paying team and, thus, have only a mid-level exception that starts at $3 million — have two options: They can either use the amnesty clause on Roy’s contract before the deadline on Friday and then use the mid-level exception, or they can complete the process on a disabled player exception for Roy. But the latter option is often not a quick one, and indications are strong that Portland will take the amnesty route. Crawford, who made $10 million last season with the Hawks, only wanted a one-year deal so that he could take a second shot at free agency next summer.”

Awesome.. His 6th man days are likely behind him here in Portland.

Portland is going nowhere. I hope they have finaly fired their medical team. they SUCK ruined careers of two great talents in Roy and Oden. Good luck to Jamal Crawford his shake remains sick and to see him do that to kobe 3 to 4 times this year is going to be great to see.

Jamal do not drink anything the training staff gives out, I REPEAT stay away from the medical team, your knees will thank me later

The Bulls could have had him for the same money they’re wasti……paying Rip.

WHY not go back to ny?

  • LA Huey

If Roy’s retired for injury reasons, isn’t there a way his salary can be removed from the cap without using the amnesty? If so, they shouldn’t waste their amnesty option on Roy just to rent Crawford for a year.

He has to not play for a year. And stay retired after that.

Sooooo glad the Kings didn’t sign JCrossover. I would rather we try and sign Aaron Afflalo. We need defense and guys who can play without the ball.

Jamal is about money, not chips.

@Eboy – Crawford is definitely the better player at this stage, but he is also not a Thibodeau type of player. Or at least the perception. I think defensively he might even be better, but just no discipline perceived or real on offense.

They wanted to do that, but it would mean they couldn’t take any actions until he got cleared.
It’s crazy that teams are still signing players and opening day is in a few weeks.

  • LA Huey

OK, thanks for clearing that up, guys.
And Albert, y’all aint getting Afflalo. He’ll go the way of Nene.

@huey I agree but if we are chasing someone it should at least be a player who fills a need. Not another chucker.

Sacramento is not going to add any wings until they get rid of Salmons. That’s how it seems from what I’ve read. They were going to amnesty Salmons only if Jamal signed with them. Instead of that I think they will just wait it out. Evans, Thornton/Freddette, Salmons/Garcia/Greene, Thompson/Hickson, Cousins/Whiteside is a very good young group. They have a high ceiling in the future. I would bet they wait to amnesty Salmons until next summer when there is another Free Agent bonanza

Always thought he was under rated. good pick up for Portland.

I’m excited. He can fit right into Roy’s role on the team: a featured scorer who gets the ball in his hands a lot. Yes he takes bad shots but when he’s on it doesn’t matter. Plus he’s really fun to watch. I was hoping the Blazers would pick him up even before Roy’s retirement was announced but now I’m really glad we got him. I think we know what we are getting here and as long as we let him do what he does best, score, we will be in good shape.

Why do I feel he woulda fit right in with the ‘Jail Blazers’?
Portland continues their quest to remain the most mediocre team in the league

good pick up. cant wait to watch him with this team.

blazers will continue to creep into playoffs and lose in first round. again.

Who says the Blazers are rebuilding?

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

    @nbk good points

  • bt

I’m thinking he’ll be at the Suns in 2012, he would be a nice complementary piece to go with the players the suns will pick up with their cap space, as well as possibly an aging Hill and Nash Still. PLus his all offence no defence style fits right in with the suns.

  • Karley

just wait. Portland will suprise you this season. Rip City stand up.
this is going to be a great season even without Roy. lets go blazers!!
