JJ Barea: ‘It’s Not Looking Good Here in Dallas’

Free agent guard JJ Barea can see the writing on the wall in Dallas, and thinks he won’t be a Maverick by the start of the new season. From ESPN: “Free-agent point guard J.J. Barea said he believes he will be following Tyson Chandler and Caron Butler out of Dallas. ‘It’s not looking good here in Dallas, I don’t think,’ Barea said Tuesday night. ‘I’m disappointed. I wasn’t expecting this. Hopefully, it gets better.’ The defending champion Dallas Mavericks appear to be sticking to a plan that will get the franchise below the salary cap next summer for the first time in the Mark Cuban era. The goal is to create enough cap space to aggressively pursue one of the top three potential free agents, All-Star point guards Deron Williams and Chris Paul, and three-time defending defensive player of the year, center Dwight Howard. The casualties appear to be the Mavs’ four free agents that played key roles in winning the franchise’s first championship, including Chandler, the galvanizing defensive force, Butler, Barea and possibly also hard-edged shooting guard DeShawn Stevenson.”

I wonder where they’ll be taking their talents!

So they want to be overpayed for the next 4 seasons and are disappointed, that Cuban is just too smart to do that?

Butler played a key role in the championship? lolwut

Barea was pretty impressive last season, but it doesn’t really make that much sense to bring him back. Dallas still has Roddy Beaubois, who is pretty much a more athletic version of Barea. That is, if he can stay healthy.

What I’m really disappointed about is the possibility of Cubes not bringing Tyson Chandler back. I’m not really sure he’s worth the kind of money he’s going to get, but he’s still the best defender Dallas had last year. Plus, the idea of watching Dallas this season start Brendan Haywood makes me cringe. At least Mahimi looked promising.

It’s like Dallas doesn’t even want to repeat.

    yes!

Who exactly does Barea think he is? It is like he isn’t completely replaceable…. Roddy is waiting for his turn, and he has a way higher ceiling. Caron did nothing to help Dallas, Tyson Chandler and Deshawn don’t deserve to be overpaid.. I’d let Chandler walk if I know I can get Dwight, CP3 or Dwill next year imo. On second though… PLEASE STAY DeShawn!!!

they’ve got roddy, and rudy. so they’ll play in the barea and stevenson slots. They’ll miss his D the only guy they won’t replace this season is Chandler whom might just sign with dallas anyway next friday they’ll start mahinmi with haywood of the bench and free agent cheap big playing the rest of the minutes.

Did yall see what Barea did to the LAKERS and the HEAT?? He did seem a little irreplaceable (not saying they MUST sign him)…I AM saying that RODDY BOBEAU (sp) can NOT do what BAREA did to those team last year. NO WAY He could have played as well as Barea did…. but they are making the right move by not resigning…

I am a diehard Mavericks Fan, this is so disappointing!!!!!! We lose three of the guys that helped us get to and win the Championship. So we just give up this season to try to recruit one or two of three players that everyone else wants, WOW!!!!!

Get it done Walsh… to Knocks, Barea, to the Knocks!

Wow, talk about not retaining your championship peices. But Cuban is making the right move – the chances of bigger free agents signing next year are pretty good for Dallas, especially if the Nets don’t get anyone to help out Williams.

i think the mavs will suffer from this .the main reson the mavs won last season was because of chemistry ,not so much as talent .i dont expect them to be as good as last season

  • Fred33

for what ever reason dallas can never land the big free agent, this has been going on for a decade. There not going to land Chris Paul or D-Will (I know hes from Dallas) not gnna happen. Cuban gotta pay the dudes that won it for you, LOL tyson is alittle more important than rudy fernandez

I hope Cubes knows what he’s doing here. Smells like greed.
