Kevin Love is 25 Pounds Lighter This Season

NBA fans and media generally described Kevin Love as a little chunky during his first three seasons in the League, but that’s supposedly all about to change this year. From the Portland Tribune: “After an extended offseason of honing his body, Kevin Love will no longer qualify for the ‘beefy’ category. Minnesota’s 6-9 power forward will enter training camp on Dec. 9 weighing in at 240 pounds, down about 25 from his playing weight at the end of last season. ‘Haven’t been this low since my freshman year in high school,’ quips Love, 23, the former Lake Oswego High standout. How did Love become the NBA’s version of Gisele Bundchen? ‘If I give you all the secrets, then …’ Love teases during a Thanksgiving weekend visit to the Oswego home of his parents, Stan and Karen. Love continued his workouts through the offseason with trainer Gunnar Peterson near Kevin’s home in Santa Monica, Calif., but it was more than that. ‘It was taking care of my body, eating the right foods, getting sleep and training the right way,’ Love says. ‘More than anything, I paid attention to what I ate.’ A sleeker Love will mean more mobility, and will ease the pressure on his knees as they take a pounding through a shorter, but still lengthy NBA season.”

Good for him he’s cool but… The CHICAGO BULLS ARE GONNA BE THE 2012 WORLD CHAMPS!!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com greg

is that a good thing i thought his game was being big.

  • JEr dawg

How is he going to average 15 rpg now that he can’t hold his position with his size? Plus he isn’t muscular? He’s probably going to average 20 rpg now because he can chase down long rebounds, sky for alley oops, and run fast break. He might even block shots? Interesting now, because he’s damn amazing scoring and rebounding at high rate of efficiency given his athleticism as compared to others.

  • T-Money

this is one of those few occasions when i’m not sure being more fit is actually benefecial. love rebounds because he boxes out and holds his ground. even at 240, he’s not going to out-jump anybody so why lose the girth?

no more double doubles for yo now!

  • thor

Well it is always good to lose weight when we’re talking fat. He will get into the weight room and gain some of it back in muscles. He’s gonna be even more dangerous of a player I think.

  • burnt_chicken

this never would have happened under the steely gaze(s) of MuscleWatch.

  • well

how stupid now they have three tweeners in beasley, williams, and love

  • LA Huey

25 less is good for the knees.

  • ab40

9 rebounds per game whoooo good for him

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

How exactly is Love a “tweener”? He’s can’t play the 5. He can’t play the 3. He is a 4. And will play 4. No tweening there. I can’t say it will bode well or not for him. Remains to be seen. He’s still going to be boss on the boards the question is more boss or less boss… He certainly is gunna run better and jump easier. But was the “girth” he had what made him so dominant or was it his footwork? It was a combo, but I think mostly footwork. Reggie Evans isn’t a big dude and he works the glass big time. Ben Wallace never needed allot of weight to grab his boards. Rodman was a string bean for his first several years. We shall see. I see rough averages of 20,12 from him this season.

What happened to the 15 pounds of muscle?

  • Stevie Jenkins

Anyone who claims that Love’s lack of bulk will affect his rebounding should watch some Youtube clips of the Worm. It will probably make Love an iller rebounder. Read me?

  • bike

If he lost all that weight off his butt, he will not be as good a rebounder as he has been. The guy has a big butt, which is great for boxing out.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

^Hadn’t noticed Love’s butt. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • Stevie Jenkins

I noticed Love’s butt, but I wasn’t going to say anything.

Forget Love, take a look at the J Smoove slimness http://on.nba.com/tSpxN3.
He has lost 30 pounds over the summer!!
This makes me hope he stays with my hawks.

*looks down at Thanksgiving gut* wish I could say the same. I probably put on about 8lbs last weekend…not feeling it.

  • RunNGuN

Down 25 lbs? He probably packed on some muscle. This will help him with his mobility… he’s in a contract year, so we’ll see what happens. The Wolves will be league pass darlings.

We had lunch this summer. He went with grilled fish and veggies (no butter) while I was scarfing fries. He looked good. He paid for lunch, too, which was nice of him.

  • shutupallenp

@ryan did y’all kiss at the end of the date? or a nice long walk in the park holding hands?

Your right Teddy. Should have noticed that ass. Don’t know where mind is these days.

  • BBaller

Good for the timberwolves, they will still suck. So overrated. His team shoots poorly and the opponents are relaxed and miss shots that’s the only reason he averages 10+ boards a game. 2 inches above Luke Walton

  • ab40

The worm was a freak of nature. He could guard everyone at 6-7 215 which he was his entire career. Love is slow footed and big. He’ll get 10 tot 12 per game but not the 15 of last year. Of course he’ll get his boards, he has a nose for the ball and wants to rebound. That makes things easy.

  • shutupallenp

i agree he is overrated as a player, just goes to show how watered down the league is.

  • Chase

I’m sure he gained muscle, while losing some of the baby fat so he gets quicker while still being able to dominate his position. I don’t see him putting up 15 boards a game too often again, but Dwight Howardespue(20^pts & 12^rbds) numbers are definitely expected.
