Knicks Sign Tyson Chandler, Waive Chauncey Billups

The New York Knicks’ frontline just got a tremdenous boost, and their point guard play will be considerably worse in 2012. But they’ll be a fascinating squad. From the NY Times: Knicks trades are complete. It’s a 3-team deal w/Dallas and Washington. NY sends Turiaf, 2013 2nd-rd pick and cash to Wizards. Knicks acquire Chandler, plus rights to Ahmad Nivins and Giorgos Printezis. Mavs get Andy Rautins and protected 2012 2nd-rd pick from Wiz. Also official now: Knicks waive Chauncey Billups under amnesty provision. From interim GM Glen Grunwald: ‘Signing a player of Tyson’s caliber, with championship experience … is an opportunity we could not pass up.’ D’Antoni: ‘Tyson will be the anchor to our defense.’ Calls Tyson-Melo-Amare ‘one of the most formidable front lines in the entire league.’”

Best front court in the league?

  • gubbins

Who the hell is gonna play the point. Douglas not exactly a pure point. Shumpert?? Awesome signing for NY anyhoo.

  • matt

They should’ve just waited for the summer to get Paul. Also should’ve dealt douglas for R.Lopez. Where will Billups go now?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Would they not have had enough money to sign Billups, or what?? Now the Knicks are getting Mike Bibby instead of Billups?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Could they not have had:
    1. Billups
    2. Shumpert/Douglas
    3. Anthony
    4. Stoudemire
    5. Chandler??
That would have been a great line-up.

  • blakos

How much they pay for Chandler?

  • blakos

That is a solid front line.

  • Jose

Billups should take his talents to southbeach. . . .

  • O

Billups got a raw deal. That’s damn near the story of his NBA career. I think once the Knicks learned that Paul was going to the Lakers (and possibly signing an extension) they moved on. I’m pretty sure they’re going to resign Felton next summer. A healthy lineup of Chandler, Amare, Melo, Shumpert/Fields, and Felton could POSSIBLY spell Championship. Assuming that the Lakers don’t sign Paul AND Howard or something to that effect.

it would be a great finals series though

  • vander

billups can go to miami heat now. that team will rock then. go knicks!

  • Heals

Cub’s and Dal are upto something with that trade exception they got through this deal…

Someone to anchor the defense! YES!

    Why cut Billups?

  • ab40

best frontcourt in the L is in Memphis. I think CHandler will soon be rendered useless and overrated in new york. No point guard, no wing D, And probably an injury or two this season. Good luck New York, you’ll need it. oh And billups is not going to sign with just anyone he’s going to wait and wait and wait till he can sign with a contender. This whole bidding on the players thing is gonna suck form almost every team. The problem is most teams have drafted point guards the last few years so they are going to “develop” them HA. I think a team like sacramento would love him, I just don’t think he’s going to want to sign there. Do the Knicks even have a point guard right now? And if cp3 goes to the lakers and decides to sign with the knicks next summer for like 10mil will kobes head explode and jerry buss his legs also hehe?

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

I’m not even sure we’ll have 10 million to offer CP3 next year to be honest. How funny would it be if CP3 leaves LA because he couldn’t get along with Kobe or something crazy like that?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Right, the Knicks probably aren’t getting Paul now… So what the hell are they letting Billups go for? What the hell is Dolan thinking?? I’m a fan of Toney Douglas but he will NOT lead the team like Billups.

  • Allenp

That is the last of their cap space. They are stuck.

  • Red

D’antoni is SO damn annoying, the best front court will be in Chicago, we’re so deep and now deeper if we replace Bogans with Rip.

  • riggs

the best frontcourt in the league.

  • http://www.tumblr.com Arthurissupreme

now we just need a different head coach

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

    Phil Jackson next year perhaps??

  • jarrett

first thing Knicks have to do is Fire D’Antoni…

  • justopinion

    True, allenp^

  • RunNGun

Knicks need to re-hire Walsh and extend D’Antoni for the next ten years. SSOL is the best way to play basketball but unfortunately Anthony is plodder. When the offense runs through Melo, everything just stops. Just ask the Denver Nuggets…

  • LA Huey

Assuming Grizz get Marc back, the Memphis frontline is still the best in the league.

@O … I’m sure Phil Jackson’ll return from doing vacation and wearing 10 rings on his fingers and one on his ****. Perhaps he’s going to fill that pg hole by putting himself in the startin lineup?

  • Bt

SomeOne remind me why they picked up the team option on billups other than to waste their amnesty

  • Drunyce

Best front court in the league is right. Melo – Stat – TC > MEM/LA. Also for those of you fake bball heads. The front court is closest to the basket. The guards play in the BACKcourt. Duh… SMH.

  • EtheKnickFan

Im giddy, but I think we gonna regret this Billups move.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

    D’Antoni wins!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com PapaDuck

Over paid for this guy. Plus they give another draft pick away. Do they have any draft picks left? Chandler won’t make up for all their defensive needs. And Stat won’t play tough basketball, Melo won’t play tough basketball… so they will still loose to the better east teams, Bulls and Heat have a tougher teams than they do.

  • http://www.twitter.com/hurstysyd Hursty

Knicks needed to clear the cap space to sign Chandler. Only way to do this was to trade away/release Turiaf and Billups. This left them a small amount of $ left.. ending up in Mike Bibby.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

Does tougher basketball include finishing with dunks in transition, or in alleyoops? the Knicks just got tougher this frontline is sick Melo, Stat and TYSON Chandler (not Wilson) i still see them outscoring the Bulls and possibly the Heat routinely this move is boss.

  • Yesse

Are they really that confident on getting CP3?

  • Tofu

billups is going to end up in LA if Odom goes..wait and see

  • Selwyn ( UK )

Saw an interview with Mike D’A . He compared the present Knick lineup (without Chauncey ) to the ’86 Celtics ! WTF ? The 86 Celtics is either the best single season team ever, or 2nd best behind 96 Bulls. D’A comparing Landry Fields + Toney Douglas to Dennis Johnson (RIP ) + Ainge. Comparing that Celtics team to the present Knicks team is logical ….if you just suffered a severe head injury .

  • charliewinning

The Knicks have the best frontcourt in the L but D’Antoni has to go. There is a reason he and Don Nelson never win chips despite all the regular season wins… Oh, and the Bulls are overrated. Noah+Boozer+Deng<Chandler+STAT+Melo.
