Lakers GM: Team Still Pursuing ‘Big Deals’

While explaining the head-scratching Lamar Odom trade to Dallas, Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak told the assembled media that the team hasn’t given up on making a splash with a big trade. Per the OC Register: “We are pursuing big deals right now,’ Kupchak said. But Kupchak said he didn’t know if anything could come to fruition and therefore ‘we expect to have them (Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum) all season, yes.’ Kupchak said that was the only way he could look at it given the uncertainty. It was clear that no one but Bryant, who has a no-trade clause in his contract, can be assured of staying on the Lakers’ roster. ‘There are no guarantees going forward,’ Kupchak said. Regardless, armed with the trade exception acquired in the Lamar Odom deal from Dallas, Kupchak said he does intend to ‘add to the mix’ on the roster with one player or two before the start of the season. He recognized the shortcomings currently in the frontcourt. Kupchak said Odom would not have been traded if he hadn’t asked for a trade. He also said the Lakers acted quickly in part because ‘it’s very rare to be able to move a player of that salary size ($8.9 million).’ Lamar is probably more sensitive and more emotional than most people,’ said Kupchak, noting that it is a positive for Odom more than a negative. But Kupchak said Odom ‘couldn’t get over’ the Lakers having tried to trade him for Paul before that deal was blocked by the NBA, owners of the New Orleans Hornets. ‘It’s all tied into what took place last week (with the aborted Paul trade),’ Kupchak said about Odom.”

When was the last time Mitch or any GM came out and told the media “we’re pursuing big deals”? Whatever big deal Kupchak has in mind, it won’t be including CP or DHow.

  • MaxIsNative

Mitch, stop it. (But as a Spurs fan, keep on doing you Mitch. Get those 1st round draft picks from the teams that will pick last.)

If it’s possible,CP3?Nuh’oh. Superman? YES! It’ll be d best Laker team EVER with D’howard in it! :D

There should be no ‘head scratching.’ They traded Odom b/c of that stupid reality show. Sign the petition at Boycottkim ((dotcom)) Over 240,000 signatures

well, if those deals don’t include CP3/Dwight, they’re not big deals. Don’t lie Mr.Cupcheck.

This reminds me of the time in American Dad when Roger keeps telling Stan that he has ” big stuff planned” when he was actually just a crash test dummy.

at this point is there even any good players left to get. smh

I’ve got a feeling Mitch may be working to get Paul Milsap or Nene.

  • Kadavour

the Lakers have so much dead wood on their roster that it’s getting laughable. if you want to be defense focused team, drop Joe Smith, Luke Walton and Derek Fisher YESTERDAY.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

If the Lakes were committed to trading Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol for Chris Paul, why didn’t they just wait the extra 24 hours for Stern to approve the trade? Lamar Odom is a valuable trade chip–if they wanted to dump his salary they could have done so via a trade… for an actual player. Instead they gift-wrapped him to their rival.

i dont think it was really possible to get Paul after they called it off. The NBA just told the media that to save face. They would have never approved the Lakers unless they gave up Bynum and Odom or some super lopsided deal like that

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Lakers signed Gerald “Cupcake” Green. BIG DEAL!

  • mike

Pick up nene as a pf trade gasol fisher and the rest of the bench for a pg and a sf

I will be curious to see the first Laker/Maverick game to see if Odom goes off or not. Would like to see him drop 40 on them just for the principality.

Lakers just signed Gearld Green and Josh McRoberts. Must be getting ready to go for Dwight.
Meanwhile, Kobe was just quoted as saying “you got to be m%$#erF*ck**g kidding me,you got to be m%$#erF*ck**g kidding me, you got to be m%$#erF*ck**g kidding me, ….”

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

…actually, McRoberts isn’t terrible, but Green???

  • Holiday

Don’t be surprised if the Lakers don’t make the top 4 or 5 seeds in the west, and don’t kid yourself if you think they have a shot a the title this year!!!!

  • bull22

@holiday, you are correct they have no SHOT at nba title with the roster they have now… only la nut jobs think they have a chance.. funny how kobe did not stick for his teammates when they had cp3 coming to town and when odom was gone he cried like a baby.

  • DuckTape The Mob

@bull22 I Have seen no sort of evidence Kobe cried Did you see tears fall at Lakers media Day?

    You one Lame ass Kid

  • BlackNicholson

It’s all badd… You don’t trade Lo for a 6″1′ point guard. Two 7 footers? Man there was nothing wrong with the team, except maybe a lil more outside shooting was needed. We have just lost all of our versatility, and karma is a bia…

  • http://www.slamonline.com biged

the Lakers eff up this off season. All they had to do was lure a couple of guys to the team. No need to try to blow up the team just for a one or two stars. They was giving up too much for CP3 and will probably have to give up a lot for Howard. Bynum Gasol Odom was a great thing to build on. I wouldn’t mind if they gave up Bynum for Howward. But dont try to give away two seven foot guys for a point gaurd. They needed to replace Shannon Brown, get an above average point gaurd to add to the rotation and one or two bench guys. And they should have replace World Peace with Shane Battier; that would have been a good signing.

  • Heals

@biged, yup yup. I thought that after 3 finals appearances their core deserved the opportunity to prove last year was not “them.” I felt a younger pg, better back-up scoring guard and defensive sf, maybe a more reliable 3rd big and they were set…
