Marc Gasol Re-Signs With Grizzlies: 4 Years, $57 Million

Marc Gasol broke the news himself on Twitter last night, and the Commercial Appeal has the details of the deal: “Gasol, 26, accepted a four-year deal worth $57.7 million — the maximum the Grizzlies could offer. He’ll be paid a starting salary of $12.9 million with a 7.5 percent raise in each year of the deal. The contract is conventional, meaning there are no player or team options. ‘I’m proud to say that we have reached a tentative agreement with my team @memgrizz,’ Gasol wrote on Twitter. “Can’t wait to get on the court with all my teammates!’ The 7-footer missed the Grizzlies’ first four days of training camp but is expected in town today for a physical and news conference. He should be available to participate in practice by Wednesday. Memphis initially offered Gasol a five-year pact; Gasol preferred to sign for four seasons. ‘We’re happy with four years,’ Griz owner Michael Heisley said. ‘He got a better deal than he could anywhere else. I was never worried. It was just negotiations. It was an amicable discussion. We never battled.’ Griz officials were always confident about Gasol’s return. Other teams could pay Gasol only a maximum of $55 million over four years with 4.5 percent pay increases.”

An durable, above average 7 footer is a rare Pokemon in this league. That kind of money is fitting.
