NBA Agrees to Trade Chris Paul to Clippers

First it was the Lakers, then it wasn’t. Then it was the Clippers, before it wasn’t again. Now, according to a Yahoo! Sports report, the NBA has approved a Chris Paul trade, after all. CP3 lands in Los Angeles with…the Clippers.

The details, from Adrian Wojnarowski and Marc J. Spears:

The NBA has reached an agreement to trade New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Hornets will receive guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and theMinnesota Timberwolves’ unprotected first-round pick.

Assuming all the paperwork goes through—not an easy assumption—Chris Paul will be throwing alley-oops to Blake Griffin this season, although getting him cost a hefty price tag. Will it work out for LAC?

Comparing players from different era is like comparing apples from medieval Europe and oranges from feudal Japan. Everything’s different…even the position itself changed over time. So the question boils down to: who was the most dominant, the best of his time?

Pistol Pete ran the point too that wiley old tycoon…

Whoaaa, take it easy there Mr. Nobody’s Opinion But Yours Counts AllenP. I never said Nash was top 5 either. I said I’d take him over Payton and Zeke. Big difference. And yes that means neither of them is in my top 6. I don’t think you really appreciate what Nash did for his teams in his prime and what he still does for them now. Once again, shockingly, you people put so much emphasis on a player’s individual stats to compare to others. How about checking out how their teams did without them when they were injured, or how other individual players’ stats went way down because of it. Bottom line is, he has back to back MVP’s on his resume while Payton and Zeke don’t have any. I don’t want to hear any crap about how those guys had Jordan, Magic, Larry, and then Barkley and Malone to go against either. Nash had Shaq, Duncan, Kobe, and KG to go against as well. Naturally you all will say he didn’t deserve it for whatever reason but what you guys think doesn’t matter. It’s what the people that saw everyone play everyday thinks and they think he won. It can be argued he should have won 3 in a row because his stats and team were actually better than his previous two years but people weren’t going to put him in Larry Bird/Kareem territory. What exactly did Gary Payton do better than Nash anyway, other than defense and rebound? Was he a better shooter? No. Free throw shooter? No. Ran the offense better, played pick and roll better, ran the break better, passed better…? The answer is also no, no, no, and a resounding no. It’s amazing how reluctant people are to give a short little white guy his credit but that’s no surprise in these parts either.

Also, there is another Justin that posts on here. I’ll start using my last initial after this to discern the difference for you so we can see what “outlandish ish” you guys are talking about.
Spades, saying Thomas and Dumars shut down Jordan might be one of the more outlandish things I’ve seen someone say on here, especially the 89-90 series. Jordan averaged 36 in that series. Man, I’d hate to get shut down like that. They played him the toughest at that time but shut down? Hardly

  • bt

I think everyone is missing the main benefit of this trade and the Billups signing. If they finally make the playoffs they wont have to give Mo Williams – the guy who hasn’t shown up for a playoff game in his life – any minutes so they might have a shot at winning a series.

  • bt

and my all time point guard rankings: (excluding Cousy because I haven’t seen enough of him to have any idea where to put him)
    1) Magic – 5 championships and incredible offence overrides poor defence
    2) Oscar – Way ahead of his time
    3) Zeke – Over stockton because his lack of longetivity is offset by his leadership and abiliity to take over and win big games
    4) Stockton
    5) Nash – Noone has turned chicken s**t into chicken sald like he does
    6) Payton – Best defensive point guard of all time

  • Justin

bt, I like your top 5 although Jason Kidd needs to be there. I’d probably put Stockton over Zeke. Longevity means something when you’re still playing at a high level at an older age like he was, and like Nash is. West is 4th, Nash and Zeke can battle for 5th and 6th and MAYBE Payton at 7th.

  • SKITTLESO5

West was a shooting guard Justin so doesnt apply.Tiny Archibald should be ahead of Nash and Payton as should Walt Frasier.

  • Justin

It’s weird. Depending on which site you go to, they have him as a shooting guard or a point guard, and some just guard. Fair enough, take him out of the point guard race. Archibald is not ahead of Nash and Frasier is debatable too.

random sidebar question because it just occurred to me:
Between DeAndre Jordan vs. Javale McGee (spelling) who’d you rather take at the 5?

  • Colt6

Stockton did not win any championships. I have no respect for a point guard who can’t win the big one. Generals win. JKidd just did. I like the list. Magic, Big O, COUSY, Zeke, JKidd, Payton. CP3 is on the rise but until he wins a title his legacy will be forever in question.

  • SKITTLESO5

    archibald is ahead of nash

  • Justin

Colt, using championships as a sole factor in a player’s legacy is just plain dumb. He had the misfortune of playing in the Bird/Magic era in the 80′s and the Jordan era from then on. As did Ewing, Barkley, Malone, Drexler and a lot of guys. Saying you have no respect for him because of that is completely ridiculous. Payton got his ring but it wasn’t exactly like he was a main contributor to that Heat team. In his prime he apparently couldn’t get it done either

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

    1. Magic
    2. Stockton
    3. Zeke
    4. Oscar
    5. Kidd
Where’s nbk, Allen and Enig to add some sanity?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Caboose, if you were building a franchise and have the chance to build around either a prime John Stockton or a prime Isiah Thomas, who are you selecting?

  • Allenp

Nash plays no defense. None. He only succeeded in an uptempo style. And he was only very good for a huge chunk of his career becoming great in his dotage.
Isiah was second only to Magic his whole career and beat Magic Bird and Jordan the Holy Trinity of basketball. Nash has never “led” his team to the Finals and Mavs have done better since he left.
No serious basketball person sweets would put Nash over Isiah. Stockton is debatable though. Frazier kills Nash. Payton kills Nash. So does Tiny. Nash had one of the most talentedracially teams of this era and never got to the Finals because his team never played consistent defense. Just like him.

  • Allenp

The phone added racially on its own.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Sorry, but Nash contends for best shooter and passer among all points, ever. He’s great at taking charges but overall doesn’t play acceptable defence, although it should be said that rule changes make it much harder to play defence at the point than it was in Payton’s time. My list of points: 1) Magic, 2) Oscar, 3) Stockton, 4) Isaiah, 5) Kidd, although I consider 4 and 5 to be interchangeable. Payton and Nash both compete for the #6 spot; not sure who gets it. Either way I think Paul (if he stays healthy) and Rose will surpass them both in a few years.

  • Allenp

I can’t believe y’all are sleeping on Frazier like this. Dude was Payton before Payton except a better passer. Nash is the ninth or tenth best point depending on how you feel about Cousy.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Allenp, look at these stats by Frazier versus the Lakers in game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals: 36 points, 19 assists, 7 rebounds. Clyde was a KILLER.

  • http://Barondavisisfat.youaretoo nbk

Magic, Isiah, Oscar, Walt, Stockton – It’s really hard for me to put Stockton above Kidd. – Caboose, I had a playoff game and chiropractors appointment during this crazy discussion, and reading through the comments I’m kinda happy I missed it.

  • http://Barondavisisfat.youaretoo nbk

Frazier is the only PG to win a title as his teams true 1st option.

  • Allenp

Nah Isiah was the first option.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@nbk: So how did your playoff game on NBA 2K12 go?

  • http://Barondavisisfat.youaretoo nbk

Well I had this argument with shutup and he was arguing against Isiah as the first option because it was only the end of games that Isiah became “the first option” the other parts of the game the Pistons ran plays for Adrian Dantly, Vinnie Johnson. – so to avoid that argument again I said true first option about Frazier. Cuz in 73 he was the first option all game long for that Knicks team.

  • http://Barondavisisfat.youaretoo nbk

Real life playoff game comedian, we won by 54

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Just messing with you nbk. Let me guess, you had a triple double?

  • http://Barondavisisfat.youaretoo nbk

    No chance in that.

  • Karley

Clippers will still be a terrible team. maybe winning 25 games.

Is it bad that I have oscar over stockton?

  • http://Barondavisisfat.youaretoo nbk

Not at all, I have an internal conflict putting Stockton over Kidd. Lol

  • http://nba.com GP23

^No, Charles Barkley said Oscar is the second greatest player of all time on TNT. (astounding I know) Although, he was an amazing talent on the hardwood no doubt!!

  • bobbyD

@Justin – What did Payton do better than Nash? How about scoring.
