NBA Agrees to Trade Chris Paul to Clippers

First it was the Lakers, then it wasn’t. Then it was the Clippers, before it wasn’t again. Now, according to a Yahoo! Sports report, the NBA has approved a Chris Paul trade, after all. CP3 lands in Los Angeles with…the Clippers.

The details, from Adrian Wojnarowski and Marc J. Spears:

The NBA has reached an agreement to trade New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Hornets will receive guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and theMinnesota Timberwolves’ unprotected first-round pick.

Assuming all the paperwork goes through—not an easy assumption—Chris Paul will be throwing alley-oops to Blake Griffin this season, although getting him cost a hefty price tag. Will it work out for LAC?

Finally! Gonna be oop city in Los Angeles! About time the Clippers got a squad. To bad they had to give up Eric Gordon though.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

    wow

  • TSmoove

Any chance they trade Mo for a solid SG now? There are a lot of PGs on that roster now

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Off by 2 days.

  • jake

Too bad they have no reliable shooters or perimeter defenders.

  • robb

    I feel for him.

  • Mariano

Yeah who’s supposed to defend in the front court?

  • MikeC.

    What is Billups’ role now?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

CP3 to the Clippers…No Dwight Howard on the market anymore. LO in Big D. How do you like them apples, Huey?

  • Mariano

    back court*

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@MikeC: back up CP3 and play some 2 guard.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Depends what happens with Mo Williams @ Mike C. Right now it’s CP3, Billups, Butler, Griffin, Jordan. With Mo Williams, Eric Bledsoe, Ryan Gomes, and I believe Craig Smith on the bench

  • Ldub20

why did they get billups then? they have bledsoe, billups, williams and now cp3?? yes billups can slide to the 2 guard…but hes no eric gordon. this is a good trade for the hornets. they get good talent back. but is cp3 even going to sign an ext with this “LA” team??? TOO many pieces given up IMO. Should have waited it out. This still doesnt make them a contender. NOT IN THE WEST!!!

  • JoeMaMa

Chris Paul. Chauncey Billups. Maurice Williams. Eric Bledsoe. The Clippers can’t be done dealing; not with 4 PGs on the squad. The question is, who goes?? Paul, No. Bledsoe was apparently too valuable to deal. Billups was just signed. I’m thinking Mo, but still…3 PGs, two of whom are used to leading their team? I’m pretty sure the Clips want Bledsoe to come along slowly as a back up, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Billups go to a contender for another decent vet. The Clippers want to win now. I just can’t see Billups become a backup PG when he’s coming off a season where he averaged 17 and 5+ for a playoff team, nor can I see him become a 2 guard, a position he hasn’t played in what, 9, 10 years?? Thoughts?

  • ionmic

I wonder if Neil Olshey knows David Kahns phone number, i think Minnesota need a point guard or two……….

  • ripslam

Disappointed that they lost Eric Gordon. He was a perfect fit on last year’s Clips squad.

  • Mookie.B

Why is a great PG and PF with a supporting cast not enough?

Stockton and Malone did it their whole career and did ok.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Couple things. Congrats to the Clippers and their fans. Lakers brass go f*ck yourself. Lastly, David Stern go f*ck yourself.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Man… I feel for Eric Gordon, but he’ll be dope on the Hornets. Kaman and Okafor will be a formidable front court. This was just as good, if not better than the Lakers trade for the Hornets because EG and Aminu are still really young–EG especially is a franchise-worthy player you can build a future around.

  • JESUS THE NOTORIOUS

¡Increible! No to the Lakers, but yes, maybe, to the f√¢kin Clippers!?
That’s the f√¢kin NBA for you.
    ¡Que verguenza!

  • Raseven7

Clippers got jerked giving up Gordon smdh

  • charliewinning

CP to Blake is gonna make Blake even more awesome to watch. Sucks for Gordon but he’ll get buckets in NO like crazy…On another note, I read MJ’s comments about blocking the CP3-Laker trade. I can’t say I’m suprised or disappointed that he’s turned out to be the kind of owner that he is, but aside from basketball skill why would anyone look up to him? I hope star players remember the lockout and the CP fiasco when Charlotte recruits them during free agency.

  • BRAVO

    damnnnn

  • Travesty

Billups can’t be traded until July so I’m guessing they deal Bledsoe and mo Williams for a 2 guard. Who’s the backup center now?

  • http://slamonline.com Fut.

I really wish they had kept EG but at least he can go be the star on NO.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pawtucket-YMCA-Youth-Basketball-League/278842845500531 Gametimeweezy

Love Eric Gordon’s game and all but I’d take CP3 all day. Billups starts at 2guard… Butler, Blake, and Jordan as a frontline. SICKNENING ATHLETICISM!!!

  • Bojangles

David Stern for executive of the year.

  • Paul

This is a worse trade than when the Grizzlies trade Pau Gasol to the Lakers for peanuts.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

So Stern….this was in the best interest of the Hornets??? Gordon, Aminu, Kaman > Scola, Odom, and Kev Martin?????…..smh, the trade is good for the fans I guess. A lot of us want to see Paul and a guy like Griffin play together…thats cool….I just feel it for Chris Paul, hope for the best for him either ways.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Great trade for all sides. The Clippers have two legitimate superstars, a two-player core that can compete for championships in a couple years with the right surrounding parts. I have little doubt that if Paul resigns and his knee holds up the Clippers will have little doubt attracting other pieces to fill the holes in the roster. The Hornets, meanwhile, get some promising young talent and what will probably be a very high pick in next year’s loaded draft.

  • robb

If CP3 wanted to play for a contender, he can kiss those plans goodbye. Throwing oops to Blake will be exciting for the fans but as far as championships go, he’s not getting one there. And giving up Gordon was a mistake, Billups as a SG’s not gonna work and they have no depth now. Congrats to the Hornets, they got a good deal out of these chumps.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Canuck

Imagine Paul, Gordon, Butler, Griffin, Jordan. Holy smokes. I don’t think I’d have given up both the Minnesota pick and Gordon if I were the Clippers, they’d have been fine running with Billups, Gordon, Butler, Griffin and Jordan. Hopefully Paul can stay healthy, they really need to get rid of Mo Williams for a backup big or a shooting guard though.

  • chingy

That Minny pick is huge. NO got a pretty good deal IMO. EG is a budding star, Aminu can be a good util player and Kamen and Okafor will make a good 1-2 punch in the front court. Kamen provides the offense and Okafor the D.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Canuck

Black Rick Kamla, there’s no way the Lakers deal was better for the Hornets for the FUTURE. Gordon is a potential franchise guy and most importantly he’s young, unlike the players they would’ve got from Houston and the Lakers. Plus their Minnesota pick could easily turn into an Anthony Davis/Harrison Barnes type player. If I’m the Hornets, give me the Clippers deal over the Lakers/Rockets deal 10 times out of 10.

  • chingy

@The Black Rick Kamla, don’t forget the pick. That can turn into a superstar with the upcoming draft.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

CP has a shaky knee. Is 3 years older than Gordon. Minnesota is horrible, and unless Ricky Rubio really is what Slam made him out to be when he was 14 the Wolves will yield a great pick for the Hornets. Plus Kaman’s deal is expiring. Aminu has big potential (probably not gonna realize it though…), and now Ariza becomes expendable even if you let his contract runs out. This deal may not improve the Hornets like the LAL deal, but it helps the future, and probably faster. The only thing I see is, Kaman with his expiring deal plays the same position as Okafor and his albatross of a contract. So idk why they didn’t get a third team, or if they are parlaying Kaman. The madness is not over

  • T-Money

I expect them to cut Billups or Mo. But that’s a boss team now, Clips are still 14 mil under the cap. They can throw money at guys like Ray Allen, KG or Kevin Love next summer. Actually, they could even offer the whole 14 mil to Gordon and see if NO will match!

  • Anonymousefanclippers

ok so they got CP3, now what? They have no big man and they got no shooting guard, something must happen in order for the clippers to be contenders. They could of one as eric gordan, aminu, griffin, billups and kaman. 4 pgs got to cut to 2, what will they lost and who will they get?

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

…let me take that last comment back….I really don’t know how a REAL basketball fan can be any bit happy with these events….its sickening to me….Stern fronting under the guise of looking out for the best interests of the Hornets franchise and doing what is the best interests of the “Association”….

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Even though the clipps now have the best PG and a Top-5 player, I think they gave up too much for him. That first round pick from Sota will probably be a Top-3 pick and in a deep draft, that’s huge. Imagine a lineup of ADrummond or ADavis, BGriff, Butler, Gordon, CBillups, that’s a championship contending lineup right here.
Regardless, as a basketball fan, I’m ecstatic. This just another incentive for me to get LP, 60+ gms of CP picking and rolling with BGriff. I can’t wait!

  • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pawtucket-YMCA-Youth-Basketball-League/278842845500531 Gametimeweezy

Keep in mind CP3 was leaving New Orleans anyways. Possibly could have gotten a better deal near the trade deadline but this sets the Hornets up for a promising rebuild mode.

  • Allenp

Neoarin was right. Wanted to give him his props. There was a better deal out there than what the Lakers offered. But this was floated over the summer so I don’t know why the Hornets even considered the Lakers deal.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

@TBRK no, not happy at all. Stern is a loon. But it’s crazy entertaining.

  • marc

in terms of talent, lakers proposal had an edge because of LO.. gordon=martin kaman=scola..but you can’t rebuild with those guys plus that mini pick..better deal for the hornets.. david stern is a shrewd nba gm..

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

    @chingy highly HIGHLY doubt it

  • http://www.slamonline.com Canuck

@The Black Rick Kamla: Absolutely, I agree that it’s awful what transpired over the last week with Stern vetoing a trade that should’ve been allowed with the Lakers. All I’m saying is this deal is far better for the Hornets for the long term than the last deal was.

  • Allenp

Chauncey has played the two at times. In fact didn’t he do it for Team USA?

  • T-Money

marc spears is reporting that they’re not waiving chauncey. so mo gotta go then? you can get away with chauncey at the 2 but not mo…

  • Allenp

If Stern was a regular owner he would have been fine but he wasn’t. He said he wasn’t going to be involved but he was.

  • Arne

    Rofl @ ianmic

  • http://www.slamonline.com Alf

I must be missing it….net result still says the same: How’s a CP/Blake-Griffin combo THAT much better than a CP/David-West one?

regardless of who the supporting characters ends up being on the clips, I doubt they would be just as good as when CP is in New Orleans….

So how does this team fare potentially? A first round exit? A second round exit? Tell me, how much better would that be were he to stay in NO?

Not necessary dis-approving the trade, just not seeing the justification for it.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@marc Eric Gordon isn’t touching Kevin Martin on any day, and his health is still an issue…and Kaman’s never completely reliable health wise either and on top of that Scola is much more physical, plays much harder and in my opinion is just as skilled if not more so. By no stretch does this deal equate to the previous

  • chingy

@TBRK…what makes you so certain that a top 3/5 pick in what many considers to be one of the deepest drafts in recent memory can’t yield a potential superstar?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Gordon is way better than Martin not to mention, he’s younger. Martin is a one-trick pony, horrendous defender and injury prone.

  • chingy

Also, to think EG can’t touch Kevin Martin is naive considering EG’s age/potential. The guy’s a 18 ppg for his career and had 22 ppg last year in his injury season.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Alf, are you serious? BG as rookie, is already better than DWest during his prime. The man put up 22/12/3 in his first season, so just imagine the kinds of numbers he puts up with CP handling the rock. We are about to see the seconding coming of Stockton to Malone.

  • IDOT

I wonder who the Clips are gonna get to play SG for the Clips?

  • chingy

And thank you JTaylor to pointing out the defense part.

  • JESUS THE NOTORIOUS

Haha! Clippers aren’t contending for anything. With or without Paul.

  • jarrett

    the lakers got screwed

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

mo williams can be kind of a Jason Terry kind of sixth man tho

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

New York could use a point guard. Bledsoe for Landry Fields or Mo Williams for Fields + Devin Green?

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

Also, Im assuming Randy Foye will probably start unless someone gets traded.

  • marc

@TBRK i said the lakers deal had an edge..but you can’t argue that a rebuilding franchise needs players that already reached their potential..that just makes them good enough to make the playoffs but also miss high lottery picks..

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

I have no idea how anybody could be pissed off at Stern’s achievements in his role as caretaker owner of NO. He’s set them up with a go-to guy in Gordon, and two top-10 picks in one of the deepest drafts we’ve seen. This absolutely kills the Lakers deal in terms of setting them up for the future. Wins next season are nothing compared to getting that Minny pick and “tanking” to get that other franchise player in the draft this year. Stern did a ridiculous job getting that much out of the Clippers… smh at some people who are just hating on him.

  • robb

@jarrett from a marketing point of view, yes, but the Lakers still have Gasol, Bynum and Kobe, and they can still add some more talent. McRoberts is a good defensive player. Everything happens for a reason and history has never favored the Clippers. Too bad for Chris.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ T-Money: That would be hilarious if the Clippers re-signed Eric Gordon during the summer. They’d be REALLY freaking good if they did that… But I’m guessing the Hornets would match.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pawtucket-YMCA-Youth-Basketball-League/278842845500531 Gametimeweezy

Eric Gordon can ball I learned that watching him play for the national team last year (didn’t Kevin Martin try out). Anyways thats not even the point point is the Hornets weren’t getting a better deal anytime soon unless they waited till deadline. This move works now they go into a full fledge rebuild mode.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

I used to think Black Rick Kamla was a pretty solid and knowledgable commenter on here.
No disrespect, fam, but you been dropping some duds lately.
Eric Gordon can’t touch Kevin Martin? Are you serious?
And you really don’t think a Minnesota unprotected first round pick for what figures to be the deepest draft class since 2003 is valuable?
    It’s the L Wolves, dawg.
The Hornets are getting someone named Drummond, Davis, Barnes, Jones, Gilchrist, Sullinger, Lamb, Teague, or Miller next year.
In addition to Gordon, Kaman, Aminu right now.
This deal is way better than the one the Lakers put out.

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

Haha damn Lakeshow, thats how u feel? But yea we fu*ked up this off season so far

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

The NBA/Stern were patient, and they did get a better deal. It’s a fact now. @Allenp it’s good to see you give neoarin his props. Not many people will admit they’re WRONG on SLAM. lol

  • Louis

If Gordon becomes a star and Minnesota’s pick turns into another great player then the clippers will be feeling pretty stupid. They probs gave up too much in my opinion

  • http://www.slamonline.com Alf

JTaylor: If you base it on stats – sure…Dwest doesn’t compare.
In fact, I’ll give you this…according to NBA.com; CP avg 22p/11.5 assists last year. Those points are negated because you simply replaced Ben Gordon’s 22p/4a. Granted, CP has ~7 more dimes. BUT you just lost Kaman’s 12p/7r. Sure you kept DeAndre, but you are down to a two-man rotation of bigs really (just DeAndre/BG)…….so original question still stands: How is this overall that much better than what CP is leavng behind in New Orleans? Statisically, the clippers become a fantasy-league players dream, but overall still a 2nd-round exit at best. I thought CP’s intentions were to really get on a team to contend for a title not medicore playoff performance.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Laker fans don’t be mad. You still have 2 Top-15 players and a Bill Russell/Wilt/Walton/Kareem/Hakeem/Shaq hybrid. Don’t fear Laker fans, Biruwiwakahash Bynum is here to save the day.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pawtucket-YMCA-Youth-Basketball-League/278842845500531 Gametimeweezy

Clippers are one big man away from being better than the Lakers.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

^ How do you know the Clippers aren’t contenders?
He gets to play alongside Blake Griffin, Caron Butler, DeAndre Jordan, Chauncey Billups, Mo Williams, and Eric Bledsoe. As opposed to Emeka Okafor and Marco Bellineli. Are you serious?
The roster in New Orleans this year is even worse than it was last year because David West and Aaron Gray both skipped town.
    It’s not even comparable.

  • Flight

Billups cannot be traded because he was picked up off of amnesty waivers. He can be bought out, than signed by another team but sources say that will not happen.

  • dma

the clippers should keep all 4 PGs if they were smart. Chauncey is getting older. CP3 isn’t the ideal candidate for injury free player. and with this shortened schedule, they’ll need some young legs.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Alf, at this very moment, you’re right. The reason why it’s better than the situation in NO is BGriff. The guy has the potential to be the best PF this season and a fringe top-10 player. The NBA is a superstar-driven league. How many teams in the L have 2 Top-10 players on their roster? That alone makes the clipps a formidable team and a threat to upset a top-seed in the playoffs.

  • JL

Man just when the clips were starting to do good in trades and pickups. They go and give it all away! Come on if they just waited a year they coulda had a super high draft pick! CP3 isn’t worth that much. They shoulda just not signed DJordan and traded for D12 instead! I’m beside myself. This is craziness. They shoulda just played the waiting game. No other team has their assets to make the NO hornets drool. Didn’t even get back a SG.

  • Beavis4President

@BETCATS that would be a great trade for the Clips, they really are in need of a two (shouldn’t of given up Gordon! :) ), would the knicks agree though? maybe for Bledsoe?

  • robb

@Teddy they are not contenders, they are too young, with almost no experience and they have no depth now. CP3′s knee is kinda weak, Billups is 35. They’ll be fun to watch and they’ll probably reach the playoffs but they are not contenders.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Mo Williams and Ryan Gomes for Kirk Hinrich and Marvin Williams?

  • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pawtucket-YMCA-Youth-Basketball-League/278842845500531 Gametimeweezy

Wouldn’t say they’re contenders just yet the bench still looks suspect although I do like Craig Smith.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Yeah, Gordon/Kaman/Aminu might not be a better combo than Martin/Scola/Odom/Dragic right now, but Gordon is a potential franchise player–something those four other guys are not. This trade also sets the Hornets up for a very, very bright future… I thought the LA/Houston deal was the best they were gonna get, but the Hornets really outdid themselves here. This is fantastic.
Gotta give props to Stern where he deserves it–but really, I still think he shouldn’t have tampered with any of this. The Hornets should find an owner ASAP.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Co-sign Gametime on Craig Smith. I almost forgot about him–dude can play. He’s a bit undersized, but he’s perfect filling in for Jordan and Griffin.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Bad deal, EG is nothing but a shooter, Kaman gets hurt all the time and Aminu got drafted to high. Kevin Martin is a better scorer than Eric and Scola/Odom and Dragic are players who can play now. My Lakers got jobbed, but is Chris Paul going to sign a long term contract with the CLippers. Blake can dunk, but seriously. If I was Paul I would demand a trade to the Lakers for his career status in the long run and not let myself go to a team where the owner don’t like blacks and a team that will waste his talent in the long run. Paul is messing up his career and Stern should be ran out of town, because the Lakers bring in money to the league. BOOK IT!!

  • andxxx

I don’t know why people don’t like this trade for the Clippers. Blake Griffin is the most talented player CP3 has ever played with plus Butler and Jordan provide scoring and athleticism. The pick and roll with Griffin and CP3 is gonna be crazy. How do you guard that?

  • robb

They have Jamario Moon too, seriously they are one backup center away from being seriously legit. They are in the playoffs now. Right?

  • Zak

The NBA is over – back to college.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Man Lakers fans are just salty. Period. I respect your pain. You had a deal and it was decent. But this one is better. I thought the Clippers deal was dead because the Hornets wanted the Lakers best assets. The Lakers tried to trade them the Rockets assets and it was a decent deal for the Hornets but it had issues as Neoarin mentioned.
Bottom line with Gordon the Hornets get a young stud. They get a decent center with a poor poor injury history. And they get picks. It is a better deal long term worse short term.
    too bad for the lakers.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I am very very salty, Cuban didn’t complain about Odom trade, nobody complaining about Paul trade to the lowly overrated Blake dunking Clippers, where he will regret allowing this move in the future. Blake is one akward dunk away from ending his season or career, the way he is always trying to dunk and land on the ground differently. Chis Paul from North Carolina. I honestly feel Clippers giving up Eric Gordon was dumb and the 1st round pick. The 1st round pick can be a young guard. Clippers were smarter, building a team instead of sending assests for one player who WILL REGRET HIS LIFE if he signs a long term deal, which I think he agreed to, to do the trade. Paul wanted out of NO so bad he took a ride to Clipperland. Bad Move

  • Spades

Why are people so high on Paul? He’s got a terrible medical history and he’s no longer the top PG.

Cosign omphalos. Stern has done very well by the Hornets with this. This deal SH*TS all over the lakers one from a great height imo. It has the potential to set that franchise up for a chip in 3 or 4 seasons. Some of these Stern haters are like the Kobe or Lebron haters, completely irrational. Im not a fan of Sterns but he did good here. The Clips finally get a legit superstar plus have one in the makin in BGriff and it comes in a season where the Lakeshow looks like falling off bigtime unless they make a big move.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com OTB

Gonna miss Eric Gordon on that squad. He’s more valuable than people think.

  • http://www.t-mac.com/tmac/index unf*ckwitable

    @Spades, shut yo mouth clown.

  • Allenp

Paul has a GREAT scene injury history. He has played in 78the or more games in four of his six seasons. He had the injury on a freak accident crashing into a chair and he played 80with games his first year back from that. He has only played fewer than 60the games once.
    He is not injury prone.

  • Allenp

Chris Paul has played 78 games or more four of his six years.
The other two years he played like 65 and 45.
He played 80 last year coming off a serious injury.

There were a lot of games where he seemed to passive for a supposed “superstar”. Derrick Rose and DW trucked him in head-to-head matchups.

  • short

Surprise surprise. A Rose slurper hating on a pg who’s flat out better at the position. Rose has scoring over CP, but even with that CP scores more efficiently.

  • Shane NZ

It sucks that they lost Eric Gordon in the deal for Chris Paul. I felt the last proposal the cips where giving up too much and was hoping Eric Gordon would stay and they would get rid of either Bledsoe or Mo (preferably Mo). Looks like the backcourt will be Paul and Billups but I think they need to trade for a 2 or 3 for Mo to make it more balanced. That’s my 2 cents anyway…..

  • Mburb321

Billups will play the 2 just like he did for Team USA with D.Rose running point.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

LOL @ Chris Paul being one of the top 5 PGs of all time tho.

@Kap I think we might try to sgn Baron Davis….I know he ain’t that good anymore but he is definitely an upgrade. It would be better to have Derek as a role player.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

Clips gave up a lot. No joke. That’s hefty in every sense of the word.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@BlackPhanton: Baron Davis will bring that beard to MSG if nobody claims him. The interest is said to be mutual. This Knicks team is a perfect match for his style of play. First we had Walt “Clyde” Frazier, then B-Diddy! Something about a bearded point guard in NY that is magical. lol

  • RunNGun

I love the deal! This was definitely the best deal for the Hornets. Though the Clippers gave up a majority of their younger players, the Hornets got younger; which is excellent for the long term. The Clippers don’t need the Minny pick, because having Paul and Blake Show will more than make up for that now. That Minny pick means potentially Harrison Barnes or Perry Jones will be suiting up for the Hornets in the near future unless the Wolves improve immensely this year. CP3 gets to be in a “desirable” big market and gets to toss alley-oops all day to the Blake; should be fun to watch this year.

Baron Davis is hurt and will be out about 3 months. Messed up a disc in his back.

  • neaorin

Both Mo and Chauncey can play the 2 effectively. The big question marks are defense and coaching. Still, you have to like what the Clips have done. And Stern has been vilified by everyone but he actually acted in the best interest of the Hornets there – even if he did go about it the wrong way at first.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

This trade has blown my f***ing mind. Can’t deal.

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

Billups on the 2 is not going to be a liability defensively I think. He has the size and the smarts to guard scorers effectively. Plus, if the Clips’ freakishly athletic big men improved their defensive awareness over the offseason, they are going to plug up that lane pretty well if guys get through. My only worries here are (1) your coach is Vinny del Negro, and (2) your owner is Donald “world’s most awful person” Sterling. Hope I’m wrong.

  • Dingo Rob

    Hornets cleaned up big time.

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

Also If I’m the T-wolves, I’d be pissed as hell that everyone’s treating my draft pick like some sort of golden ticket. Wouldn’t it be funny if they made the playofs just to spite NO? I know it’s a long shot, but stil

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

    co-sign melvin ely 100%.

  • neaorin

@melvin ely: like Bill Simmons said yesterday, the Minny pick may be overrated. Quite a few teams have a worse roster than the Wolves, and Rick Adelman is their coach now. He has a nasty habit of making underdog teams overachieve.

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

@neaorin: exactly, so why is the general consensus here that the Hornets scored big by getting that draft pick? IMO the edge of this deal over the one with the Lakers begins and ends with Eric Gordon. Maybe the Wolves can use that as motivation to get their asses in gear come christmas. Also, I haven’t read Simmons in a while, but I look forward to now. He’s bound to be absolutely ecstatic with this news, being a long-suffering Clips fan.

  • neaorin

well I wasn’t taking it that far – Minny’s pick will certainly be Top 10 and now the Hornets are bad enough that their own pick will probably be Top 5-7 as well. Whereas if they did the Lakers trade, they would have most likely ended up with two picks in the teens, with the Rockets getting Gasol. I was only saying that everyone is acting like that Minny pick could potentially land Barnes or Drummond, when odds are that it won’t.

  • skinnland

It would’ve been a win win situation for both teams if Mo or Chauncey was dealt instead of Aminu. EG can’t play PG for Nola, and Jarett Jack ain’t good enough, so who is legit enough to start on a pretty strong team like the Hornets will be next season.(Why not get mo, baron davis or trade landry for ty lawson?)

  • Leonitu$

GP & SHAWN KEMP PT 2! WHOLE BUNCH OF TIMELESS HIGHLIGHT REELS…..NO RINGS!

  • sumHoopla

Trade that needs to happen, right here: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=cvd2886
Good for the bobcats, they get a solid point for at least two years (really thin front court, but get someone from free agency. Clips get a big that can spread the floor and provide scoring off the bench. If it doesn’t work out they clear even more cap room for next summers free agency when quite a few players will be willing to come and play with the new clips

  • sumHoopla

And the Hornets should consider moving Ariza and Kaman to the Cavs for Jamison and Sessions. Jamison, like Kaman, will come off the books this summer, but better fit at the 4 for this season. You get a great point in Sessions that Cavs don’t need as much with Gibson still there and Irving ready to take over. And the Cavs get Kaman for a year with a chance to sign him in the summer – he gives instant front court scoring and a center for Irving to dump it down to.

  • Justin

Enigmatic, your list of top 5 PG’s is a little off. Gary Payton is not top 5 and imo Zeke isn’t either. I’ll take Nash and Jerry West over both of them any day

The Lakers are the big losers of this offseason. They give away LO to their rivals who just swept them. Dwight seems closer to be staying in Orlando and they see the other LA team landing the Chris Paul and is now the most exciting team in the city and even maybe the best team too.If not yet at least the one that has the brightest future ahead.L

  • pantza

    @JTaylor21
This is not a hypothetically Question: do you really think an athlete from the seventies is compareable with an athlete from the nineties and the present?

I think there is an major difference in the skillsets AND the athleticism. But thats just what I think (read: not know).

plus better knowledge of nutrition etc etc.

Like Bob Cousy said: “it’s a different game now”

  • Chris

Now just because Stern made this trade happen, do we forget about the fact that he shouldn’t have been involved at all? Do we forget about the fact that the Lakers and Rockets got completely screwed over? Do we forget about the fact that the league completely overstepped their role and turned this into a circus? Do we forget about Stern making a complete fool out of Dell Demps, playing him like a puppet?

I get that people are excited about this finally being over, and that we can focus on basketball again, but realise just how messy and ugly this whole process was. Most people were crying outrage when the first deal was nixed, and the clipper trade does not justify that. The league should have never interfered in the first place, it was a totally legit deal where all teams benefitted. I’m disgusted that there will be no consequences to this blatant overstepping of their role. It shows clearly that when the league wants things a certain way, there is no telling what they will do in order to set the agenda to their liking, and it is despicable.

But like with all the other scandals and corruption throughout the years, we talk about it for a while, then accept/forget, and nothing ever changes. When CP throws that first alleyoop to Blake this will all be forgotten, and we will all agree that this was a savvy move by our lovely commissioner.

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

Is the Clippers curse really gone?
    I can’t believe I’m seeing this..

  • RunNGun

@CHRIS Who currently owns the Hornets franchise again?

  • Justin

Took the words out of my mouth RunNGun. I’m not sure how an owner can overstep it’s bounds? I mean, they made the wrong decision at the time for sure but it was well within their right to do so. It’s like Kupchak making a deal and Jerry Buss stepping in and nixing the deal because he didn’t like it. @pantza, just because some were more athletic doesn’t mean they were better. You don’t think Magic could perform at the same level he did if he played today? Larry Bird? I will take guys with fundamentals and high basketball IQ over the better athlete all day/every day.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR6ULRp3Uqk Overtime

Bounds were overstepped because it was Dell Demps job to make a deal. He was given full authority. Everyone understood that. He made a deal, and Stern played him, as said above, like a puppet.
Worse, is if you see Demps comments since yesterday saying how Stern was completely in the right all along.
This guy had to be calmed down from resigning because he was so mad, now somehow he thinks Stern is an angel?
He’s been bullied into saying this rubbish, emasculated from his job, and generally done over.
If you don’t think Stern overstepped his mark on this whole fiasco, there truly is no reasoning with you

  • SKITTLESO5

    Clippers need to put together a trade for O.J. Mayo..you know he is available…..CP/ Grocery list/ Butler/ BGriff/ Jordan …Chaucey / whoever…

  • Chris

Well, legally he did not overstep his bounds, but there is a massive conflict of interest here.. When the NBA bought the team, they said from day one they would not interfear with the Hornets front office and that they would get free reigns to pull any deals off. The original trade would never have been nixed had the team giving away Gasol and Odom been named the Clippers… there’s just no way. Playing hardball now towards the Clips was only to save face and conceal the fact that the small market owners couldn’t stand to see Paul in a Lakers jersey, and that they were afraid for a future deal with Howard as well. This is just unreal. I mean, in Gilberts letter, one of his arguments is that this deal cannot go through, as the Lakers might trade for Howard later on. How can you nix a completely fair deal based on what might happen further down the line? A deal should be made based on facts and the parties/players involved at that moment, not assumptions/fear/jelousy of future events.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR6ULRp3Uqk Overtime

I’ll like this team sure, as I like Blake, and I like CP3, but I’m not going to start calling them my team any time soon.
Objectively, this year a second round exit is their ceiling. But only this year

  • Chris

@ Overtime yeah, what a joke it was to read those comments from Demps. They totally gagged him, that’s for sure.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR6ULRp3Uqk Overtime

@Chris, couldn’t agree more. Maybe he should have resigned

  • shutup

Why would he rsign? so he can look like an A$$ and be unemployed? Stern already did that stuff to him why compound it by losing your job? you think NBA GM jobs are just floating around, he’s showing he can be a company man and im sure he will get compensated for it. The league invested in this team by buying it, why would they save it and then let a deal that wasnt as good as they could get, bring down the future price. Stern maybe an a$$hole but he is a very shrewd business man. Besides the Laker fan base isnt going anywhere, now the Clippers and the Hornets are both viable, isnt that his job as commissioner? To try to make the league as a whole more profitable.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR6ULRp3Uqk Overtime

Being a shrewd business man doesn’t excuse overstepping marks. And considering how quickly guys get fired left right and centre, he probably would be picked up. Which is besides the point anways

  • Kinetik

wow. how can a d*ck like sterling get paul. but i think the clips are getting screwed. no way paul will sign an extension with the clips since he said he wants to win a ring.

  • neaorin

There is no such thing as a business owner “overstepping his bounds” by overruling any decision that anyone else working for that business makes. You never have “full authority” to do anything which impacts the financials of the company you work for, unless you are the owner. You may be empowered to represent the ownership in some areas, and the owner might decide not to interfere with your decision. But he ALWAYS has the right to do so. Just as well, David Stern’s veto could have been overruled by a vote of the owners, and they wouldn’t have overstepped their bounds either.

  • neaorin

just to be clear, in the previous comment, the “business” I am refering to is the Hornets franchise, not the NBA.

clippers go 43-23 with this lineup, they were 28-54 last year?? cp3 gives them 15 more wins.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Did anybody else see Justin put Nash above Gary Payton and Isiah Thomas?
Am I the only one who saw that?
If Isiah Thomas is lower than number 3 on your all-time point guard list, you’re probably doing it wrong.
Nash better than Zeke? That is freaking ridiculous. There is no objective criteria that makes Nash better than Zeke. NONE. Run the stats, check the team success, then compare the games. Isiah Thomas is on a completely different plane from Steve Nash as a player.
And Gary Payton is clearly better than him too.
    Payton isn’t top five though.
I think Walt Frazier, Kidd, and Archibald were better overall.

  • clydesays

Just glad that circus is over. It might not make them a contender, but Paul/Griffin should be a fun combo to watch.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

The problem with Stern’s actions was that he said he and the rest of the owners in the League would be “hands off.” Based on collusion rules, all of the owners in the League could not collectively make decisions about players for the Hornets. And Stern as a representative of the owners was in the same bind. So, to avoid that CLEAR conflict of interest under anti-trust laws and the collective bargaining agreement, Stern appointed someone to oversee the Hornets separate from his office.
That person approved the Lakers deal. In retrospect, that was not best deal, but in order for Stern to veto it, he had to renege on his word, and interject himself into a situation that needed to stay out of to avoid conflicts of interest. In addition, the fact that he made this decision after receiving a complaint from another owner who argued that ALL owners should be making roster decisions for the Hornets made things even worse.
In the end, the Lakers deal would have allowed the Hornets to continue to be a playoff team right now, while the Clippers deal gives them more future potential. How you rebuild depends entirely on your philosophy.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Man the Hornets won 46 games last year with Chris Paul having his worst scoring season ever, and with the second best player being David West.
He’s two years removed from injury now, playing with the most athletic big man tandem in the League, and two great mid range shooters with a decent bench.
If they don’t win 50+ games I will be shocked.
Y’all really, REALLY, do not appreciate how good Chris Paul is.

  • bike

At his peak, Paul was putting up not only All Star worthy numbers; his player efficiency rating was right up there with the best of all time. He seemed to be holding back last year during the regular season but he put the Lakers through the wringer during the playoffs. But CP is missing a significant amount of cartilage in his knee and that bone on bone contact will take its toll over time.
And to Stern’s credit, he made the Hornets as attractive as possible to whomever buys the team.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

I never said that was MY top 5 list.
Just threw some names out there I think would be ahead of Chris Paul as of right now.
    And Jerry West?
He played PG? Not sure about that one.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Chris Sheridan saying the Clippers not only won’t make the playoffs but will be worse than the Jazz is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read from a “professional” basketball analyst/journalist. Ever.

  • Ali

Don’t like it. In no way shape or form does this make the Clippers a contender in the West. Stern is a MFer. These guys pulling the trigger on these trades are MFers. Is there any thought, I’m talking common sense put into these trades. I understand the shi* is overall money and fan driven, but damn!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Man, y’all don’t appreciate Chris Paul. This is clear.
I’m on team Deron Williams, but I watched Chris Paul last year. Dude is crazy.
    HE MADE AARON GRAY RESPECTABLE.
Do you y’all realize how much talent that took? He led the Hornets to 46 wins. Do y’all realize what their rotation was last year?
You’re telling me that a team with Chris Paul, Blake, Jordan, Chauncey, Mo, Caron, Gomes and Eric Bledsoe can’t make some noise? They could use another decent big, and another wing, but they are a good squad. They would have been a good squad without Paul, but with him they’ve added the best or second best point guard in the League. I don’t think y’all appreciate how much easier he makes the game for people, but you will. Yes you will.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR6ULRp3Uqk Overtime

@AllenP, nah man, I caught that too. But couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it, so assumed I was mis-reading.
I’m actually a Nash fan, and would put him higher than most. But I still wouldn’t put him in the Top 5, ever.
I also have a hard choice picking between Kidd and Payton, but thinking about it Kidd does take it.

Also, I don’t see the Clips at 50 wins. I see your points, and they’re valid. Definitely could happen, I just don’t see it coming together this first year. Need more depth in the front court, abit more experience and to hope no-one major misses time. They get 40-45 though.
(I also don’t see them going past 2nd round in first year)

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Clippers are still what, $14M UNDER the cap? Yeah, $14Million dollars underneath the salary cap. They could trade Eric Bledsoe straight up for Andre Iguodala (not saying it’s worth it, but it’s legal). They can make another huge addition if they find the right move.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

And They will be even further under the cap next summer when Chauncey and Foye come off the books..
If Dwight leaves Orlando, they can actually create a super team! lol. That would be classic man. Just classic.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I read the Clippers have entered the Jamal Crawford derby. Between them and the Knicks.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I thought he was signing with Portland. I don’t know about Crawford man. But, off the bench, with Mo and Gomes and Bledsoe, he would be a good signing. Too bad the mavs traded Corey Brewer for a second rounder already. That would have been a good pick up too.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Nick Young appears to still be available. Clippers need to get on that.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I think the Wiz will match any offer for Young. But I would not at all be opposed to him landing with the clips. He would be a 16-18PPG guy there, and he would fill in the scoring void when things get stale. — I am not really a big fan of Crawford in terms of helping a team with a SG hole, but I do think he’s the best scorer off the bench in the league and would serve a title contender like a non-defense playing version of Manu.

  • Ali

Letter to Chris Paul… The Clippers are not a championship team. They are more that one all-star pg (You) away from building a championship team. You will be yet another great player in what seems to be a never ending line of great players to play second fiddle to the The Lakers in L.A. Yes you and Blake will have great highlights, but it will be a far reach for you making the playoffs and being a serious contender for a championship. Look at the Clips history, the truth hurts sometimes but somebody has gotta put it out there.

  • http://www.slamonline.com aman from arkansas

Does this mean a Chris Paul cover on your season preview and it would be crazy if Jamal Crawford sign with the Clippers now.

  • feez_22

did david stern just bend over the lakers? AGAINNNN? yes… the mofo did. The clippers should trade mo williams/billups for a SG honestly… if they still have eric bledsoe do u really want billups playing backup PG or even SG (which is asinine there is no way that billups could play SG no way).

  • feez_22

by the way… people can say that the clips gave up too much. the fact remains though that they finally have an established legit superstar. they used to have elton which was cool but he was never a #1 option type of guy. CP is that guy. i mean imagine the growth blake and deandre will have with 1 of the best distributing PG’s in the game… he can run the fastbreak better than most guards (rondo/nash are comparable), he can shoot as good as the best guards, defend well… he is going to change that whole culture down there. I mean listen 2 allenp guys. Chris wasn’t on his game scoring wise last yr. he shot 25% in like a 10 game stretch and the hornets STILL won 46. This clipper team is by far more talented than that hornet team and more talented almost in every way. maybe not rebounding wise but they have the defensive potential. this is going to be crazy. I don’t know if the clips can make crazy noise this yr but next yr? they will be contenders in 2012-2013. easily.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

In my opinion, the top tier teams in the West have to be Memphis, Dallas and OKC.
    Second tier, Lakers, Spurs, Clippers.
Potential playoff teams, Blazers, Warriors, Suns.
Chris Paul should recognize that he’s joining a team that’s not at the very top talent wise, but is still very close, and could make a leap based on player performance and upcoming signings.
The Lakers have taken a step backwards with the botched trade, roster aging and, most importantly, the loss of Odom. Anybody who doesn’t believe that is crazy.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Feez
They can’t trade Billups until the end of the year, I think.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

In a normal 82-game season this Clip team wins 50 games easily, not sure how many wins that translates to in a shortened season. Chris Paul is the best PG in the L, his Lakers’ series proved that. Until Deron gets back to his best and Rose learns to do more than score, it is not even debateable in my opinion. Blake is a best, he will be improving by leaps and bounds this year. Just watch. Barring injury he could go down as a top 3 PF all-time. Just like Johnny Tightpants did for Mailman, Paul will make Blake’s life much easier and just like with the Mailman Blake’s will to improve and take care of that impressive physique of his will make him a all-time great. Barring injury I am completely sure of this. When it is all said and done Blake could be the best PF ever and Paul could be pretty high up the point god list himself.

Yeah. The loss of Odom is an absolute killer. Not only on the court but everyone in the Laker’s locker room has cited him as a leader and great influence off the court.
The only positive it may have is that it might inject some life/wake up the roster finally.
Also, it’s got Kobe p-off, which could be deadly.

Dont underestimate the loss of Shannon Brown either

  • Ali

Do ya’ll watch the same NBA teams and players I do, WTF is going on! It’s the CLIPPERS man! Snap out of it! CP3 and Blake can hold their own shi* down on any given team in the league, but this is a TEAM sport man! Did did any of yall see what happened to MIAMI last season, these indivduals players coming together don’t mean shi*! It’s the entire TEAM you need to win a championship and at least be in contention. I don’t even see that coming from this Clipper team being tossed together Come on ya’ll!

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Allenp; no, I didn’t really catch any Turkish highlights. Job has been killing me these last couple of months, have hardly even checked out SLAM (luckily there is now light at the end of the tunnel, coinciding with the start of the NBA season – good times). Sounds good with his jumper, you know that I am in your corner regarding the best PG when Deron is firing on all cylinders. But until I see that happening on the regular, the crown is with Paul based on his play versus the Fakers. Btw I am completely sure that Dwight is Brooklyn bound, so I think we can look forward to some great ‘best tandem’ discussions between Paul/Blake and Deron/Dwight the next couple of years.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

The Clippers have Caron Butler and Chauncey Billups. Along with DeAndre Jordan.
    Let me break it down.
The Hornets made the second round of the playoffs and took the Spurs to seven with:
Chris Paul, David West, Tyson Chandler, Peja, Jannero Pargo and some other randoms playing big minutes. Julian Wright was involved.
Chris Paul now has Blake Griffin, Caron Butler, DeAndre Jordan, Mo Williams, Chauncey Billups, Eric Bledsoe and Ryan Gomes.
That’s a talent upgrade. They will be a second round out unless things go horribly wrong this year.

Too little credit for the butler signing imo. He’s a guy who plays great d, can blend in or can easily create his own shot and get 20. I believe he’s in a league with prince and iggy and his signing is huge for the Clips.
They are one good longe range shooting SG away from being a complete team. Too bad they gave up gordon, but a mayo or even a fields will round this team out.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Ty Lawson is their PG. — And they are paper thin. They went from the deepest bench in the league to one of the shallowest. I can’t see Denver making the playoffs.

  • http://nba.com GP23

    Well, where do I start??
Ok… so, to be honest, I wish Chris Paul went to the Lakers, but there you go, it didn’t pan out that way. I still think the Clippers should go for a decent SG, and no.. Billups can’t play there regularly.
$14,000,000 under the cap, they must get somebody.
Top 5 Point Guards of all time:
    1. Magic
    2. Stockton
    3. Oscar
    4. Thomas
    5. Kidd
    Honorable mentions- Payton and Nash

  • http://nbasobrietystrike.blogspot.com/ CoolWhip

“I’m excited for Vinny Del Negro’s point guard tutelage” – Paul did not necessarily add.
It’s funny to see the Clips stockpiled with point guards who are all better than Del Negro was. Look for the Clips to make some moves. They are seriously lacking depth.
Notice how Paul is unanimously become the best PG in the NBA? As recently as last year it was him Deron neck/neck and now that Paul’s being trade he’s a “transcendent” talent.

  • http://leipzig-eagles.de/ Speedy

The only position that is weak on the Clipps roster is the coaching position.
Chris Paul will show everybody what he is capable of when given the right material.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

They’re shooting guard position is weak. Billups is passable, but he’s not an advantage or anything like that.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Where is Randy Foye??

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    He is on the bench.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Why? You saying he is no good? I think he and Billups are equal in terms of playing the SG position. He is pretty decent player imo. He should get over 25 mins per game if he’s not injured.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

He isn’t really good enough to be the starting SG on a playoff team. So I consider him a weakness.

  • feez_22

oh ya my bad about the billups thing. then trade mo/bledsoe. they really need a SG

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I think Foye combo-ing with Billups is a passable shooting guard line up. Is Gomes pretty much exclusively a SF? Clips are going to be real solid that’s for sure.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Gomes more of a SF/PF – He came in the league as a PF but showed signs of shooting ability and is a terrible post defender. — Wouldn’t be surprised if he gets shipped out with Mo Williams though.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Got it. Here’s how desperate Lakers fans are right now… Give us Mo.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

If only y’all had a trade asset not named Pau or Andrew. — Don’t rule out Dwight, those two are a better trade package then what New Jersey would be giving up. If you think about how (un)valuable the draft picks from New Jersey will be after more than half a season of Dwight and Deron.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

First time you’ve ever made me feel more confident about the Lakers ever haha. So whats the deal with Dwight? Magic say he’s off the market, but so was Paul technically right? Lakers would need to get two post players back. It maybe would have to be a 3 team deal?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

What teams/agents portray to the media is usually a tool to create/get leverage from my experience reading rumors and then seeing what happens. I think Orlando is still talking to New Jersey, LA, & Houston about possible Dwight moves. More than likely he gets moved to LA in a 3-team trade sometime around the deadline. My biggest concern, (if I were a Lakers fan) would be Andrew Bynum getting hurt before that happens. Because there is no way Orlando trades for a hurt Andrew Bynum.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Well this is also the first time i think me and you have had a discussion about the Lakers actual team, rather than there potential or what each of us thinks they will accomplish or have accomplished.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

    lol true^^

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Good to know they are still in the hunt. I was fine with the team we had, but trading away my second favorite Laker for… What did we trade him for again lol. I know he had to leave, but unless they get Dwight, that’s a stupid deal to trade Odom and get nothing in return. Bynum better stay healthy. Unfortunately I have said that for a few years now…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

They just gave Odom what he wanted. He came into Kupchaks office the day after the failed NOH trade and said “I want to be traded, preferably to a team like Dallas” so they gave him what they wanted. They called it a salary dump but really it only gave them a $8.9M trade exception, it didn’t get them below the luxury tax or anything like that. So basically they made the trade so that they could include Bynum & Gasol too take back Howard, Turkoglu, and Ryan Anderson (or someone similar) if they can’t find a 3rd team — Pretty awkward trade situation.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Does anyone else think the Lakers basically tearing the Lakers apart and moving every piece bar Kobe is somewhat…. whats the word… disrespectful? Gasol, Bynum Odom… they all gave everything they could to the Lakers as an organisation… playing through injury…out of position….under the heavy media scrutiny… I wish for all the success in Dallas for Odom, playing with Dirk and Jason Kidd and Vince is going to be fun for him and to think that if Bynum and Gasol get to the east coast then they both have real chances to be all stars again… to think that they get into a better offensive situation in Orlando!? : )

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I’m just not a fan of the process of having to move players when it has negative connotations. But i understand the need for it; some players want out – some want to get closer to home, others want the money/fame/a starting spot, guys get ‘burnt’ by management and “the business side of things” and want to be moved to a new team… there are a lot of layers involved no doubt. In any event…let’s go Suns! Also: The off season moves here have COMPLETELY given a chance for the Heat to go into hiding and start the season with a better impression.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujL1Ur9dXqE&feature=related nbk

If the Lakers don’t do something smart soon, I think they are screwed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pawtucket-YMCA-Youth-Basketball-League/278842845500531 Gametimeweezy

Honorably mention Rod Strickland and God Shammgod …just cuz

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I would co-sign nbk if that didn’t mean co-signing my death. jp, But I am feeling quite apprehensive these days

  • http://Barondavisisfat.youaretoo nbk

    Lol

  • http://Barondavisisfat.youaretoo nbk

They could Sign Gilbert Arenas….but then your PG defense amazingly enough would take a step back.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

So true. So true. lol. I hope they just grab whoever now. Gil could be allot better. Even a Gil that puts up a semi- efficient 15 and 6 would be great. The post seems thin even with Pau and Bynum (we know history, someones going down at some point.) Wonder if Character and Ebanks are any better. They were decent rooks. They just got no playtime at all.

  • http://slamonline Brion

That Laker organization is sneaky. They always find a way to pull of a steal in the 25th hour. Howard still to L.A.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

So what’s the over/ under on how many weeks before LakeShow changes his name to LobCity?
Just kidding, dude. Don’t go all emo on me…

  • http://Barondavisisfat.youaretoo nbk

I think they do pull somethin out. I won’t like their depth when they do though. GivIng Lamar away for nothing really hurt.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Man, common Enig, that’s IAMGREENFOREVER that flips to whoever is doing better whenever things get a little bleak. Laker and Sonic for life! lol. Yeah, nothing is really going to make me forget about the Lamar trade. there goes the bench. I don’t even like Shannon Brown, but that hurts too as of right now.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

so we all agree that this clippers team will go pretty deep into the playoffs right?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I wouldn’t be surprised to see them knocked off in the first round. Also wouldn’t be surprised if they got to west finals. We don’t know enough about the team yet. Looks as if they will be quite good and have the talent for a deep playoff run though.

  • Spades

Rose just flat-out wins more. He actually hurt himself by winning too much. Those two 41-win seasons ruined his team’s chance of drafting him help. Boozer and Noah were out for long stretches of last season, and Rose still willed them to wins. How is Rose’s lineup w/o Noah and Boozer any better than NOLA’s? Paul may be a more traditional PG but Rose has surpassed him in the “best leader” category. Also, Rose doesn’t concern himself with assembling super teams or jumping ship when things go wrong.

  • Spades

Thomas>Stockton. Stockton may have the stats but he’s not the leader or winner that Thomas was. It’s not even close. You don’t beat Jordan, Magic and Bird without being legendary. People’s views of him are blurred by his deficiencies as a GM. Forget that. Thomas and Dumars SHUT DOWN Jordan and the Bulls for 3 straight years until he finally usurped their EC reign. Give props to Zeke.

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.
  • short

This ‘Justin’ cat very intentionally put Nash and West above Zeke and Payton, and it wasn’t all basketball related. Not even joking, pay attention to his comments. This isn’t the 1st time he’s said outlandish ish to make a similar point.

  • short

Paul led a super weak Hornets team against the former defending champs and almost pulled it off. He did it w/o being fully healed, in a much stronger conference. I’d still take him over Rose.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pawtucket-YMCA-Youth-Basketball-League/278842845500531 Gametimeweezy

Gotta show Bob Cousy some love too that old bandit…

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@FakeShow If anyone knows what the word LOYALTY means, it’s me. I’m not some front runner. I’m a NEW YORKER and a KNICKS FAN. The truth is, most of those fans who “flip to whoever is doing better whenever things get a little bleak” are in fact your fellow Laker “fans” you’ve been seeing during the good times.

  • shutup

@allenp you left out stockton, he gotta be top 3 if not fighting for #1. i put magic and thomas ahead of him only because of chips. but thats the lowest spot i would put him.

  • JoeMaMa

Comparing players from different era is like comparing apples from medieval Europe and oranges from feudal Japan. Everything’s different…even the position itself changed over time. So the question boils down to: who was the most dominant, the best of his time?

  • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pawtucket-YMCA-Youth-Basketball-League/278842845500531 Gametimeweezy

Pistol Pete ran the point too that wiley old tycoon…

  • BBaller

New story please( one that doesn’t involve Howard or CP3)!!!!!!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

BBaller… what a new story?… No way… this is way better than talking about LeBron..

  • Justin

Whoaaa, take it easy there Mr. Nobody’s Opinion But Yours Counts AllenP. I never said Nash was top 5 either. I said I’d take him over Payton and Zeke. Big difference. And yes that means neither of them is in my top 6. I don’t think you really appreciate what Nash did for his teams in his prime and what he still does for them now. Once again, shockingly, you people put so much emphasis on a player’s individual stats to compare to others. How about checking out how their teams did without them when they were injured, or how other individual players’ stats went way down because of it. Bottom line is, he has back to back MVP’s on his resume while Payton and Zeke don’t have any. I don’t want to hear any crap about how those guys had Jordan, Magic, Larry, and then Barkley and Malone to go against either. Nash had Shaq, Duncan, Kobe, and KG to go against as well. Naturally you all will say he didn’t deserve it for whatever reason but what you guys think doesn’t matter. It’s what the people that saw everyone play everyday thinks and they think he won. It can be argued he should have won 3 in a row because his stats and team were actually better than his previous two years but people weren’t going to put him in Larry Bird/Kareem territory. What exactly did Gary Payton do better than Nash anyway, other than defense and rebound? Was he a better shooter? No. Free throw shooter? No. Ran the offense better, played pick and roll better, ran the break better, passed better…? The answer is also no, no, no, and a resounding no. It’s amazing how reluctant people are to give a short little white guy his credit but that’s no surprise in these parts either.

  • Justin

Also, there is another Justin that posts on here. I’ll start using my last initial after this to discern the difference for you so we can see what “outlandish ish” you guys are talking about.
Spades, saying Thomas and Dumars shut down Jordan might be one of the more outlandish things I’ve seen someone say on here, especially the 89-90 series. Jordan averaged 36 in that series. Man, I’d hate to get shut down like that. They played him the toughest at that time but shut down? Hardly

  • bt

I think everyone is missing the main benefit of this trade and the Billups signing. If they finally make the playoffs they wont have to give Mo Williams – the guy who hasn’t shown up for a playoff game in his life – any minutes so they might have a shot at winning a series.

  • bt

and my all time point guard rankings: (excluding Cousy because I haven’t seen enough of him to have any idea where to put him)
    1) Magic – 5 championships and incredible offence overrides poor defence
    2) Oscar – Way ahead of his time
    3) Zeke – Over stockton because his lack of longetivity is offset by his leadership and abiliity to take over and win big games
    4) Stockton
    5) Nash – Noone has turned chicken s**t into chicken sald like he does
    6) Payton – Best defensive point guard of all time

  • Justin

bt, I like your top 5 although Jason Kidd needs to be there. I’d probably put Stockton over Zeke. Longevity means something when you’re still playing at a high level at an older age like he was, and like Nash is. West is 4th, Nash and Zeke can battle for 5th and 6th and MAYBE Payton at 7th.

  • SKITTLESO5

West was a shooting guard Justin so doesnt apply.Tiny Archibald should be ahead of Nash and Payton as should Walt Frasier.

  • Justin

It’s weird. Depending on which site you go to, they have him as a shooting guard or a point guard, and some just guard. Fair enough, take him out of the point guard race. Archibald is not ahead of Nash and Frasier is debatable too.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Alf

random sidebar question because it just occurred to me:
Between DeAndre Jordan vs. Javale McGee (spelling) who’d you rather take at the 5?

  • Colt6

Stockton did not win any championships. I have no respect for a point guard who can’t win the big one. Generals win. JKidd just did. I like the list. Magic, Big O, COUSY, Zeke, JKidd, Payton. CP3 is on the rise but until he wins a title his legacy will be forever in question.

  • SKITTLESO5

    archibald is ahead of nash

  • Justin

Colt, using championships as a sole factor in a player’s legacy is just plain dumb. He had the misfortune of playing in the Bird/Magic era in the 80′s and the Jordan era from then on. As did Ewing, Barkley, Malone, Drexler and a lot of guys. Saying you have no respect for him because of that is completely ridiculous. Payton got his ring but it wasn’t exactly like he was a main contributor to that Heat team. In his prime he apparently couldn’t get it done either

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

    1. Magic
    2. Stockton
    3. Zeke
    4. Oscar
    5. Kidd
Where’s nbk, Allen and Enig to add some sanity?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Caboose, if you were building a franchise and have the chance to build around either a prime John Stockton or a prime Isiah Thomas, who are you selecting?

  • Allenp

Nash plays no defense. None. He only succeeded in an uptempo style. And he was only very good for a huge chunk of his career becoming great in his dotage.
Isiah was second only to Magic his whole career and beat Magic Bird and Jordan the Holy Trinity of basketball. Nash has never “led” his team to the Finals and Mavs have done better since he left.
No serious basketball person sweets would put Nash over Isiah. Stockton is debatable though. Frazier kills Nash. Payton kills Nash. So does Tiny. Nash had one of the most talentedracially teams of this era and never got to the Finals because his team never played consistent defense. Just like him.

  • Allenp

The phone added racially on its own.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Sorry, but Nash contends for best shooter and passer among all points, ever. He’s great at taking charges but overall doesn’t play acceptable defence, although it should be said that rule changes make it much harder to play defence at the point than it was in Payton’s time. My list of points: 1) Magic, 2) Oscar, 3) Stockton, 4) Isaiah, 5) Kidd, although I consider 4 and 5 to be interchangeable. Payton and Nash both compete for the #6 spot; not sure who gets it. Either way I think Paul (if he stays healthy) and Rose will surpass them both in a few years.

  • Allenp

I can’t believe y’all are sleeping on Frazier like this. Dude was Payton before Payton except a better passer. Nash is the ninth or tenth best point depending on how you feel about Cousy.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Allenp, look at these stats by Frazier versus the Lakers in game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals: 36 points, 19 assists, 7 rebounds. Clyde was a KILLER.

  • http://Barondavisisfat.youaretoo nbk

Magic, Isiah, Oscar, Walt, Stockton – It’s really hard for me to put Stockton above Kidd. – Caboose, I had a playoff game and chiropractors appointment during this crazy discussion, and reading through the comments I’m kinda happy I missed it.

  • http://Barondavisisfat.youaretoo nbk

Frazier is the only PG to win a title as his teams true 1st option.

  • Allenp

Nah Isiah was the first option.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@nbk: So how did your playoff game on NBA 2K12 go?

  • http://Barondavisisfat.youaretoo nbk

Well I had this argument with shutup and he was arguing against Isiah as the first option because it was only the end of games that Isiah became “the first option” the other parts of the game the Pistons ran plays for Adrian Dantly, Vinnie Johnson. – so to avoid that argument again I said true first option about Frazier. Cuz in 73 he was the first option all game long for that Knicks team.
