New Jersey Nets Have a New, Temporary Logo and Slogan

The Nets’ crack marketing staff has come up with yet another brilliant (read: highly questionable) idea. They’re going to bolt from Jersey and want to pay tribute to their legacy there, while reminding everyone of how pumped they are about their move to Brooklyn next season. From the NY Times: ” The logo is actually pretty snappy. In the center is a tri-color basketball with the Nets name written in 1970’s era script, an homage to the team’s A.B.A. past. The number 35 in the middle. Below are the years 1977 and 2012, bookends to the team’s often-withered years in the Garden State. A tiny outline of the state is at the bottom in white. It’s an open question is whether true blue Nets fans in New Jersey will want to shell out $20, $30 or more for merchandise produced by a team that is leaving town in the spring. The Nets, however, feel that it is the right thing to do. ‘It will be our farewell moniker,’ said Fred Mangione, the team’s chief marketing officer. ‘As we go out, we want to go out the right way.’ The team got league approval to put the logo on the players’ uniforms. It will also be on the court at Prudential Center and, of course, on a blizzard of merchandise. On opening night, the logo will appear on a magnetic team schedule and Deron Williams No. 8 replica Nets jersey that fans will receive. At each home game, the team will have a video tribute to the highlights during the team’s years in New Jersey. More curious is the team’s new tagline, ‘Jersey Strong Brooklyn Ready.’ It covers all the geographic bases. But what is a fan in New Jersey supposed to make of it? That they should be strong because their team is heading to Brooklyn? That they were strong for following the team all these years? They will be stronger once the team is in Brooklyn? These are epistemoligical questions for the basketball gods to answer.”

Another commenter on another site thinks that this logo ‘has too much going on’…which I agree with on some levels. Ill start with the things I like- the retro feel of it all…the classic Nets color scheme..a blending of the new type with the cursive is a nice counterpoint. I would thin out the lines of the ball a bit…it begins to encroach on the negative space around the cursive nets logo. The flags on the bottom are excessive….the years active could definitely be placed within the ‘shield’ portion of the logo. Overall- a good feel to it..hopefully this design carries over with their move to Brooklyn.

Also- if you remove the bottom flags…it makes the fact that theres a basketball inset within the logo alot more obvious. I had to cover the flags for someone to realize that was a basketball. So thats something I would change.

I like the logo and the slogan. Fact is, the team is leaving. Jersey fans just have to suck it up. They could just bounce without the tribute so why would the Jersey fans be upset with the gesture?

As a long time Nets fan from Jersey, I’m just happy the team is acknowledging their time in the state. Ever since Ratner bought the team in ’04 “NJ” started disappearing. First it was the NJ secondary logo, then the grey “New Jersey” alternates were replaced with the red “Nets” unis. Than the blue away “New Jersey” unis were replaced by the red “Nets” unis. The baseline stopped reading “New Jersey Nets Basketball” and became “Nets Basketball”. The YES Network started using “NETS” on their scoreboard while the opposing teams’ read NYK, BOS, CHI etc. The only team in the league whose shooting shirts didn’t include the team’s location on them “Nets Basketball”. The team has remained in NJ for 7 years while the Brooklyn arena was built, and they completely ignored any association New Jersey. So, like I said, for all the NJ fans that stuck with this team through the good times (Kidd) and the bad (everything else) this is a welcome acknowledgement of New Jersey. Especially if they expect to get us to travel to BK to pay 4x as much for tickets.

as a graphic designer, this looks horrible as a logo

  • Stainless

looks like something a high school school would have.

Riggs, word. Mismatch of fonts, too much emphasis on the “35″, messy flags, illegible type, and the NJ state outline is just sad.

as a viewer, this looks pretty good.

  • johnnyyyy

dang, how many teams in the nba now have a color scheme of red white and blue?

  • Waggle

New logo, new slogan, same sh!tty team.

  • chingy

That outline of the state is turrible.

  • Dirtybird

Riggs, have you been on the Chris Creamer logo forum? Just recommending if you haven’t.

The logo should’ve been a basketball blocking up the Holland Tunnel.

Ive decided to choose a team to support since Tmac is done. I think i might jump onboard the Brooklyn Nets since I dont like any of the good teams going round. BK for life son.

    Dont like that logo though.

  • Fred33

theres nothing classy about new jersey, so who gives a damn

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

Surely New Jersey fans can just catch a train to Brooklyn for the games and not cry too much about it, right? If Wilt could commute from NYC to Philly via train for games, surely Nets fans can do the same. It’s not like a move from Seattle to Oklahoma City…

  • Timshel

    It’s a faster commute to a Knicks game…

  • ab40

very euro style logo and slogan, if they could they would probably name the team brookly 2012 for this one year. Pochorov haha doing his thing out there.

  • #6marjons

i like it nice overall idea, the state at the bottom looks like someones dropped tipp-ex on it and the outline of the ball is a bit chunky but the slogan really good and tasteful. not sure what the new jersians will make of it but the thought is there.

  • Soon2B_X_NJ_Nets_Fan

Too me it looks like a R.I.P NJ Nets logo… i think the move to BK blows and i hope it FAILS lol.. theres only room for one team in NYC anyway. oh well, i already jumped on the south florida bandwagon…

    duces!
