Norris Cole Doesn’t Want to Take Mario Chalmers’ Starting Spot

Rookie point guard Norris Cole had his coming out party last night against the Boston Celtics, but despite the electric performance, Cole says that he’s not ready to supplant Mario Chalmers in the Miami Heat’s starting lineup. Not yet, anyway. From the Miami Herald: “I asked Norris after the game if he’s better suited at coming off the bench right now than starting. (Because, you know, we’re all thinking the same thing, ‘When is this kid going to send Mario Chalmers back to the bench?’) Cole got a little testy that I would even indirectly imply such a thing. ‘Yes, I think it does suit me right now,’ Cole said of his reserve role. ‘I’m stilling learning, I still can get better and this is what’s best for the team.’ When asked why Chalmers wasn’t in the game at the end, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said, wryly: ‘Did you watch the last six minutes?’ Spoelstra collected himself: ‘It wasn’t at all any kind of indictment on Rio. He came back after struggling at the beginning of the third quarter and he did settle down and make some plays. So, that was good to see him show some resolve and some toughness after going through a tough stretch.’”

I think it would be a knee jerk reaction to throw Cole into the starting lineup this early. Holy sh*t give him time. He scored 20 points, he didn’t light the world on fire. This is getting out of hand, he’s played TWO GAMES!!

chill out nbk ! Nobody ‘s starting him yet & nothin’ s getting out of hand. Is it your time of the month or what dude? Cole had a solid game & Mario had 4 turnovers in 4 possesions back to back in the 3rd i think. It’s good when you have players fighting for starting spots , it brings out the best in them & it looks like Cole is hungry + i think when he hit that top of the key 2 after the fakeout when it was only 3points in it was a great move coz i suspect Mario would have thrown up the long trey instead of taking it in. Great pickup for Miami. I like this guy. Go Heat !!

LeBron James left Cleveland and Norris Cole took his talents to South Beach. I don’t mean to label him a legend or hall of famer just yet but this kid is… NUTS!! He’s a frickin’ BEAST!! Norris Cole can play! Miami got such a steal when they got him. I’m pretty sure if he keeps playing like this, he will take “Rio’s” spot because he just seems like a better player now. I hope he can progress and take his rightful spot. If I were a teammate, I’ll be honest, I’d trust Norris (the ROOKIE) more than Mario. I think LeBron and Dwayne think the same thing. Their body language is so readable it’s not even funny.
My only request for this guy is to get better. He’s REALLY fun to watch.

Cole gives them even more speed, but no way he should start, not this season at least.

Norris Ice Cole should start. Y’all crazy if you can’t see that. Sincerely, Screamin A. Smith

obviously you haven’t been reading the crazy sh*t people have been saying AQ. I fully expect Norris Cole to be the starting PG for Miami at some point. Just not yet. People are talking about him winning ROY, and all sorts of other nonsense (at this point).

Cole was showing Lebron how to finish a 4th qtr. Lebron started looking for a rookie to score crucial points during the stretch run. BOOK IT!!

It is early and he has only played two games but there are things that Norris Cole brings, speed and athleticism, that Chalmers will NEVER bring to the table. When Miami was blowing the Celts out it was when Cole was in there forcing the tempo and attacking on makes and misses. Chalmers just doesn’t do that, he slows them down. Chalmers helps in the halfcourt because he can make threes so it’s hard to help off of him, but if Cole can be consistent with his jumper, I see no reason why he shouldn’t become the starter at some point this season. Why wait? It’d be just like last year when Spo had the corpse formally known as Mike Bibby out there starting and being ineffective, but waited until game 5 of the Finals to finally start Chalmers.

Well as of two games in he is the best rookie out there, granted two games doesnt make a season, and I dont expect his productivity to remain as high, and I dont see him winning ROY but as long as Rubio doesnt win it, i really dont care. I’m glad Miami has an X-factor now, someone to maybe pick up the slack when they have their lulls which was on full exhibit last night in the third and beginning the fourth. Chalmers just has to play smarter and its his spot to lose, but competition is good for making players better, they say only steel can sharpen steel.

  • Maurice Bobb

Seriously, Miami straight up WON with this Norris Cole kid. Love this guy’s heart. He’s a killer with ice water in his veins. It’s early but you can just see how good this kid’s gonna be

  • LA Huey

What’s wrong with the school of thought that has Cole stay a reserve to allow for some balance scoring off the bench?

  • charliewinning

He’ll be better than Chalmers. That much is true.

  • shuref00t

Chalmers is done. Send that knucklehead back to Alaska!

Chalmers is fast and athletic. He actually is faster than Cole.
He just makes bad decisions regularly. He has all the physical tools, but has issues with the mental ones.

  • http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_history.html Allenp

And some players play better with competition, and other players play worse. Some cats freeze up and start looking over their shoulder when they make a mistake if there is somebody gunning for their spot. I don’t know how Chalmers will handle it.

MIA needs cole’s scoring and aggressiveness off the bench, they already have lots of that on the starting lineup.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

THat’s a good point JT, also Chalmers is a much better defender than Cole. I think that aspect of all of this is being overlooked. Cole is only better than Chalmers half the time, and to be completely honest, it’s not like offense is something their starting unit is in desperate need for.

  • David

Damn Imagine Norris Cole coming off the bench for the Bulls instead of CJ Watson, steal of the draft

  • LA Huey

^But the Bulls were so excited about their “Blind Side” draft pick. Anyone heard of what he’s been doing? Did he make the team? Is he injured?

  • T-Money

allen: chalmers is not faster than cole. it’s not even close. chalmers is actually pretty slow since his multiple high ankle sprains. he used to have some bounce in his rookie year but he hasn’t dunked in years now.

  • Ldub20

let the rook get his feet wet. alot of players are better off the bench even when they can start. maybe cole needs to see the flow of the game first then he can disect (in his mind) what he needs to do. i like this kid. just added him to my fantasy team.

  • @Deknowz

Doesn’t this seem like a repeat of LeBrons Highschool team?

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

LA Huey – Jimmy Butler will be aight. Won’t get much playing time. But that was who the Bulls took with their 30th pick, had nothing to do with the Norris Cole pick.
Nah, the Norris Cole pick that they got from Toronto which it got from Miami which was then traded to Minnesota which was then traded to Miami was traded for Minnesota’s 23rd pick which it got from Houston, Nikola Mirotic, and yes, Bulls are mad excited about him. But he won’t be stateside for 2-3 years.

  • Gametimeweezy

Norris Cole knows his role, for now. Thats actually refreshing to hear him say this. Gotta pay your dues young man. But I can totally see him winning the job sooner rather than later.

  • deezndhaus aka giogolo

Chalmers is still good at halfcourt sets for 3′s and steals. He and dwade are the only 2 so far before james came in that are good at swiping amongst the heat.

  • LA Huey

Thanks for the update, Enig. I knew Cole and Butler picks weren’t related but had no idea Norris’ potential NBA rights were passed around like that. I just remember some sort of swap on draft day.
    Deknowz, it’s eerie.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Chubachuchi

Dude has a solid game. I know its only been 2 games but you can see he is more aggressive than Chalmers, kid’s a fearless slasher. Honestly I think he’s better off the bench though for that 2nd unit boost but don’t get me wrong I think he’s still better than Chalmers.

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

Chalmers is fast and athletic AND faster than Cole? Allenp you’re buggin. C

  • JBroeve

Y’all are all trippin. Its obvious now why Chalmers is the starting point guard. He’s just the scapegoat for the Big 3, when stuff goes wrong, Lebron is always in his face, but he uses that and it motivates him and he’s better because of it. Don’t get me wrong, Cole is good, but there is no way he is better than Chalmers at the point, especially as a starter.
