Report: Celtics Close to Signing David West

According to NBA.com, David West may soon be in Celtic green and white. Wow: “A source briefed on discussions Friday evening said that the Boston Celtics are close to a deal with free agent power forward David West, who has been with the New Orleans Hornets since being drafted in 2003. West, 31, was expected to be one of the top free agents in this year’s class, but he is coming off of a torn ACL suffered late last season in a game against Utah. West has diligently rehabbed his injury in North Carolina last summer, but teams have been slow to make significant offers to him.”

Yahoo! Sports has more details on the deal: “As @Daldridgetnt reports, David West close w/ Celtics. Y! Sources say sides working on a sign-and-trade for a 3-year, $27-29M deal. Celtics likely send Jermaine O’Neal and another player to New Orleans in sign-and-trade, sources said. Hornets would move players elsewhere. David West has desperately wanted to play for a winner, and will take less money to do so in Boston.”

    Goodbye, Brandon Bass.

I don’t like this as a Celtics fan. He’s too old to last beyond the Big 3 era and we already have KG and Bass… not seeing the point.

  • Nathaniel

David Stern will probably tell the Celtics they can’t sign David West. They want to keep the Hornets how they are.

W.o.w. nice moves by Ainge so far, two shooting, brawny PF’s and a center who still plays below his abilities gives them a revamped frontcourt.
Any word on how West recovered from his injury? I’m a fan of Brandon Bass, he was excellent in Dallas, sad to see him leave them, and SVG never gave him enough mins imo.

woow KG off the bench. that will be the first time …. well ever. Kg was the top player and my personnel favorite in the golden age of ball.

  • ripslam

So they’re trading literally the only true center on the roster for another 4? And three years?

  • Allenp

Wonder if folks will hate on this move.

  • Heals

Loved the move when I first heard it. Liked it less when I heard JO was leaving (they still need a C). Liked it even less when I heard 3yrs etc. Despite that, all in all a smooth couple moves by DA with his back against the wall. Dooling, Bass and West (hopefully Redz and Green join in) isn’t too shabby considering what they had to work with. Throw in Moore or Johnson and all of a sudden a squad that was only 6-deep a week ago now looks much more solid…

hopefully they move Jermaine back to Miami…

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

man I didn’t know until I just checked that JO was getting the mid-level.. I thought he was playing for the vet. minimum

  • BRAVO

    Lets go celtics!

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

GET A CENTRE!!!! yes these trades (BBass and DWest) are great but after the trade of KP celtics cant win a championship as much as i hate to say it as a fan of theirs

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

So the Hornets are gutting their team and they want CP to agree to an extension?

  • hushabomb

I honestly thought that DWest would have been included in the trade for CP3.

So the lineup is Rondo, Allen, Pierce, KG, Bass. With Delonte, DWest, Green, Daniels. That’s solid…..

west aint getting paid 28m to come off the bench. they’re going to try and hide KG’s fading athleticism by plugging him at center

  • Reals

I dont even care anymore, santa is real again! christmas has reason haha, amen

  • Louie

This trade doesn’t make the Celtics any better, yes David West is good but mind you he’s coming off a injury. Who’s going to be Celtics center now? KG? smh not good lol.

  • Bimmer

    The C’s are C-less

  • jsmallz

Still some time they are making themselves sold deep in plenty of positions….like ainge heard they need one even from the players…but with a season like this yeas short but only by a couple games in 4 months with teams playing atleast 20 sets of back to back each team will….oh ya some do two sets of back to back to BACK. I say lets keep on building on the seasons depth

  • http://www.slamonline.com aman from arkansas

I wonder are they gonna let David West play center or trade Kevin Garnett.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    Great move Danny boy! lol

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Can KG play center effectively? It’s not like the league is overflowing with super-centers, and his defense is still top notch. Other than Dwight Howard, there really isn’t a high-scoring center left in the league (Chris Kaman comes to mind a few years ago, but the Clips don’t play him anymore).

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

KG is going to get eaten alive by Bynum

  • Heals

Okay Joey, Ticket was also an MVP in his prime, something Bynum will never come close to achieving (I know you’re jus responding to comment above, but KG is on his last legs so if Bynum is everything you LAL fans build him up to be he should win that match-up hands-down). Looks like the deal hit a snag and may not go thru depending on JO. At least the C’s inked Green and now even without the trade their roster is much more stable than it was a week ago…

apparently jjohnson and emoore and more gonna be traded for d west waiting for the cp3 deal to go through
