Report: Derrick Rose’s New Shoe Deal to Pay Him Close to $250 Million

Derrick Rose’s personal wealth continues to swell. According to ESPN, shoe and apparel giant adidas is about to break the bank for the Chicago Bulls’ superstar point guard with a new “lifetime” shoe deal. In fact, it might be several banks: “One industry source insisted to ESPN.com this week that Rose’s new shoe deal with adidas will easily crack nine figures and could legitimately approach the $250 million range — as in $25 million annually over a 10-year span — in what is known in the shoe game as a ‘lifetime’ deal. How can the reigning MVP possibly command those kind of dollars as a shoe endorser? Here’s how: Rose, as it was explained to me, is adidas’ only counter to Kobe Bryant in China. I’m told Rose already outsells LeBron James there.”

I’m the biggest Bulls fan and love DRose with everything I’ve got, but C’MON SON 250 MIL FOR A SHOE DEAL?!

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

    This sucks.
I mean, I’m happy for Rose.
But this means he’ll never sign with Nike or Jordan now.
F*ck it tho, I love to see Rose getting paid like this.
@lexluther – Rose and to a lesser extent Dwight Howard and Josh Smith are all the NBA players that Adidas has. So they can afford to pay him more and they really can’t afford to lose him.
Is this really that much crazier than Nike paying an 18 year old LeBron $90 million before playing an NBA game?

  • Honduran

    ^^^what he said!!

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Well earned but isn’t it kind of funny and sad that they are willing to pay him 250 million dollars to wear a shoe that actually costs 20-30 dollars to make while paying the people who make it 20 cents an hour. Gotta love capitalism.

  • Aikea808

Adidas can recoup that in a month in China. 250M divided by $20 = 12.5M shoes!

  • http://Vangrackstyle@yahoo.com Dallas Stokes

    Money well spent.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

On another note, did y’all know adidas was founded by a former Nazi named Adolf? And his brother founded Puma? His brother was even more of a Nazi, BTW.
And how come Dirk ain’t down with adidas? That’s his countrymen right there.

    ^^^ LOL ^^^

That’s coz Dirks great grandpops was Polish. But he flipped a letter in his name to make it a little german so he could belong. The z was an S. It was tough times back then i guess.

  • gravy

thats not true at all. Nowitzki doesnt sound like a german name one bit, even if you flip 3 letters. just sayin

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

HOT DAMN….250 MILLION just to wear and endorse shoes.

  • Heals

Sooooooowoooopp! Rumble young man rumble. @JT21, yeah funny how that ucked up circle of life works…

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com yada

@enig i mean alot of things were foubnded by “bad ppl” lol but DAMN 250 mill d.rose? englewood I SEE YOU!!!!

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com yada

NO WONDER dwight dont wanna come to chicago

  • charliewinning

From a moral standpoint Nike is no better than adidas. Anyone who believes otherwise is a damn fool.

  • charliewinning

Also, I’m sure the majority of that money is more incentives than guaranteed money. Either way, good for Rose.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Co-sign JTaylor.

  • shtrobi-1

How is that lifetime deal working out for Allen Iverson and Reebok?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Also I don’t even know what shoe Derrick Rose wears. Is it the shoe with the window and Adidas stripes going across it?

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

    Adizero Rose 2.
And while I agree adidas and other shoe companies could definitely pay the people who make the shoes MUCH more but you really can’t fault Rose for that.
Even the $25 million he’d make a year would be just a fraction of the $15 billion or so Adidas makes a year

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

I haven’t seen one nucca rock a pair of Adidas that wasn’t shell tops. Is Rose really selling Adidas like that in Chicago that he got $250 mil?? And damnit, Enig! Why ain’t you tell me about that Adidas-Nazi connection before I did that piece on Jordan sneakers!?

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

    My bad, b.

  • charliewinning

Kobe must not be the only one selling kicks over in China.

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com yada

lol asians loveeeee d.rose. they ask if he is asian all the time

  • hushabomb

At least Rose earned his deal. He made All Star and MVP before his rookie deal is up. LeBron was anointed his deal before setting foot on an NBA court. So more power to him.

@Enigmatic, he was wearing Adidas since AAU and college. And aint that the way that goes now. John Wall is the same with Reebok.

I think that if Rose signs with Nike, he won’t be his own man, he’d be one amongst many in that regard.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

I could see why they’d think he’s Asian. Chinky eyes and sh*t. The original Asiatic Black Man…

  • http://slamonline dan

me and my wife need 10k to put down for a home…….

  • Aizen

@ O: Chinky eyes? Racist, much?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Nazis have a lot to do with modern America. The government basically forced Nazi scientists to work for the US after WWII, and there were tonnes of American investors funding Hitler’s Germany. Ex: The extermination camps wouldn’t have been possible without IBM’s punch-card system, which the Nazis used to keep track of all the Jews/Roma/”invalids.” IBM made a tonne of money selling to Hitler.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Thanks for the Adidas info, Enigmatic.
You know that acronym “All day I dream about sports”? Is that something kids just made up?

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Oh yeah, because most of my life people have asked if I have some kind of Asian in my family because of my “CHINKY eyes.” How would you have me refer to his eyes, Alzen? Slanted? Is that more to your liking? I don’t know where you grew up, Alzen, but where I grew up if you had “chinky eyes” that usually meant they were, well, chinky. Never thought of it as racist, but obviously you grew up in a different culture. “… Chinky eyes, devilish grin/purple Range Rovers/wakin’ up with hangovers, godd*mn, I need my brain sober!” – Nas (Queens Finest).

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Omar: I know it’s used a lot in hip-hop, but “ch*nk” is still a racial slur for Chinese people. I don’t go around saying n**ger in public as if it has no meaning other than “black person,” and I damn sure wouldn’t use it to refer to a physical feature, as in “N*****ish lips” or something stupid like that. Come on, now. If you can’t figure out why people would find that offensive…

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

He must be selling a whole lot of kicks over in China because no one outside of Chicago is anticipating AdiRose release dates.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

btw a lot of Puerto Ricans and Carribean peoples (ie. Jamaicans), do have Chinese blood. Shout out to Patrick Chung, the best Chinese football player in the NFL.

  • charliewinning

Co-Sign Teddy. On the slur and the Carribean Chinese thing. My Grandmother is half-Chinese and she’s Trini.

  • feez_22

… to the people saying at least rose earned the deal and lebron didn’t… guess again. Lebron made nike hundreds of millions of dollars… lebron probably made nike 500% of what they gave him. thats just fact. 250m dollar shoe deal? not gonna hate though. I just want to see the contract adidas gives to dwight.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

@ Teddy, real talk, I’ve NEVER used the word “ch*nk” in my life, but that because I know it’s racial. Yet what can be said when you have, I guess Asian, eyes?! We’ve been saying “chinky eyes” since we was kids. Growing up in Brooklyn my friends came in all races including Chinese and no one’s ever made any fuss about that saying. People always said I had big lips and chinky eyes – it was what it was. I guess because it was just accepted, the connection was never really analyzed. I don’t mean to offend or sound racist, but seriously, look at my background and culture. Half our talk and way of life could be considered racist even though it’s just slang to us. Do people outside the hood get offended when “Indian hair” is said too? Isn’t that just a way of describing a feature?

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com yada

china does have billions of ppl. oh and every race and they mama say n*gga. u dont here ppl walkin around sayin wassup my chink

  • Justin G.

If you’ve been saying “chinky eyes” than you’ve used the word “chink” in your life. feez_22, Adidas isn’t going to give Dwight anything close to Rose because he hasn’t really done anything.

  • Chukaz

That’s way too much money for rose. I’d think that was a good amount if he was with Nike, but for adidas is a bit much. All their shoes suck except for the shell tops. They came out with these shoes that are lighter than the hyperdunks but they were ugly as f*ck. You never see people rocking adidas kicks and that’s a fact. Bron n Kobe must be mad as hell at their agent right about now

  • http://knicks.com Gametimeweezy

O – blah blah blah all u had to say was my bad

  • Yann Blavec

Adolf Dassler wasn’t a Nazi. He just happened to be German and having the same christen name as Ghandi, hum, Hitler.

  • Yann Blavec

Well, ok, adolf dassler was a nazi. the thing is, remember, nike boss Phil Knight was a hippy.

  • http://www.blogspot.com LLC#12

“With the rise of Adolf Hitler in the 1930s, both Dassler brothers joined the Nazi Party” wiki (ever-reliable…) But I imagine at the time they may have been pushed into it or whatever, like the pope was hitler youth but he didn’t have a choice. Anyway, how do shoe deals work with regards to injury? This 250mil locks Rose down for 10 years but what if he has a career-ender in say 3, the whole deal written off?

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

    Way to backtrack, Yann. Lol
@LLC – I’ve seen that on more than just Wikipedia. It should be noted it does seem like he pledged his allegiance to Hitler mostly cause everyone either did that or was sent off to concentration camps back then, but I read his bro was deeply into that ish.
@Teddy – “adidas” the name came about from the founder’s own name. His nickname was Adi so he took the first three letters of both that name and his last name- ADI DASsler.
And y’all lay off my homie O. Some of you way too sensitive bout that race sh*t. I probably belong to the most hated nationality in America in the 21st century – Mexican and Mexican-American (seriously, many people wanna deport us all regardless of where we were born, some openly admit they’d love to harm or kill us) but I can tell the difference between someone being racist and someone either joking around or being uninformed or insensitive about a slur or whatever.
But then again I see way too many “I wanna take my rifle and kill every sp*c I see, man woman and child” comments to worry about the occasional “we beaner-piled into the car, all 12 of us” comments.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

To be fair, I really learned not to be up in arms over every racial comment because of my time in the military.
A lot of us coming in weren’t used to being around so many people of so many different races so we made light of the situation by poking fun at one another.
It was all in good fun and if you weren’t doing it just in fun and were just racist you got dealt with, but I think that experience made me more tolerant of these “my bad, I didn’t know that was racist” type situations cause believe me, there really are cats out there who don’t know certain things are considered racist.

  • DS44

    Englewood wins again!

  • Aizen

@ O: Yeah, “slanted” is a lot better than “chinky” just saying…
    Anyway, forget about that…

  • shm

@Enigmatic, nobody was physically forced to join the Nazi Party. There was a ton of societal pressure to do so, and it could add more convenience to peoples’ daily lives by making it easier to advance in their careers and stuff like that, but people weren’t sent to the camps for not joining. Dassler prolly joined for business reasons.

  • dazzy

Co-sign Gametimeweezy lmao. Word. A simple my bad woulda sufficed. Enigmatic: regardless of your background, you’re not in a position to dictate how anyone should feel about slurs. Your experience is relevent to YOU. Life isn’t one size fits all. Keep that in mind whenever you use YOUR experiences to dismiss other’s feelings….Get your paper Rose! His shoes must be selling somewhere if adidas is giving him the money. Who are any of you to say he doesn’t deserve it? Y’all don’t have no data evidence to say this is a bad deal. I’m sure adidas is more aware of the kind of investment they’re making than y’all are.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

@shm – Thanks for the history lesson (no sarcasm, I genuinely enjoy learning new things). I suppose I I should’ve known it wasn’t “join or die” since I remember reading about Erwin Rommel and how despite being one of the highest ranking German officers, he never considered himself a Nazi and said he did what he did for Germany, not for a political party or a dictator.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Fair enough, then you’re not in a position to tell me sh*t either.
    See how that works?

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

Someone needs to get Paul Pierce’s big ass a wheelchair.

  • slamfan4life

BUKU cash for Rose, dude deserves it

  • dazzy

I’m not giving u advice on how to feel about racial slurs or anything else. I’m telling u that your experiences are irrelevent as they pertain to others. It’s that simple.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Damn, nuccas is still trippin’ over that one comment I made?! Sensitive ass kids. I’ll say my bad to anyone that felt offended, but if you just feel like you’re holier than thou for whatever reason and wanna be quick to judge me and call me a racist because I grew up in an entirely different culture, hit the bricks, man. If dude would’ve just came and said, “Yo O, that’s not cool. It bothers me.” I would’ve apologized. But to come out and automatically say, “Racist, much?” That got me tight. So no, I ain’t saying my bad. I’m not apologizing for where I grew up, how I grew up or the vocab I used growing up, and if you want to label me something i’m not because of that, then keep it moving.

That’s a lot of eggs for Adidas to put in one BASKETball player. LoL

  • charliewinning

It’s not that serious. ‘Slanted’ is better than ‘chinky’. Just like homey up top said, it’s equally wrong to describe somethhing as n*ggerish. When people use upbringing as an excuse, I always point out that rednecks are often a product of their upbringing as well. Still, I’m stomping any of ‘em that feel bold enough to use the slur n*gga/n*gger in my presence. We can’t tell people how to feel about slurs used towards their race or ethnicity, regardless of our intentions. Btw, I was born and raised in Bk (Albany Projects, Bed-Stuy Do-or-Die). I don’t use it as an excuse. How about everyone just grow up and chill out?

  • charliewinning

My bad for the typos. Typing on my phone.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Omar: It wasn’t that big of a deal, we know you’re not a racist. Just letting you know how most people perceive it.
Also, I don’t think there’s a single post by charliewinning that I haven’t agreed with. We’re like the same person, LOL. Happy New Year bro.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

No doubt. It’s all good, Teddy. Happy New Year, all. Let’s hope the Mayan’s ain’t actually predict this to REALLY be the last year of humanity…
