Report: Rip Hamilton to Bulls Looks ‘Imminent’

Chicago’s top priority is to upgrade at shooting guard, and according to longtime SLAM contributor Aggrey Sam, the 33-year-old Rip seems like the likely candidate: “Sources with knowledge of the Bulls free-agency plans confirmed to CSNChicago.com Friday evening that the Bulls are targeting recently waived veteran shooting guard Rip Hamilton. The organization’s pursuit of the longtime Piston was first reported by the Chicago Tribune. What appears to be an increasingly imminent addition to the roster coincides with Friday’s decision to hold incumbent starter Keith Bogans out of the team’s first practice on the opening day of training camp. Bogans was apparently upset with the decision, but in a statement released by the Bulls, general manager Gar Forman didn’t rule out the return of Bogans, for whom the team holds a $1.73 million option for the season.”

Vince Carter was a better choice, but Bulls long term need J.R. Smith. Bulls need him. Hamilton is an old veteran shooter, with nothing else left. Come on Bulls.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Not sure if this really helps the Bulls. Rip is long past his prime and Chicago needs someone who can create his own shot.

  • dahon

    brandoy roy or rip hamilton?

  • lisa

Get J.R . Smith… I love Rip, but he is getting old. D-rose and J.R. would be fun to watch.

  • thor

I think Rip can do more than we think if he’s in a good situation. He’s not done at all. The whole chaos in Detroit made us forget about him i believe. Get it done Bulls.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

rip is gonna avg like 12-13 ppg. Thats better than 4… I also think he fits well cause rose likes to have the ball in his hands and rip is one of the best playing off the ball. I watched alot of pistons game last year (yes it was horrible) and rip did not play bad when he got a chance to play, he was just playing for a wackjob of a coach.

  • Red

Last season he averaged 14 and that was all while going through crazy drama in Detroit.

  • 12ising Phoenix

Are you kidding me? Rip is still capable of scoring 20 a night. The drama in Detroit obviously took a toll on his game, but he still averaged 14 ppg. He’s one of the best mid range shooters in the L , and can actually play D! Think about it, Rip would be a better option than Jamal Crawford, dude is a great scorer, but he’s one dimensional at times.

  • ron

12-13 points on this bulls team for Rip would be a solid addition for a team that lost in the ECF by a 6 point average. They don’t need a 20 point scorer, all they need is a consistent threat on the perimeter that forces good defenses to play them honest without everyone crowding the paint to stop rose from penetrating

  • 12ising Phoenix

Exactly, knock down shooter with championship experience. I would love him in my Knicks, but we can’t afford him .. :l

  • ron

I also think that Thibs will limit the extended minutes of rose and deng during the regular season because of the tired legs he saw in the playoffs. Having both Noah and Boozer at the start of the season will ease the workload for rose as well

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

he might be capable of scoring 20 a night but only on gstate or phoenix. if you think he is going to score 20 with the bulls your dead wrong

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

he is going to be a solid addition though and i think hes exactly what they need

  • Rainman

How are ppl saying he has nothing left? when was the last time u realistically saw him play for long periods of time? he was basically kept hostage in Detroit last year…

and btw when he DID get some minutes, he produced. I like this move by the Bulls, a lot.

  • slamfan4life

wanted him on the Bulls for the longest time, a “poor-mans” ray allen as some would call him; awesome addition

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    Not my first choice.
The Bulls need someone that can create his own shot.
LeBron did such an effective job on Rose in the ECF that he limited Rose’s ability to create scoring opportunities for others.
Thats why I would prefer someone like Jamal Crawford who can create scoring opportunities for themselves.
Basically what it boiled down to was, just mere days after Jerry Reinsdorf said he was prepared to go over the salary cap, he’s now looking to sign Rip to vet minimum rather than sign Crawford or Jason Richardson to the MLE.
This is just as much about who will come cheaper as it is about who would be the best fit for the Bulls.

  • ab40

ath the end of the game jamal crawford is a better fit, the other 43 minutes it’s probably someone who can play off of rose. It’s pick your poison. You can’t have two weak guards in there if you want to become a champion.

  • http://nbasobrietystrike.blogspot.com/ CoolWhip

I don’t like this one bit. Cosign basically everything Enig said. Uggghhh. Like I said last night, when’s the last time Rip was effective? 2005, ya like 7 years ago, 7 years ago!

  • lexluther703

JR Smith or Jason Richardson are my first choices for us, but like some said above me, getting a solid veteran with championship experience isn’t too bad. As a Bulls fan, I hope this works out

  • ron

And Crawford just started playing in meaningful basketball games just last year. The bulls were in the ECF with a shooting guard that averaged 4 points a night for an entire season, but was a standstill three point shooter that played solid defense. I love players that move without the rock because it forces the defense to work much harder and opens up opportunities for counters

  • O

Hey Enig, I’ll trade you Bibby for Rip. Deal??

  • Heals

This one is goin to be tough to judge until he plays. It obviously doesn’t hurt, but I just haven’t seen Rip play enough recently to gauge what’s left. This is one of those signings that may sound better than it actually is because of the cache associated with those Pistons guys. Dude can still stroke it from mid-range I’m sure, but I’m interested to see how rest goes…

  • ron

What type of player does wade have trouble guarding? Players that use screens and move without the ball(ie ray allen). Crawford likes to isolate too often and that would kill the bulls offense in the halfcourt. Hamilton would provide ball movement as well as player movement, which is the best option in beating a great defense like the Heat have

  • Soulquarian

I’m a long-time Rip hater but just because the media forgot about the guy doesn’t mean he lost his skills. This guy runs for fun, so I’m confident he’ll be ready to get 15ppg and make Wade chase him on screens all day.

  • MaxIsNative

    Imminent until Stern thinks otherwise.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

i don’t know… wade didn’t have ANY trouble guarding ray allen last year. the question is… can rip hamilton guard wade? I doubt it.

  • eZ

Nice, and now billups to the heat, dwight to the nets, and baron to the knicks, cp3 to the lakers, clippers resign jordan and memphis resign gasol…sit back and let the fun begin…

  • Bulls Fan

All we need is 10-15 ppg from Hamilton. If he can make that happen, which I believe will be cake walk for him on this team, we are set. We might as well start sewing a 11/12 championship banner. :-)

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Yo O, how bout Rip and Watson for Bibby and Shumpert?
That Shumpert kid is nice, plus he reps the Chi.
BTW should have Internet back later this week. Trying to type a blog post on your phone is a motherf*cker.
List almost done. I’ll hit you up via email when ready.

whenever people tell me that rip will tire out wade i ALWAYS think about the pistons/heat ECF in 06 where wade absolutely destroyed rip. he made rip invisible. it was like rip wasn’t even playing defense. I’d say that rip has regressed more since then than wade has even with wade’s injuries. Expect the same thing when the bulls meet the heat in the playoffs. RIP is an OVERRATED defender. take it from a guy that has watched the pistons play since the mid 90s. ya i missed their championships but i was too young to remember them. Rip can’t guard wade. can’t guard kobe. can’t guard ginobli, can’t guard most of those guys. he is a great cutter to the basket and i’d equate his cutting to derrick mason’s route running in the nfl which is superb/fundamental but other than that… he will be exposed. Now… rip fell out of the graces in detroit in 09 when his best friend chauncey was traded. he hasn’t been the same since then. However… pre chauncey’s departure rip hasn’t been all that impressive honestly. Solid? yes. now though? im sorry… not that big of a difference. IMO the bulls should have gotten a young SG that could grow with the bulls… hell maybe nick young. i know he’s a knucklehead but he is a fast athletic kid that can learn. give him a good coach and he can reach his potential. kind of a volume scorer but can create his own shot and pass pretty well. Has defensive potential and is young which means he can grow with rose. he has immense scoring ability (dropped 40 on wade last yr) just needs to fix up his efficiency & defense. thats a much better option tbh.

  • ron

I stopped reading after you said nick young. Rip will not outscore wade we know that but sending a player through screen after screen throughout a series normally has a residual effect. Plus the bulls have other wing defenders that would take turns defending wade, so rip would be defending someone like chalmers or battier both primarily outside shooters.

  • ron

The bulls can’t afford nic young anyway. Rose did a solid job on wade in the series but I believe it drained him in the process along with his other responsibilities. There is no perfect solution to the bulls shooting guard problems, their answer re upped back in south beach last year…

This deal is gonna come to haunt everyone who hates on Rip. I don’t think there is a guard in the league who will work harder with out the ball in his hands waiting for the reigning MVP to dish out. That is a scary pickup by a contender.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Enig, NO WAY i’m giving up my man Iman for anyone on the Bulls, man. I would’ve said Noah, but we got Chandler now. And Rose isn’t going anywhere. It’s all good, kid. I’ve been studying for next week’s finals to be honest. Cisco Networking ain’t NO joke, man…

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

rose and jr on the same team sounds good on paper but i dont know if JR will commit to Thibdos defence and/ or take suspect shots selections in the late 24sec’s (which is really what the bulls are trying to escape from)

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Enigmatic: Rich Hamilton can create his own shot better than you give him credit for. And he’s even better off the ball–probably the best midrange off-the-ball guard in the league. Your team is getting a good deal here; don’t sweat it.
It’d be worth it to keep Bogans as a back-up SG, too. His defensive is still solid.

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

I’d rather have Brewer than Bogans as a backup SG tho.
Bogans is a better defender and shooter but I just love Brewer’s hustle and tenacity.

  • http://bulls.com airs

Where’s tmac? Am I the only one still lobbying for him too chicago?

  • http://bulls.com airs

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

    not feeling the move

  • jarrett

LOL this aint gonna be enough for the Bulls to get passed Miami, or even New York IMO. Shoulda went after T-Mac

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

    New York?
    Lol they’re not a threat.

  • JeZ98

JR smith really? that dude is a chemistry killer all he does is jack up shots and work outta the offense, j-rich yes but they cant afford him, rip is a maybe, the only way to tell is to watch him play since he played crap min last season, all the bulls need is to bring back kirk hinrich, him and rose can take turns bringing the ball up and kirk is a proven defender, and plus he gives dwade fits

  • manu

    should’ve got Jrich
