Report: Timberwolves to Sign JJ Barea

Goodbye Dallas, hello Minny. So says JJ Barea, according to NBA.com: “A source close to free agent J.J. Barea tells TNT’s David Aldridge that the 27-year-old is finalizing details on a four-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves, which would further add to that team’s seemingly inexhaustible supply of guards. Barea, who starred in the postseason last spring during the Dallas Mavericks’ run to the NBA title, took more in Minnesota than in New York, which had been talking about a two-year deal, according to the source. But after using the amnesty provision on Saturday to waive guard Chauncey Billups and dealing forward Ronny Turiaf to Washington as part of the three-team deal that sent Tyson Chandler to New York, the Knicks technically fell under the cap, and thus lost their ability to use the mid-level exception starting at $5 million. They only had the new ‘room’ exception for teams that are below the tax threshold that starts at $2.5 million to offer. The Timberwolves could be looking for a mentor for their high-profile rookie guard, Ricky Rubio, who finally came over to the NBA after starring in Europe as a teenager. Rubio was taken fifth overall by the Wolves in 2009 but remained in Europe until this summer. The Wolves already have veteran guard Luke Ridnour on the roster as well. The Mavericks, who are intent on keeping cap flexibility next season, only offered Barea a one-year deal, the source said. That left Barea feeling ‘betrayed’ after he’d become a key contributor for Dallas the past few seasons and a major factor last season off the bench in the playoffs for the Mavericks, averaging 8.9 points and 3.4 assists in 18.6 minutes per game in the postseason.”

  • Danny_W_UK

    Luke Ridnour to Sacramento?

  • RunNGun

Apparently, the reason for this signing is due to Luke Ridnour and a couple of Wolves being traded to the Rockets for Kevin Martin. Stay tuned.

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

    Lolololol.

  • RunNGun

In the words of Bill Simmons and William Shatner… KAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LMAO How many point guards do they need?

  • Canesta

They both speak Spanish, I like the move. Barea can help Ricky. And you need more than one point guard. Ok they have too many, but I like the move.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

An off-season isn’t complete for David Kahn, unless he signs a point guard.

  • RunNGun

KAAAAAHHHNNNNN!!!! What else can I say? LOL

  • LA Huey

“Betrayed” by Dallas? Dude, you’re a small, one-dimensional guard who got his bread and butter off a uniquely unguardable big man. And now your’re backing up an unproven rookie who can’t score. Know your role.

  • Holiday

Good pick up by the T-Wolves, probably the best PG that was a free agent. If Derrick Williams pans out this team should be fairly decent.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Yeah hey Ricky, we just added a guy who is looking for major minutes, and he’s 5’9″ – But he’s better than Jonny Flynn!?!?! lol KAAAAHHHN is a MOOOORRRROOOOONNNNN

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Hey, he got his chip and he wants to get paid. Can’t blame him.

  • J.C.

JJ stop acting like you’re not just trying to get paid.
Timberwolves this is a completely retarded pickup, Barea and Rubio are completely different players and JJ’s a scrub who had one good post-season anyway, Ridnour would be a better mentor.

  • shutup

SCRUB? I think JJ is the main reason the Lakers got swept and a big part of the reason they had the success they had he was killing all playoffs and when he had a bad game the mavericks did too, and as a mentor why wouldnt you want someone from a similar background that has had championship experience? and the Mavericks obv werent gonna pay him what he deserved.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

No. Dirk was. And he is a SG in a PG body. he is no “mentor” for anyone on the Wolves.

  • marc

He’s definetly doing this just for the money. I don’t see how this will help the wolves.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

Kahn is insane. I would like to have a conversation with him just to get his reasoning for all the stupid stupid decisions he makes

  • james

JJ is entitled to get paid. . . Don’t hate!

  • Amazing1986

He should have taken the deal with the Knicks. The wolves are going nowhere

  • LA Huey

4 years for $19M. About $9M too much.

  • eZ

Just when i thought the wolves were getting somewhere……

  • shutup

wow, ok when you go into a game plan and devise a defensive strategy im sure they counted on dirk getting his 25 points but when a bench player comes in an drops upwards of 20 points it becomes clear that it was a major part of the winning. its not like Dirk was dropping 50, teams didnt plan or have an answer for JJ. and your sg in a pg body sh!t is asinine when you say that Rose shouldnt be shifted to the 2. and Rubio will need someone he can relate to so a spanish speaking guard with a ring is actually a perfect fit, oh and whats rubio’s main defecit? scoring, what does JJ do well? score , so it makes sense to bring a guy in who can teach a small in stature guard like rubio tricks on how to get shots, get to the rim and do it with confidence. and if you look at the playoffs games where JJ scored above his average the Mavericks won, decidedly.

  • shutup

and for a final note the heat one the first two games of the finals jj came off the bench and had less than spectacular games, when he was made a starter the Mavericks regained momentum and as we all know won the series. and since your such a fan of articles go look at this one http://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2011/8/31/2395905/j-j-barea-and-misconceptions

  • LA Huey

JJ feasted on the Lakers’ notoriously poor pick-and-roll defense. I’m not going to take that away from him. However, most team’s in the league don’t have the sieve at PG that the Lakers do and it’s not like JJ was taking cats off the dribble. Defending a pick-and-roll featuring Barea and Dirk is way more difficult when you replace Dirk with a Timberwolf. JJ is not worth nearly $5M/yr.

  • dma

lol just because they both speak spanish doesn’t mean their close/same background. last i checked, spain was in europe and puerto rico is pretty much the 51st US state.

  • shutup

i agree i dont think a solid backup pg is worth that money, but the monster playoffs he had has led to him getting a big payday, well not necessarily big but he over achieved and now he’s getting compensated for it. and it wasnt only the lakers, he played well throughout the playoffs. i think he woulda stayed a maverick if they offered him more than just a 1 year contract. if they offered him like a 3 year deal at 2.5 mil i think he woulda stayed

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

eZ, the wolves are never gonna get anywhere until Glen Taylor realizes how insane his GM is.

  • shutup

so @dma where do you think the settlers in puerto rico originated from? uhhhm maybe spain. both cultures put heavy emphasis on the matriarch of the family both cultures put great emphasis on religion, many of their customs are the same as well as their food. lets see what else oh, both of their names end in vowels barea/rubio their first and middle names share the same letter JJ/RR and they both play the same position, sh!t they could be twins,

  • http://www.aol.com wagers

Like the guy up there said if Derrick Williams turns out to be good, and the Kevin Martin trade is legit, these guys could actually be really good.
    PG: Barea/Rubio
    SG: Kevin Martin
    SF: Derrick Williams
    PF: Michael Beasly
    6th man: Wesley Johnson/whichever pg didn’t start
C: Kevin Love (I know he’s traditionally a four but sine their other forwards are big they will be fine)
tell me that is not a good team..^^^

  • http://www.aol.com wagers

    since*

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    What Kevin Martin trade?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Luke Ridnour and a bunch of Wolves for Kevin MArtin? WHAT THE F*CKITY F*CK?!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Damn, Kahn is killing it…First he gets Bilbo Barea, then Kevin Martin? Thunder better watch out, the Wolves eyeing the Northwest division title.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Sry… Anyone have any info on this?

  • Gusist

I think you could trade ridinour, delonte west and a pick for k-mart, just to clear out some of the old pgs

  • Mike From Spain

Hmm… shutup has a good point, Spain and Puerto Rico have different cultures and JJ and RR have very different backgrounds, but I think that the language will be something that helps. What are they doing with 4 PGs?

  • Josh

Does anyone have any info about the Kevin Martin trade? Looking on the internet and I cant find anything?

  • LA Huey

Kevin Martin trade? I think we just got trolled.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ5TajZYW6Y Teddy-the-Bear

Yes! I found a link to the Kevin Martin trade… Wolves are offering Darko Milicic, Luke Ridnour, and a first rounder for Kevin Martin. And a third team might be involved… Click my name for details.
