Report: Troy Murphy Signs with Lakers

Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Troy Murphy has signed a one-year deal with the L.A. Lakers to help bolster a front line that lost Lamar Odom to Dallas. According to Adrian Wojnarowski: “Troy Murphy has agreed to a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, a league source told Yahoo! Sports. Murphy joins Josh McRoberts as another versatile free agent forward to help partially negate the loss of Lamar Odom, who the Lakers traded to Dallas Mavericks. Murphy, 31, finshed his 10th season in the NBA on the Boston Celtics bench last season.”

Not used, inexplicably, by the Celtics last season. He is only two years removed from being either the second or third-most proficient rebounder in the League. Excellent back-up for Bynum. Their entire second unit is solid this season: Blake, Ebanks, WP (Artest), McRoberts, and Murphy. It will surprise the many, many misinformed detractors.

loving it lakers, loving it… solid pick up.
like kobe said, we like jewelry in LA
lakers are first but clippers got my fave player after kobe in cp3. its a good time to be in LA for sure… am i right fellow residents?

Hopefully this works out for the Lakers, he’s a pretty good shooter. He couls probably still put up solid pint and rebound numbers on a consistent basis for LA.

Is that it?? Keep pushing for something more Lakers

  • crunkjuice

    murphy aint gonna do anything

  • http://slamonline.com BossTerry

Pretty good pick-up, especially with Odom gone.

Great pick for the Lakers, surprise Stern allow Lakers to sign free agents. BOOK IT!!

  • Jono

Who keeps making these lame FA signings? First Josh McRoberts and now this beak-nosed creature.

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

Murph/McRoberts/Luke/Kapono/Blake. as the kids say, “Leggo”

  • shutup

Anybody who said Stern didnt get a great deal for NO is just being silly, this had nothing to do with LA and everything to do with the league owning NO. Troy Murphy is a solid pickup for LA his feet are a lil slow but good rebounder, and decent scorer. like i said solid pickup

  • Red

Lakers are the team to beat now

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

I don’t know about “team to beat” but we’ll most likely have a pretty solid bench.

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

Lakers could use one more big. i was thinking another 2 guard, but i think they can wing it with Kapono/Fish/Barnes/Artest taking turns playing 2 at select times

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

What we mostly need is a PG, but it unfortunatelyblooks like there aren’t any good ones left.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

    *looks like

  • http://Slamonline.com Rocksinmypants

Don’t know why my other comment didn’t post, but I think they should go after Kris Humphries. Young athletic an cheap.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Who needs Dwight Howard when you’ve got Troy Murphy!

  • L.A.K.R.

We definitly need a point guard, don’t get it wrong Mc Rob. & Murphy give a deep bench inside for the paint, but i hope that the Lakers got plans for next season, cuse this season they camed out short! I would love to see Howard & D-Will come to the team, but i don’t trust in that dream. Cuban gonna try it for shour, i see that coming…

Guys are throwing them jokes, but this is a great signing. This allows for a three man rotation of Gasol-Bynum-Murphy for the 4/5 spots… Murphy can play both the four and five, gives a different look for the lakers (he spreads out the floor instead of roams the post) and when Bynum eventually goes down like he always does at the end of the season, McRoberts can play minutes and Gasol wont be exhausted.
So yeah, I like this signing a lot.

  • http://skjflf.com Jukai

That being said, it probably woulda been better to just keep Odom and not sign Murphy at all. But hey, beggars can’t be choosers!

  • Mburb321

If troy was still any good im pretty sure the celtics would of played him more. Then again id pick him up before pryzbilla, hes not nearly as injury prone.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

McRoberts will get more minutes than Murphy

  • MikeC.

Is Ghostface Pryzbilla still on the market? He’s worth a look.

  • Heals

Better than some other alternatives, but as C’s fan it was clear Murph was lost last season. He was coming off an injury and getting inconsistent mins (mostly due to his lackluster play), but if he plays all year for them I like it. You just got to wonder, I know the LAL can score, but how about some stoppers…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

If – huge if – he can recover his 2009-2010 form then this is a great signing, no question. He lacks Odom’s versatility but he can be a real asset off the bench. I just question why he didn’t play for Boston last year, and I question why other teams didn’t make a run for him.

  • Jake

The Lakers are going to give big minutes to both McRoberts and Murphy. It’s not unrealistic to think the Lakers could win a championship this year….it might actually be their best chance. Play Bynum for 30 minutes a game to lower the chance of injury, take Kobe out of the game whenever possible and substitute two of the younger guys for Gasol in the 4th quarter if they’ve got the lead. No one will have amazing stats but I bet they’ll be in the Finals come June. Come to think of it, now that Miami has to dogfight their way out of the east with Atlanta, Chicago, Boston and NY, I’m taking Lakers over Heat in 6 games.

  • http://slamonline.com neitel

I see a Heat vs lakers, Nike Lebron vs. Kobe matchup real soon!

  • http://Slamonline.com Kap

Ebanks and McRoberts looked pretty good in the intra squad game and Bynum according to coaches has been the standout of camp. Could be their deepest team in years ironically when so many are predicting an early playoff exit.

  • KSupreme

    hahahahhahahhahahhaahhahahhahaha, i’m a laker fan…..but damn….this was a good laugh….keep pushin mitch

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Last call, Paul is a dummy for allowing himself to get traded to a team where the owner is openly racist and Clippers only asset is Griffin, who will be injury prone from all these high flying dunks, the effect it will have on his knees. Also New Orleans lost, Gordon just scores, Kaman will not sign after this year-injury prone and Aminiu sucks. Also the Minnesota first round pick could be a bust. So to me you traded Chris Paul for Eric Gordon and a Top 10 pick. WOW, New Orleans with Laker trade get assets with two 1st round picks in a deep draft next year and Odom, Kevin Martin, Scola who can play now and win. I just don’t get it. I lost respect for the NBA brand and Paul wanted out so bad to leave New Orleans he went to the Clippers to play with a dunker. What has America come to?

  • Jose

that is a good pick up considering whats left in FA. . .

  • http://www.slamonline.com Tarzan Cooper

Seed, once again, displaying his permanent dunce cap…. Murph can play, very good rebounder, and 3pt shooter. He can help that team.

  • http://www.slamonline.com PapaDuck

Still dont see why we traded Odom. We should have been signing guys like this from the beginning. And kept Odom, just let him complain for a month or two then he would have been back to normal

  • OTB

There’s rumbling that the Lakers are going to pick up B-Diddy. If that’s the case, this is a solid roster.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

    @OTB, that’ll be a really good pickup

  • Red

    Sarcasm, Lakers suck lol.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Ask the celtics about Troy Murphy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

@JTaylor all because Boston didn’t use him doesn’t neccessarily mean he’ll suck with the Lakers.

  • jake

The Nets didn’t use Stephen Jackson and look how brilliantly that turned out for them.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

I think this will be an underrated pick up. Lefty can stroke it.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Steve Blake should start, I think he will. He is so much more productive than Derek Fisher and a MUCH better defender. Plus, he can fight.

  • Tyler E.

Very solid pickup. Now there are four PFs, one or two of which can play C. Does this now give the Lakers a little more flexibility IF they include Pau in a Dwight Howard deal? McRoberts would look pretty solid playing next to Dwight. Also, there’s a chance the Lakers would be able to trade a couple picks and the Odom trade exception for a guy like Paul Millsap from Utah. Just a thought. I like this signing, regardless. Now let’s go for the gusto, Mitch.

  • T-Money

If Murphy could still play, Boston would have played him.

  • dahon

they are still looking for a big trade…

  • #6marjons

yep thatll filll the LO hole …..????

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I don’t think this is such a bad pick up… it’s going to come down to the offensive structure that the Lakers will run.

There are several mid and high post plays that you could run with the ball through Kobe, Gasol and Murphy. You would have balance with Artest and Fisher in the corner or Bynum low on the block.

  • http://skjflf.com Jukai

JTaylor: what’s sad is you said Blake was a much better defender than Fish. Blake couldn’t guard the 15th man on the bench. ANd you know what? You’r eright. Fisher really needs to quit, you know.

  • Jono

Anyone who actually thinks Troy Murphy can do a solid job off the bench in place of Gasol/Bynum has not seem this man play recently. He is sh!t. I’d take World Peace as PF over this joker. Troy was great back in college but that was 50 years ago. Yes he has a great shot, but so does Yi Jianlian.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Bynum is going to get injured, LO is gone. Man it wouldn’t suprise me if the Lakers would be really mediocre this year.

  • http://www.twitter.com/hurstysyd Hursty

Murphy’s got serious game. He’ll surprise alot of people I reckon.

  • http://www.nbadraft.net showtime

I would be sarcastic but their no need…Kapano, luke, mc roberts , troy, No heart gasol, injury prone bynum, fisher, blake,&Wp, And 2nd round somphores that didnt get no burn. dare i say contenders

  • jimmythesaint67

Murphy to LAL? bahahahaha .. what a stiff .. first play in a Celtic uniform last season was getting blocked by the rim on a dunk attempt. Should enjoy that at Staples ..

  • Dre Baller

Lakers need to pick-up Gilbert Arenas
