Rodney Stuckey ‘Balks’ at Pistons Contract Offer

Rodney Stuckey is not happy with the Pistons’ latest contract offer. The restricted free agent might soon seek a way out of Detroit, or set himself up for unrestricted free agency next summer. According to ESPN’s Chad Ford: “The Detroit Pistons and restricted free agent Rodney Stuckey are struggling to come to terms on a long-term contract, sources said. Stuckey, the Pistons’ top free agent this offseason, is balking at what the Pistons are prepared to pay him. The Pistons have discussed a deal that would pay Stuckey between $40 million and $45 million over five years, according to sources. By comparison, Mike Conley agreed to a five-year, $40 million extension with the Memphis Grizzlies in November.”

To stop short and refuse to go on: The horse balked at the jump. To refuse obstinately or abruptly…

  • thecomputerdude

Did I miss something? Rodney is acting like he averaged 25pts and 12 dimes a game. Take the money Rodney.

  • gubbins

And how exactly does he deserve much more?? Brandon Knight may well bench him anyway. Amazing how little anyone has learned from this lockout.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Anything over 45 is overpaying…He’s a nice player, but he’s a dime a dozen type of gaurd. He played very well at the end of last season (21 ppg 8 apg), but he has yet to show he can consistently maintain that level of play (he probably can’t). Not a good shooter, not a great distributor, an average defender, and a good but not great scorer. Him making the same kind of money as Mike Conley seems about right.

  • vctmac

take the money and run homie,
dnt wait 2 long before gms realize your a dleague stud.
rodney is nice, but not too nice. hes another undesized guard who has flashes of brilliance, aint no 1 payin close to 50 mill to keep him around a team tht hasnt been a contender for about 4-5 years lol. might aswell spend tht money on FA/trade considerations or investing in recruiting draft picks that they need…

  • http://leipzig-eagles.de/ Speedy

He led his team to the regular season last year and now its time to make some money. :-)

  • http://SLAMonline.com GotHandles?

wow. what have the pistons done since he took over at PG? I would take the offer off of the table if I was the GM and hand the reins over to Brandon Knight. Good luck finding anywhere close to that much $ elsewhere, rodney. Whoever is advising this cat should be locked up.

  • Lew alcindor

Don’t like players who overvalue their worth.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

Both sides are wack. The Pistons for offering so much and Stuckey for Balking at it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Then again, they are paying Ben Gordon $60 million to be a backup so….

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

Tayshaun Prince who has been their best player since they won the chip took 4 years $27 million and not only do they offer this cat 40-45 mill, he balks at it? What the heck are the Pistons doing? I agree with GotHandles, take the deal off the table and name Knight the starter. Their not going anywhere right now anyway.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

I don’t understand why Detroit wouldn’t explore sign and trade options with him. They could at least get draft pick(s) and cash out of it.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

They might be looking to move him to the SG while BK plays the point. But I agree, overpaying for him and silly Stuckey for not taking it.

  • Dub

Who does this guy think he is? Mike Conley has showed that he is a better overall player than Stuckey but yet this guy is laughing at 45 mil? Give me a break! Once again it shows that the NBA players are wayyyy too greedy and half of them aren’t even playing for the love of the game. Strictly money with these plugs.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Stuckey is a better player than Conley, but Conley runs the point better. If Stuckey played SG he’d be alot more successful.

  • Detroit Dave

If the Pistons are offering Stuckey $45 Mil then they should also get rid of Ben Gordon. They can’t have $80 mil worth of contracts tied into 2 SGs.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

    Amnesty BG!

  • projectphantom

Stuckey isn’t even close to being worth that much. Let him go will bynum is better than him anyway. pft “balks” smh what a joke

  • LA Huey

Combo guards with little to no potential are hard to find in this leauge, guys.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pawtucket-YMCA-Youth-Basketball-League/278842845500531 Gametimeweezy

    Pistons are treading water

  • Detroit Dave

Wayno, I feel you bro, but its hard to Amnesty BG. You’re still going to be paying his salary. I would trade Charlie V away for the ANYTHING. Give me a 2nd round pick in 2015. I got tired of watching him hit a 3 pointer. Stand. Pose. Get back on defense then commit a foul-and 1. He makes my stomach turn.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

NO way they amnesty BG, no way. When has Joe Dumars every admitted one of his decisions was completely wrong? Amnestying Ben Gordon or Charlie Villanueva would be the first time I have ever seen Joe D go back on one of his decisions (unless you count not resigning Darko).

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Mike Conley is better than Rodney Stuckey.
    BY A LOT.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Stuckey would not be better at the two.
He can’t shoot. HIs biggest advantage at the one is his size and strength against smaller ones. When they were playing Rip you couldn’t take your two guard off Rip because Rip would post him, which meant Stuckey was abusing midgets.
When he goes to the two, most players will be his size and speed. And since his jumper is crazy shaky, he’s basically a driver only.
I just read something that said he shoots sub 40 percent anywhere past 10 feet. That is atrocious.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Yeah he shoots 36% from outside 10Feet.

  • eZ

Dumars and Thomas are Bad Boys for real. First they make secret pacts with mediocre talent to overpay them. Then they call up Rick Mahorn and Bill Laimbeer and pay their players a visit in the middle of the night to collect..
Mchale, ainge and west infiltrate different teams and then make ridiculus lopsided trades to help their old team win the chip. They make crazy money betting of it in vegas.
Jordan is in a league of his own -as usual-. He just drafts unworthy rookies way too high, then completely destroys their confidence.
It’s all to get back to Stern.

  • Waggle

Rodney is being an idiot imo..he should be happy with 4.5$m/year..never mind 8-9

  • c.a.

Just proves that the Lockout meant sh*t to these brainless players.

They did not comprehend the economics of it AT ALL. More air in their heads than a basketball

  • feez_22

honestly… LET RODNEY GO. heès not worth it. Brandon knight has more potential at the PG spot. let brandon get his minutes. Rodney is so overrated… its not even funny anymore. This guy can’t play defense, can’t shoot, is not a spectacular passer… he shouldn’t even be getting 35 million yet because he looks @ the dumb contracts the pistons signed before (charlie v 5 yrs 35 mil, bg 5 yrs 55 mil) im sure he wants little ben $. maybe he doesn’t realise little ben is about to get amnestied any day now. smh the piatons CANNOT AFFORD 2 atrocious contracts at guard. im sorry… let stuckey go into the open market. he really aint worth 45 mil. just another deal the pistons and the fans will be pissed off a lot. honestly… the pistons would be better off trading him for a draft pick or 2. he isn’t worth it. i’m sick and tired of overrated players b*tching and moaning about their contract situations.

  • Tyquan

I wish I had enough balls to turn down $45 million he must be crazy ain’t he the third option on a lottery team!

  • http://leipzig-eagles.de/ Speedy

Maybe… he wants out of Detroit. 4Years are a long time in such a bad team.

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

c.a. What about the brainless owners who are overpaying these players? The ones that offer Stucker 40-45 mil. The ones that gave Marcus Thornton 40 mil, Kwame Brown 7 mil for a year? You can’t blame the players for taking(or balking at) what’s offered to them.

  • http://leipzig-eagles.de/ Speedy

    on not in

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

dfrance, I agree but Marcus Thornton put up 21-5-3 after going to the Kings. That’s worth $8M a year.

  • vtrobot

ha ha. this is awesome. gotta feed the fam. rodney, give bonzi a call.

  • Ali

the Purple and Gold side of LA is real nice, Rod…jussayin

  • http://www.t-mac.com/tmac/index unf*ckwitable

Do not up taht offer D.

  • matt

Dumars ruined this guy’s career by trying to transform him into a PG, Stuckey is a SG.

  • http://www.thesmashbrothas.com zen garden

if anything they should get rid of dude he aint no pg

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

@matt, I don’t see how you can “ruin” someones career by making them practice different basketball skills. LBJ played point. Did it ruin him? Tyreke Evans played point. Is he terrible now? D-Wade played point. He’s not exactly a scrub… Dumb logic imo. Stuckey is better served going forward now because he can play two positions.

  • Sean B

I hate when people complain that players are only in it for the money. This is a business. These guys have 10-15 years(if they are lucky) to maximize their earnings to support them and lord knows how many else people for the rest of his life. I don’t mind guys being a little greedy when it’s clear the guys cutting the checks(owners) are even greedier.

Get yours Stuck. If Ben Gordon is getting $60 mill to be on the bench, tell em you won’t sign for anything lower then $75 million. Then when they wave good bye you’ll realize how foolish your demands were in the first place.

I’m all with guys getting paid but at least be a semi-All-Star caliber player before you start balking at demands.

  • Sean B

Random… remember when this guy was a rookie/2nd year player they were comparing him to D-Wade? I remember Jeff Van Gundy almost losing his mind during a live telecast when he heard Mark Jackson utter such an atrocity.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Stuckey played fewer minutes than Conley and had comparable stats. He’s a bad shooter but a good slasher. Stuckey in general is a far better scorer and almast as good of a passer as Conley. Stuckey also had horrible coaches the past 3 years and was fighting RIP Hamilton, Ben Gordon, Tracy McGrady, and Austin Daye for minutes. Conley has better PG skills, but Stuckey is a better player. Without RIP I think he’ll be better.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Conley is better than Stuckey for how he runs a team. Watching both players regularly will prove an obvious difference. If your a PG you have to understand how to put your team in position to win (or get them in rhythm, set up the pace, ect.) basically Mike Conley has the combination of basketball iq, speed/quickness, shooting advantages that make him a much much better player

  • snasty10

Joe D has done nothing good for this team since 2004 when they won the chip, and re-signing tayshaun and big ben are not a good way to start this season

  • Mega

I can’t think of a Pistons acquisition that has ever impressed me.

Dumars is almost as bad as colangelo…… man does colangelo suck big time.

  • matt

@Lakeshow – Stuckey is a SG who was forced to play PG. PS: LBJ and DWade can use complete PG duties but those 2 are some of the best overall players in the NBA. Also, Tyreke doesn’t play PG full time. “Stuckey is better served going forward now because he can play two positions.” I’m just saying SG is his natural position. It’s good that he can play PG, but I don’t want him to play PG full time, which is what Dumars made him do. @Mega – Dumars brought that 04 championship to Detroit. bSince then he has made horrible moves. BC has made horrible decisions, but thankfully he is quick to admit his mistakes and get rid of them. (ie. Trading Hedo for LB). Unfortunately he still has hope for Bargnani.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Not to digress, but Stuckey so reminds me of 50 Cent.

  • Latrell Sprewell

“Young man, do the right thing and take the money now”

  • RunNGun

Don’t become Latrell Sprewell. Take the money and ball.

  • dan

a point guard lacking any court vision turns down 40+ million? wow…

  • Justin

Another idiot player vastly overvaluing himself. What a shocker. This guy should get nothing more than $4-$5.5M per year and even that’s a stretch

  • Ryan

I’m a big Pistons fan and it’s been fuct up the last couple of years. Rodney Stuckey has been a big reason why. The dudes got huge holes in his game (playmaking, shooting) and his attitude is crap too. What makes this even worse is we’ve got that mfer Ben Gordon on the roster collecting big checks and he’s worse than Stuckey.

If it was up to me I’d dump the both of them for whatever I could get that wasn’t a long term contract. I’d rather start Will Bynum (who goes hard) and Brandon Knight than pay these two clowns.

As for the money Stuck’s straight crazy he in no way deserves as much as he’s been offered let alone more. I think he’s trying to force his way out of Detroit. I really hope Tom Gores gets Joe Dumars to stop sniffing glue and get back to making sound decisions.

  • Lew alcindor

I guess he’s gonna get rich or die tryin
