Scottie Pippen is Suing the Media


Scottie Pippen is suing every media outlet that has claimed that he is bankrupt; the former Bulls star is looking for $1 million in damages.  From TMZ.com: “Pippen has filed a lawsuit against TONS of online media outlets — including CBSsports.com, CNBC.com, Arizona State University and more — claiming they all falsely reported the former Chicago Bulls star had gone belly up. According to the docs, filed in federal court in Illinois and obtained by TMZ … Pippen claims, “It is a most foul libel indeed to be falsely accused of being bankrupt.”

    I agree with Scottie on this one, I’d be pissed if media outlets were saying that I was bankrupt. HIM suing for ‘only’ $1 Million is more about being annoyed than the money. If he really needed the cash, then to keep him is his established lifestyle, he’d be asking for a lot more than a million. So I would answer “No”, this doesn’t make him sound as though he’s bankrupt. Quite the opposite actually. Makes him seemed pissed and trying to fight for his reputation/image. These kinds of reports can really hurt various business ventures he would want to go into and could even limit his earning potential in speaking engagements and appearances etc. when they think you are desperate for money.

    Find it hard to believe SP33 has no money. And like THE NUPE said…a mil really isnt that much money if youve made that times 100 in your career. Broke people wouldnt sue for money that would potentially only last a few months. It would be an amount they could be set for. False accusations.

    Even though I don’t see why this particular issue is that serious, the media needs to get back to being responsible. Reporting false info means that fact checking wasn’t done. Lawsuits are one of the very few options we have to hold media outlets accountable for irresponsible journalism.

    Pippen really is broke though. He lost tons of money in some plane venture that went belly up. I’m pretty sure that is the only reason he is working for the bulls right now.

    I mean most Sports figures blow their money, but hey if Pippen wasn’t bankrupt then I understand why he’d sue. He’s no celebrity per se so he probably didn’t handle the backlash well. Idk, but hey 1 million ain’t a lot as someone said.

    If you sue on commission, the lawyer doesn’t get paid unless you get paid. And, even if you pay a retainer, if you win your case, the other side often has to pay your lawyer fes.

    its his legal right to pursue legal action especially if it hurt his business or his reputation. Proving people wrong by using words really doesnt work, sue them and it will prevent this from happening ever again. the dollar amount is just so that way these people take it serious, you sue for a dollar and they would just settle, at least a mil hurts their boottom line.

    If so called reputable media outlets decide to put out stories, they need to make sure they can back up their stories with factual information. If they don’t, it’s an individual’s right to sue for libel. It’s really that simple. The dollar amount is irrelevent. The priniciple is what’s important.

    You sue for a dollar and refuse to settle then your nOt suing for money, your suing for principle. Putting $1M on it, knowing if he wins he won’t have to pay a dollar makes it look like he does need money.

    So unless he goes about proving his point the way you layed it out, his lawsuit has no merit? I’m not really sure what there is to debate. Either he does some juvenile $1 prank or he’s broke? Sorry, but the idea of suing for an amount that makes major media corporations (and the courts) pay attention seems more adult. Most people would rather their cause be taken seriously. I’m guessing that’s why he came up with a large number.

    Just to be clear, the full lawsuit totals $9M ($1M per medial outlet and a total of 9 are sited). His estimated net worth is approximately $40M. Most of the suit came up because CNBC included him in an article about athletes that have gone bankrupt and CBSsports had a similar article about NBA players specifically with his picture. He asked for retractions from the printed version of these articles (which he got), but the on-line versions are still out there. So, he’s (rightfully imo) suing.

    I didn’t say he’s broke. I said he looks broke. His wife went on basketball wives, he played a “tour” in Europe, and he’s suing “the media” for saying he was bankrupt. If it were ME I would sue for $1.00 if I sued at all. Which I would try and avoid doing. I don’t know what he should or shouldn’t do outside of what I would do. I didn’t realize I said “he should” in the first comment until just now. I was wrong in saying what he should do. Just from how I see it if I were him.

    @nbk – I’d expect he feels he’s lost significant amounts of money in future investments because the stories have hurt his business reputation and thus is ALSO suing for financial damages. It’s reasonable to think a board or busines manager has turned down investment proposals from him because of the articles, thus depriving him of money.
