Shawne Williams Chooses Nets Over Knicks

Both the Knicks and Nets have been trying to sign Shawne Williams these past few days, but according to the NY Post, the swingman has decided to accepted New Jersey’s offer: “Shawne Williams is headed to … Jersey. Williams, a Knicks’ small forward off the bench last season, chose to join the Nets over returning to the Garden because of a bigger role that was offered. Williams, 25, who is a close friend of Amar’e Stoudemire, also felt slighted by the Knicks in recent days as they waited on Jamal Crawford’s decision and refused to make Williams an offer. It wasn’t until Crawford said no to the Knicks that they offered Williams their $2.5 million exception. The Nets were able to outbid the Knicks because they are under the salary cap and were desperate for a forward. The Nets offer was two years, $6 million with an opt-out after the first year. It was $1 million more than the Knicks were able to offer. Agent Happy Walters said Williams still debated taking less money from the Knicks because he enjoyed playing their last season, but opted for a potential starting role. Williams actually could start for New Jersey at the 3 position, whereas he would have had to fight for playing time in a crowded Knicks rotation. ‘Shawne made a decision on what’s best for him and his family,’ Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire said. ‘We’ll be alright. . We have a solid team with what we have now. We’re comfortable with our roster. He’s not too far away, we’ll see him shortly.’”

    money, money, money, monneeyy, monnneeyy.

I don’t blame him for leaving. He had hurt feelings, and the Nets guaranteed him more money.

    can he play d?

Really didn’t want him to leave. Great 3 point shooter and played pretty good defense. Looked hella old for 25 years old tho…

  • lights out

significant loss for the Knicks. his 3 point shooting and perimeter D made a difference last year.

“significant loss”? Shawne is that you?

Can’t be mad at a young guy still looking for his place in the league.

    man, what is ny’s bench!?

Sad to see Extra E go , he was a good defender and reliable behind the arc. Gotta respect he left for a mil more and a stater spot. New jersey won’t be winning that much this year though!!! NYK…..

Don’t blame him for making the decision. Still, as a Knicks fan, I’m gonna miss him. True, he doesn’t play much D, but every team needs a guy who is guaranteed to give you 40-50% from three while never forcing up a bad shot.

    knicks bench? the bench itself.

The Knicks are being patient and waiting to see who clears the amnesty waiver wire, then they’ll know which direction their going in regards to adding to their team. Also, I know two players they’ll be eyeing when they are allowed to leave China, and that is Kenyon Martin and JR Smith, both of whom have excellent relationships with Carmelo Anthony and Knicks Director of Pro Player Personnel Mark Warkentien. One of those two I think comes to the Knicks. Bottom line, the Knicks got a lot of work to do, and that goes for the players, coaches, and front office. As a fan, I’m looking forward to the Knicks journey this season. The time is now for the Knicks. No more next year ish.

    *which direction they’re going

  • bnets

they wont be able to afford kenyon martin or jr smith lol

@briefs by the time those two get back from China, it’s likely they’ll have to take less than their market value if they want to be on a playoff team contending for a chip. It’s not like they won’t get paid in the summer of 2012 if they do well during the real season.
