Source: Delonte West Agrees to Deal with Mavericks

by Tzvi Twersky | @ttwersky

Guard Delonte West has agreed to a one-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks, sources close to the 28-year-old say.

West, a talented guard known best for his off-court personality, also had spoken with the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers in the past week. As recently as three days ago, the defensive-minded guard was prepared to re-sign with the Celtics. Dallas, however, showed more interest and made West feel needed.

West only played 24 regular season games last season for the Boston Celtics, but he scored in double-figures in five of Boston’s nine Playoff games. He has career averages of 9.7 ppg and 3.6 apg.

Nice catch for Big D. I miss Redz on a Cavs uni. Dude can ball.

lol Lebron’s gonna kill the Mavs on Christmas

man, the mavs are winning this “offseason.”

Nice. I guess that’s why they didn’t chase Barea.

Another good pickup by the Mavs.

This is the first time I’ve seen SLAM break a story. Even the all-knowing Woj credited you guys. Good job, and great pick up for the Mavs…they’re quietly assembling a killer roster.

all these one year deals.. If cp3 doesn’t end up getting traded, the mavs are gonna be in good position to get him next summer.

Mavs have done a great job retooling this season. LO, VC, DWest, BWright and RFernandez. They are probably deeper than last year’s team.

The Championship and Dirk’s heroics have made one year deals with the Mav’s look pretty good to players I imagine. A shot at the chip and no more labels of choking and being a soft team that underperforms in the playoffs

Primed to make a big push next summer for Dallas product, D-Will.

mavs going hard this offseason, their squad looks good.

Are people seriously saying the Mavs are winning the offseason? Granted, Odom’s pickup was a steal and West can be a real asset if he doesn’t break down, but losing Chandler was huge for that team. Chandler covered up so many defensive errors and his partnership with Dirk – combined with a lot of hot shooting in the backcourt – is what won the Mavs the title. Great defensive centres who don’t need to score to affect a game are worth much more than a broken-down shooting guard, a streaky if effective forward and a talented but mentally disturbed guard.

    What Dagger said.

Although I’m a heat fan, I really hope Delonte gets it back together. He’s an allstar level guard when he’s healthy, but his mental illness doesn’t allow him much healthy time.

Nice move. Wish he was on the Knicks.

Great reporting by Tzvi and nice signing for the Mavs.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Looks like Tzvi didn’t get the first scoop for nothing–Delonte probably loved that story he did for the mag. Good stuff all around, Mr. Twersky!

@dagger, Mav’s a doing well because they are lining up all their contracts to end at the end of the season opening up a heap of cap space, which would not have happened had they re-signed Chandler, Barea, and Butler.

THey have also managed to pick up quality veterans in Odom, Carter and now West, for nothing.

  • Heals

Win-win-win!? Props to Tzvi, but let’s wait for someone from ESPN to confirm it 10 mins after him (ya’ll know what I mean), props to the Mavs for filling out an interesting “repeat” roster and props to Redz finding a nice landing spot. Damn I thought the C’s were getting 2 Wests’ a day ago, now none, oh well…

Hide ya kid, hide ya momz

  • dma

had they picked up kurt thomas, i’d say they were winning the off-season. adding Vince, Odom and West look good ON PAPER. they need size, or we’re going to see a lot more brian cardinal.

  • dannyb

Dirk better lock up his mom.

  • Waskito

I think joke about mom is not funny anymore. Read Mr. West story in SLAM made me realize he struggle every day to be normal. Really want to comment more but my English are limited…

^^You say your english is limited? I understood you just fine. Mom jokes are corny now. I totally agree. Slam story on West was really good too.

I can’t believe Miami didn’t go harder for this cat. That is surprising to me. If Brendan Haywood plays up to his contract, and Mahimi does what he needs to do, the Mavs have a great shot to repeat.

  • RunNGun

    Delonte went WEST. Go figure!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Cosign ALlenP — Does anyone know how big this contract was though?

  • Rizz

The Mav’s got BRANDAN WRIGHT who is an up and comer…Don’t sleep he can hold the 4 and 5 spot down AT 6 FT 10…Besides look around the leauge tell me how many dominant center are in the game besides maybe 1 or 2…Mav’s added lots of depth w/Vince, Delonte, Rudy and Lamar!

  • ChristianBulleN

I hope this is a redemption year for Vince Carter, though I’ve been saying that for the past 3 teams he’s played for, he knows this year he’s got an actual shot at doing something in the playoffs. I promise that the man can still ball and hope he is getting in peak physical shape this offseason, although he seems uninterested from what I’ve past seen… He could be the key for the Mavs this year if he takes sh*t serious.

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

@AllenP I think, even tho the story was never confirmed and they seemed cool after their playoff series, Lebron wants no parts of Delonte West on his team. It’d be a distraction, even if not on their part.

  • http://Slamonline.com Mars

i’m really looking forward to see Matrix and Vinsanity with Dirk…are you serious? And now Odom. The Mavs are one role player away from being the next dynasty.

  • http://Slamonline.com Mars

Damn. This article was about DWest. My bad Red. Delonte is the truth. Hope he stays away from Dirk’s mom though.
