Source: Lakers Contact Delonte West

by Tzvi Twersky | @ttwersky

Delonte West may be going Hollywood.

The 28-year-old free agent spent time during the lockout working on a self-produced reality show. Now, according to a knowledgeable source, the guard is entertaining calls from the Los Angeles Lakers.

If he were to sign with L.A., West, who spent the 2010-11 season with the Boston Celtics, would be reunited with Coach Mike Brown, who was the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers when West played there from 2008-10.

“I love Mike Brown,” West told SLAM when we spent time with him this past summer. “I mean, he’s a great guy. Too good. what else can you ask from a coach? He tried to do everything to keep everybody happy, keep the personalities happy [in Cleveland].”

Meanwhile, according to the same source, the Boston Celtics did not contact West on the first day that teams were allowed to reach out to players directly (though they have reached out to his representatives).

The combo-guard averaged 5.6 ppg and 2.7 apg in 24 games during an injury-riddled ’10-11 season for the Celtics. He upped that to 6.6 ppg in the Playoffs, including five straight double-figure scoring games against the Miami Heat in the Conference Semifinals.

West did his best during the lockout to address his tarnished image. Now he’d like a chance to do the same on the court.

“I know that any team that gets me next year will be making a great pickup,” West told SLAM this past summer. “I still have a chip on my shoulder, one, because I feel that I haven’t be compensated like the players I’m competing against; I can’t wait to show them that I deserve something. And, two, I got a chip on my shoulder because I just do. That’s how I live life.”

Wow, Lakers are really looking to overhaul the team.

the Ron Ron and Delonte Show….I’d watch every single episode

  • nbk Posted: Dec.6 at 10:49 am
He would fit in perfect with the needs of LA, Mia, & Chi.

  • megatron Posted: Dec.6 at 10:56 am
I think he would be perfect for LA… I hope he stays in boston

If Delonte really didn’t smash LeBron’s mom, they should be on the phone with Delonte right now.

  • T-Money Posted: Dec.6 at 11:40 am
besides the fake internet rumor thing, maybe bron just doesn’t feel like dealing with the antics in miami. remember when he wouldn’t leave his appartment or answer the phone during training camp his last year in cleveland? brian windhorst also routinely said that the cavs organization and beat writers went to great lengths to keep most of the weird stuff out of the public eye. he would flip out on people on an almost daily basis.

  • Allenp Posted: Dec.6 at 11:50 am
Those weren’t “antics” they were a sign of mental illness, from what I’ve gathered. Dude is bipolar, and like many bipolar people, he had times when he wouldn’t take his medication because he felt “better.” Then of course the symptoms come back, and he has problems.
From a basketball standpoint, dude is what Miami needs. They don’t have Mike Miller, and their bench scoring is almost non-existent. West comes in and gets you solid points and you can slide him to the one or two to get your team in its spots. He can even score in isos against many players in the League.
He says he’s on his meds. Everybody in Boston was cool with him, so it seems like a no-brainer to me.

Here come the Gloria James jokes…

  • nbk Posted: Dec.6 at 11:57 am
West could also start at PG for Miami, he would actually improve their team defense, and he would fit in perfect even without the ball. Not many guys in the league that can start at PG, guard PG’s, and still play off the ball the majority of the time on offense and be just as productive if not more than they would be otherwise.

    wire hanger

  • Kap Posted: Dec.6 at 12:04 pm
He could be LA’s solution at PG and at backup SG.

  • MikeC. Posted: Dec.6 at 12:16 pm
NY should be going after Delonte. He’s exactly the type of player they need. Versatile, tough, not only tries on D, but tries hard, and doesn’t seem to be intimidated by star players. Maybe he needs a clause in his contract. Something like “this contract is only guaranteed if you take your medication and check in with your doctor on a regular schedule.” Versatile, tough role players. Sounds like something playoff teams need.

  • Kap Posted: Dec.6 at 12:20 pm
They may also sign Kapono which is good because they now have guys to spread the floor because the 3pter was a major weakness for team last year especially in crunch time when they needed them. Devin Ebanks should also play a major role next year and I see Caracter has lose a significant amount of weight and could maybe be a Dejuan Blair, Paul Milsap type of player.

  • Allenp Posted: Dec.6 at 12:22 pm
Agree with Mike C. Unless his game has taken a drastic turn none of us are aware of, all the contenders should be contacting Delonte to see what he’s looking for contract wise.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • Ben Osborne Posted: Dec.6 at 12:53 pm
Nice report, Tzvi. Delonte would be a GREAT fit in LA.

  • lights out Posted: Dec.6 at 1:43 pm
yep. cosign Mike C. a good pickup for any team.

  • The Black Rick Kamla Posted: Dec.6 at 1:48 pm
@spit hot fiyah LOOOOOL….I’m a player Greg, if we gon play wit a sock we gon play wit a sock!!! lolololol Ch-Ch-Chipotlaaaaaaaaaay!!

  • JTaylor21 Posted: Dec.6 at 1:49 pm
I don’t care if he was plowing Bron’s mom, sister and girlfriend at the same time, he’s better than anything MIA has at the point.

  • LA Huey Posted: Dec.6 at 2:14 pm
Delonte fits Miami’s needs in the backcourt like a Glove. Chalmers, West, and Wade would be a damn good backcourt rotation.

  • swagg Posted: Dec.6 at 2:30 pm
lakers should go for him hard. and then go for Howard. I’ll take Delonte and Howard over just CP3

  • bike Posted: Dec.6 at 3:03 pm
West is a good guy and all but the Lakers should forget this. A bipolar guy on the same team with Artest is a prescription for disaster. The Lakers should be on the lookout for a younger version of Fisher..just a solid PG with leadership capabilities.

  • robb Posted: Dec.6 at 3:04 pm
@LA Huey at first I read “Delonte fists mami” lol I thought OK that’s way too graphic.

  • OTB Posted: Dec.6 at 3:31 pm
This would be a great pickup. However, as I learned from last year’s acquisitions of Steve Blake and Matt Barnes, its best to curb enthusiasm when a new player first joins a team off the bench.

  • LakeShow Posted: Dec.6 at 3:53 pm
^…Ya. I got allot of sh*t from peeps last year for saying Barnes and Blake were gunna be solid pick ups…. They weren’t lol.

  • MikeC. Posted: Dec.6 at 5:18 pm
Barnes got hit with injuries and Blake was lost in the triangle. They’ll both be better this year.

  • LA Huey Posted: Dec.6 at 5:42 pm
Barnes, Metta, and Delonte in the same locker room will be interesting.

  • LakeShow Posted: Dec.6 at 6:08 pm
Huey, don’t forget about Kobe in there also. He’s as insane as the others just in a more focused way.

  • LA Huey Posted: Dec.6 at 6:55 pm
LakeShow, Black Mamba is his own storyline. I do enjoy his frequent dismissals of Pau and Bynum’s opinions. I love to hate the guy, he’s such a character.

  • Heals Posted: Dec.6 at 7:10 pm
Nah he too legit for LALA land, their team and their fans…

  • meloman2.0 Posted: Dec.6 at 7:14 pm
didn’t he call out mike brown for not getting on lebron enough in Shaqs book?

  • Hobbes Posted: Dec.7 at 1:28 am
Keep Blake and get Baron Davis. And everybody hides ur mums from West.

  • ryan Posted: Dec.7 at 7:26 am
    delonte is quagmire of nba

  • kelvin Posted: Dec.7 at 6:18 pm
This would be a horrible signing for the Lakers !!! Everywhere he’s gone there has been trouble!! Plus….he wears his headband sideways !!!!

  • MARTY Posted: Dec.7 at 8:47 pm
Please leave him alone to continue dating LaBron’s mom… This guy is a journeyman 1st class & LA has enough tattoo’s without adding more… Seriously this guy is not going to do anything the players now on the team can’t do without him… WE NEED A REAL POINT GUARD

  • MARTY Posted: Dec.7 at 8:47 pm

In addition to a point guard we need to get rid of often out Andrew, trade World, Blake & Walton… Truth be told other then Kobe who has a NO TRADE contract everyone else needs to be on the block to improve this team for tomorrow, not today….

  • WayneD Posted: Dec.8 at 2:12 pm
West not needded. Imperative to get Paul and Howard.
