Tyson Chandler Thinks He’ll Leave the Dallas Mavericks

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

From Tyson Chandler’s point of view, he will not get a chance to help the Dallas Mavericks defend their NBA championship.

The free agent center is convinced he’ll be playing for an other team by the time the season kicks off.

Chandler doesn’t foresee a long-term deal of his liking coming from Mark Cuban, and expects to sign with another squad.

From ESPN:

In a surprise development on the first day that NBA teams and agents could start talking about new contracts, Tyson Chandler came away convinced that his time with the Dallas Mavericks is coming to an end. “I really think I’m going to be on a new team come training camp,” Chandler said Wednesday night. “I’m really taking a hard look at all of my options, trying to see what best suits me … I would like this to be settled by early next week. I want to be in camp with my new teammates as soon as possible.”

Chandler maintains that staying in Dallas has always been his first choice, but he expressed disappointment that the communication between the sides was minimal from the end of the NBA Finals in mid-June and the June 30 deadline for extensions. On Wednesday, when teams and agents were allowed to commence free-agent negotiations, NBA front office sources listed New Jersey, Golden State, Houston and Toronto as the teams chasing Chandler hardest. The Mavericks have likewise long maintained that bringing Chandler back is their No. 1 offseason priority and that they were reluctant to talk about an extension before July 1 because no one knew how drastic changes to the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement would be at that time.

Despite the new, restrictive CBA, some team will offer Tyson Chandler a monster deal. And with the Mavs looking to get under the cap next summer, they may balk at trying to match that (to say nothing of trying to re-up other free agents JJ Barea and Caron Butler.)

Interesting times ahead for the defending champs.

cuban will sign chandler and let barea and the other mavericks free agents leave. but i’m not sure that chandler wants to come back to dallas. he not going to the heat they don’t have any money for him.

  • T-Money

hard to believe. i think it’s posturing. cuban can still break the bank for him as i believe the new cap rules for re-signing your own free agents don’t enter into force until 2014.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

He could be the final piece to push the Thunder to the top.

  • thor

This is bad for both Dallas and Tyson.

I hear he will be getting near a max deal. I also hear New Jersey is moving Brook Lopez to the 4. I don’t know if those two things are related. But they are both stupid.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Brook Lopez is a 4 like Keith Bogans is a PG.

ok he still sucks its all about Miami!

lol I agree Eboy. But did you see the Billy King quote from yesterday? Also, when did the GM start to make positioning decisions?

He’d be a good fit in Golden State, but I’d like to see him come to Boston so Chris Paul can be lured to stay and sign (if rumors are true about a Rondo trade).

  • feez_22

hey dallas you hear that? oh ya thats your chances of going back to the finals lost in the wind. Erica Damiper Jr can now take the starting C spot. rofl…

  • bull22

i respect chandler for what he did with the mavs last year and getting them over the top and wont take nothing away from his defensive game. but neither him or nene are players you can build your franchise around.. both are second tier players at best that will be overpaid for their services. smells like two more joe johnsons on the herizon to me..

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Neither of them are getting Joe Johnson money. Well nobody is even allowed to get that much anymore, but they won’t be maxed out by anyone. If either of them do, then the Owners are making it blatantly obvious that the lockout was a sham

  • LA Huey

Definitely not a max player but I hope he goes to GState so I can have a decent enforcer in NBA Jam.

enuff wit’ the chicago bulls n all that 2012 champ talk, they ain’t winnin’ nuffin’…

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

Toronto? Man, Tyson is one of the most solid Centers in the league but I hope the Raptors don’t overpay him just cause Valanciunas won’t join the team until next year.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

overpaying for people like tyson chandler is how the League got a Lockout last time.
    He’s an older Joakim Noah.

  • Red

Angus learn to spell dummy, Go Bulls. Haha, I bet you’re a Celtics fan

  • Red

And what player would go to the Raptors? That franchise won’t ever get anywhere, I believe he’ll go to the Nets or Bobcats if they come calling.

  • http://nba.com GP23

    How about the Celtics??

TC in OKC would be scary. Imagine a defensive frontline of Ibaka/TC/KD and a JHarden/RWestbrook backcourt. OKC could rule the west for the next 5yrs with that lineup. First, they need to get rid of Perk. The guy doesn’t fit their playing style, he’s more of a half-court player while OKC flourishes in the open court.

Who the hell is Khalid? That’s moi. Fix your ish Slam.

  • matt

If Jordan wasn’t a dbag he would’ve been dealt to Toronto. However, now I do not want this guy. He was great with Dallas but he was playing in a contract year. Plus, there would be way too much overload of bigs in Toronto as there is already Amir,Bargs, and ED, plus JonasV in november 2011.

  • http://www.twitter.com/nflem41 Nicolas Fleming

JTaylor, if you don’t know who Khalid Salaam is, I vastly overestimated your SLAM knowledge.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Lol. Who the hell is Khalid?
One of the best writers SLAM ever had.
And what’s with all the Bulls stans?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Taylor hasn’t really been here that long in terms of commenting. Not surprised he doesn’t know every writer.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

It was a joke, sheeeeeeeeeeeeeit. Way to get your panties in a bunch, fellas.

  • http://nba.com GP23

Who has been commenting on here the longest I wonder??? But for real, the Celtics could use him for their last decent run for a chip!

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

As far as I remember the original originalswho commented regularly were Brad Long, AllenP, Betcats, Jukai, TADOne, and the writers, primarily Ryan Jones

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

If you google “wayback machine” and click on the Internet archive, then enter the SLAM website you can see the site how it looked from as far back as 1998.
    Pretty cool stuff.

  • T-Money

lol jtaylor. khalid is kinda goat-status around here. and okc HAD tc.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

Yea, T-Money’s right. OKC technically HAD Tyson Chandler, but because he failed a physical or something they didn’t want him.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

And speaking of that, the Raptors almost had Tyson Chandler as well. The trade with Calderon was almost complete, Chandler even posted on Twitter or something that he’s glad to play with Bosh then, MJ squashes the trade. Boo-urns.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Looks like I’ve upseted Slam’s hierarchy. Hopefully I won’t wake up with shattered backboard glass all over my bed.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    JTaylor is funny.

  • RunNGuN

There’s only one team… Tyson Chandler to the Knicks! Make it happen, Wal… Grunfield.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

I’d like to see him and Caron on the Clips, personally.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    speak of the devil

  • eZ

Tyson C. And nene are good complimentary pieces and deserve Perkins money, but i’m afraid some team will seriously overpay.

Every free agent is going to the Knicks people…

  • http://pickandpop.wordpress.com Tripset30

Big time, long-suffering Maverick fan here. Glad I don’t make any financial decisions for my favorite team, because even though he’s not anywhere close to a max player you can’t put a dollar amount on the effect he had on that team last season and I would break the bank to re-sign him. Sure, you can make a play at Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and (apparently as of today) Deron Williams next summer, who could probably help you win a championship. But you absolutely, positively KNOW you can win a title with Chandler because… well, it happened.

Barea and Butler, as much as I love those guys, can be replaced. But regardless of the new CBA, to splurge on Brendan Haywood and let Chandler walk in consecutive summers would be a travesty.

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

@LA Huey That’s only if NBA Jam finally decides to send out updates…

  • Jpops

chandler doesnt realize that jason kidd is the one who made him function!

Jtaylor you will wake up with a lit basketball in your bed and a Kobe Jersey nailed to your wall.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

The Mavericks don’t need Tyson Chandler to win a second championship. They just need a center as good or better…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Which they aren’t going to find.

  • BigBlue

Come to denver! there is already a good cast of talent surrounding the team, and with nene and k-mart gone managment will be working hard to find a new big man. not to mention they are also way under the cap limit so if they had to they could offer him a huge contract

  • DukeFromDeep

@Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer… The lockout’s over..Enough with the caps already!!

  • aotearaw

    NBA Jam, lol

  • DukeFromDeep

    im gay

  • LA Huey

@1982, they won’t update their rosters for this year’s edition but there’s no way EA can resist putting out another NBA Jam next year. I’ve been planning to hold off on buying another Jam until CP3, Deron, and Dwight settle down somewhere.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Co-sign niQ… The Raptors need to clear as much space as possible at the 4 and 5 spot. Ed Davis (for sure) and Jonas Valanciunas (question mark at this point, but well worth a try) are the future of this franchise. Can’t forget Demar DeRozan either, of course.

  • BBaller

Come to the Spurs, we need some size!!!! Blair and Splitter just won’t cut it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

    Cosign Wayno lol
