Valanciunas May Join Raptors This Year

There is a “small chance” that Jonas Valanciunas could join the Raptors this season. ESPN‘s Chad Ford reports that the 19-year-old’s current team, Lietuvos Rytas, failed to qualify for the Euroleague and will likely lose sponsorships, so they’re interested in a payday: “The Toronto Raptors drafted Jonas Valanciunas with the No. 5 pick in the 2011 NBA draft knowing it would be at least a year before he came to the NBA. But a source close to the team told ESPN.com on Saturday that there’s a small chance they might be able to get him this season. The source said that the team reached out to Valanciunas’ agent over the weekend to gauge the center’s interest in joining the Raptors in 2011-12. If Valanciunas has interest, the Toronto would have to work out a buyout with his team in Lithuania, Lietuvos Rytas. Valanciunas does not currently have an NBA buyout for this season in his overseas deal, but things have changed for Lietuvos Rytas over the past five months. They failed to qualify for the Euroleague this season and the team will likely lose critical sponsorship money. Given the current situation, they need money more than Valanciunas.”

    Do it!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Please don’t be cheap, Raptors. Get this guy ASAP.

  • gill

DO IT! Then the raptors don’t have to spend more on a 5 like chandler.

  • http://www.slamonline.com aman from arkansas

    the raptors need him

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca niQ

Wow! Sounds awesome!! But key word here is “small chance.” But still…!

  • Rainman

This guy has looked Solid in every bit of competition he’s been seen in, This would be a big pick up for Toronto.

  • http://slamonline.com greg

nah dont do it. tank and get a higher pick

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

If this happens then Toronto won the draft.

  • Breezy

Apparently the buyout would still mean that he has to play the rest of the year in Lithuania so I don’t think this will happen. Not impossible though, I presume.

Let’s get a top draft pick next year toronto

If this happens, Cleveland management will be shaking their heads.

Valanciunas coming early would be perfect for the Raptors who are tanking the season anyway, why not give him the starting Centre position, which is currently occupied by Bargnani who is naturally a PF, and let him develop while securing a high draft pick in next years draft.. Go Raptors!!

This would be dope for Raptors fans.
    This kid is the Anti-Bargnani.
Decent inside game, loves to rebound and block shots.

As much as I’d love to see him play I think the best thing for the Raptor’s and their fans is that he stays in Lithuania. Raptors throw a similar product on the court, resulting in the same outcome as last year (maybe slightly better due to development, new coach, etc) grab a top 5 draft pick in this year’s draft and let’s get this thing rolling.
    PG: ?
    SG: Demar Derozan
    SF: Harrison Barnes
    PF: Ed Davis
    C: Jonas Valanciunas

ghost that’s solid team right there. trade bargnani 4 a PG, maybe like Rondo nd big baby str8 for banana and Calderon

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

why the hell would the celtics do that MUBWAR?

  • http://ZOGS.COM ZOGS

  • Ben Ireland

Rondo’s an all-star… Bargnani isn’t worth him alone. Calderon is probably a little better than Big Baby, but enough for the Celtics to lose a point guard who has taken them to two Finals and a ring? Nope, not a chance in hell. I’d like them to continue tanking, get Barnes and trade Calderon for a decent pick in the draft, 13 or 14 maybe… Then trade someone else and get a high twentys pick. In this draft coming, two lottery picks could well be two superstars, and with a lineup of Barnes, DeRozan, Davis and Valuncunas, they could take the consistently under-rated Marshall with say the 21st pick, and become the North Carolina of the NBA… Push the tempo, a good point with no need to shoot feeding everyone else in their spots… At the LEAST, that would be an entertaining team to watch, no?

  • harold

    PG:Bayless 12ppg
    SG:DeRozan 19ppg
    SF:2012 1st rounder(Barnes,Lamb?) 15ppg
    PF:Bargnani 21ppg
    C:Valanciunas 7ppg
    6th:Davis 9ppg
that could be a really good team in a couple of years

  • matt

BC recently denied this rumour by saying the agreement with Jonas’ team is that he stays there for one season/year. He will be a raptors jersey in october/november 2012, playing his first game.

  • LA Huey

I believe in this kid and while I don’t believe he’ll add many more Ws for the Raps if he came over this season, he could add just enough to squander good lottery odds. Raptors should save their money and let his Euro team develop him for another year.

  • megatron

Yeah no need to rush him over, its not like they are going anywhere this year anyway. I know alot of people don’t think so but I actually think bayless could be a pg for the future as long as he keeps developing. A top 5 pick this year would be so sick

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

what about a Bargnani and Bayless for Rondo trade?

  • MikeC.

Barngnani isn’t a bad player. He’s just not a franchise cornerstone. He’s a little overpaid too.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

@teddy i think nba teams can only contribute half a mil for buyouts

    10 mil for 21p and 5r. overpaid by 6mil

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ spit hot fiyah: Yeah I forgot about that. I thought it was 5 mil or something. Hopefully they’ll take the 500 k, then…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Raptors fans need to stop picturing the team with Bargnani on it. Ed Davis is not a bench player–he needs to start and develop ASAP. You don’t need your Center chucking 3 pointers, but you also shouldn’t have your PF doing that either. Davis and Valaciunas give you actual defense and inside scoring. Davis didn’t play much last season but it was pretty evident how good he can be.

  • buschfire

As much as I would like Valaciunas to come over this year, I don’t see the point. we will need to fill the position with a cheap 1 year contract, maybe a pryzbilla type? I want the young team to develop. I think Bayless has a chance of getting better but its hard for me to see him as a starting point guard, coz his instinct is shoot first. I think he will forever be a good back up. We need to get rid of Caleron, it would be nice if we could package him in a deal that Jordan won’t nix. Otherwise we could use the new amnesty clause on him? Though he maybe a good vet to have in the locker room?

The Raps need to figure out what they are going to do at the SF position coz its jammed. Ed Davis, Amir Johnson, Bargnani, **Linas Kleiza…

I look forward to a short season where our young gunz can develop still do poorly enough to get a top 5 draft pick. wish there were more PG’s in the draft next year though, its mainly a bigger men kinda draft.

  • buschfire

**i meant theres a jam at the PF position….

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

ya’ll just gotta trade one of those pf’s for a decent center
