Carmelo Anthony: Knicks Players Support Mike D’Antoni 100%

As the New York Knicks’ season continues to spiral down the drain, calls for the firing of head coach Mike D’Antoni are intensifying (which he acknowledges is tough), but his players say they have his back. From the NY Daily News: “Just as Mike D’Antoni admitted that he is feeling some heat as his team spins out of control, the embattled Knicks’ coach got some support from Carmelo Anthony. ‘Any time teams are losing, that’s the first thing that comes to mind is the coach, but we don’t talk about that,’ Anthony said Monday in Greenburgh. ‘We support Mike 100%. He’s here with us, we’re here with him. We’re going to roll with that.’ Besides publicly supporting the coach, Anthony gave the Knicks hope that he could return soon, possibly Tuesday night when the Knicks host the Pistons. Anthony did not practice Monday. He has missed the last two games with right ankle, left wrist and right thumb injuries. Anthony will test the ankle in a workout before the shootaround Tuesday.”

D’Antoni is the right guy. The majority of his players aren’t. You can’t play SSOL with a ball stopper like Melo and with fake point guards like Douglas and Shumpert.

  • crooklyn

Seven seconds or less is a joke, 8 seconds to get over the half court line, 24 seconds to get a shot off, and you want to hurry up just to run back on defense. A defense that is basically clueless. Sorry, it just don’t make sense, D’antoni does deserve some props for stepping up and trying, just dealing with nyc and all of it’s ridiculous sports reporters, should earn him a pass. But the front office needs to make a decision, get a coach who not only knows how to coach both sides of the ball, but demands it from his players if they want to win.

  • robb

@RunNGun lol so what’s your suggestion? to change the whole roster so D’antoni can coach? That’s the team the Knicks have, if he doesn’t know how to use the players he’s got, he needs to go, it’s that simple.

  • RunNGun

Some of the players do need to go. This roster is so bad even if Phil Jackson came out of retirement, he couldn’t save them.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeLRym4Q-pg nbk

Crooklyn the idea is to get a shot quick enough that the other teams offense doesn’t set up, and too give yourself more shots at the basket. If you really have a better offensive team, then the 7 seconds or less offense is a great system. The problem is, the Knicks offense isn’t good at all. Carmelo is overrated. Amar’e is overrated. And Tyson Chandler is overpaid.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeLRym4Q-pg nbk

other teams defense* haha my bad.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

@nbk, I agree with most of what you said but would also like to add that Carmelo isn’t a good fit in that offensive system in the first place.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

yeah he’s an absolute ball stopper. Donnie Walsh and Mike D’Antoni knew that before they acquired him, neither guy wanted to give anything up to get him. but James Dolan had final say.

  • RunNGun

What NBK said about SSOL, Walsh, & D’Antoni. A’mare is okay in the system. To run SSOL, you need a good point guard like Nash (obviously) and athletic guys who can run up and down the floor all; not plodders and ball stoppers like Carmelo. Basically, you win with superior conditioning (and a ton of buckets) because the other team can’t keep up.

  • bull22

mike d antoni is gone before season is over, no matter how much support he gets. the quickshot offense will never win a championship.. GUARANTEED.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

And superior shooting. Which is what Gallinari and even Chandler provided that this team is lacking.

  • crooklyn

@nbk, superior shooting comes in part from open looks (the other part is hard work), which is what someone like amar’e, who is a post player should be providing as a result of doubling him or just people staying home on defense. I never wanted to see gallo or wilson go, but I can’t honestly say that they would be the difference. People also have got to stop with the “ifs” and “buts”. This is the team and this is what it is. They are pros and they need to act like it. As far as ssol goes, yeah you can get all the shots you want however quickly you can get them, but with no stops, you ain’t gonna win.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

weird how Phoenix did all that winning then.

  • crooklyn

What winning? Most wins in the regular season helps you get into the playoffs (which is everyones’ goal) but after that, most wins and $2.25 gets you a train ride in nyc. We ain’t looking for almost anymore here in nyc, we need a chip, LORD knows msg makes us pay like we do.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Lol, after making the playoffs once in a decade y’all still expect a title? You might as well just quit watching. Cuz you aren’t getting one of those anytime soon. (Atleast 5 years) And your last title was in what, 73? HAHAHA y’all are funny.

  • Darrin

Phoenix was fortunate enough NOT to have an ISO-baller like Carmelo.

  • AD

yall really think melo is overrated?

  • MeloMan15

Damn, a couple bad games and all the Melo haters come out of their closet. Some people simply don’t know basketball. Sure, Melo was playing bad, but he is far from NY’s biggest concern. Him and tyson have been the only constants

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Does Melo have a max contract? Did the Knicks give up half their roster for him? He’s severely overrated.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Yet that “ball stopper” is leading the Knicks in assist… That’s the new catchphrase these days when DISScussing the mess that is the Knicks, ball stopper. Bottom line, you got to build a system based on the pieces you have in place. You don’t force a square peg into a round hole. You don’t take Melo’s killer instinct away by telling him he’s shooting too much or that he’s a “ball stopper.” Kobe is a ball stopper too. So isn’t Wade. At the end of the day, I want the ball stopping in the hands of elite scorers who DEMAND the ball, not in the hands of mental midgets who pout because they’re not getting pick and rolls. The TRUTH is you don’t stand flat footed and watch the “ball stopper” in an isolation play, but rather you move around to try and create better spacing and the ball will likely find you on the first or second pass depending on what defensive looks you’re getting. As for Amar’e Softemire, he’s basically turning into Zydrunas Ilgauskas, a power foward marauding as a shooting guard. I’ve just about washed my hands with that mental midget. The last time I saw someone pout and check out of a game like Amar’e did versus the Nuggets the Saturday before last, was when Kobe stopped taking shots in game 7 vs. the Suns in the first round of the 2006 NBA Playoffs. I’d ship Amar’e and his big broken nose back to Orlando in a NY Minute if I could. He’s not a New Yorker. He only came to NY because the Knicks offered him the most money. I’m sick of that mouth piece spitting punk and his favorite coach Mr. Pringles. I want Phil Jackson and his triangle offense, and I want those “ball stoppers” Melo (Kobe) and Dwight (Shaq) in it. POW!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    oh lawd

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

I see nbk is still clowning. LOL!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

FACT: Pau Gasol > Amar’e Softemire

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Orange you realize Tyson Chandler is the reason D’Antoni has changed Amar’e offensive role right? He did an interview about it the other day. Basically the genius moves of the Knicks front office have handicapped the team, it’s coaches, and it’s players from going to their strengths. James Dolan has totally screwed the pooch on this one.

  • http://www.gil1906.com Pve84

Right, crucifying D’antoni is not the answer. If the Knicks can barely score 80 in a D’antoni offense how can they seriously be expected to score more under someone else?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@nbk: If Amar’e doesn’t change his attitude, then you got to move him and Tyson Chandler to Orlando for Dwight Howard and Hedo Turkoglu if that’s what Orlando wants. Maybe that’s what the Knicks intended all along. The Tyson Chandler acquisition could have been a chess move by the Knicks front office. I don’t know. I’m sick of the trade speculation. We shall see once March 1st gets here, which is the first day Tyson can be packaged in a trade with Amar’e to Orlando. That is the only trade I’d consider moving those two guys for. There is nothing else out there. Nets will never trade Deron Williams to the Knicks. It’s either things get right, or the Knicks get Dwight.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Nobody wants Amar’e and his uninsured knees. Bynum is a better trade piece by himself then Amar’e and Tyson.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

If Amare doesn’t change his attitude, the Knicks need to trade him for some expiring contracts, period! Stat looks like a spoiled brat on the floor who’s upset that he’s not the center of attention anymore. Trade him to Philly for Iggy and Jrue if anything. And Antoni ISN’T the right coach for this team. We have what should be a dominating front court that should AT LEAST be running over the lottery teams that’ve been whuppin our asses. I’ve been watching every Knick game since ’93 until now, so I know how it feels to watch winning seasons and losing season (especially in the last decade), but never have I experienced watching a disappointing season like this one. Melo might make one out of every 5 shots he’s taking, but at least he’s trying to put the ball in the bucket. Same can’t be said about Amare…

  • kareezy

@IAMORANGE4EVER You clearly are the smartest person to comment.People fail to realize the “ball stopper”Melo took the Nuggets to a Western Conference Final. In Denver Melo was allowed to play the same game as he is now and nuggets made the playoffs, his game never affected Nene’s game.As Orange said when Melo Iso his team mates need to try to get open not just stand there waiting to see what haoppens. You guys talking trash about Melo he was out for 2 games and nobody stepped up where was Amare the big waste of $ always complaining about touches he has now turned into a 6 11 shooting guard. In my opinion knicks should get rid of Amare and use that money to get a proper Point Guard and role players

  • Treshiq

@Crooklyn “Most wins and $2.25 gets you a train ride in NYC”….man that post was darn near poetic. Pretty good..pretty good….

  • BoWeezy24

I Wouldn’t Say Melo Is Overated, He Just Doesn’t Fit In With The SSOL Because Of His Style.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

no one wants Amare with that kind of price tag.

  • Treshiq

@Iamorangeforever Did you equate Melo to Kobe and Shaq to dwight? smh…I won’t disagree with the rest of your post as it is PURE fantasy…Pure FANTASY MAriah Carey ft ODB type stuff.. ( Jackson is coming out of retirement to coach the Knicks no way)Knicks have a better chance of acquiring pictures of Blue Ivy carter before getting Dwight and i reitterate, they aren’t getting Jackson outta retirement for Melo….He comes out of retirement for those who have remnants and strokes of genuis a la the G.O.A.T ( MJ for anyone questioning who that might be)(Kobe par example)…I don’t know what the Knicks problem is..I agree that telling Melo to stop being well…MELO is going to be detrimental but it again proves that MELO can thrive if the right pieces are around him. It goes to show that Denver didn’t have such bad surroundings after all (proven by the post MElo greatness we’ve been on) That Karl is a great coach that demands effort on both ends of the floor and that ISO ball sucks. IT was his GREATEST complaint about Anthony…it not only made him frustrated it influnced the play of others who weren’t as disciplined (J.R. Smith who felt he also had to go and Get “his”)..when it was good it was great…but when it was anything less than good it was a nightmare. Saw it first hand when we’d lose to sub .500 teams after blowing out contenders. It DOESN;T WORK CONSISTENTLY to “ball stop” or whatever you want to call it..”ball stopping for melo haters) ISO ball for those who know that it is really ball stopping but want to call it of a different name” and that problem is magnified with this discombobulated , disorganized, no chemistry “super team”….

    Oh orange! your back! lmfaooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • MLK4Life

Of course they do. Because he doesn’t care if they play defense or not. We all know Melo and Amar’e don’t want to play defense.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

^ That’s right baby, and breakin’ ankles!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Melo plays half the sport. He’s overrated everywhere that he gets paid north of $12M a season. Could you imagine paying Kevin Martin a max contract?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@kareezy you had me at, “You clearly are the smartest.” Thanks! :) lol

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@MLK4Life my 4:21 comment was intended for datkid.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

nbk, look in the mirror. As a SLAM commenter you’re like that mainstream “artist” whose voice only sounds good with auto-tune…OVERRATED!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@O I AGREE, IF STOUDEMIRE’S ATTITUDE DON’T CHANGE, SHIP HIS ARSE OUT!

  • bull22

glad you came back from your hiatus orange, as much as i hate your team but i picked them to be 3rd in conference after you guys signed chandler and carmelo said he was going to play hardcore defense.. so iam surprised at their lackluster 7-13 record but i do look forward to resuming our blood feud thursday night..

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

idk what that even means. I don’t merit any kind of rating at all. I comment on the internet. I’m not confused about how insignificant that is.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

What you got against midgets ORANGE?

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

wow. seriously Amare has done more for the Knicks than Melo.

  • Ismael

Di Antoni’s system ONLY works with Steve Nash. Period

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

His European championships beg the differ.

  • Justin G.

Ismael, you should amend that to his system only works with a good point guard. @kareezy, Melo didn’t take Denver to the WCF because of his offense. They got there because they played pretty good defense, something this Knicks team doesn’t do. It takes great heart and determination to play great defense and their top two guys just don’t have it

  • BBaller

Lets start with Phoenix where he had a decent playoff team but failed, then took over of a NY Knicks team that had potential but still did nothing great. George Karl has made the pieces work in Denver whilst Di Antonio’s new NY Knicks are crumbling. Bottom line is M Di is not a winning coach
(entertaining yes), he has had the players yet still failed. Time to go!!!!!
