Chris Paul to Pau Gasol: I’m Not One of Your Kids

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

Though it was certainly an entertaining, seesaw affair that more than lived up to the hype, one could argue that the best moments from last night’s Clippers/Lakers showdown had little to do with actual basketball.

We had plenty of hard fouls and cheap shots (highlighted by the Artist Formerly Known As Ron Artest hilariously wrestling Blake Griffin to the ground for no good reason), and things stayed testy between the two teams even when the final score was no longer in doubt.

As the Lakers put the finishing touches on a 96-91 win at home, Pau Gasol took exception to something Chris Paul said, and tapped the Clippers’ superstar point guard on his head. This enraged CP3, who tapped Gasol back while yapping away. Paul explained his side of the story to the media.

From the AP:

The game featured plenty of sharp play, including several moments of brilliance from [Kobe] Bryant and Blake Griffin, but also six technical fouls, plenty of extracurricular talk, and the ejection of the Lakers’ Josh McRoberts for scrapping with Reggie Evans. That’s all before Gasol’s postgame gesture prompted a furious response from Paul, who had four points and 12 assists for the Clippers in his return from a five-game absence because of a strained left hamstring. “He touched the top of my head, and I didn’t like that,” said Paul. “You know what I mean. I don’t know if Pau’s got kids, but don’t touch my head like I’m one of your kids. I don’t know what his intentions were, like, ‘I’ll treat him like little Chris.’ I don’t know if he’s got kids, but I’m not one of them.”

Gasol, who has no kids, insisted he was misunderstood. “I’m sorry he felt that way,” the Spanish 7-footer said. “I do that all the time with my teammates. Nothing mean about it.” When asked what Paul yelled at him after the game, Gasol called it “just trash.”

An amused Kobe Bryant — who also exchanged pleasantries with CP3 in the closing moments — chalked it all up to Chris Paul being “chippy”, which he appreciates and can relate to.

The third and final regular season installment of this turf war will take place on April 4th. And if we’re truly lucky, these two teams will get a chance to battle it out come Playoff time.

man this would be a great playoff battle

  • Da-Meat-Hook Posted: Jan.26 at 11:16 am
CP3 has that Napolean Complex, in a good way!

  • Niio Posted: Jan.26 at 11:18 am
kinda reminds me of the last time my auntie slapped the back of my head for no reason a few years back. I had to gets straight gangsta “Hey I’m a grown ass man now you can’t be slapping me across the head no more, I got a son now” lol

  • marc Posted: Jan.26 at 11:19 am
    lmfaoooo

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 11:20 am
Pau being an well traveled international player should understand that some people get offended by different gestures. There are whole countries where touching someone on the top of the head is the utmost display of disrespect.

  • JML-G Posted: Jan.26 at 11:25 am
Pau trying to be hard lately – it will come back to haunt him when he gets ethered in games and flops in final moments like always

  • don the GSW fan Posted: Jan.26 at 11:30 am
    cp3 too emotional. it was a post game handshake/man hug/non-verbal congratulary action…

  • robb Posted: Jan.26 at 11:33 am
Chris, being as competitive as he is, was fuming when they lost the game, then Kobe came along and started trash talking, by the time Gasol touched the top of his head the little guy was ready to explode. Pau is a good guy but tapping a small, chippy player on the head after he just lost a hard fought game wasn’t a good idea.

  • 23 Posted: Jan.26 at 11:34 am
ive seen gasol do this all the time. i always thought it was weird. but cp3 was just upset with the game, and the fact that hes alot smaller than gasol. cp3 is one of the most competitive dudes in the nba today. but also he gets mad quicka and can be a sore loser at times.

  • Rik Smits Mullet Posted: Jan.26 at 11:40 am
Come on chris paul its not like he touched you in an inappropriate place.
He was talking tough the whole way and then he got all gangster on pau.
An over reaction on Paul’s part.

  • Rik Smits Mullet Posted: Jan.26 at 11:43 am
    @nbk
As far as i know the USA is not one of those places.
Its more middle eastern countries and Muslim countries.
were they dont like it when you touch there heads.
But this has nothing to do with Chris Paul.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 11:47 am
It clearly does have to do with Chris Paul. I wasn’t saying this is Thailand or Vietnam, I was just saying, Pau should realize that different people find seemingly everyday things to be disrespectful. Obviously Chris Paul feels that way. So calling his personal feelings towards Pau’s own personal physical gesture “just trash” is where he was wrong. Not in touching Paul’s head, he should have just said, I didn’t know he would find that offensive. End of story.

  • bike Posted: Jan.26 at 12:05 pm
Chris was just mad because he can’t reach high enough to do the same to Pau.

  • megatron Posted: Jan.26 at 12:09 pm
I don’t know about you guys but I would have been just as mad as chris. To me that would be complete disrespect.

  • Pais Posted: Jan.26 at 12:11 pm
Pau knew what he was doing, it was intended to be patronizing but he probably didn’t expect that kind of reaction. It’s not an issue of cultural differences. An intense game, extremely competitive and the tension was high. If you were born before the 90′s then like me you probably loved this. For those claiming this is not a rivalry after last night I think you’ll have to rethink your opinion, this was awesome. I’m balling in Europe at the moment and the “Derby” (teams from the same town) is more common and BIG deal. Seeing as LA is the only city with two teams it’s great that the Clips are finally able to compete.

  • don Posted: Jan.26 at 12:16 pm
Clips will be a problem, come playoff time.

  • robb Posted: Jan.26 at 12:20 pm
so the Clippers suddenly have a good team and instantly it’s a rivalry? It’s not a rivalry, the Clippers won one pre season game and one regular game and lost yesterday. Lakers vs. Celtics is a rivalry. This is two teams from one city finally competing against each other after years of Lakers dominance. Let’s be objective here.

  • cardel Posted: Jan.26 at 12:21 pm
Spanish newspapers claim that Paul called Pau soft, and Pau responded by touching his head in a patronizing way… Gasol might be soft (I personally don’t think so), but he is hella smart.

  • Jai Posted: Jan.26 at 12:22 pm
CP3 needs that “tough little man” image. Nobody pulled that $hit with Isiah or Iverson.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 12:23 pm
yeah, this is just finally watchable. not a rivalry.

  • shutup Posted: Jan.26 at 12:23 pm
Pau did this to kinda son him, Chris got every reason to feel disrespected. Gimme a pound and keep it pushing, good game, thats it, all that extracurricular sh!t is uncalled for.

  • capostat Posted: Jan.26 at 12:26 pm
From what I read, it was CPaul who got in between a conversation that Kobe and Pau were having, trying to instigate something himself. I;ve noticed that CP3 does occasionally try and wedge himself between guys, and do stuff like that in deadball situations, just to be irritating. To me, Pau did what anyone would have done if annoyed in this manner. He countered with something he KNEW would be taken as disrespect and aggravate even more, a player who just lost a bitter match.

  • OTB Posted: Jan.26 at 12:29 pm
Pau was just being friendly; kind of like a “good game” gesture. He was just amused by CP3′s talking. When Paul hit him back is when Gasol actually got pissed, which he why he started talking trash back, and then gave him a bump and a “go home” point after the buzzer. CP3 is a little b*itch for overreacting.

  • LakerNation Posted: Jan.26 at 12:37 pm
The next game is going to be a dog fight!

  • Pais Posted: Jan.26 at 12:38 pm
Guys please, take the time to look up the definition of the word “rivalry”. Surely there can be different degrees. Perhaps it won’t go down as one of the better rivalries of all time but with all due respect to Kobe, it is unquestionably a rivalry. What other two teams have gone at it harder than the what we saw last night so far this season? Well regardless of what you want to call it, I’m glad to see real competitiveness in a league where it’s often hard to come by. @nbk – “just finally watchable” – jeez, do you like basketball or not?

  • Pais Posted: Jan.26 at 12:38 pm
Last night the NBA in general was pretty awesome.

  • OTB Posted: Jan.26 at 12:41 pm
If it’s a battle for basketball supremacy within a city, its a rivalry.

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Jan.26 at 12:43 pm
is there a clip of this somewhere?

  • Pais Posted: Jan.26 at 12:43 pm
@OTB – honestly I don’t know. No disrespect but I think that’s a little naive. The tension was running real high and I have serious doubts that Pau was just being friendly. I think CP3 understood it exactly how it was intended and due to being intensely competitive and not as you say “a little b*itch” he reacted the way he did. I wouldn’t want either of them to have done anything differently.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 12:44 pm
I love basketball. You can’t call 2 games a rivalry. The Clippers just became respectable. Let them figure out how to be consistently competitive before you call 2 regular season games a “rivalry” – that is disrespectful to fan bases that enjoy actual rivalries.

  • Nick Tha Quick Posted: Jan.26 at 12:45 pm
One of the many funny parts of the game was when Pau was scrapping with either Wedgie Evans or Blake and there was a lot of verbal going on, the Lakers announcer goes,” The game is getting really chippy but you know if Pau’s involved, it’s only be verbal. Pau’s not a fighter, he’s a lover!” Love Pau, but he kills me sometimes.

  • OTB Posted: Jan.26 at 12:48 pm
I don’t get the hate for Pau. He’s a smart guy – how many NBA players actually fight? Only the dumb ones. It’s a game. What the hell does it matter if you get into a fight to look hard when you’re likely going to lose $600, 000 and miss a bunch of games.

  • shutup Posted: Jan.26 at 12:51 pm
    RIVALRY- Noun:
Competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field. This is indeed a rivalry on many levels, just because it is now only getting competitive doesnt de-value it. Do you think when Cheryl Miller was beating Reggie consistently that it wasn’t a rivalry? Just because as he got older it became more competetive, didnt make it more of a rivalry.

  • tina Posted: Jan.26 at 12:53 pm
@nbk, a reporter asked what was said between paul & gasol. Gasol said it was just “trash talking between players”. Gasol was wrong by touching his head though. I can’t wait for their next meeting.

  • Hulahula Posted: Jan.26 at 12:57 pm
Typical i believe theyre hyping the lakers clippers feuds.interesting…

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 12:59 pm
my bad Tina, I totally misread that.

  • Pais Posted: Jan.26 at 1:00 pm
@nbk – I respectfully disagree. The number of games isn’t so important when you consider the backdrop. I’ll concede that the media may have to an extent overhyped this somewhat. But when you consider that they share not only the same city but also the same arena, combined with the clippers acquisition of CP3, a player the Lakers tried to get and would love to have. You better believe that there’s a degree of animosity between these two squads, the intensity and physicality of last nights game attests to that. Artest and Pau showed the kind of heart we haven’t seen in quite some time. I saw videos of LA natives adorned in red squared off against those in gold, surely you can concede it’s at least a budding rivalry, can you give me that at least?

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 1:01 pm
shutup, every basketball game there is, is a rivalry under that definition. Save me with the dictionary definition. If you don’t understand the differences between a real sports rivalry, 2 regular season games, and the definition of the word then I don’t expect you to understand much.

  • LakeShow Posted: Jan.26 at 1:01 pm
Pau found his MoJo last night… Pau was the man. Good to see he’s still got it.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 1:03 pm
Budding? Sure, it’s budding. It’s definitely must see TV, and the teams don’t like each other, obviously. So yes, a rivalry in the making, but not a rivalry. If someone asked you to name the NBA rivalries, you can’t honestly say would have Clippers/Lakers on that list

  • LakerNation Posted: Jan.26 at 1:09 pm
LOL Chris Paul tried to punk Gasol, but no haps….. Take that L young man and sit down!

  • Double J Posted: Jan.26 at 1:11 pm
You know this whole, “This is not a rivalry thing” kinda ticks me off. Let’s do some math here… LA Clippers stole CP3 from LAL after their trade was nixed by the chief… The entire county jumped on the Clipper bandwagon basically telling the Lakers they are now the JV squad… a preseason series revealed LAL’s weaknesses but some dirty play out of the Clips got them there… continued banter between players revealing some hard fought tension… and the first game had 6 techs, post-game trash talk, and a swing in the series win column… RIVALRY!!!!!! Battle LA is on.

  • Pais Posted: Jan.26 at 1:14 pm
It’s early days yet, agreed. But you raise an interesting point. Who would be on your list? If you ask me for a real sporting rivalry today I gotta look outside of basketball. ManU vs. Man City, Barca vs Real Madrid
I’m curious what needs to take place before it constitutes as a full fledged rivalry? At what point did lakers vs celtics become a rivalry and when did that stop, or is it still a rivalry?

  • Pais Posted: Jan.26 at 1:16 pm
    @Double J – cosign that sh*t

  • jimmer Posted: Jan.26 at 1:17 pm
@nbk – I’m pretty sure it’s just being referred to as a crosstown rivalry. Because it is. No one has yet claimed it is a great sports rivalry or rivalry of dynasties. You’ve rebuked a dictionary definition as arbritrary, but your own concept of the word is entirely singular, and depends on prefaces of ‘great’ or ‘sports’ usw, which no-one is really using. If they do meet in the playoffs, people will talk continually of ‘this developing rivalry’ or this ‘simmering rivalry’ and then you can glory in aggitation.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 1:23 pm
This is just like the stupid ass “Knicks Celtics rivalry” from last season. Y’all remember that?

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 1:26 pm
20 games into a season and you people are talking about a rivalry. Because these games even really matter. You think Kobe Bryant or Chris Paul would call this a “rivalry?” – answer that.

  • Mariano Posted: Jan.26 at 1:26 pm
Lol nbk why do all your posts sound as if you were mad? Every rivalry HAS to start somewhere, and IMO this is a good beginning

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 1:32 pm
lol idk why they come off as me being mad. I’m not at all, just trying to get the point across how ridiculous calling this a rivalry is. What the f*ck is everyone going to say if one of these teams doesn’t even make the playoffs? Is it really a rivalry if one team is a playoff team while the other is in the lottery? Are the Heat & Knicks still a rivalry even after a decade of the Knicks being horrid? How about the Knicks & Celtics? Is that even a rivalry? They at least played in the playoffs last year. How about the Suns & Lakers, is that still a rivalry? If you wanted to look at semantic things like a trade that didn’t go down for one team but happened for another, then aren’t the Thunder and Bobcats rivals after the Tyson Chandler deal? I’m sure they’ve played a close game or two since then. Players on each team probably even argued with each other. The only legitimate reason this is a budding rivalry is because both teams are similarly talented, and they play in the same city. Other then that, this is in no way a rivalry, or the start of one.

  • Pais Posted: Jan.26 at 1:35 pm
Just spoke to Kobe, he says “f*ck yeah it’s rivalry, I hate those punks”. Hang on, got Chris on the other line. What’s that?…word?…no way…yeah I’ll tell ‘em. Chris says “if I see those dudes in the street, it’s on”.

  • T-Money Posted: Jan.26 at 1:37 pm
nah this is classic passive-agressive pau. he knew very well that wouldn’t sit well with cp3. i wish he would just come out and say “yeah, he was talking trash and i sonned him”. it’s like when he said 2 weeks ago that he was amazed that kobe was scoring this much but almost as amazed that he could take this many shots… but of course, he had no problem with kobe shooting a lot. cmon son, go all the way.

  • Raseven7 Posted: Jan.26 at 1:38 pm
Chris is a sore loser that’s not the same as being a competitor and just because pau is a finesse player doesn’t make him a punk

  • Jai Posted: Jan.26 at 1:38 pm
This is where being a “good guy” hurts Chris Paul. Like i said, little guys need to act like they’re psychos on the court. Isiah was always ready to fight back and no one knew if A.I. had a chain hidden in those baggy shorts. You need to be meaner, Chris!

  • Allenp Posted: Jan.26 at 1:44 pm
Iverson almost never had beef with anyone.
He only jawed with Kobe like once in the Finals and in that case Kobe was the instigator. Other than that, I don’t remember dude getting into it with anyone after like his rookie year. People just gave him his respect and kept it moving.

  • AQWORD Posted: Jan.26 at 1:49 pm
LOL @ nbk in this thread who is getting his head palmed like a scully & is being annoyed by it JUST LIKE C.P ! I’d like to see Pau trying that weak $#it on Griffin. He’d be getting shanked & spanked & alleyooped….. word to ODB

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 1:53 pm
lol, AQ is here everyone. The king of reason. “AQWORD Posted: Jan.10 at 1:21 pm
DAMN. Is it just me or what. Chris Humphries could not dunk to save himself.” – (took one try to find something ridiculous.)

  • Lloyd Posted: Jan.26 at 1:54 pm
(Almost) every team in the NBA play to get wins because the win itself is what is valued. I think anytime two team MUTUALLY want to beat each other for any additional reasons besides just to get a win (or other statistucal purposes like higher seed positioning) can be constituted as a “rivalry”. There’s something personal and emotional about it…it’s not just another game. It’s just like when Kobe and Lebron go up against each other. Lebron’s squad almost always wins…it’s still a rivalry because those two guys have something to prove other than just getting the W in that instance. (refer to the article a couple of days back of Kobe sick of Lebron beating them) nbk- Is it a great and historical rivalry like the Celtics/Lakers yet? No, it doesn’t have that longevity yet. It’s just a young rivalry and incredibly fun to watch. No one would have doubted that Bill Russell’s Celtics and Jerry West’s Lakers going at it were a rivalry in the beginning. Am I comparing the Clippers/Lakers to them greats? No. Just saying that the amount of time passed doesn’t matter in terms of qualify matchups as “rivalries”

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 1:59 pm
Did you people call the Clippers and Lakers rivals when the Clippers were better from 05-07?

  • Lloyd Posted: Jan.26 at 1:59 pm
And if you go back and watch it, Paul was talking trash back and forth with Pau when Kobe came between them and said something. Paul kept saying “He’s soft!” (talking about Pau) and then Pau palmed his head in an effort to be condescending. Is it just me or does everytime Chris Paul try to talk garbage look like he’s about to cry?

  • burnt_chicken Posted: Jan.26 at 2:08 pm
regardless of sport, two clubs in the same town ARE ALWAYS GOING TO BE A RIVALRY. Unquestionably. It’s ridiculous to think otherwise.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 2:13 pm
In sports, you generally call a matchup a rivalry when each team has done something to hurt the other. Like eliminate them from the playoffs in a competitive series. Nobody is going to call them rivals the next time they play. Nobody is going to even call them rivals if they meet in the playoffs. Let them build some more animosity before we go labeling this a rivalry. That’s How I feel.

  • Marcelus Wallace Posted: Jan.26 at 2:15 pm
Pau said: “They were gonna trade me for u? Hahaha Little man…”

  • M Cho Posted: Jan.26 at 2:18 pm
This won’t be a rivalry until the Clips get a real coach. Vinnie Del Negro did everything to give that game away last night.

  • burnt_chicken Posted: Jan.26 at 2:27 pm
take, for example, manchester city and manchester united. Totally different sport, but very apt comparison. United has been great forever, City not so much. Even before City became very good, they were still very much rivals. Now that City is good, GREAT rivalry. THe proximity sets the stage. Different clubs in the same town usually divvy the fanbase along class lines, or differing neighbourhoods, etc so there is a lot at stake for those cheering.

  • burnt_chicken Posted: Jan.26 at 2:28 pm
To not view Clips-Lakers as a rivalry is just hating.

  • MLK4Life Posted: Jan.26 at 2:33 pm
Nbk is a little pissy biotch. Get a life chump. I bet chris paul wouldn’t try to punch world peace in the nuts

  • Heals Posted: Jan.26 at 2:41 pm
C’mon 4 v 5 or 3 v 6 first round match-up and I’m good for the whole playoffs. Oh yeah and it’s not a rivalry (yet), Clips fans don’t start that nonsense. Rivalries are forged over years during playoff series with legitimate consequences or when winning teams are continually playing each with something on the line. Just cause CP3 plays angry and there’s tension between the 2 teams doesn’t make this a rivalry (yet)…

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 2:43 pm
The Lakers and Clippers are not sharing a market, LA is Laker land. This is not like that. Can’t this just be an intruiging match-up. Calling it a rivalry implies they have actually played each other in a game that matters. Which hasn’t remotely happened yet.

  • Heals Posted: Jan.26 at 2:45 pm
Burnt you live LA, hell even if you do you’re wrong in this instance. Until the last 2 years Clips v LAL (Clips homecourt) has just been an opportunity for LAL fans to see their team play for less than half the $$$ it would be to see the LAL play anyone else…

  • LakeShow Posted: Jan.26 at 2:49 pm
The thing is though nbk, Heals, It is going to be a rivalry. There’s no chance of it not. The Clippers have good players locked up and the Lakers will always have good players. If you don’t want to call it a rivalry now that’s fine, but were all just saying the inevitable. Is it a legendary rivalry? No. Is it a dynasty rivalry? No. Is it two teams that share a city and an arena type rivalry? Yes. Call it what you want. It’s some form of a rivalry.

  • T-Ray Posted: Jan.26 at 2:52 pm
I gotta side with nbk. I live in LA and honestly the only people who are on the Clippers are their true supporters and a few bandwagon fans other than that it’s all purple and gold. Until the city is divided it’s not a rivalry. Also Pau is a b*tch for what he did. Too bad he didn’t use his “mojo” against Dirk last year maybe we would have one a game.

  • Pais Posted: Jan.26 at 2:54 pm
@nbk – “Nobody is going to call them rivals the next time they play”? – really? why don’t you google the words ‘LA rivalry’ and see what you get. Have you had a chance to check out the piece on NBA.com entitled ‘Rival arrival’? This is just silly at this point, I respect your right to an opinion of course, but without denoting the type or status of this rivalry, it is one plain and simple. This is not something which is subjective, it is a rivalry period. But holy sh*t do I admire your persistence.

  • Mike Mihalow Posted: Jan.26 at 2:57 pm
Chris Paul is just trying to bring Gasol down to his level (pun intended).

  • LakeShow Posted: Jan.26 at 2:57 pm
    LOL Pais…

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 2:58 pm
    Like I said earlier,
    .
    .
“Budding? Sure, it’s budding. It’s definitely must see TV, and the teams don’t like each other, obviously. So yes, a rivalry in the making, but not a rivalry. If someone asked you to name the NBA rivalries, you can’t honestly say would have Clippers/Lakers on that list”

  • LakeShow Posted: Jan.26 at 3:04 pm
Who would you say are rivals these days though nbk? There aren’t many. This is as much as any one else. It is more of a rivalry than Boston vs LA for now even…

  • Treshiq Posted: Jan.26 at 3:04 pm
MAN if feel Paul on this!!!! If i wear my hair in a puff ponytail( afro ponytail) i will get patted to death at work! It MAKES me the utmost angry…I don’t blame him..being patted or tapped on the head is jsut rude. How do you not know this?

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 3:05 pm
honestly, to think just because they play in LA and some guy trying to get eyeballs on his article called it a rivalry that is infact a rivalry is like me saying Santa exists, because they made that movie The Santa Clause and it came out on Christmas. It’s just entertainement, the Lakers have no reason to look at the Clippers as rivals, the Clippers have never even come close to threatening the Lakers standing as the top team in Los Angeles. They have just now come into the discussion as to which team is more talented, but they haven’t actually won anything. Calling this a rivalry right after the Clippers came together is the same as people who called the Heat title favorites last season right after they came together. There is no real merit to it. When you read that article on NBA(com) and nodded in approval, did you do the same thing when Jeff Van Gundy said the Heat would break the bulls single season win record? This kind of respect should be earned, not entitled.

  • Pais Posted: Jan.26 at 3:07 pm
@nbk – Somewhat pedantic, somewhat contradictory but whatever. I give up. Kharg island here I come.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 3:10 pm
Current NBA Rivalries? – Boston v Miami (more of a player rivalry though) – Boston v Chicago is a rivalry – Chicago v Miami is budding – Spurs v Mavericks are a rivalry. That’s about it currently imo. LA doesn’t really have a competitive “rival” at this point. They have only met Dallas in the playoffs (1) time in Kobe’s career, and didn’t win a single game, so I wouldn’t call that a rivalry. THe Lakers haven’t played the SPurs in the playoffs in almot a decade, so that isn’t a rivalry. The Celtics and Lakers are probably the closest thing the Lakers have to a rival, and that’s more a “only a rivalry if you don’t care at all about the players on the teams”

  • abaci Posted: Jan.26 at 3:11 pm
i dont think its a rivalry yet and CP3 is overrated

  • Michelle Posted: Jan.26 at 3:12 pm
Paul was already annoyed thats why he took expection to it. If he was winning the game then there would be no problem. BTW Gasol does this all the time to his teammates especially to Kobe. No disrespect intented. Chris was just pissed off because they lost

  • Heals Posted: Jan.26 at 3:14 pm
@Lake mos def, that’s why I kept dropping (yet). Quick side note Clips crowds are funny cause they’re mostly in street clothes. Since the team has no real history or greats nobody really has player jerseys, so instead of a team-colored crowd (see LAL home, Bulls, C’s, etc.), you get a blend of everything but team colors…

  • charliewinning Posted: Jan.26 at 3:15 pm
Pau knew what he was doing. Putting your hands on someone’s head is asking for it. It’s the same as calling a man ‘boy’. It’s intentionally condescending. Meant to make a man feel like less than a man; a non-equal.

  • Treshiq Posted: Jan.26 at 3:16 pm
Wow they’re playing basketball rude doesn’t matter..hahaha didn’t think that one through. LOL

You know what’s funny? How everyone HATED David Stern (media, and fans), and were calling for his retirement. Now everyone loves the fact that there’s new competitiveness between these two teams. Although it’s not Stern’s style to come out saying “You’re welcome”, you can bet that he’s basking in his apparent genius, and that he’s reveling in the fact that the media will be a little more timid in attempting to question/demean him anytime soon. He just has to look at a reporter, and they might feel themselves shrinking.

  • Heals Posted: Jan.26 at 3:26 pm
Paris just cause NBA.com says it and it is getting hits on google doesn’t mean it’s true. The media is all about sensation and causing a stir (look at this comment section for proof it works). As a responsible fan bk see’s that and calls BS on this topic as a whole. Calling it a rivalry at THIS point greatly diminishes how great the LAL have been and how truly dismal the Clips have been throughout their collective histories. However the LA v NO series, the CP3 no-trade, the CP3 trade, Kobe with something to prove and the LAL resentment of the Blake hype have in deed put this match-up in the carpool lane to a rivalry…

  • LakeShow Posted: Jan.26 at 3:30 pm
Well said Heals. Apple is an Apple. This is a apple sapling. Soon to be an apple tree. I’ll stop with the fruit analogy now.

  • OTB Posted: Jan.26 at 3:31 pm
@nbk – The Lakers played the Spurs in the 2008 WCF. Those two teams don’t hate each other, but the core players (TD, Manu, TP, Kobe) have been the same since a decade ago. It died a little when Phil left though.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 3:34 pm
    my bad OTB.

  • Pais Posted: Jan.26 at 3:37 pm
Paris – quite nice in the summer, capitol of France
    Pais – me, hello
My reference to the media was simply in response to the comment nbk made regarding ‘no one will call this a rivalry’, nbk’s a smart guy, he knew that. Fact is I didn’t even read the article. Whether by definition or popular opinion this can easily be called a rivalry. Things need to be taken in context, why can’t we simply make a distinction between a simple rivalry and “The Greatest NBA Rivalries of all Time”? It diminishes nothing, you’re getting entirely carried away at this point. You show your respect for the great rivalries by refusing acknowledge any rivalry that hasn’t pitted two teams against through playoffs over a period of…how many years does it take anyways? What’s the criteria, is there any? Absurd and redundant.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 3:43 pm
They need to play each other in games that matter to even start to consider this a rivalry. It’s that simple. – When I said nobody, I meant people that are not trying to get attention. This is as much of a “rivalry” as Duke & North Carolina State.

  • Pais Posted: Jan.26 at 3:49 pm
I guess I don’t qualify either, I’m always looking for attention.

  • Heals Posted: Jan.26 at 3:58 pm
@Pais, my bad hard to differentiate with the glare on my BB, but good sense of humor nonetheless. For me it’s all about stakes, for the LAL v LAC this is the first year with some stakes. The Clips shouldn’t get credit for how good the LAL have been, just cause they’re finally winning so what they’re not on LAL’s level. LAL are more of a rival with Dal RIGHT NOW, come playoff time that could switch. Naw dupe absurd would be using an article you haven’t even read to defend your claim or agreeing that since something is popular opinion (i.e. trending on the internet) is a ridiculous defense. You know what was trending Sun night? Kyle Williams death threats. So it’s all about context with this stuff. Appreciate your points, but my comments are far from redundant or absurd at this point. But enjoy the juice box and orange slices for your participation on this one. See now you’re even trying to qualify it by calling it a simple rivalry. It’s only a simple rivalry cause the Clips have simply sucked. If the LAL beat the Clips so what, if the Clips beat the LAL it’s a story. That’s not a rivalry, if the Clips take the season series, advance further in the playoffs and start getting more primetime games at Staples (LA heads know what I mean with the Clips and LAL sharing it) next year then we got a rivalry…

  • Pais Posted: Jan.26 at 4:17 pm
@Heals – Firstly, I couldn’t agree more in regards to the Clips historically being no where close to the Lakers.
Second, referencing the media was not intended to bolster my argument that this is a rivalry, it was a rebuttal to a single, solitary point made by nbk.
Third, apologies for not being clear. ‘Absurd’, is the idea that to acknowledge this as being rivalry diminishes anything. ‘Redundant’, is this entire debate.
Fourth, neither I nor anyone else has attempted to contend that this is anything beyond a simple rivalry.
And lastly, although I don’t have a juice box, I swear to you, I’m actually eating an orange right now (hilarious I know).

  • burnt_chicken Posted: Jan.26 at 4:17 pm
my nbk gem-o-the-day: “The Lakers and Clippers are not sharing a market, LA is Laker land. This is not like that” I’m guessing nbk is a demographer who uniquely understands the Los Angeles populace because of his years of rigorous study and in-depth work. Or at least he MUST be a guy who was born there and/or lives there and knows LA intimately, right? Right?

  • Drunyce Posted: Jan.26 at 4:20 pm
Actions speak louder than words. You’re ‘not one of his kids’, but your actions were CHILDish. Pau took the Clips to school last night. CP3 was clearly upset they lost the game. He should have been mad at Griffin for that matador defense Pau took advantage of.

  • Nicolas Fleming Posted: Jan.26 at 4:24 pm
Yeah, but is Chris one of Shawn Kemp’s kids?

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 4:34 pm
I know LA well enough to know for certain it’s Laker land. But if you need me to show you a comment from an LA resident then here, “T-Ray Posted: Jan.26 at 2:52 pm
I gotta side with nbk. I live in LA and honestly the only people who are on the Clippers are their true supporters and a few bandwagon fans other than that it’s all purple and gold. Until the city is divided it’s not a rivalry.”

  • Joey E. Posted: Jan.26 at 4:36 pm
    son’d him. hilarious

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 4:40 pm
For the record, it’ll be a rivalry before the city is divided, Because that will never happen. You can’t take the biggest basketball city in the US w/ some of the most diehard fans and ever expect that city to be divided. Really just need to have a competitive Lakers v Clippers playoff series. Or atleast a few games that affect playoff seeding, before the idea that this is a rivalry should even be entertained. And with that in mind, I’m done with this subject.

  • Heals Posted: Jan.26 at 4:51 pm
@Pais, damn you! I make an a$$whole remark and you still turn it against me cause you’re eating oranges. Appreciate the clarification on those terms and props on the back-and-forth, good stuff…

  • Heals Posted: Jan.26 at 4:55 pm
@Nic, almost missed that comment, glad I didn’t…

  • shutup Posted: Jan.26 at 4:59 pm
and santa clause does exist, just as much as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln perception is reality. The majority of the world perceives Clippers vs Lakers as a rivalry for many reasons, besides the fact that they’ve been called cross-town rivals for as long as I can remember. The rivalry is just getting competitive, so does that make it more of a rivalry? Are the different degrees of rivalhood? where is the threshold from potential rival to rival? because Giants v Jets has always been a rivalry and so has Yankees Mets even when one or both teams sucked.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 5:10 pm
“Santa Clause” is as real as Basil of Caesarea.
    .
    .
Saint Nicholas of Myra is who was real. And he wasn’t Santa Clause. – Yankees v Mets is a rivalry because they met in the world series in 2000. Previously to 1997 they had never played each other. Ever. – You know nothing about the Giants v Jets rivalry obviously, or you wouldn’t have mentioned it. The Jets were initially created in a smaller football league, and were literally marketed against the Giants. But the two teams don’t even play each other regularly, it’s not really a rivalry among teams anymore, it’s a rivalry among fans.
    .
Which the Clippers don’t have a comparable amount of. Definitely not enough to merit a fan rivalry in LA. – next

  • Kevin Posted: Jan.26 at 5:11 pm
Chris Paul has been known to punch people in the groin…..Pau dont want them problems

  • ab40 Posted: Jan.26 at 5:17 pm
napoleon syndrome mixed with Black Dynamite= CP3 = Napoleon Dynamite

  • shutup Posted: Jan.26 at 5:40 pm
So then jesus isnt real either by your standards, I was really trying to approach it existentially, as a matter of perception and impact in reality thus he’s real. I could’ve swore Jets played the Giants this year, a game in which words were exchanged and did impact playoff standing, the Yankees dont have a rivalry with the diamond backs but they met in the world series, the yankees mets is a rivalry because they divide a fan base and its not 50/50, NY has more Yankee fans than Mets fans. Its a big bro lil bro thing. You can sit there and think you know more about basketball all you want but please dont try to explain how ny teams arent rivals to a life long New Yorker.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 5:51 pm
I just said both were rivals. The Yankess and Mets only since 2000 have they actually been “rivals” – since they played in the world series and will play each other every single year (2 things that make it a rivalry, not just a series, like it was against the Diamondbacks) – And the Giants and Jets are “rivals” but it’s more about the fans then the actual players because the teams don’t play yearly (their next meeting is 2015). The problem here is your reading comprehension.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 6:14 pm
Existentially, as a matter of Perception and Impact? That would make the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy real. (Experiences during our lives that affect our existence, – Putting a tooth under your pillow, searching for eggs hidden by a rabbit). So yes, in terms of your life experience your right, they are real. As real as the Lakers v Clippers rivalry.

  • shutup Posted: Jan.26 at 6:32 pm
The Easter bunny is more of a convoluted metaphor, Santa Claus has transcended allegory a long time ago. As for the tooth fairy have you ever seen the tooth fairy? I argue the fact that every year Santa Claus can be spotted at every major mall and likenesses of him are spread worldwide that he does truly exist. Yankees fans would disagree with your perception of the rivalry and your words do your own argument injustice, if fans can be rivals in your words than there has been a long standing fan rivalry predating the Yankees mets world series. There are many different types of rivalries and yes the Lakers Clippers fall into the classification on various points. Even though the teams may not verbally acknowledge it, it can be clearly seen in the intensity of the games that have been played, no matter how insignificant they may seem, as a student of the game (as you have called yourself) you have to see the posturing in these games for dominance. The fact that you state this could be a rivalry is posturing on your part as well, you deny rivalry status but clearly state its must see tv. Slightly hypocritical, as it has been mentioned earleir, not only do they play in the same city and arena but they both tried to acquire the same player, which made one team worse (losing LO and team dissension) but also made the other team better. Also the fact that these teams are #1 and 2 for draws at opponents arenas they are also close in record. I ask you to name a more pertinent matchup in the landscape of the NBA today.

  • shutup Posted: Jan.26 at 6:38 pm
OH and with Kobe and Chris Paul being arguably the two most competitive players gives the rivalry another layer, and at the end of the game you can clearly see relief on the Lakers faces as was evident in World Peace’s jubilation, and the juxtapose in Paul’s and the rest of the Clippers frustration. Ogre’s are like onions, and so are rivalries. That’ll do donkey, that’ll do.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 6:39 pm
It’s a rivalry because the Lakers were happy and Paul was pissed. So Indiana and Chicago is the biggest rivalry in the league. Got it.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 6:41 pm
Nothin significant has happened in the matchup. It’s not a rivalry. Have fun with Santa clause.

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.26 at 7:12 pm
Rivalry!!! No rivalry!!!! Who the hell cares?!?! Now, where is that damn Easter Bunny?!

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.26 at 7:14 pm
Now, if Chris were to have punched Pau in his nuts, then some sort of rivalry definitely would have started!

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 7:22 pm
Lmao good to have you back TAD

  • shutup Posted: Jan.26 at 7:40 pm
So your saying the acquisition of Paul and the rise of the Clippers are insignificant, coupled with the decline of the Lakers and the emergence of Blake Griffin, also the fact that the Clippers are probably going to make the playoffs while LA has a chance of not making are meaningless as well. Got it. and Indiana Chicago by your definition might be considered a rivalry, significant playoff series hard fought with a lot of trash talk, arent those the criteria you laid out, so by your definition thats more of a rivalry than Clippers Lakers. Good example of your hypocrisy

  • Joey E. Posted: Jan.26 at 7:41 pm
Someone needs to get Paul Pierce’s big-ass a wheelchair.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 7:54 pm
Lol your as dense as a rock shutup. And you don’t read very well either. You can call them rivals all you want. You can misread my comments and create a conclusion from that all you want to. Fighting you is pointless.

  • shutup Posted: Jan.26 at 8:05 pm
So you admit defeat, I accept your resignation, as you were. lmao. Not to start another argument but not all rocks are dense, as I have learned in my geological endeavors.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 8:12 pm
Glad to see you got the point.

  • charliewinning Posted: Jan.26 at 8:25 pm
No matter how few times the teams play, Giants/Jets will always be a rivalry just like Yankees/Mets has been a rivalry for years. The Clippers/Lakers don’t like each other and it’s a rivalry. Some rivalries are one sided but they are rivalries nonetheless. Not everything fits the strict definitions of the slam heads. Doesn’t mean the opinions here are end all be all smdh.

  • datkid Posted: Jan.26 at 9:04 pm
shut up lives to prove nbk wrong I see.

  • omphalos Posted: Jan.26 at 9:52 pm
As a PG, I’d feel very patronised if a 7 footer was patting me on the head after the game. Paul was right to feel disrespected, it doesn’t matter if Pau does that to his teammates, doing that to a much shorter opponent is belittling.

  • Darksaber Posted: Jan.26 at 9:56 pm
Oh you guys, you get too caught up in one (badly executed) game. You need to get caught up in nature, like i dunno, Majestic Galloping Unicorns, perhaps. Speaking of animals and mythology, this clip made my day:
    http://youtu.be/6ntDYjS0Y3w

  • BallisLove Posted: Jan.27 at 12:11 am
I wouldnt mind if my hair was short

  • anen Posted: Jan.27 at 12:14 am
Pau does that all the time with National Teammates Ricky Rubio and his bro Marc Gasol, neither of them seem to mind.
I guess I can understand where CP3 was coming from, but that doesn’t explain why he acted like such a DRAMA QUEEN, Maybe cause they were LOOSING. CP3 was being a sore loser plain an simple.

  • shutup Posted: Jan.27 at 2:27 am
LOOSING? Nah he wasnt acting like a drama queen and if he wants to touch lil boys or his brother like that then thats fine but he should know after a heated loss that Paul would be mad at LOSING and touching another man in a condescending way would cause ill will, then being dismissive after the fact instead of being apologetic would only make the situation worse.

  • Niyagirlfresh Posted: Jan.27 at 3:35 am
It’s NOT a rivarly, one team is NOT successful the other team is legendary in the success department. Bostom vs. Lakers is a rivarly similar history between this two. This is nothing more than overhyped hoopla because of that trade for Laker/Clipper haters/fans to enjoy and get gitty over like school girls.

  • Joey E. Posted: Jan.27 at 3:40 am
ok, literally multiple times someone uses my name to say “someone needs to get Paul-Pierces big ass a wheelchair”. This is the 3rd time I’ve seen this. who are you? it’s not me

  • jimmer Posted: Jan.27 at 5:31 am
Is NBK drunk? Self appointed guardian of the integrity of the genuine sporting rivalry, an integrity which does not allow any other degree of the noun ‘rivalry’ to exist. At this point, it’s a crosstown rivalry, simple as, but you’ve even managed to claim that the Clippers might as well not be from LA cos no-one cares about them! Way to bend facts into your own one-track single-minded definition. Amazing stuff.

  • ;camvsmanu Posted: Jan.27 at 8:27 am
    yo !

  • nbk Posted: Jan.27 at 12:27 pm
Never told a single person they were wrong. I was clear this was my opinion, “nbk Posted: Jan.26 at 2:13 pm
That’s How I feel.”

  • aaa Posted: Jan.27 at 11:16 pm
Cp disrespected pau the whole game and down the court then feels emotionally scarred by pau treating him like a punk. If he doesn’t want his feelings hurt he should get a pacifier so he will shut his mouth. Gasol was just telling him to stop his chihuahua routine.

  • Mr B Posted: Jan.30 at 4:33 pm
Paul hates the fact that he is short. Like to run into people when he has the ball and cry for a foul. Just watch him play. They players all know this. That is where I got my info. from. Pau does this to a lot of players including his team mates but Paul is a little men and like so many little men, well, you know the rest.
