Dwight Howard on the Dunk Contest: ‘I’m Too Old for That’

Dwight Howard last competed in the All-Star Weekend event in 2009, and you probably shouldn’t expect him to take part in it ever again. From the Orlando Sentinel: “Howard has not changed his mind about next month’s NBA dunk contest at Amway Center. He still is retired from the event. Asked Wednesday if he would compete in the contest Feb. 25, the night before the All-Star Game, Howard dismissed the idea. ‘I’m too old for that,’ Howard responded. During the 2009-10 season, Howard said he was done with the contest. He has said he wants to cut down on the wear-and-tear on his legs. He also has said it’s difficult to come up with original ideas for the event. Howard competed in 2007, 2008 and 2009. In 2008, he won the contest when he took off his Magic jersey to reveal a Superman T-shirt and also donned a Superman cape. In 2009, he finished as the runner-up to Nate Robinson, who wore the New York Knicks’ green jersey and jumped over Howard during the final found.”

He’s absolutely right-this is what? His eighth season? Although I don’t see how a few nights of extra dunking for practice hurts him in the long run, but he knows his body better than most people (including myself) so I’ll just go with it.

He’s made a show in the contest. I really like how he is beasting this season.

We’ve had Derozan allready, I was thinking about him too since he should have won it allready.

  • robb

Derozan needs to compete again. Without those dumb props Demar wins.

  • Heals

Too old, really? The guy who was wearing a cape, using a phone booth and stickers is suddenly too old for it. Naw you’re just out of gimmicks big man, but it’s all good you paid your dues unlike some other popular high-flying superstars…

  • Bravo

If derozan s there again he has to win. He dunks with flare and passion. Blake just copies and steal dunk ideas

  • Riggs

@Heals: remember when you watched cartoons one year and then the next you were too old to watch it?…..yeah.

  • Riggs

btw not saying youre a kid, just saying its almost the same.

  • ugly_fish

KIA and the NBA wouldn’t let Blake Griffin lose last year. Dunk contest is fixed and is a complete joke.

  • Everynowhere

tell him the winner gets a McDonald’s meal.

  • bike

Dwight always sucked in the dunk contests. Too much immature, gimmicky s@#t.

  • Brahsef

Just get rid of fan voting. Pleeaaaase

  • golakeshow

This sucks. The dunk contest is really lame now. For some weird reason none of the stars do it anymore. Could you imagine a dunk contest with kobe, dwight, lebron and carmelo? The last good one like that is jordan vs. dominique wilkens. But the one this year will probably be blake griffin, Brandon Jennings, josh mcroberts, and maybe that loser shannon brown.

Golakeshow, all 4 of the people you mentioned would get ate up in a real dunk contest with the younger athletes we have in the league now.. guys like Griffin and Terrence Williams and Derrick Williams can honestly put up better dunks than any of the 4 you mentioned (maybe not Lebron, but even he seems to have lost a few inches off the vert). If people only want to see big names, then the dunks in the contest would suffer. It’s all irrelevant anyway though if you wanna see some real dunks youtube teamflightbrothers for a few minutes..

  • Heals

I hear ya riggs. The NBA is literally too old in the decision making areas to get this going again. They need to snag 3-4 street guys/d-leaguers i.e. James White, Kenny (I forgot his name) from K1x and team flight bros (?) and the 720/and1 cat (Airupthere?). In LA they even had LBJ and other retired players judging AirupThere and 3 other guys in a contest before the actual one. That’s one squad, then snag 3-4 NBAer’s for the other. Street’s v Pro’s team comp plus award best overall dunk to someone…

  • tomtom

cosign @bike NEEDED TO BE SAID!

  • MikeC.

I wouldn’t want to see Carmelo in a dunk contest. I think he’d do very well in a 17-foot jumpshot contest. He’d also do very well in a “who can hit a layup off a postup spin-move while getting fouled by 3 guys” contest. However, he’d be a runaway winner in a “man this game would be so much easier if we had a bench and a point guard” contest.

  • Cameron

    @Mike C…I think someone doesn’t like Melo

  • BuzzerBeater

No disrespect but is anyone else tired of seeing short players like Nate doing jams that taller players can easily accomplish but he get awarded because of the difficulty involved due to lack of height? I was so turned off by the contest whenever Nate was involved.. but maybe that’s just me.

  • Hanoon

if kwame brown enters the dunk contest, would that resurrect his NBA career?

^either that or the nba might be a done deal

They Need To Get DeAndre Jordan In The Dunk Contest This Year, That Mans Got Hops

  • WarriorsFan07

Please Please Please … anyone thats good enter the dunk contest. Just not Derozan or Shannon Brown. Derozan copied every single dunk he did in the McDonald’s All-American Slam Dunk Contest. Just a waste of time and lazy. And Shannon …… just stick to fast breaks.

  • Andrew

I agree with DeAndre Jordan for the dunk contest. I’d love to see what he could do with some time to prepare his dunk.
