Former NBA Star Jayson Williams Known as ‘Moses of Rikers’ in Jail

Jayson Williams, the former NBA star currently serving a one-year DWI bid (he also served 18 months for aggravated assault), is apparently a converted man. Reports the NY Post: “Christopher Hughes, who was incarcerated at Rikers for 100 days with the former New Jersey Net, tells us the baller is beloved by all behind bars with him, from crackheads to gangbangers. ‘People treat him like a star,’ said Hughes, who was released from Rikers last week after serving time for reckless assault. ‘Every single person shakes his hand. He is like Moses, the Moses of Rikers.’ He described how Williams, 43, attends church and leads Bible-study classes every day. ‘Jayson would sign people’s Bibles,’ Hughes told us. ‘I would ask him why, and he’d say, ‘Fake it till you make it.’ I thought he was saying, ‘If I can get them in the door through this signature, then at least I got them in the room to see Christ.’ Williams worked as a suicide-prevention assistant for a week on the midnight shift, to help inmates who were contemplating killing themselves, Hughes told us. Jayson, also a former Philadelphia 76er, who receives ‘tons’ of mail and spends four hours a day writing back, is also penning a second book, ‘Humbled,’ which includes the bombshell that he was sexually abused as a child. ‘It’s raw,’ said Hughes, who read excerpts while in prison.”

everytime I read something about Jayson Williams i always think two things: he wrote one of the most hilarious sports books in basketball, Loose Balls (not to be confused with the brilliant ABA book), but that same guy also shot a man. After reading this article I hope for the guy he can get his life back on track when he gets out.

    is loose balls worth reading?

  • scomp

off topic but the sixers were mentioned here, and i don’t currently see an article on the amare to sixers trade rumor. the sixers need to find a way to trade for amare and not give up thad, lou, or turner. if the sixers trade one of these guys its over for them. i dont see them making the playoffs because all 3 of these players are vital for a trip to the finals one day. if the sixers trade one of these guys i will stop watching basketall all together. please sixers management lets be smart here.

@Gerard that’s exactly what I think every time I see JW’s name. Loose Balls was definitely hilarious, and a fun read…but dude shot a guy. I’m torn. But it sounds like his life is turning around.

@ Spit- I really enjoyed Loose balls when I read it about 10 years ago, he shares alot of funny stories about the NBA.. But didn’t this guy shoot/kill his driver a few years back??

  • Joe

love when people brag about connections to prison

  • http://nba.com/celtics lights out

yes, he shot and killed his driver. but it was an accident. yes, it was a stupid accident, since he’d been drinking and then decided to go show his buddies his gun collection, but it was still an accident.

^^ JW didn’t go to jail for just killing a guy by “accident”. He tried to cover it up and say it was a crazy suicide or something. A guy admitting a manslaughter is different than a guy who tries to lie about it and use his money to get lawyers who will beat the system.

    S/O Jackson Vahue.

  • Do Work

exactly, his time in prison is more for the attempted cover-up of the whole incident than the shooting. had he been honest to start with things probably would’ve been a little better for him.

I stand corrected, M Cho. did not know that. damn.

He was one of my favorite players when I was in high school and his book is still one of my favorites. I was very disappointed at what happened and hopefully he is a changed man. I don’t think he should be treated like OJ. I hope everything turns out ok for him and his family but I also feel bad for the family of his driver.

btw when he was on mtv cribs it was epic

Yeah his estate is crazy. Buy the fact that the shooting was an accident gets thrown ou the window with the attempted cover up. Its a shame not one of those dudes in there stopped and said “hey guys, this is a really dumb idea, lets get an ambulance in here asap!”
