Hawks’ Ivan Johnson: ‘I Don’t Really Watch Basketball’

Atlanta Hawks forward Ivan Johnson, who’s become something of a sensation with amateur comedians on Twitter, tells the AJC that he’s not intimidated by NBA players because he has no clue who many of them are. Awesome: “Forgive Ivan Johnson if he doesn’t know exactly who he is playing against. It didn’t matter to the 27-year-old rookie when he was in training camps with the Hawks trying to make their roster. It doesn’t matter now when he’s making an impact at the NBA level. ‘My thing is, I don’t really watch basketball so I don’t know who anybody is,’ Johnson said after sinking two free throws with 4.6 seconds left to give the Hawks a 93-91 victory over the Timberwolves Saturday. ‘So when I match up against them, they are a regular player. I know the major players like LeBron [James], Kobe [Bryant], [Dwyane] Wade but all the extra ones I don’t know. Even if I did know them, I’m not going to be afraid. We are playing basketball.’ [...] ‘I’m very intrigued with him,’ coach Larry Drew said Sunday. ‘I like the energy that he brings. He plays hard. He goes after the ball on the glass. He plays with a physicality. I’ve been preaching that with our big guys from day one. If he keeps playing like he’s playing, I’m going to have to find more minutes for him.’”

    That is too awesome…

  • Wendy

I dunno whether it is good advertisement for Ivan to reveal that he is not really a “student of the game”. The anti-Ginobilli, so to speak. Which will explain why he is a 27-year-old rookie.

  • http://anyoldthing Ugh

Meanwhile, your studentship of the game has your career highlight so far as posting on Slam’s comments section, Wendy. Going with Ivan Johnson, sorry.

get real. josh smith is a BEAST and is one of THE BEST players to watch. just shows u know nothing about the hawks. and ivan isnt going anywhere. he has already stated atlanta is his team of choice and city to live. so that’s that hater. no al horford and we’ve won 3 in row. and we haven’t even got kevin hindrich back yet. it’s only gonna get better.

  • T-Ray

I think he is DeShawn Stevenson’s older brother and possibly Joe Smith’s long lost child.

All I know is that he’s becoming a fan favorite in Atlanta. He’s out of Cal-State San Bernardino…about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. It’s about time one of our players made it to the NBA. Go YOTES!!!! (Coyotes)Yes, I’m looking to buy his jersey. He’s got an awesome number 44.

If i’m a rookie in a new city then i’m gonna say whatever it takes to make the press warm to me. He’s already got a bad rep overseas and no doubt the Hawks have guided him through what to say to the media. I was just saying that he couldn’t stick with a college and played in Puerto Rico, China and was banned in South Korea with none of them lasting more than a season so I can’t see him staying long.

Also, I know enough about the Hawks to know that the dude ain’t called Kevin!
