John Wall on the Wizards: ‘It Could Get Ugly This Whole Season’

The Washington Wizards missed 12 straight shots to start the game against Orlando last night, leading to a loss that punctuated the worst start in franchise history, and everyone on the team is sad (including the owner, who blogged about the ongoing debacle.) From the WaPo: “If there was any wonder why the Wizards entered the game ranking last in the NBA in scoring and offensive efficiency, the first five minutes was an classic example of how poorly they have looked on that end of the floor all season. The shot selection was suspect, the ball movement was non-existent, except for some questionable passes. ‘It’s like everybody blanks out,’ John Wall said after the Wizards lost, 103-85, at Amway Center and set a new franchise record by opening the season with six losses. ‘Everybody going for their own. And we don’t have anybody on our team that can just go get his own bucket whenever. You see everybody being selfish on the offensive end and on the defensive end, we’re not trusting each other … If we don’t find a way to play together and win games, it could get ugly this whole season.’ [...] ‘You can’t even judge where we’re at,’ Coach Flip Saunders said. ‘We’re getting off to such bad starts. You’re 0-12 to start the game, it sucks the energy out of you. You fall behind so much, you can’t see where you’re at. What happens is, when things go bad, everyone thinks they are going to do it themselves.’ The energy level of the Wizards appeared to get deducted with each miss, as players lowered their heads and wanted to just fast-forward to the conclusion. The body language on the floor was beyond terrible. ‘Nobody came to compete. To me, we didn’t even come out playing hard,’ [Rashard] Lewis said in his embarrassing return to Orlando. ‘I know that Orlando Magic team. And to me, they played pretty well, but they didn’t play nearly as hard as they should have. The game was easy for them tonight. We went through the motions and nobody competed.’ The Wizards shot a season-low 36.6 percent, taking their field goal percentage down to 39.2 percent for the season. The New Jersey Nets are the only other team in the league is shooting below 40 percent. ‘Right now, we playing as individuals and we got to change it ASAP,’ Jordan Crawford said.”

John Wall before the season; “We could make the playoffs” lololol

  • MikeC.

Poor offensive execution? Sounds like an issue with the coach and/or the PG.

  • Ldub20

Poor offense comes from the “offense” not one particular player. There were too many times when it was just one pass and then a shot. Unfortunately thats how many games go. You get down and 1 person tries to be the hero. Chemistry is huge in any sport. Wizards dont have that right now. Coach as part of the blame, but the dudes on the court have to be able to find it within themselves.

  • Jono

John Wall not looking so special anymore is he….so overrated.

  • Jay

^ way too early in his career to judge him, and he’s on an awful roster, but I agree he’s been very disappointing so far in his career. Doesn’t seem to be much of a leader either.

  • http://www.nba.com showtime

Its not wall fault really, when you have a bunch of knucle heads this happens. when he out theirs no excuation or play calling. Ive seen numerous times crawford, Andre B. and Young just host the shot at the rim running off 14 sec of the shot clock going one on one or turnover the ball. KId ceiling is still high

  • BlackStar

And this is why you can’t get too excited about all that nonsense that happened during the summer league games. Dropping 40+ points against teams that don’t play defense means nothing. He better find a way to lead this team or they’ll be in the lottery instead of the playoffs.

  • underdog

How come Lewis didn’t get waived with the amnesty clause?

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

if u watch them play all of there plays were 1 on 1… u cant win that way as THIS washington wizard team… p.s. does anybody know what JaVale averages?

  • Jono

@Jay I agree it’s too early but we also can tell he’s def not going to be the ‘best point guard ever’ as he claims he will. He’ll do well following in Westbrooks footsteps at best. Just don’t like all the ads and ‘next big thing’ kinda hype, as if he’d ever be on Iverson’s level.

  • Lew alcindor

its flip’s fault, when you have nick young shooting 2-14 in the second quarter and he’s still shooting then youre doing something wrong with your team. They should just keep john and javale and amnesty lewis, start all over.

  • tomtom

John Wall isn’t overrated imo, also I don’t like these little clipped quotes in headlines, SLAM is doing that more and more recently. ‘it could get ugly all season’ is much more inflammatory than ‘if we don’t find a way to play together and win games it could get ug….’.

  • AD

john wall has to fix this … even tho hes a scorer.. he needs to try and be a pass first pg even tho that will take a while… That team has way too many scores and egos…… But it could be a good thing too if managed well but it starts with the players…. Nick young needs to be somewhere else

  • fruizm

I dont see you doing the stupid dougie anymore like in all those pr-am games!!!…You will never be D.Rose!!

  • T-Money

i feel bad for the kid… these knuckleheads are going to break the boy’s spirit. washington should just give away blotch and jordan crawford.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Wiz, get rid of Blatche or die a painful death.

  • http://www,slamonline.com S-Mills

I agree with JTaylor^ Blatche sucks the life out of the team. He’s talented but doesn’t fit with the group he’s in. They could probably get a half decent piece in a trade.

  • http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_history.html Allenp

    Flip Saunders.
Those two words say it all.

  • robb

He’s not overrated, but he’s in a bad situation right now, that coach sucks and it’s clear he needs more guidance. And someone please teach JaVale to play the game.

  • Heals

John don’t go to the darkside, I don’t care how poppin’ the party is don’t go with Dray, I don’t care if Javell knows he can beat that guys a$$ just walk away, I don’t care if Crawford guarantees he’s open 7ft behind the 3pt line he’s not. Do your thing, keep playing hard and the 66 ( and Flip, and Dray) will be over with before you know it. Keep that head up…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Tarzan Cooper

Heals with the encourgement. Wall is in a tough spot, but that’s Where number one picks go.

  • bull22

to all of you fools who had john wall as a better player then rose especially last season with all the excuse-making about wait until next season… GUESS WHAT??? you can eat schtick…… hahahahahhahahahahahhahhahhahhaha

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

^No one. I repeat no one said Wall was better than Rose. Sounds like something an absolute idiot would say. Didn’t you say that bull22?

  • robb

lol@bull22 that DRose poster over your bed is seriously affecting your brain.

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com yada

john wall just need to be around a different culture

  • Riggs

@bull22: wtf is wrong with you?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Bull22, The Seed, orange, AQ should all start their own website.

  • hushabomb

Its not so much that JWall is a scorer 1st and all that its the fact that everyone on the team thinks that they wanna be the man.

John can call all the offensive sets he wants, if Young or Crawford think they are open, they gonna shoot it and break the set. What’s worse is that they ain’t working on the defensive end as a team or individually. The best teams play defence and then worry about the offence.

Look at every playoff team. They have good defensive stats. And they hustle for the ball. The Wizards don’t.

Maybe the Wizards need to amnesty Young.

  • http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_history.html Allenp

    Wall isn’t a scorer first.
He just doesn’t have a jumper, has teammates who mostly stand around and shoot jumpers, and doesn’t yet understand pace and game situation.
He’s very talented, works very hard and has good instincts.
It’s just a bad, bad situation over there. Poor coach, poor teammates to a certain degree.
If they move Blatche, and dump Flip, they could make some improvements.

  • bike

“If we don’t find a way to play together and win games, it could get ugly this whole season”
One thing is certain. Wall didn’t just fall off the turnip wagon yesterday.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

damn john… with a good coach you’d be pure fire smh… FIRE FLIP SAUNDERS. also it really is a mystery why we don’t just ignore bulls22′s relentless trolling… I’m done acknowledging that cretin. Also if you honestly think john wall is a scorer first then you haven’t ever watched john wall. I’m serious.

  • Pais

Rashard “F’ing” Lewis said what? That’s rich.

  • Spades

Just wait a couple years for free agency and reject that qualifying offer buddy. I will always have faith in you. I’ve watched you since the Maui Invitational 3 years ago and I knew you were the man since then. I know you got what it takes to put the team on your back and get the W. Everything in DC is screwed up, don’t expect the team to be any different. Big Blue Nation stand up!

  • burnt_chicken

    1. Andray Blatche
    2. Flip Saunders
    3. Nick Young (apologies to AllenP)
    4. JeVale McGee
    5. Did I mention Blatche and Saunders?
    6. Adding up the collective basketball IQ of the above-mentioned still puts us firmly in the negative.
    7. It turns out Jordan Crawford is not better than Michael Jordan, and will not, in fact, go on to be the greatest player ever.
    8. The sage voice of veteran leadership is Rashard Lewis.

  • bignat

1.john wall is not a “franchise player” he is a fraud he was all hype at kentucky to be the 1st overall pick in the 2010 draft
2.all he is done is washington so far is his career has been some gay dougie dance and running arenas out of town
3.he still has no jump shot after he had reported been working on that all summer long he is a turnover machine and cant guard other point guards
4.he cant run a half court offense he only good when he fast breaks and cant break a defense down in the half court and dont have any of his teammates respect

  • kev

Aight imma set the record str8..
-John Wall has the talent and potential but he, like the rest of the team, doesnt play smart..
-Jordan Crawford is also talented, MJ… FOH.. i think he was saying he wants to be better that MJ, which is what you want just dont say it out your mouth.. I say give him more playing time with wall at point and young at sf.. havent seen this lineup all year.. Flip is to blame
-Rashard please Amnesty.. second highest paid player in the league and he doesnt do anything.. I dont think ive seen him score all year (im exaggerating but still)
-Blatch can play but he’s soft and slow..
-Young idk but hes better comming off the bench..
-Mcgee is the biggest problem on our team… Why are they running plays for him and giving him iso’s like he is Shaq.. Everytime he touches the ball i see a turnover.. I understand potential but its costing the team.. someone should tell him if he wants to score, get the offense rebound or set a good screen for a pick and roll.. dont take the jumper and no your not shaq either!.. idk if anyone else notices but the wizards play better when he goes out the game.

  • http://www.lovablebadass.com Manale

Flip Saunders seems to have no plays for this team, and nobody seems accountablefor their lazy play and poor decisions on the floor.

This team needs a new coach.

  • Zeb

Wizards need a veteran point guard to Show wall how its done. They should have claimed Davis or Billups off the Waivers.
