Kevin Love Demanding a Contract Extension By January 15th?

According to the NY Post, things could get dicey in Minny should the Timberwolves fail to offer Kevin Love a lucrative contract extension by the middle of the month: “According to the messenger, All-Star Kevin Love has not been offered an extension. Think the double-double emperor’s feelings are bruised? Think agent Jeff Schwartz might be putting the pressure on GM David Kahn and owner Glen Taylor to make a proposal pronto? You got that right; according to my source, if one isn’t submitted by Jan. 15, 10 days before the league deadline to enrich players in Love’s position (Russell Westbrook is another), then don’t bother. Supposedly, the restricted free agent — back for season four in superior shape and with amplified area-code accuracy — then will refuse to re-sign this summer or, if things are prolonged, the one after. Obviously, Kahn and Taylor are not going to let that happen. Obviously, they’re not going to bungle this million dollar baby. Obviously, they’re going to do the right thing. Come on, this is easy. After a mortifying four-year term, the Timberwolves have assembled a cluster of legitimate playoff pieces. Think management is going to mess this up?”

You want Kevin Love grabbing rebounds?
    Eff you, pay me.
You want him throwing outlet passes?
    Eff you, pay me.
You need a white superstar to appeal to your mostly white fan base?
    Eff you, pay me.
And then, when you can’t sign any free agents because you don’t have cap space, and you’ve traded away all your good draft picks, what do you do? You strike a match.

  • http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_history.html Allenp

And comparing Love to Garnett is blasphemy both in production and potential.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

    LOLOLOLOL^^^

  • Andrew Woods

Imagine k love’s outlet passes in miami!! Holy cow, chris bosh, miller, and jones for Love sounds about right.

  • Heals

It’ll be interesting to see how many of their guys Minny can afford in 2 years…

  • http://dsjfklfl.com Jukai

startown: C’mon, now. Kevin Love does ONE thing very well that counts as a defensive stat and does none of the others (steals, blocks) while playing no help defense and subpar isolation/post defense. He’s not a good defender, despite his stellar rebounding. He’s getting better, one day he could be average or hell, better than average. That day is not now.
Allenp: It’s a white thing, now?

  • http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_history.html Allenp

    It’s a rap reference homie.
    You wouldn’t understand.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

    Actually it’s a Goodfellas reference.
So I guess it is a white thing.

  • charliewinning

Long before In My Lifetime, it was a scene in Goodfellas.

  • charliewinning

    ^Beat me to it.

  • Spades

They should turn Williams and picks into a quality defensive center and then build around Beasley, Rubio and Love because they just can’t afford all of these young guys down the line and they have a logjam at wing.

  • http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_history.html Allenp

    Should have known.

  • neaorin

I don’t think it’s as simple as “is he a franchise player or not”. In the end, does it help or hinder your plan of (presumably) contending for a championship? I may pay a non-franchise player max money if I can add him to an already established core including one franchise player. Example: in Memphis, Pau Gasol’s huge salary had become a liability. On the Lakers, it’s just money well spent. And the Wolves are a lot closer to that Grizzlies team than the Lakers.

  • MikeC.

The smart move is what someone mentioned above. As Love is coming off his rookie contract, he’ll be restricted. The Wolves can just kick back, crack a frosty brew and wait for Love’s RFA summer. Worst case scenario, he signs a max offer sheet from another team and the Wolves match. Best case scenario, all other teams believe Wolves will match any offer and don’t waste their time and temporary cap space on a Love offer, and the Wolves can then offer Love a less than max deal. High fives all around!

@Allenp, Watched goodfellas yesterday homie, great movie.

  • Stroshow

    Kaaaaaahhhhhhhhnnnnnnnn!

  • http://dsjfklfl.com Jukai

Haha, my bad Allen. I’m far too white myself.

  • Heals

I dunno about all these proclomations of whiteness in a K-Love comment section, we’re setting ourselves up for something. What, I have no idea but this just has to be racist in someway in our currently PC America…

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

I’m not allowed to speak on what’s racist and what’s not on here…

  • Justin G.

Comparing Love to Garnett is hilarious. Garnett also led Minnesota to the playoffs and the WCF one time if I’m not mistaken. It’s not even close. MikeC has it right though. He’s not a franchise player. His numbers are nice obviously but when all you concentrate on defense is rebounding than a guy’s numbers are going to be inflated a little bit. It’s not like he’s a Dennis Rodman type rebounder that got his boards, played great one on one AND team defense etc.

  • charliewinning

I think their point the other day was that we can’t tell other folks what to get offended by, and I tend to agree. I didn’t find any comment about K-Love’s race racist but if someone else does, that’s his/her right.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

LOL @ Enigmatic (7:43) comment. You and me both, dunn

  • T-Money

Its a tough decision for Minny, the way the lux tax will be set up going forward, it will be very hard for teams to afford multiple max guys. What is the maximum outcome with Love as your best player? Then again, free agents will never sign to Minny so perhaos it’s best to overpay for Love.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Well does anyone see Minnesota getting a better player than Love in the next 5 years? Cuz if not, and taking into account that they have to use up at-least, 80, then 85, then 90, & then 95% of their cap space it’s only logical that they should use more of it on Love then anyone else right? I don’t see how, under the new Salary Cap, maxing out Kevin Love for the next 5 years is not obvious.

  • Allenp

Oh it is obviously going to happen. And it is not a dumb move. My point was that there is now way Love takes less to protect cap flexibility. Which Myles thought was possible.

  • http://dsjfklfl.com Jukai

Justin G: Rodman was the KING of not coming off his man to stay in position for the rebound, ESPECIALLY in San Antonio and Chicago. He could play decent team defense but he rarely ever did that except during crunch time. He padded his rebound stats just as bad as Love… the big difference was, Rodman played such pristine isolation defense, no one cared. They didn’t really need him to help out, just to lock down his man which he did beautifully.
But amazing help defender, he was not. He was good in Detroit. He was subpar afterwards.

  • ClydeSays

Minny can just wait & match offers. Sorry, kid. You’re under contract. It’s not like you’ve carried that team to even 30 wins over the past few years.

The kid can play, but is he a franchise player? I dunno. Minny has been a TURRUBLE shooting team over the past few years, so there are a ton of boards available. They don’t exactly tear it up on D either, so Love is able to roam for rebounds. He’s a solid shooter, but not lights out for a 6’10″ dude.

  • shutup

rodman also guarded the other teams best rebounder and made him disappear, he played great one on one big man defense. and @allenp since you touched on it, i think the hype around Rubio is severely impacted by his skin color, I think theyll give Love his extension to appease the snow covered landscape, and the league will continue to try to shove Rubio’s pasty @$$ front and center

  • http://dsjfklfl.com Jukai

Shutup: Totally agree, Rodman was a beast on isolation defense, whether it be the shooting guard or the center. But a great team defender he simply didn’t want to be.

  • TonyStarks

If 25.4 PPG, 15.2 RPG and an efficiency rating of +30 for a 4th year pro doesn’t equate to being a franchise player, I don’t know what does. Just to compare, Chris Bosh, who got max money from the Heat, averaged 22.6 PPG and 10.7 RPG in his 4th season in the L. And sure, the Wolves haven’t won much since he joined but you have seen their roster these past few years? In any case, won’t be long before he gets his deal.

  • shutup

i slightly disagree with you, when you can negate the other teams best bigman, like what he did to Robinson and Malone, he still helped his team defensively by sending the ball away from the other teams first option, and he was great at drawing offensive fouls ; couple that with stopping the other teams best rebounder and his nose for the ball it all lends itself to him helping his team defensively and thus making him a good team defender. Now if you define that term by blocking shots then no he wouldnt fit that title, but he like i said he clogged the lane and caused havoc, he could also defend the pick and roll extremely well. Also when he played zones werent allowed, the game was driven on man to man defense.

  • Mike from Spain

@ shutup -> sore because Rubio is good?

  • shutup

not at all, just dont agree with all the hype and I truly believe that the NBA pushes or tries to highlight its white players, so the avg middle class fan can identify with them. and rubio is ok, he can be great, but its to early to tell, hes had good games so far, nothing truly mind blowing, he can easily go the route of ed cota, erick barkley, telfair and countless other pgs that came into the league with a bunch of hype and ended up disappointing. and before you go off the i hate white people tangent, i am a gasol fan since he dunked on kg way back in his rookie year, i almost bought his jersey the unis were sick so i ended up buying the official shorts the black with that blue/green and weird red, from the nba store on 5th ave for like $125.

Is Monta Ellis worth the max? If you can say Ellis isn’t worth the max you can’t say that Love is worth the max either. Both very gifted, but one-dimensional players who seem to care more about their personal stats and failed to lead their team to the wins/playoffs (unlike, say KG.)

If you have to offer someone a max, give it to Rubio. He at least fits into the “sell merch” section thanks to the international factor and his entertaining style of play.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

By the time Rubio is eligible for a Max contract, Kevin Love’s max deal will be over.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Monta Ellis plays in a better market, Golden State >>> Minnesota. —- And Love does a lot more on a basketball court than Ellis. Thats kinda crazy to say what they provide is comparable. Love gives you 20 and 15 (plus the outlet passes and generally high basketball IQ), Ellis gives you 25 5 5 (selfishly) and creates bad mismatches on defense because of his size (and defensive inabilities). Love might not be a good defender either, but it’s more rare for him to be outplayed by his opponent, then it is for Ellis. Love is a much better/more valuable player.

  • shutup

Rubio will never be a max player, good? probably, but unless the whole country of spain votes for him I dont see him making an allstar game in his future either. Oh and if they dont pay Love, someone else will, if you guys havent noticed their is a severe lack of big men in the league nowadays, otherwise how would explain Chris Kaman making an allstar team?

  • Allenp

BBL hates Montage. I really like dude.

  • Allenp

Auto correct sucks. NBK hates Monta I like dude.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I don’t hate him. I just don’t think he’s anywhere close to a franchise player.

  • Mike from Spain

@ shutup -> I would say RR has always played against people more athletically gifted than him (when he was 14 and debuted in the Spanish league, and unless he’s a freak of nature, Rubio at 14 must surely have been weaker and slower than any decent 20something guard). So when people were saying that he’d be toast in the NBA because of the athletic players there, maybe people did not count with the fact that he’s been routinely playing against stronger and more experienced players since he was in middle school. For me it’s kind of bizarre that you talk of him as only hype and unproven, because he’s already played at the highest level. Perhaps he does not improve further and ends up being mediocre, but as things are, I’d say that he’s also got some chances to be better than he is. I am not sure about all star, given the hordes of PGs turning up in the drafts. I think that he’s very marketeable, perhaps sadly because he’s white as you pointed out, and also because of the international markets. Let’s see, I’d be very happy if he became an all-star some day, I don’t think it’s impossible but it ain’t easy.

Allenp with the skillful Goodfellas reference. Makes me all warm and fuzzy, that movie.
