Kobe Bryant on Raja Bell: ‘He Can’t Stop Me. He Knows That’

Longtime rivals Kobe Bryant and Raja Bell renewed acquaintances last night, and there was no love lost between the two after the Lakers escaped Utah with a close overtime win, behind Bryant’s 40 points. Per the Salt Lake Tribune: “Through four quarters and a five-minute overtime, Kobe Bryant and Raja Bell fought and clawed with each other. Bell incurred a technical foul in the first period. The two pushed and shoved each other at the end of regulation. The competition reached a fever pitch on more than one occasion. And then, following the Lakers 90-87 win over the Utah Jazz at EnergySolutions Arena on Wednesday night, the two went at it again in their respective locker rooms. First, Bell weighed in. ‘If he’s going to take 31 shots to get 40, then that’s pretty much all you can do. Anyone shooting 31 shots should score 40.’ Bryant had his say as well. ‘He can’t stop me. He knows that. But he’s good enough to make it interesting.’”

love this. once all the guys drafted in the 90s retire, this sort of banter will be gone, so enjoy it now.

Nobody in the league can stop Kobe.. Nobody!

  • Riggs

That’s why you were desperately pleading for him to join your team kobe? kay.

  • tom

as long as kobe gets his “deserved” calls you can´t do much more than raja.

  • tomtom

Also, is ‘anyone shooting 31 should score 40′ a smart comment?? So you are saying that he should shoot around 65% and that’s ok with you? I’m aware that Kobe didn’t but if Raja is happy with guys taking 31 shots and scoring 40 points every night then he is basically happy for everyone to shoot 65% (20.2ish :s shots per 31). And Bell gets away with fouling him almost every play. Jeez.

  • tomtom

Haha tom you have a great name aaand that’s about it. If you watch the game Raja got away with murder on so many possessions he had his hands all over Kobe and he leans on him every possession.

  • neaorin

tomtom, you have to take into account free throws as well. You can’t take 31 shots without getting to the line reasonably often. It’s just not possible.

  • kobesBESTfriend

he can clothesline him like he did in game 5 from 2006

  • Heals

    neither can MikeBrown…

  • Heals

Best sight for LAL fans this year (in my opinion) was the Pau, Bynum and Barnes embrace after the block. I haven’t seen that kindof unforced camraderie from the LAL in a bit…

  • underdog

Well, of course you’re going to the free-throw line as well. But you have to make those free throws too. More on the topic see yesterday’s MIA @ LAC game.

  • neaorin

right, but you won’t score 40 on field goals alone so you won’t shoot 65 percent or whatever.

  • robb

tomtom suffering from multiple personality disorder

  • http://slamonline.com Jesse

Kobe made 11 FT too, he shot 14/31, that’s not terrible but still far from 65%..

  • Kadavour

i said this in a previous post, Raja Bell beat Kobe the f*ck up! it was such a pleasure to see him take every opportunity to swipe at Kobe’s hurt wrist. @ lightsout: you’re so right, you won’t see Rudy Gay and Beasley swiping and Durant (DMV rivalry) the way Raja went at Kobe. We need some more gritty and Reggie Miller/MJ dirty players in the game.

  • robb

the best part of Raja going hard on Kobe? Kobe loves it.

  • jdote

if the lakers win the ship, kobe in my eyes will be the second best player i’ve ever seen play behind mj (born in 88 cut me some slack) talk about playin with a point to prove and backing it up. You don’t see this n e more. I’m awfully impressed with the way he’s been playing. That being said, I never thought he was done or losing it too much. Remember last year during the playoffs when he dunked on Okafor. I just didn’t expect him to be crazy aggressive.

  • this article is stupid

actually 40 points on 31 shots is still considered boarderline effecient its only good ifhe takes as many or more shots then points scored also th eonly reason kobe shot so bad is because he was fouled every play

  • http://nba.com/celtics lights out

you’re right, robb. i remember watching Kobe Doin’ Work, and he called playing against Bruce “kick Wally Szcerbiak in the face like a f—— ninja” Bowen fun. gotta love it.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Kobe wasn’t inefficient last night. Especially with the 11-11 from the line. thinking he can keep this torrent pace up is crazy though, he has scored 40+ two games in a row to edge out wins against Utah and Phoenix. That can’t be comforting.

  • The Spaniard

    Kobe’s stat line…

    2FG 14-31
    3FG 1-3
    FT 11-11

Bell got killed, period. There’s no shame in getting killed by Bryant however his suggestion that he got destoryed because Bryant took a lot of shots is nonsense.

  • Ldub

The only person that can stop kobe is kobe. He should make a commercial like melo did a short time ago with a bunch of kobes all over the court. In all seriousness, the dude is going crazy this season. I guess that #7 rating really got under his skin and he’s proving a point. I wonder what his stats would look like without the hurt wrist. Even tho he can still drop 40 at will, its effecting his game a lot (especially with handles, passing and turnovers). Average 35ppg anyone?

  • Patrick

    Who got next?

  • feez_22

The fact that kobe has to score 48 and 40 against 2 non playoff teams to win is discomforting in itself. Why? he doesn’t really need to do this. The team is talented enough to do differently. kobe shot more than bynum and gasol combined. Yes he put up an awesome performance but will this work against the real contenders? If kobe shoots like this against the thunder, bulls or heat… 3 top defensive teams & major contenders… the lakers pretty much have no chance. w/e though it was fun 2 watch.

  • LaKid

“He’s good enough to make it interesting.” Man I love the Mamba.

  • Drig

Knowing that Kobe won’t sustain this, let me just say that Raja, you better be thankful you weren’t out earlier. He got Kobe’s wrist so many effing times I wanted him to fail, fail and fail even more…..and then fail again lol. But I love these guys. And I’m sure they respect each other as well.

  • tomtom

I’m aware he shot free throws, but what i’m saying is about Bell’s comment. Kobe shot really well up until his last 5 or 6 which were really tough. You telling me he didn’t get at least 3 swallowed whistles last night?? My comment was about Bell’s strange comment, not Kobe’s game.

  • robb

@lights out yeah, the man is crazy, players trying to avoid Bowen and Kobe saying it was fun playing against him. I also remember during the post game interview against the Magic when Barnes did the ball fake on Kobe’s face and Kobe said: “It’s funny to me”.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

That was a classic quote by Kobe.

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

If Kobe shot 11 fts and assuming the were on shooting fouls, then he actually shot about 36 shots. Not sure how that changes his efficiency, just throwing it out there.

Lights out is right, soon there will be no banter like this because everyone in the NBA wants to be friends. They don’t hate each other. There aren’t any tough defenders like Artest, Raja and Bowen who just didn’t give a heck about your status in the league they just wanted to try and stop you.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Well Free Throws don’t count as attempts, whether they are shooting fouls or not. And considering he didn’t miss any of those free throws, each foul went against Utah’s team foul count, and their best defender fouled out I think it’s pretty clear why Free Throws have such a positive effect on efficiency.

  • shutup

Yeah but shots while fouled dont count as attempts, so if he went to the line 4-5 times while shooting he actually took 36 shots is what he was trying to say so 41-points on 36 attempts is really not that good

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

except there is more too it then just saying flatly he had 36 attempts. Free Throws only positively effect efficiency. This isn’t even an argument, I was just letting y’all know. Even missed free throw attempts in a game where each team shoots under 50% from the field is a net positive when you look at the effect it has on game situations, which I touched on above despite the fact that Kobe didn’t miss any of those…

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

lol Raja Bell was trying to mess with Kobe’s wrist even more last night and STILL got destroyed.

  • Cheema

Well Kobe you couldn`t do shit on him late in the game. 2-8 in overtime and and bricked the potential gamewinner.

I just hate how cocky this guy is.

  • http://lakersground Jay

Raja Bell’s stats for the season so far

    41 shots, 39 points. LOLOL

Shut up and sit down raja.

  • http://averysmith.org Avery Smith

lol @Patrick “Who got next?” I was watching the 4th and overtime, and I’m pretty sure Raja Bell had on Zoom Kobe’s. Oh, the irony. It’s gotta be the shoes, unless you’re not Kobe Bryant.

  • sketch

Hey Tom, if Kobe gets his “deserved” calls like LeBrick or D Wad or even anything close to his predecessor in Jordan then he would have already passed Shaquille O’neal on the all time scoring record and right on the heels of Chamberlain. Kobe doesn’t get nearly the calls as the other 3 that I’ve mentioned especially when the 2 from Miami are the ones that initiate most of the contact!

And Riggs, of course Kobe would want Raja Ding Dong to play on his team. He did say that “he’s good enough to make it interesting.” If Kobe can have an easier time, then of course he’d take that. But Kobe’s right… no one can stop him. There have been players who’ve given him trouble, but he’s always figured a way out to best them. That’s why he’s Kobe FCUKIN Bryant and his about to surpass Shaq on the all time scoring record of the NBA!

  • Pamela

OK, bottom line: Kobe’s doing all this with a severely injured wrist. Any other player in the NBA would be getting the surgery and the rehab. That being said…wonder what his stats would be if he was healthy. Say what you want, idiots, but you all know Kobe is the best player on the planet!

  • Nick

so i guess raja bell is saying that he can take 31 shots and make 40 points, dream on…

  • jose santiago

simply Kobe Bryant the best player in NBA history period hate the fact p.s.

  • http://twitter.com/robj0nes @rojb0nes

man thye just don’t make players like they used to back then. When 90s players r gone we are f##ked. no more trust talking and friendly competition. no more Ron art…I mean Metta what ever Peace no more. thats crazy. welll we will have LeBron quitting in the finals on us. lmfao

  • The AntiCrust

Raja (“No Class” Bell should have been tossed from the league for at least half a season when he threw Kobe to the floor in the PHX/LA series…he grabbed him by the neck, had him stopped then threw him to the court, he could have broken his neck or back…but since Kobe gets up, no major fine. Unlike all the crying when a Laker tapped Rudy Fernandez when he was in Portland. BTW, does Raja actually play basketball, or does he just collect a paycheck for being tall enough?
