Kobe Bryant Would Shoot Even More if Chris Paul Was His Teammate

Kobe Bryant’s shooting has been the main topic of discussion for the Lakers this season — just like, um, every season — and in a hilarious interview with ESPN, he boasts that he’d take even more shots if he had a Hall of Fame distributor like Chris Paul on his squad: “Driving the lane but stuck with no room to shoot, he tossed the ball off the bottom of the backboard, caught it and laid it in. Who says Kobe doesn’t pass the ball? ‘I should get an assist for that,’ Bryant said. ‘It’s an intentional pass to oneself, so it’s an assist. That way people can’t say all I do is shoot.’ [...] ‘Look, I’ve played 15 years. I’ve won world championships. I’ve done all these things. And people still want to talk about this stupid-a** [stuff]? I’m a scorer first … I’ll try to make the good play, the good pass, kick it out when my teammates are open, but I’m a scorer first. I may shoot 27 times. I may shoot 20 times. Nobody complains when I shoot 10 times. You don’t hear ME complaining when I shoot 10 times. It just depends on the game, you know?’ Yes, but Kobe, with your right wrist swollen like a miniature Macy’s float, wouldn’t this be a good time to pass on a few. ‘I’ve shortened up my follow through,’ he says. Yes, but Kobe, according to ESPN research, you have the highest ‘usage rate’ — that’s the number of possessions a player uses per 40 minutes — in the NBA. In fact, your usage rate (38.9) would be the highest in the 3-point era of NBA. ‘Yeah,’ he says. ‘And I also have five rings.’ Yes, but Kobe, stats show that the Lakers are 29-4 when rising star center Andrew Bynum scores 20 points. Shouldn’t it be a high priority for you to. ‘That’s great. How many of those shots come from me kicking it to him for good looks when I’m being doubled?’ [...] Besides his coming divorce, which he doesn’t talk about, nothing is going to change Kobe Bryant. Whether Phil Jackson is his coach or new Lakers coach Mike Brown. (‘Right now, Kobe Bryant allows me to coach him,’ Brown said the other day, and not kiddingly.) Whether Chris Paul is his teammate or Paul is playing across the hall for the Clippers. ‘Not true,’ says Kobe. ‘Chris would’ve created shots for me. I wouldn’t be shooting 29 times a game. I’d be shooting 40. Man, what would people be saying THEN?’”

wow, couldn’t be more clear: IDGAF.

  • Heals

The only thing Kobe does more than shoot is talk about himself (usually about him shooting ironically)…

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    What a “great” teammate.

  • tomtom

Fuel for the kobehate fire…yawn. 16 years and people still can’t help themselves smh, ring 6 coming up ppl stay tuned!

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Dude sounds just like his fans. Oh..kobe, why didn’t you box out on that play? I have 5 rings. Oh..kobe, why weren’t you in practice today? I have 5 rings. Oh..kobe, what happened to the lasagna I left in the fridge? I have 5 rings.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I am done winning championships. I am not done shooting contested jumpers.

  • robb

lol this is getting funnier and funnier, although I’m sure I won’t find it funny when the Lakers lose in the playoffs because of Kobe’s stubbornness to shoot the ball no matter what. Yes he’s a scorer, but he also is a high I.Q. basketball player who plays with other 4 individuals, it would be nice if his adjustments contemplated more than where and how does he shoot the ball while he’s injured. “It’s all about being able to adapt” Sounds familiar Kobe? you’re 6th depends on it.

  • Jer dawg

I hope they win this year unexpectedly so he can be even more hilariously vile to the media.

  • kobe4ever8

I need to watch this interview. Being a big kobe fan ever since, I must admit that it’s hard to watch him play sometimes. not playing defense, complaining too much, and of course shooting too much.

  • kobe4ever8

I hope they win championship, but if this keeps up, I dont see them getting past the other teams in the west. I think the team should work on simple basketball like kobe swinging the ball and possibly getting the ball back in a better position to school. Rather than kobe demanding the ball, dribble, back down defender, fake, fake, pivot, fake, fake, pivot, fade away.. complain. SMH

  • Michelle

If he would take 10-15 shots a game and the Lakers would lose people would complain that Kobe doesnt step up and win games for them. But when he shoots a lot they complain too.

  • AD

it makes sense tho cp3 would set him up for open shots … added on to the number of contested shots he takes

  • MUBWAR

well besides my wife and daughter, I’m my own personal fan too so I cant hate on what he said. hope ur divorce is easy on you Kobe cause I don’t know what I will do without my family.

  • Riggs

@tomtom: youre gonna stay tuned for years.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Double J

This article is so anti-Kobe it stings, SLAM get your writers straight, this is supposed to be reporting not bashing.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

this is from ESPN. Slam didn’t really do anything but post it on their website. But whatever makes the world look like it’s against Kobe to Kobe fans, I guess.

  • Name

Dude has too much pride. Unfortunately he’s also too stupid and short-sighted to see his flaws.

  • Everynowhere

lol @jtaylor21. hey man i would be saying the same thing if i knew i wasn’t gonna get another one. I heard kobe gets wrist injections before games to numb the pain. He’s a warrior no doubt, but i don’t see how shooting 25+ shots a game can relieve the pain.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Tarzan Cooper

I like kobe4ever8 ‘s breakdown. However, he forgot where kobe yells and pretends to get fouled on every shot.

  • OTB

Look, this happens every year. He’s shooting too much this year, but he will tone it down; he usually does. Bryant is stubborn, but he also will do what it takes for his team to win. I’m sure as the season goes on, he will adjust more to a “team” concept – Kobe often takes the duration of the season to settle in. Also keep in mind that this is a new coach, and perhaps he feels he has to “prove” he is the alpha dog on a team where Brown wants the ball working through his bigs (with Bynum being better than Gasol now) first. It’ll be fine.

Haha, I love this cat. My favorite player ever. Just love the confidence and the fire. Keep it going Kob’s.

  • http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_history.html Allenp

Has anybody else noticed how often Kobe uses profanity in interviews these days?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

He is basically a pirate when he’s single.

  • OTB

@AllenP – Yeah, seriously. I actually noticed it when I was reading Chris Ballard’s “Art of a Beautiful Game” – the man will swear for no reason. He swears a lot more often now, and didn’t really do it that much till his MVP season actually. It’s kind of odd, but I guess its his way of standing out.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Why would we ever give a f*ck about a dude cussing…. It’s just part of that fire that he has. He’s kinda a angry dude. Not Garnett angry, but similar. Is cussing even a negative thing?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    who f*ckin knows

  • http://Www.dimemag.com Royal

I hate that Kobe swears , F*ck him

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

And people still have the nerve to compare this fool to Mj, man get the hell out of here.

  • kobesBESTfriend

so Lebron gets heat for not shooting enough and kobe gets killed for shooting to much…just goes to show u haters gona hate

  • kobesBESTfriend

and btw kobe would keep shooting no matter his teammate…ask shaq

  • bike

Brown screwed up right off the bat telling everyone that he wanted his offense to go through the big guys. If he had announced to the world he wanted Kobe to be the offensive centerpiece, Kobe would be averaging about 4 shots a game.
Kobe is and always has been the biggest prima donna in the league.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

newsflash, Kobe’s “best friend” knows things nobody else has ever figured out. Wait a second….. you aren’t Kobe’s best friend are you?

  • charliewinning

He needs to stop cursing so f*ckin much. And stop shooting like a godd*mn fool.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

bike, Biggest prima donna? Probably. 4 shots a game? No way in freezing hell.

  • Mariano

I hate how he acts street when he was raised with the finer things in life… If he wasn’t an NBA player this kind of dude would get killed in the hood

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I’m not a huge fan of random profanity. And most players tend to avoid it during interviews. Kobe just sprinkles it in all the time and it almost seems calculated.
    But that’s my thing.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

g*dd*mn it kobe stop cursing so f*ckin much!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

profanity is not acting street. the way Kobe uses profanity (imo) is just habitual. I cuss a ton, not because I’m doing it on purpose, but because it’s a sh*tty habit I got into when I was a kid.

  • Ldub20

do people think that becuz bynum and gasol can score that kobe should pass more? so Jordan shoulda passed more? Wade shoulda passed more? Dirk shoulda passed more? Duncan shoulda passed more? Get outta here with that. there is a reason kobe is gaining on the all time leaders in scoring and he wont if he doesnt shoot. lakers are doing alright this season…started off rocky, but they are getting better. Some shots are forced yes, but there are plenty that are good shots. His teammates will still get theres. Bynum will get his, Gasol will get his. Lakers will be fine with Kobe shooting 20+ shots a game. Who is gonna stop him? Coach? Team? other players? NEGATIVE!!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Phil Jackson always pushed MJ to pass more. Same with Kobe.

  • charliewinning

It does seem a bit ‘put on’ when Kobe curses. I think he does it to not seem soft, but not necessarily to appear street. It’s like a defense mechansim for when people try to somehow uses his background against him, as ignorant as that sounds.

  • Ldub20

    ^theirs*

  • charliewinning

The fact that your teammates can score means you shouldn’t be taking a ton of bad, forced shots. The Lakers’ other scorers are closer to the basket than Kobe. He definitely should be passing more. How is that even a debate?

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

    killer interview man

  • Showmeyourwits

Meanwhile Kobe averages 6 dimes, good for 18th overall and 3rd among SGs. This is a ridiculous storyline, and the Lakers are in better shape than many thought. If they picked up Aaron Brooks or another speedy PG somehow, they’re back in championship contention.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

That’s because he’s on pace to set the highest usage percentage ever in the 3pt era.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Which is absurd he can’t physically keep That pace up. He is already taking numbing shots in his wrist before each game an he isn’t getting any rest.

  • golakeshow

When you are the greatest to ever touch a basketball in the NBA, you can take as many shots as you want. The man got 37 points Tuesday night. Let him shoot, he’s the best in the world right now.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Double J

Ah ok just went to ESPN, my bad SLAM… but dang what a way to paint a player that’s already perceived in a negative light

  • charliewinning

The greatest to ever touch a basketball? Lmao. And no, he’s not the greatest on Earth either. Hilarious suggestion.
