Lamar Odom Struggling to Adjust to Life in Dallas

Virtually every interview that Lamar Odom has done about his trade from the Lakers to the Mavericks has been incredibly depressing, and the latest one is no different. He talked to SI last night about trying to cope with his new reality in Dallas: “Has it been tough? ‘When you have relationships with people and there are hard times, you know how to deal with one another,’ Odom said. “When you don’t, it’s obvious.’ From a basketball perspective, Odom has yet to find his niche in Dallas. His struggles have made him a frequent target of [Rick] Carlisle, who has harped on Odom’s need to understand the coverages, be more alert, communicate and get in better shape; Odom’s 19.9 minutes per game are the lowest of his career. It’s more than just basketball, however. Team sources say Odom has often appeared stressed by what they believe is the mental burden of an overwhelming offseason. Indeed, Odom told ESPN he considered taking a hiatus from the game. Being out of Los Angeles, away from his longtime teammates and friends, many of whom he has been close with for the last seven years, has not helped. And the sting of being considered expendable by LA — Odom was part of the aborted trade that would have brought Chris Paul to the Lakers — has not worn off. Asked if he had watched any Lakers games, Odom is succinct. ‘I can’t allow myself to,’ Odom said. […] Can Odom find a way to succeed in the Mavericks’ system? ‘It’s hard for me to say,’ Odom said. ‘I thought my game was equipped to play anywhere and everywhere. I’m not prepared, I guess, to play. I don’t know if there is anything more to say.’”

“When you have relationships with people and there are hard times, you know how to deal with one another” <— translation: khloe ain't feeling dallas.

Lamar has been through some tough situations in his life. I’m surprised to see him struggle with the move from LA to Dallas. It can’t be that hard to play on a team whose core won a title last season.

If he could just be selfish and be an asshole then he would adjust fine. His wife should cure his ailing mind. Dude gets paid to play ball. I like Lamar and I hope he gets his head out of his ass and play better. But not against the Lakers.
Conspiracy theory; could HE be a sabatoger of the Dallas Mavericks? This is his plan to break down the team that embarrassed the Lakers?

Zogs…. that is a rather childish and homo statement. You should take your own advice, “grow the f u c k up”.

It was reported that Odom came back from the lockout out of shape. Maybe it’s due to the things he went through during the offseason. I wonder if the Lakers thought Odom wasn’t mentally and physically in a position to help the team and made the decision to trade him. Odom is still pouting about getting traded. He’s taking the trade personal. It’s business man, get over it already!

Also, I expect Dallas to make the post season & Odom should be in a groove by then.

I think the lost of his cousin and the accident is causing him to be depress or mentally unstable. From the game last night he did mention he was thinking of taking a year off to recover.

  • robb

He wanted the trade, he got it, to the champs no less. Stop Crying.

His cousin was murdered and he was the passenger in a car ride that killed a kid. So I’m torn as to claim him mentally weak or if the offseason really was too much…Meh, mentally weak, we all know it.

This guy is a joke. He couldn’t swallow his pride and remain in LA after the trade didn’t go through. Now all he does is talk about being back in LA and how miserable he is. They should send him to the D-League, then he’d have something to complain about.

It’s his relationship with those Kardashian tramps. Those women are poison.

I have all the respect for Odom because of all the adversity he has behind him, but I bet now he’s sorry he acted so fast after those CP3 trading news.

He has had to deal with some crazy life situations, now basketball ones, and he’s getting older. Pile it on.

When I had hard times in my life then the court and was something where I could forget about everything.
I think Lamar has problems with his wife and his plans for life.
But hey he gets millions to play basketball so it’s something I can’t relate to. He can take care of his wife and life in LA when the season is over.

  • tom

they should just trade him back! :)

  • bull22

@zog, actually man that comment was hilarious considering that all lamar odom is doing is whining about not being in LA after saying he takes pride in a team defending their championship and wants to help dallas defend theirs.
he needs to shutup and learn the schemes and play harder so the mavs can make it to the top seed as i predicted.

He just needs to take a page out of Stephon Marbury’s book… And get caught up in life. He’ll be fine.

i used to hate lamar bc i felt like he wasn’t working up to his potential.. but now, knowing all that he’s been through i respect him. This offseason has been rough for him. let the the man live.

  • BMamba12

As much as I still want Lamar on the Lakers and wish he hadn’t been traded, I have no sympathy for his basketball troubles. He whined and cried and found himself on the defending champions. This is a business. Man up and do your job.

And i thought Pau was the soft one.
Oh well, at least the team’s winning, no thanks to him.
If he can get in a groove, that would make them truly dangerous.

  • golakeshow

Who the hell cares about this meathead. The lakers are better off without this asshole.

  • c.a.

If his wife knew anything about basketball she would realise that this is a better situation for her husband.
But she doesn’t. The reason this is ‘hard’ for her is not the empathy of seeing Lamar struggle to play his beloved profession. It is because she is away from the media oxygen of L.A, and is gasping for breath. Shallow.
