Mike Brown: LeBron James ‘Youthful’, Kobe Bryant ‘Serious-Minded’

Mike Brown is the only coach in NBA history to have had both LeBron and Kobe on his roster, so his opinion on the two megastars is always going to hold weight. Last night, Brown talked about what he perceives to be the main difference between Bryant and James. Per ESPN: “They’re both obviously guys that know how to perform at a high level,’ Brown said. ‘Their games are different. On both ends of the floor they’re very different, but especially offensively. LeBron is a guy that’s still learning and still growing and the reality of it is, being down there with Dwyane Wade is helping him and every year, every game he’s getting better.’ […] Brown said James and Bryant differ most when it comes to demeanor. ‘They’re different,’ Brown said. ‘Different personalities. LeBron, he’s a guy that likes to laugh and joke and he knows, obviously, when there’s a time to be serious but he’s youthful. I guess that’s probably the word. Whereas Kobe is not as much. Kobe is more serious-minded and so-on and so-forth. But Kobe knows how to have fun in his own way, too.’ A reporter asked if Bryant’s and James’ differences were based on their disparate ages and the fact that they came into the league during different eras — for example, it was a rarity when players went right from high school to the NBA when Bryant was drafted in 1996, but had become commonplace by the time James was selected in 2003. ‘I don’t know if the era has anything to do with it,’ Brown said. ‘I think it’s just personalities more than anything else.’”

You obviously didn’t watch last nights game. 2 misses and 2 turnovers. None were one after the other.

I think something that has developed in Lebron the past 3 years is a huge fear of failure. Kobe is something like 35 percent in the clutch in his career, but he doesn’t let that stop him the next time. Lebron intially showed some promise in the clutch, like that game where he had 28 points in the 4th and overtime against detroit a few years ago (i may be mangling the details), but he felt that he couldn’t do it alone in Clevland, and after things didn’t work out as scripted last year, it seems that when things get tight, he shies away from it all. When he’s on fire, he’s unasailable, but he is developing into the opposite of a crunch time player.

“LEBRON missing clutch shot after clutch shot, turnover after turnover yesterday in the clutch, was almost like an unreal joke. I never realised how pathitic he is in the 4th…” – first of all, a shot is not a free throw. Also, this is not the norm. You never realized how pathetic he is in the 4th because usually he isn’t pathetic.

  • Jer dawg

I hate these stat geeks like Henry Abbott and Chris Sheridan or whomever else use their numbers to calculate who is more clutch percentage wise. Guys who occasionally hit game winners and pass most of the time shows something; they think It’s a better play, but they may ultimately lose the game and the stats don’t demonstrate anything.
Kobe will shoot and shoot and shoot. Of course his percentage is lower. He’s got more courage than other players when it comes to owning the game. Stat geeks go line up against Kobe and he’ll show you a statistic.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Kobe is older, Bron is younger.

  • MLK4Life

Kobe was pretty serious when he was 27 too so the age thing isn’t a factor here.

  • KenboJay

Kobe is better than LBJ dont wanna hear he’s young he has been in the league for 9yrs…D wades young with a serious demanor

  • MLK4Life

This is just about personality. LeBron is a fun loving guy. He played angry last year and he’s said multiple times that that’s not who he truly is. That’s who Kobe is. Not a knock on LeBron. It is what it is. No story here.

  • LA Huey

“Mike Brown: LeBron James ‘Youthful’, Kobe Bryant ‘Serious-Minded’” I can’t really argue with that. It’s weird how LeBron has seemed to regress in crunch time since coming to Miami though. I think it was nbk that pointed it out the other day but LeBron used to lead the league in 4th qtr pts.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    that was JTaylor homie

  • http://ZOGS.COM ZOGS

OMG NBK ARE YOUR PARENTS COUSINS????!!
Lebron James has NEVER been clutch, HE AVERAGED LIKE 3PPG IN THE 4TH QUATER IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!
The fact that you said Lebron is clutch, make you “retarded”

  • ryan

    and mike brown “paranoid

  • T-Money

jer dawg: the reason we care about stats is precisely because reps are unreliable. if you have a clutch rep, we’ll forget the misses and remember the makes. if you have an unclutch rep, we’ll forget the makes and remember the misses. kobe had one of his worst game in literally the biggest game of his career (gm 7 in the finals vs boston), was he unclutch in the moment of truth? nah, he was just off that day. when was the last time chauncey “mr big shot” has hit a big shot? that’s why we need empirical evidence to draw legit conclusions.

  • T-Money

so serious demeanor = winning now? how did magic do it?

  • http://ZOGS.COM ZOGS

Oh and BTW if a FT isnt a shot WTF IS IT???!!!
    (never said FG)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

ZOGS: you mean in the Finals. He was lights out in the clutch against the Celtics and the Bulls. Statistically Lebron has been great during the clutch for years – his overall production rises and his FG% is higher than Kobe’s – but what I suspect those statistics don’t reveal is the streakiness of Lebron’s clutch performances. He’ll be great one game, then disappoint in the next.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

You must have been Kobe’s butler or pool boy to know that he’s was serious at the age of 27. Smh, fanboyism at it’s worst.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

The same thing can be said about the bean.

  • MLK4Life

@JTaylor Umm….No, don’t need to be a butler or pool boy. I just watched him play and saw interviews that he did. Same personality. I’ve watched him since he came into the league just like LeBron. They’re two different guys. It’s not about being a fanboy. It’s paying attention to how they act. Simple. I know being factual and objective sometimes gets lost on here with some people, but it may be good to at least try.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Aside from the fact that Brown said Lebron could be serious when he had to be, why is Kobe’s supposedly constant seriousness considered to be a virtue? Is it because he just scored a ton of points against terrible defences? Kobe has also been arrogant, aloof and antagonistic towards teammates. Lebron, by all accounts, is a great teammate and has been voted as the guy most NBA players most want to play with. Some of that probably relates to his ability to crack jokes and help guys relax.

  • All Day

@JTaylor21: Kobe has always been serious, since coming into the league. Phil Jackson use to talk about that all the time. Phil called Kobe aloof and said that Kobe never hungout with any of his teammates.

  • MLK4Life

    @All Day
    Truth.

  • All Day

Mike Brown Translater: Kobe is a killer and LeBron is not.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Refusing to interact and hangout with your teammates doesn’t mean you’re serious person, it means you’re a bad teammate.

  • LA Huey

    My bad nbk

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Zogs your an ignorant moron. And that’s pretty much all the response you deserve.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Haha I’m ok with you mistaking facts as coming from me. Just wanted to give credit where it’s due.

  • Riggs

whats this influx of moronic commentators?

  • robb

Every basketball fan knows this. You don’t need Mike Brown’s amazing insight to realize Lebron is youthful and Kobe serious minded.

  • OTB

Lebron has always seemed like he’d be a great teammate to play with. Its kind of like working in an office with a manager who likes to kick it and have a good time, versus a manager who is ultra serious and is all about the end results, with some personality thrown in there. To each their own. Kobe’s approach works because his teammates know how serious he is about winning and follow his example, and Lebron’s works because his teams tend to have great chemistry.

Derek Fisher is the actual leader in the locker room, however.

  • The IQ

@ Dagger- You MIGHT be 100% true that “most NBA players” want to play with LeBron. Most of these guys now are different, winning is secondary and having a great time in life is primary. I’m in no way blaming these guys, who could blame a young and rich man for wanting to live it up. However, Kobe Bean Bryant just wants to win the NBA Championship. He has 5, maybe helping “guys relax” isn’t the way to do it.

  • The IQ

OTB- LeBron has to win one before you can even make the comparison of his approach working. LeBron might be Peyton Manning, we all know that Peyton got lucky in his only Super Bowl win to face Rex Grossman. They are great with stats and wonderful regular season and some playoff games. The GIANT stage is another thing though.

  • bike

LeBron doesn’t quite have that killer instinct personality that guys like Jordan and Kobe had/have. It could wind up being the only thing that prevents him from becoming the G.O.A.T.

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

Yea i did hear Phil say that too. In his early years when players would go out on tha town n everything, Kobe would be @ tha hotel studying tha playbook or working on his game

  • OTB

The best way to describe Bryant would be as a basketball nerd. The dude literally studies basketball, there’s no shame in that. The only other players I get similar vibes from are Durant and Rose. Rose, specifically, seems like he just lives and breathes basketball, with everything else coming in second. Both approaches (Lebron/Shaq vs. Kobe/Rose) have their own pros and cons.

  • http://www.crappyrappers.com Simon Caine

    ^^Basically, lol.

  • Jeremy

@nbk @Zogs I think maybe there is a compromise here. I am not a stats guy, but I look at things like a missed FT at the end of a game not very clutch. I also realize we are 18 games into the season, and a game with a Clippers has no impact on the Heat’s plan even if it is a loss. A gamewinner Kobe hits against the Raptors midseason has the same effect. Give me game 7, NBA Finals and who would most people like to have? Strangely enough it is Kobe. Dwayne Wade, Durant, Carmelo, Dirk, Manu, Kobe and LBJ would be the clutch players that I would choose from. Clutch is a title bestowed on many but deserved by few, and earned by five or six players in the history of the NBA. OH and yeah Kobe is way more serious than LBJ…. cool story bro.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I never called LeBron clutch. He is quite the opposite recently. But what Zogs said, “LEBRON missing clutch shot after clutch shot, turnover after turnover yesterday in the clutch, was almost like an unreal joke.” is simply not true. His inconsistency at the foul line was like a bad joke, but it wasn’t miss after miss. And at no point was it turnover after turnover. Obviously he said it because it supported his initial “Kobe is a champion” – you know, because putting up 40 in an overtime win against Utah is a world championship.

  • LA Huey

I’m gonna put myself out there – Laker/Kobe fans are gonna be hard to find here next Friday after they lose to LeBron again.

  • 130623

Personally I think too much is being put on “the last shot” thing anyhow, I don’t think lebron is scared to take it, he has before I think he’s just a little less selfish than kobe and doesn’t have that always having to be the man and this is my team attitude, bron is a team player (I am a big Kobe fan by the way, I’m not hatin!) I bet more guys in the L would wanna play with bron over Kobe because of this! Lebron will win a chip or 5,6,7 at some point, book it!

  • Coffeebean14

Mike Brown is better at political-correctness than coaching..

  • Dyce

I think it has more to do with Lebron’s Demeanor in the clutch. When you see Kobe, Melo, or many other players miss in the clutch. They usually clap their hands and move right along. You can almost see every mistake weighing in on Lebron in the 4th, if he shook it off he’d be fine and not care and just shoot the next one.

  • Jake

9 years in, two MVP’s, 2 finals appearances, 2 finals defeats. One of them was understandable. Timmy D and The Admiral weren’t to be stopped that year, they were on a mission from the get go. The other one( last year) was not excusable at all. They lost because of 23′s incompetence in the second half of games. It comes down to one thing. When is he going to realize that he is bigger, stronger, faster and all around more athletic than any other player at his position? He could barrel his way into the lane at any given time and score, but he decides to shoot 3′s. Meanwhile, undersized guys like Allen Iverson made a living by driving into the lane and scoring over players much much bigger than them. I don’t want to hear anything about AI shooting 40 times a game either, he was a baller plain and simple. In reality, what makes LeBron any different at this point than say….Charles Barkley? In my opinion, you shouldn’t even be in the discussion for best player in the game if you’ve made it to the promised land twice and choked like PJ Carlesimo both times. I’ll give him credit for the accolades he’s gotten( they are well deserved) but don’t try to put him in the same class as Kobe, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson. There’s nothing wrong with being a very good player who can’t win it all. But he’ll never be the best UNTIL he wins. I’m not saying he’ll never be the best, that’s still very possible…but call it like it is RIGHT NOW.

  • Heals

How weird cause it’s not like LBJ is younger than Kob or anything, hun. I know Mikey is just getting bombarded with these types of Q’s so with that in mind way he had to say something without saying anything. Here’s to hoping they stop asking you dumb Q’s(I won’t hold my breathe)…

  • LA Huey

Jake, you have some points I can agree with but your list is weird because that “class” is simply group of All-Stars who won championships if you’re tossing in the likes of Shuttlesworth, Garnett, and Paul Pierce. Before they hooked up in Boston, they had 1 MVP and 3 combined Conference Finals appearances between them after a combined 30+ seasons. Even before last season, LeBron had a 2 MVPs, a trip to the Finals and an appearance in the Conference Finals in just 7 years.

Zogs, your a freak bro. How’s your superstar DeMar DeRozen doing leading the Raps buddy? He’s taken a dip in every category except turn overs. He’s increased those for ya. Get outta here. @Jake… umm when did LeBron go up against David Robinson’s Spurs in the Finals?
