NBA Teams Celebrate 45th Anniversary of ABA’s Founding

Hardwood Classics Month is almost here!

Per a release from the NBA:

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and adidas  will  celebrate  the  45th  anniversary  of the American Basketball Association’s  (ABA)  founding  with  a series of games during NBA Hardwood Classics Month. The ABA existed for 10 seasons from 1967 to 1976, when four of its  teams—Denver  Nuggets,  Indiana  Pacers, New York Nets and San Antonio Spurs—joined  the  NBA. This season is their 35th Anniversary since joining the league. As part of the celebration, which tips off Feb.1, nine teams—the Charlotte Bobcats, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers,  Memphis  Grizzlies, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, New  Jersey  Nets and San Antonio Spurs—will recognize the anniversary by wearing commemorative uniforms and hosting special in-arena events.

The uniforms, made  in  conjunction  with  adidas,  the league’s official outfitter,  will  feature designs  from  the  team’s  storied  past  or as originally  worn  by the former ABA franchises in their geographic region—Charlotte  Bobcats  (Carolina  Cougars),  Los Angeles Clippers (Los Angeles Stars),  Memphis  Grizzlies  (Memphis Tams), Miami Heat (Miami Floridians), Minnesota  Timberwolves (Minncristesota Muskies), New Jersey Nets (New York Nets) and San Antonio Spurs (Texas Chaparrals).

NBA Hardwood Classics Month will run through the month of February and will feature 38 games with 6 televised nationally on ABC, ESPN, TNT and NBA TV. All jerseys will be available on NBAStore.com on Feb.2.

Holy cow those ABA jerseys look crazy. I mean it in a good way. The Chappells, Chapparells, or whatever San Antonio is wearing is vastly different that their old “San Antonio” across the front of their jersey. They are very interesting though.

I like these a lot. I just hate when home teams where dark-colored throwbacks/classics and the visiting team wears home jerseys, like in Knicks-Cavs last night. I’m just a traditionalist like that.

    What is a Memphis Tam?

I will get a nuggets one for my love for them, but I wouldn’t mind getting a hold of a Charlotte and San Antonio one either.

  • Samwise

The Name TAM comes from the 3 states near Memphis. Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. (found on Wikipedia)

Charlie Finley, who owned the Oakland A’s, owned the Memphis Tams. He was obsessed with the green and gold colors, and chose to bring that to the ridiculously named Tams. It’s been a while, but I read a good deal about them and a lot of other ABA history/squads in the book Loose Balls (by Terry Pluto, not the Jayson Williams autobiography). I’m sure some of you have heard of it but I’d highly suggest checking it out if no.

Loose Balls is the Definitive story of the ABA. Shame Atlanta ( St Louis Hawks) can’t give some love to the Spirits of St Louis uniform. JSmoove = level headed Marvin Barnes
