Odom Came ‘Real Close’ to Walking Away from Basketball

After experiencing two tragic events in July, Lamar Odom told ESPN.com that he nearly asked the Lakers for a season away from basketball, but his wife Khloe Kardashian talked him out of it: “Left reeling by the July murder of his 24-year-old cousin and a fatal car accident days later that killed a teen pedestrian after the car he was riding in as a passenger collided with a motorcycle, Odom told ESPN.com that he had to be convinced by wife Khloe Kardashian to scrap his plans for a hiatus. ‘Real close,’ Odom said when asked Saturday how close he came to asking the Lakers for a season-long sabbatical. ‘My wife talked me out of it. Cause I was asking myself: Was I mentally prepared to play? If I didn’t play well, was I mentally prepared to help the team? I had thought, Maybe I need a year. Because of the lockout, I thought, Maybe somebody’s sending me a sign that I needed this time off. (But) when I told some of my friends and my family that I was thinking about steppin’ back for a minute, I think the reaction from the closest people to me kind of gave me the energy to get back at it.’”

    Lamar you are a joke

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

He always had a flair for the dramatic.

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

HE’S even questioining his own desire.

  • http://slamonline.com Jones

Why keep playing? He’s got rings, money, rich wife and his own tv show. Explains why he’s been so terrible this season though.

  • neaorin

I’m sure at least some in his entourage weren’t thrilled about their meal ticket taking some time off.

  • ME

Maybe he should have taken that time off last season. Just saying. LMAO..LOL my friend said “Lakers dont want any more reality show so they get rid of Lamar”….lol

  • hulahula

after mo williams, then this guy smh

  • http://slamonline Andre

i understand why he is playing how he’s playing and why he left the Lakers.

  • Landry_legend

Suck it up and make ur 9 million…. Don’t players use basketball to get away from their problems and to get a release from everything

  • Heals

Somewhere in the future LO is gonna find a way to smile 2 days in a row. It’s just gotta happen, right?

  • Bill Sunday

Lamar this is your doctor, you have a bad case of being a b!tch. I am prescribing a bottle of man the fu¢k up.

This is nothing like HoMo Williams saying he wanted to quit basketball when Lebron ditched Cleveland. Aside from his basketball career and making millions, the guy’s had a very tragic life. Too many deaths in his family.

  • T-Money

zabbah: if he can afford it, he can do whatever he wants. but people show up to do their jobs after tragic events all the time. in sports an in the corporate world.

As the season roles on and Lamar’s “conditioning” looks horrendous, the Lakers salary dump is making more sense.
Also, there’s a Khloe ‘meal ticket’ joke somewhere in there

Like, I’ve hooked up with a chick, and then the next morning met her roommates and realized she’s actually the ugly one in the group. Can’t imagine how LO feels being married to Kong and seeing her sisters look like Kim and Kourtney.

I think people forget the guys had a lot of tragic losses in his life, and has a stroke of bad luck being in the wrong place at the wrong time. . . i mean sure you’re supposed to be professional and earn your cash on the court but i mean, life occurances such as those don’t go away so easiy. . .i don’t know . .

  • Mariano

Yeah I’ve read some tragic stuff about LO’s life

Bad times for lamar. But not terrible. I wonder what franchise and cat are up to? Damn they were fun together. That reminds me of kelvin cato and his evil eyes.

I used to hate odom until I heard how rough his life has been… poor guy. with some better circumstances and some more drive he could have been an AMAZING player.

  • james aka…

I’m sick to death of the hardass teenage posse on here that responds to everyone’s pain by saying, he’s got a big paycheque so he should therefore be unaffected about witnessing a violent death from 3 feet away and losing a family member. All of you middle school rejects need to learn about the human psyche before sharing your worthless opinions with anyone.

  • Mike Mihalow

Just a BS story to name-drop his wife. Move on.

  • gillythekid

I love Lamar, but I’m a little bit tired of hearing about his tough circumstances. Having a D Bag friend who killed a pedestrian doesn’t inspire pity from me for the people in the car.

    Bill Sunday FTW

To simply put it… You can make millions, be successful, but at the end of the day your still a human . Sure NBA players are living in luxury but their still humans, with emotions.. most of you guys are pretty ignorant, and its sad. The man lost a family member and you have the heart to say “get over it” ? Smh.

  • That Dude

I’m shocked by most of the comments on here. Cosign James aka…
You gotta be a little kid to say this ignorant sh*t I’m reading

  • Jake

He’s got the worst luck ever. Obviously none of the people making stupid comments have lost someone close to them. If and when it happens to one of you, let’s see if you want to return to work.

    Jake…. Luck?… 6’10 mad handles in high school… college phenom… the next magic… 10 mil a year…. some bad luck.

  • Flud

Brings to mind the Free Darko piece on Odom, in the book, with the fantastic artwork. Wise up people.

  • Prick James

The only basketball that he should’ve walked away from is sitting on his wife’s shoulder’s…

    [he picked the wrong one!]

  • Justin G.

Unreal how pathetic most of you are. James aka hit it on the head.

I think after been named sixth man of the year The Lakers ripped LaMar off by trading him and you could see with the reception he got in the game against the Lakers the people of Los Angeles thought so too. Thank goodness his wife kept him from quitting. He is an asset to any team. I don’t like the new coach either.
